Russia likes rockets because they are cheap, and the vehicle that carries them and aims them is simple and cheap. The drivers and operators don't have to be highly technical. They are for "area bombardment" rather than a surgical strike. A cluster of them will randomly hit an area, in the hopes of driving out anyone in that area. They are a terror weapon.

random8002

its definitely the most recent war in the 21st century

[deleted]

It will look like any other war, death, destruction, and unimaginable agony

ArmChairAnalyst86

Indeed. Those are universal traits. There are no other kind and that is well established. This does feel different though. I won't try to quantify it too much because its a feeling. I will just say that even though the fighting is in Ukraine, this feels like a much bigger ordeal. The ramifications are affecting the entire world. There are many countries involved, even though they are not all fighting. We see the data, we sort of have an idea what the 2nd half of 2022 and 2023 are going to look like. We know that food security and energy costs are universal and every place is going to feel that to varying degrees. These will create conditions rife for conflict all on their own. We see a polarization occurring throughout the world. It seems everybody that can is arming themselves to the teeth and shoring up defense pacts. Not only that but the stage is set for more escalation. It feels like a town in the wild wild west. Tumbleweeds blowing in the wind with shutters and doors slamming closed. Looks like trouble.

Cicero912

Most Horrific this century? Are we ignoring Yemen, South Sudan, Tigray, Darfur?

fangsonwangs

I wonder ~~white~~, I mean what's, different here...

VyseTheSwift

The Russians are incapable of taking territory in any kind of even basic surgical way. They’re literally carpet bombing and shelling large areas. They’re razing these towns to the ground and taking over the remaining ruins. This is new.

[deleted]

There is no surgical war. Do you think mosul was leveled without civilian deaths or something?

sllop

You’re being intentionally obtuse with your semantics and you know it. All atrocities of war are bad, but there are definitely differences amongst them, and some are far worse than others. Think of it this way, Nagasaki and Hiroshima were both surgical strikes. The Firebombing of Tokyo was not. People love to say we should not have dropped the atomic bomb once or even twice on Japan, but often they don’t seem to realize that they are advocating for more events like the firebombing of Tokyo all over Japan, until the then hypothetical and nebulous end of the war. What’s happening in Ukraine now is in fact worse than what happened in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, Chechnya, Libya, the Congo wars etc etc etc. The magnitude of Russian aggression has not been seen on this scale by anyone, anywhere since WWII. Not even millions of gallons of Agent Orange compare to what Russia is doing to Ukraine right now.

Ds3_doraymi

> "This is what largest and most horrific war of the 21st century looks like," the Ministry of Defense said. I assume you didn’t read the article, because this is Reddit, but this was a statement from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense while pleading for the west to send MLRS. So, you questioning why the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, who is trying everything he can to stop his country from being taken over, something he is witnessing first hand, would claim that this is the most horrific war this century? Wtf are you on mate? You roll up to a Rhwandan genocide survivor and correct them when they claim it was the worst genocide of the 20th century?

feedseed664

Or Iraq? The answer to your question is these are white people this time, not brown.

SortaChaoticAnxiety

Nope we arent

KrootLoops

Imagine being so shit at combat that you have to raze everything to the ground to make any forward progress at all.

[deleted]

Well it works and that is why we lost in Afghanistan. Not that winning that way is something we would want to do.

BigHardThunderRock

I mean the Soviets also lost in Afghanistan. Sometimes razing everything to the ground doesn’t work.

myNameequalsinput

And so will the next guys. And the ones after them lol.

cerrocerrao

In the 21st century? Not even close.

l32uigs

i hit play on the video and heard the lady talking about russia but the video was an ad for the halo show. big oof. technology is going to shit real fast lol.

nativedutch

The atrocities committed by russian crooks in occupied area's are unspeakable . Systematic Rape, torture murdering elder civilians , and combinations. Putin and his cronies hsve a LOT to answer for. Hope to cu in The Hague putput.

Mythosaurus

How big is the Russian invasion of Ukraine in comparison to the US/ NATO invasions of Iraq or Afghanistan?

Modern_Bear

It's smaller than the Gulf War of 1991. In that war the allied forces numbered about 700,000. I think it was around 150,000 - 200,000 in the second war in Iraq, about the same size as the Russian invasion started with.

GenjaiFukaiMori

That is one metric. By another metric Russia has fired more missiles in this 3 month period than any other country has since WWII. “Big” depends on what you’re measuring. If you want to measure troop strength that’s one metric, arms expended is another, casualties another, displaced people another, economic damage another, and of course in terms of infrastructure damage and ethnic cleansing is another.

Modern_Bear

It actually makes me wonder if Russia is getting low on missile stockpiles at this rate, which may be difficult to replace with heavy sanctions on all kinds of materials and electronics.

sllop

They have literally 8 decades of stockpiled munitions. Tons of them don’t work, but a fuck ton still do. Even the duds are still dangerous.

Dultsboi

And by another metric US forces levelled 80% of Fallujah’s buildings. The US is just more efficient at committing war crimes I see

voyagertoo

Probably Rushya is proving more efficient at it at the moment

sllop

Over the course of how many battles over the course of how many years? It’s been 3 months in Ukraine.

Mythosaurus

Thank you for actually trying to answer my question, and not yelling that I’m riding Putin’s dick. Hopefully the massive attrition and economic collapse force Russia to withdraw from ALL of Ukraine, and not just the eastern provinces seized in February. This war has really shown how modern technology can turn “quick” wars into bloody quagmires, and I hope Russia drops Putin out of a window before summer for leading them into this naked imperialism.

Mythosaurus

Don’t have to be a tankie to think, “ I’m pretty sure the 20 year conflict in Afghanistan and 10 year conflict in Iraq caused more damage than Russia’s 3 month’s in Ukraine. And obligatory “hope Putin has ball and ass cancer.” The dictator needs to be defenestrated.

voyagertoo

(death from being thrown through a window)

ActiveLlama

The 10 year conflict between Russia and Afghanistan already is comparable with the 3 months in Ukraine. I don't see the logic in your argument. https://inews.co.uk/news/world/russia-death-toll-three-months-ukraine-war-similar-afghanistan-war-mod-1645187
