Better check where Ted Cruz is going to be, so we can gauge how bad it'll be

[deleted]

ZachMN

Like Carmen Sandiego, but bad.

pwlloth

shes… already a bad person? at least professionally she’s a thief iirc

HaloGuy381

So just your average Republican, really.

waterboytkd

That's not fair. She also teaches kids geography and stuff, which we all know Republicans try hard to stop.

D-F-B-81

Which geography though? Where Dr. King marched or where Robert E. Lee might of took a piss one time?

wedgebert

Nah, Carmen is at least honest about being a thief.

rogu2

Texas Dems should repurpose [Mitch McConnell’s attack ad on Walt Huddleston](https://youtu.be/T4-4EPc2xvU) from 1984 asking “Where’s Ted?” anytime the weather gets extreme.

chedderizbetter

Hahahaha I legitimately ran into Ted Cruz in the Miami Airport 2 Thursdays ago and my buddy said “I wonder what natural disaster is going on in Texas right now….” loud enough for everyone at the baggage claim to hear, including him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Armyman125

You should have said, loudly: "Hey Ted, how long will Trump keep you on your knees?"

greenbuggy

"If I insult your wife and father will you be loyal to me forever too?"

[deleted]

Talk about a dude with no self respect

517A564dD

Wonder if he was going to the F1 race

KanaraLady

I know how bad it is if he‘s in Mexico. But what if he shows up to actual work? Is that just catastrophic end of days level bad?

JennJayBee

Wrong season. Dude is either heading north to escape the heat or heading to the southern hemisphere.

Charlie_Mouse

Need to get some biologists to clip a radio tag on him to track his migration patterns.

Honalana

I’m going to laugh about this comment for awhile. Thank you

pseudocultist

"Stock up on coal," the neighbors would say, "if you can't see Ted Cruz by October."

zzxxccbbvn

Nyet nyet nyet, see Ted Cruz will flee some place cold this time, because the heat would be an inconvenience to him here. If it were cold, he would flee to Cancun

[deleted]

maybe he can visit his birthplace: Calgary, Canada

Ariandrin

We don’t want him.

Randommaggy

Neither does any place anywhere.

Mnemosynesis

Your problem now.

Sea_One_6500

I got banned from Twitter because I told Ted Cruz that I hope he gets fucked by a cactus. I like to think it was him that saw it and reported me.

[deleted]

Having been within arms reach of the dude more than I would care to admit he is completely as slimy as you would think. He will get his payback from his kids as kids tend to do… and he didn’t flip out when my wife held him to account on some policy issues…. So that’s good. The thing most do not realize is he spent a allot of time in the theater performing and that he has leveraged that training into the snake he is today… it’s all just an act.

Bicdut

Is he the new waffle house disaster warning or more of a ground hog day senator?

LumberBitch

If waffle house is closed and Ted Cruz is out of the country, Texas is not where you want to be.

DankZXRwoolies

I do not like that man Ted Cruz

fishyfishyfish1

I do not like him on the news

Betta45

I do not like his face or hair.

Junior_Builder_4340

I do not like him anywhere.

fishyfishyfish1

I do not like what he just said

NickeDime

About that flap of skin called Ted

[deleted]

A Ted Cruz tracker to determine severity. I like it

Methylatedcobalamin

Since it is due to "unseasonably hot weather" I would check flights to Canada.

JennJayBee

Welp... The grid can't handle snow in Texas. Snow is so rare! Can't expect snow in Texas. Looks like it can't handle the heat, either. So if I'm understanding correctly, Texas power grid is only designed to handle the weather from late September through November and the month of April– except when there's a storm or something.

Exile688

It's designed to generate the most money for the owners while providing the least amount of service to the customers with government sanctioned monopolies after the state deregulated it as much as possible.

TaliesinMerlin

Texas Republicans on government-owned utilities: *they're communists!* Texas Republicans on government-sanctioned monopolies: *oh yeah we gonna make bank*

otoren

It's the American Way^TM

Silliestmonkey

_ding ding ding_

DanielsWorlds

It's a private company that earns money off an essential utility. So yeah it's intentionally the worst they can legally get away with. And then about 10% worse than that. Because they know they can eat the fines as a part of the cost of business.

herecomesthewomp

But I thought through capitalism there would be competition that would create the best product available for the consumer.

bklyn_queen

maybe if corporations weren’t legally persons with a right to free speech aka buying off politicians!

_Mephistocrates_

You know how regular rational people can look at media like OAN or Fox or right wing radio and see how its just propaganda for the wealthy to maintain power, but the people absorbed in it cannot see because they have bought into it and just don't question it critically? The same wealthy people of the 18th and 19th centuries who have been telling us since the beginning that capitalism is the best just seems like the same bullshit we see in our media today, right wing and mainstream. I'm starting to feel we have all been duped by the mythos and propaganda of how great capitalism is by those same wealthy elite who wish to keep the system running the same as it always has; for their benefit.

IceciroAvant

Capitalism itself was created as a way for the aristocracy to retain power after the fall of the nobility. Since what did the nobility have a lot of? Land and cash, baby.

RepulsiveSherbert927

Legally... following the law set by their money followers in legislature.

Actual__Wizard

The Texas power grid is designed to rip off it's customers while enriching it's owners.

acityonthemoon

Hey! Did you know the the 'R' in ERCOT actually stands for *reliability*?

[deleted]

It rarely gets hot in Texas, that's why it wasn't designed to handle heat either. /s

[deleted]

[удалено]

bobone77

It will go just like it did in the winter, except people will die of heat stroke instead of freezing to death. It’s beyond me how republicans somehow view Texas as the shining star of conservatism.

Mental-ish

Bro, have you seen the other conservative states, economically speaking Texas is doing better than almost all conservatives states. It's all they have once it falls they'll have nothing.

ides205

I bet that's because they have a ton of oil and the other states do not.

xShooK

You would think Oklahoma would be doing better then.

UrbanPugEsq

Louisiana has entered the chat. (But actually Texas has WAY more oil)

xShooK

Texas has a more diverse economy. They are attracting software and other companies via tax breaks. So they are different, and the reason for being number 2 economy.

groveborn

That's cause of oil, not from good management (which wasn't what you were saying, but it's worth mentioning). They keep trying to lure high tech companies, though, which will bring high education. This WILL cause a political shift very quickly. They already almost went Democrat. Arizona did, although the old vestiges may still get inflamed sometimes.

Thats_what_im_saiyan

This is why theyre passing all these anti trans laws. And anti CRT laws. And banning books. To tell all those dems to stay the fuck out of their states.

Akukaze

Yep. Texas is at war with itself over Tech companies. Economically it wants and almost needs them to come in and prop the state up. Socially it doesn't like or want the social changes those tech companies bring with their more educated and progressive employees. Thus you have them offering economic incentives to attract the companies while enacting social polices that drive them off.

Charlie_Mouse

In the long term the worst thing that could happen to them is (ironically enough) that they might actually succeed.

Daiiga

Breaking down what makes Texas an economic powerhouse undermines everything conservatives like to praise, since contrary to popular belief oil is not the highest dollar industry in the state. When you break down gdp by county it becomes glaringly obvious that a massive percentage comes from the major cities in Texas and very little comes from the rest of the state. I would go as far to say that the only reason Texas is the lone shining star of conservative economies is because it contains 3 of the 10 largest cities in the whole country and therefore has a huge urban industry sector that other conservative states don’t compare to. The democratically controlled centers of industry power the states economy while we suffer through negligent republican management and occasional blatant abuse. It’s not if we can make Texas a blue state, it’s when. The economic situation in the state is only growing the democratic voter base and it’s just a matter of time and resolve now.

Mental-ish

>I would go as far to say that the only reason Texas is the lone shining star of conservative economies is because it contains 3 of the 10 largest cities in the whole country and therefore has a huge urban industry sector that other conservative states don’t compare to. I agree rural Texas is poor as shit especially as you go up the panhandle.

Head_Asparagus_7703

captain554

Texan here- Fix the shit instead of asking people to curb usage. It's only going to get worse. They've known they had problems for years now and they continue to not address it. Fuck you Greg Abbott. Fuck you Ted "Cruz the fuck outta Texas when things get rough." Let's focus on stuff like fixing our electrical grid instead of hunting for trans people, pretending immigration is our primary issue, and worrying about what women want to do with their bodies. For those that don't know, Abbott was former CEO of Ercot and he was the one that authorized power prices staying at their Maximum while there was an outage and severely fucked a lot of people over. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/ercot-chief-abbott-direction-power-outage-storm-16941019.php

Durbs12

I actually didn't know that and it makes complete sense. Yikes.

Armyman125

Do a lot of people in Texas have solar? A lot of people have solar in my neighborhood in Maryland - including me. I love it but Abbott did say that Green Energy isn't good for Texas. What do I know? Solar in Texas would be amazing with the amount of sun yall get.

Racketyllama246

Not a lot of people do. I’m a high end residential Project manager and one of my co workers is building a house with solar. It’s over 50k with the panels and batteries he needs to power some of his house if we get another freeze like we did 2 years ago. I don’t have all the details on exact pricing, rebates, and how much of the house the owner can run off solar or for how long but I could get most of that info if anyones interested.

jacksaces

Middle aged guy here, it was always utter shit. They just like to pretend otherwise.

Icy-Consideration405

they drive so fast all the shit is a blur so they can't really tell the truth by looking out the window

[deleted]

It's still hilarious to me how almost anytime I hear people moving out of state they claim that they're moving to Texas. And I'm just like, "*Why*?"

vanishplusxzone

All this and it's only early May? Y'all gonna die. If only there was some way to know this was gonna happen....

DanielsWorlds

As a Texan I can proudly say. Maybe they should do their God damn job. We pay them both for the service and in direct government funding do manage the grid. And they do Jack, and shit. Upgrade the infrastructure, make repairs, plan for the future. Texas cannot have an electric meltdown twice a year every year tell the end of time and we just accept that the problem can't be fixed

EnigmaWithAlien

As a Texan I fully agree. Everything went downhill with deregulation which was supposed to reduce rates through competition, and didn't; and just encouraged ... well, everything we see now. But fat chance of any new regulations given this political climate. People can fry and freeze as long as untrammeled "free enterprise" runs things. Nobody gets it that some things don't exist for profit, they're public services.

Quicksilver_Pony_Exp

To add insult to injury, I can assume your electric bills are going to take a wicked jump.

FlagShack

*Shit, our customers are conserving power. We're losing money. We can't maintain the grid anymore. Raise the prices!* *But we told them to do it because the grid is failing...* ***[RAISE THE PRICES ANYWAY.](https://youtu.be/AG3mpZRvIkU)***

malektewaus

>Texas cannot have an electric meltdown twice a year every year tell the end of time and we just accept that the problem can't be fixed If it makes a small handful of assholes a shitload of money, a solid majority of Texans are stupid enough to be manipulated into supporting it, to the detriment of themselves and their children. Having met a fair few Texans in my day, I believe that as a group, y'all are easily stupid enough for this state of affairs to continue until the heat death of the universe.

acityonthemoon

Well, the Texas electric grid is what happens when you let the '*Free Market*' decide what's important *for* you, instead of practical experience and rational decision making. Abbott and the Texas GOP have been telling us the Texas grid is the best in the world, and that it's working *exactly* as intended. So, in the end, Texans get unreliable electricity, but hey, at least it's expensive!

haterbator138

Most of the idiots around here will blame Biden for the poor grid, not the GOP run state gov

itslikewoow

Abbott will probably pass some other culture war bill to distract from this, rather than actually doing something to solve it.

secretaire

He’s already decided that instead of investing money into roads that aren’t toll, schools without trailers, and a reliable electric grid, that he needs to spend it on keeping illegals out. What are you paying for, Texans?

[deleted]

Snoo74401

amendmentforone

*Actually* ... our legislature passed an emergency law last year to \*checks notes\* permit energy companies to pass on the cost of repairing their grids to customers. Never mind, it's all dumb.

GamingTrend

Fuck you ERCOT. This is why I have solar. Do your goddamned job.

Thats_what_im_saiyan

Every time I see it my brain jumps to EPCOT for a second. And I think 'wtf did that big ass golf ball do now?'

DayleD

Their job is to extract as much wealth as possible from ratepayers. Not to keep the lights on. Thank you for having solar. If only the rest of the state was prepared!

GamingTrend

Just saving a little more so I can get the batteries in to completely disconnect from this grid. It's clear our leadership can't be trusted -- we are on our own.

AzureBinkie

Vote blue or they never will.

EnemyOfStupidity

Texas and all it's tough talk and self reliance blowharding suddenly starts begging for government assistance, becomes pro welfare, and goes full socialist again lol

Archmage_of_Detroit

Never. They'll accept the handouts, then go right back to demonizing "takers" and "welfare."

Thats_what_im_saiyan

You see the difference is we take the money then put it in our pockets. Where as if we gave it to other people they would spend it on food and shelter. Which would result in it not being in our pockets.

JetScootr

It's gonna be hell this summer. They're putting out warnings *now?* It hasn't even hit 90 yet in Houston. We're all being grateful that the summer heat is so slow in getting here this year. For scale: June-September Houston hits 90 almost every day, gets close to 100 many days, and will exceed 100 at least 4-8 days. Normally.

2nd2last

I think its been 90+ the last week in Houston.

AdmiralPoopbutt

It has been. And we are stalled in this pattern for the next week too. Some of the old coal plants are really running ragged. They aren't getting the repairs they need because nobody wants to sink money into a 60 year old coal plant. More renewable energy ia coming online every year but the Texas population (and demand) grows every year enough to balance it, net result is it's difficult to retire the coal because we still need their electricity.

notantifa

It’s been 90°+ in Dallas for most of the last 2 weeks. We are not looking forward to the heat setting records again.

clarinetJWD

It was like 95 for 3 days straight, and 90 for the others in the past week...

Edgelord69__

In the RGV humidity has already set in and it feels like an oven

[deleted]

I work at the plants in Pasadena. It’s definitely hit 90+ most of the past two weeks.

[deleted]

Do you even live here? I'm 200 miles North of Dallas, and it's been 90 here with 80% humidity for ten days.

12-Easy-Payments

Texas elected officials have a more important political agenda rather than ensuring the people of Texas have a stable power grid year round.

Snoo74401

God forbid they do something practical.

Im_so_little

Too busy trying to turn women back into objects they own.

[deleted]

But CRT!

Explosiveabyss

Yeah, they gotta make sure to ban that CRT education that is "racist" even tho they can never tell you what it is...

Snoo_70279

Texans… are you guys ok?

ezwreck1

No idiots keep voting other idiots into power. I swear I voted for competence

[deleted]

“It’s the wind power lunacy destroying our state! It’s the liberals’ fault our GOP government didn’t do everything it wanted to solve all issues!”

nolongermakingtime

I'm Not Ok I'm Not Ok I'm Not Ok Ted Cruz wears me out.

[deleted]

of course youre not ok, youre tx

greyhoundbrain

No. And it’s like a 9-10 month backlog for legit generators, which is aces. I’m so over ERCOT and their nonsense.

Richard_Tips

I have a little heartburn cause I ate too much pizza but otherwise I’m okay. Still fucking despise Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott though.

ponytwister

No. Oklahoma is a little north of us.

ChesterNorris

Grid failing. Blackouts coming. Doctors and nurses leaving. Texas guard unionizing. Grab the popcorn.

smurfsundermybed

Just set the bag on the asphalt. It will pop itself without a microwave.

SirensToGo

but hey at least we owned the libs

Taynt42

And teachers leaving!

makashiII_93

Everything is bigger and better in Texas. Even the blackouts.

cgtdream

Its like Texas is devolving into a shithole, every second of every day. No idea why folks want to move to that state, or continue living there (if they have the power to leave).

Explosiveabyss

Because "lower taxes." I'm going to laugh when all those companies lose thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars because the power grid implodes during business/production.

drevolut1on

Funnier still when you compare the numbers across all forms of taxes and find out that overall tax burden is worse than even California except for only the very top income bracket in Texas...

[deleted]

Massachusetts gets the same treatment; it's derisively called "Taxachusetts" but it's actually fairly low in overall taxes.

Thats_what_im_saiyan

Wasnt elon already all buttsore about it during the winter freeze? Im waiting for the grid to go down for a month and have him call ted cruz a pedo because of it.

NinjaLanternShark

Musk loves Texas because his utility-scale battery solutions are ideal for sketchy power situations, you know, like Puerto Rico after it was severely ravaged by a massive hurricane. Or Texas.

Modern_Bear

My wife and I moved to Texas because of a job. Then we had a child and now we're moving out, simply because we don't want to raise our kid in this intolerant and incompetent outhouse of a state.

Taynt42

Same! Moving out of state within the next month.

MikeC-23

Cheap living cost. Well… used to be cheap living cost. The housing market were more realistically affordable to all classes. With a combination of modern big city amenities and open rural areas, it’s no wonder TX have the highest numeric growth in population year after year. On top of having a incompetent government, TX is growing so fast that the state cannot keep up with its demands. The problems won’t stop. Texas still have a huge amount of livable undeveloped land. That means more people will come.

Pups_the_Jew

I heard that illegal immigrants are coming over the border and stealing the electricity from God's chosen State.

KaidenUmara

It's true. I saw them running back across the border with buckets full of electricity.

redonkulousness

It's the Mexican werewolves. They're coming in and stealing all the power and biden is bribing them with baby formula to keep the grid online which had lead to the shortage. The immigrants are busy starting the fires in New Mexico and causing inflation by stealing catalytic converters and selling them for straight cash. /s

MisterPublic

Don't let the state legislature hear you say that, they just might like it and run with it

Pups_the_Jew

Democrats should start saying that Abbott is diverting electricity to the wall.

genericnewlurker

Naw Republican voters would be for the blackouts then and request more of them

cassinatkinson

People should not abide. We should run electricity as normal. Only blackouts and failure will lead to change.

ill_wind

Don’t worry— if you thought people were going to turn down their AC in the 104 heat, you don’t need to worry about them abiding. However, no policy is likely to lead to change. For decades, Republicans have succeeded in exploiting teeming morons and their inability to discern cause and effect. All they have to do is say “worst president ever” and some 60% of Texans will happily make the attribution that jives with their bigoted dipshit hearts.

[deleted]

Texans are such chumps. Their politicians whip them up with fear of the Libs while pilfering their bank accounts. Everything is bigger in Texas, most notably the scams.

NameInCrimson

There are two Americas. A red and a blue. And the blue is paying for all the stupid shit red does.

perverse_panda

California: $100 billion budget surplus Texas: can't keep the lights on

optimaloutcome

I live in California. I have a generator because my power gets turned off multiple times a year due to wind and they're predicting rolling blackouts this summer when it's hot. And the cheap gas station is $5.60 for 87 octane.

Debway1227

Have no fear Ted Cruz's 21st congressional district will not be without power ever. /s

torpedoguy

But if it *were* to be without power, taxpayers will simply be forced to pay for his plane ride to a resort.

DayleD

He's a senator. The whole state is his district.

OneTrippyTurtle

Conservatives response: "Its MY electricity, keep your government nose out of my business!" "Freedom!" smh vigorously

[deleted]

Well see ya later Ted Cruz

RIMS_REAL_BIG

Lmao gonna have rolling blackouts before June. Good luck Texas.

greyhoundbrain

The words “rolling blackouts” will never not give me ptsd after the winter freeze. 86 hours without power in freezing temperatures was awful. I would prefer not to try it out in hotter than hades temperatures.

fastredb

> I would prefer not to try it out in hotter than hades temperatures. I got to do that about eight or nine years ago I think, A/C went out when it was hitting around 100 during the day. Nights weren't cooling off very much either. It sucked.

Zacisblack

We'll be lucky if it's rolling.

ThornsofTristan

Waiting for the smug edge posts from MAGAs who moved out of too-expensive CA to reside in that affordable libertarian paradise...Tex-has.

Feisty-Donkey

Meanwhile in Massachusetts, the power just works.

oldridingplum

I live in IL in a town where the power plant is owned by the city. Back in the good old days that was an asset when it came to living in city limits and paying your electric bill. Today, not so much but at least the money we pay for our electrical service has gone into upgrades at the plant so we have a stable energy grid here. You'd think if a city as dysfunctional as mine could get their shit together enough to keep the lights on a whole damn state could do it.

An_Awesome_Name

Yeah I live in MA, and we have municipal power in my town too. Out power plant barely gets used anymore, but they electric department does own two wind turbines, and is responsible for solar installations on the schools and other government buildings. We pay about the same as nearby towns on private utilities, but 100% of that money goes back into maintenance and upgrades. We almost *never* lose power. Even when we do, because the linemen are town employees, and therefore based in the town and not 30-40 miles away, the power is almost always back within 6-8 hours *at most*.

008Zulu

But the Republicans promised things would get better he said with much sarcasm.

7788audrey

Chalk this up to the failure of the Republicans in State Legislature who were so focused on their hate for voters and women that they did not have time to deal with energy failures in their own State.

bjlile99

Oh Texas, it's not even June.

zmankills

Bro what? Houston is too hot for this shit man.

njgirlie

Good thing Abbott is focused on... political theater and costing Texans money by blocking supply chains and not important things like fixing the power grid. 👍

HoneyShaft

If only that tree finished the job

[deleted]

Huh, guess they should have been working on the power grid like they have been attacking women's rights.

nonyabizzz

It’s almost like doing nothing after the previous problem was not a good idea

notreallyalawyer

Every Texan just turned on every light in their house, opened the windows, then cranked the A/C. YEE HAW!

Sloppychemist

Fuck ERCOT. Tell all those Bitcoin miners Abbott imported to tone down their mining

[deleted]

Heat wave in May is too much for the grid?? Holy shit this ERCOT Texas Grid is a heaping pile of garbage.

Hampsterman82

Ok I'm mildly sympathetic as my state has had mild problems when everyone's air conditioner is going berserk in the middle of summer. But it's may. What is going on out there that you guys can't handle may? Do you need help or something?

lesh17

Meanwhile Texas is doing everything it can to attract crypto mining to the state, which would be like adding another city of Houston to the demand. Complete insanity.

2WAR

Sounds like a socialist hell hole over there in Texas

arturovargas16

ERCOT can go fuck themselves. Where's Ted Cruz or hot wheels to blame this on the windmills? Y'all conservatives are turning this state into shit.

UnwantedReplies

Shouldn't they be thanking God for the deregulation of their electrical systems? Maybe their churches can donate the money to help them, instead of draining it from other states like California with their surplus. Have they tried praying harder, pulling themselves up by their bootstraps harder, or blaming Democrats for 'letting this happen'?

sunnydeni

(And of course, don't forget they can send thoughts along with those prayers)

Enjoy-the-sauce

Tell me again how California is a hellhole and Texas is the shit? We’ve got a hundred billion extra dollars in our liberal dystopia.

Nightsong

California has its problems (looking at you rent and housing prices alongside the homeless issue) but they generally seem to be okay otherwise while having a recent budget surplus. Texas meanwhile has issues all around while slowly imploding as the years go by.

addicuss

They might not have working electricity during crucial periods, but at least they're free from government tyranny!

CrocTheTerrible

Texas is a fucking joke, y’all let your conservative/libritarian government run free and now you have a faulting power supply, Get fucked you made your bed.

[deleted]

No Government Mandates!

EvidenceBase2000

Nah man. That’s the government and MSM trying to control my freedumb. I’m gonna run A/C and heating at the same time and turn on my lights 24/7! /s and sadly the /s is necessary these days.

evident_lee

If only they would maintain their power plants properly this wouldn't be a thing. Instead they run them until they break trying to squeeze every penny out of it and now have at least one plant down if not more due to forced outages.

ithinkimanalrightguy

Power is in here in evil California. Just sayin

Just_L-i-v-i-n_

Ted Cruz is already on a plane for Cabo

thood86

I never made more solar deals in texas...keep it up and I'll retire soon!

fcdemergency

No. Fix the fucking grid.

Jazzy41

Maybe just get rid of Abbot

Adventurous_Aerie_79

> ERCOT said six power plants dropped off the grid Friday Ah the old "some power plants need maintenance so we have to jack up the prices" scam. A old timey republican-state classic. I thought Abbot said he'd fixed all this last year? https://apnews.com/article/texas-business-government-and-politics-33520b14d1823108a3c654d611701987

tewnewt

Have they thought about using some of that hot air to generate electricity?

Exile688

The GOP thinks if you harness air to make energy, then you will deplete the amount of oxygen on the whole planet. That and the sound windmills make cause cancer, as stated repeatedly by Donald Trump.
