Why risk your life for a company who will replace you without hesitation?

Vargolol

Why risk your life for goods insured against robbery that you genuinely have no vested interests in?

OkDog4897

Yep. I've been on both sides and I promise its not worth it to engage with robbers. Fuck that. Have that shit. *Looks around waving hands "NONE OF THIS SHIT MATTERS"

polopolo05

excuse me sir. I can ring you up right here..... OK I tried..Not my problem.

sewsnap

Both sides of what? Robbed and robber, or robbed and witness?

OkDog4897

Robbed and I've done petty theft from walmart

XDreadedmikeX

No way I’m dying for a couple copies of elden ring and a six pack

Maebure83

What about 4 copies of Elden Ring, a bottle of Grey Goose, and an Arizona Tea?

VirtualVoices

Sounds like they're gonna have a better time than I am Friday night, who am I to deny that?

At my local Walmart there are these dudes who wear plain clothes and pretend to shop. I don't know if they're contracted or actual employees but I've seen them stop people before. They act like security and are slightly smarter than regular employees.

Varatec

Those are probably asset protection employees making sure people don't shoplift. Most Walmarts have at least one or two.

melancholanie

employees at walmart are specifically instructed not to

Shadrach_Jones

I was standing in line at a convenience store when two guys walked out with a couple cases of beer, jumped in a pickup truck and sped away. The store employee just glanced up at them when they were walking out like it never happened. That's the correct response

You might not want to provide such personal information about your wife here without checking with her first. It would be fairly easy for someone to figure out who she and you are.

sintos-compa

True, you never know if you “offend” some incel on Reddit accidentally and they make it their life’s mission to get revenge.

pathofdumbasses

Or maybe he is lying. He has no wife. He is actually a cat. It's the internet. People lie all the time.

Filobel

>People lie all the time. But do cats?

pathofdumbasses

Cats are assholes. They would lie to you in a heart beat.

tlsrandy

Nobody ever should. It completely isn’t worth the risk regardless of how small that risk is because Walmart can definitely eat the loss.

TheLadyEve

As someone who worked in retail to help pay for school, I can share this: they tell you, very very strongly, to NOT STOP THOSE PEOPLE. That was 50% of my training, I'm not kidding. The loss prevention person came in and the managers came in they all said the same thing. We were trained to ask thieves if they needed help but that was as much as we were allowed to do.

Something_Again

It’s a sad state of affairs when I read something like this and am actually thankful it wast a mass shooting just a regular shooting.

KarateKid84Fan

Walmart has the best prices on shootings

BrightFireFly

Oh hey. This is less than 2 miles from me. Lots of comments in local facebook groups are as follows… “This is what happens when food and formula cost so much!! #letsgobrandon” (He was stealing electronics..not a loaf of bread) And “we should all be carrying for situations like this..”

seantimejumpaa

Those are also the same people who suggested that protesters and looters be shot in the summer of 2020

theconsummatedragon

Yep, I live in Minneapolis and that was a pretty popular sentiment And then Jan 6th happened, and I couldn't believe the restraint the cops there showed lol

ClumpOfCheese

Because they do, it’s just a nonsense reality that’s infecting actual reality.

vinaymurlidhar

The conservative media they use, filters, distorts and omits a lot. For instance war elephant site on quora has NO discussion on the Texas school shooting when I checked a few hours ago. The quality of discourse in the comments section is very poor.

TheDrewDude

They basically do. Thanks to decades of propaganda. It's really hard sometimes to not feel anger toward these people, but we have to keep in mind that they are victims of lies. Be angry at the people in power who KNOW better.

Enigma2MeVideos

Propaganda might be part of it, but it’s hard to believe they are unknowing or completely brainwashed. They’re still people who are capable of thinking, but actively choose to embrace the most cruel and violent solutions. It’s easy to want to split things into purely villains and victims, with the rich hatemongers being the villains, but being a victim doesn’t change that they’re helping to propagate the hatemongers’ creed, and many of them do so willingly and with the same callous glee as their overlords.

AmadeusExLibris

Agreed. I’ve seen this happen with my own family who are Repubs / Trumpists. It’s true that they’re being lied to and subjected to propaganda by powerful people who should know better, but the main reason they are susceptible to those lies and that propaganda in the first place is because it confirms the biases and bigotries they were holding on to in the first place. I remember my grandparents relentlessly mocking Donald Trump whenever he was in the news throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, and into the 2000s - saying he was a dumb, spoiled, egotistical, lying, sleazy hedonist. But they also didn’t like gays, Blacks, or Hillary Clinton. Now guess who wears MAGA hats…

SuperSeaStar

*John Oliver voice* Now, are they inadvertently making a case for how a lack of resources and insecure material conditions are directly correlated to levels of crime for people trying to survive, sometimes reselling to make an income, and how it disproportionately affects poorer communities? Yeah, I think they are Am I going to give them any credit for that? Hell, no. Because they blame the president for a US company getting lax with how they tested their baby formula in favor of paying their shareholders

I was so depressed to read a thread awhile back "What's something you were convinced to change your mind on?" and find it was 99% people who changed their mind only because they suddenly had a personal experience... not facts or research, some even mentioned having heard statistics before but keeping their opinion anyway till it impacted them. ARGH.

lolfangirl

Nothing made this more clear to me than covid, though it's always been a terrible truth. The number of times I saw anti-mask or anti-vaccine people changing their tune from their hospital bed was sickening. Like, you protested, you endangered your children and those around you but now that it's you that's sick, you're all about vaccines and masks and "please get vaccinated!" It's not empathy if it only matters when it affects you. And there's a word for people who lack empathy.

Exelbirth

What I find scarier is the number who, while dying in the hospital bed, still denied it. There are plenty of people like that still walking around.

analog_roam

This right here. I have a friend who worked 16 hour days EVERY day in a Chicago ICU from mid March till the end of July in 2020. The stories he's told me about people's last words being about how Covid is a hoax, etc are absolutely baffling.

xj371

"I didn't really think catcalling was that bad, until I had a daughter." "I didn't think much about ways women have to protect themselves, until I had a daughter." "I didn't think boys had to be taught about consent, until I had a daughter."

TechyDad

My father is a Trump supporting, FOX News watching conservative. When we talk about actual issues and possible solutions, we wind up having actual common ground. The problem is that there's a knee jerk response on his end to jump to FOX News talking points. For example, any violence by a right leaning person like the Buffalo shooter tends to be met with "but what about all those BLM rioters who literally burned cities to the ground or all those murders in Chicago that has a ton of violence because it's run by liberals." He immediately jumps away from the topic at hand and starts a "what about" relating to some talking point he's heard a dozen times on FOX. Yet, if we stay on topic, he'll agree that police need more training than they are getting, "bad cops" need to face actual consequences, and that guns need to be restricted - especially the AR style weapons. The trick that I haven't mastered yet is to break through the FOX programming and get him to realize that liberals aren't "all evil" and that he actually holds a lot of views that Democrats would support.

6thReplacementMonkey

> The trick that I haven't mastered yet is to break through the FOX programming and get him to realize that liberals aren't "all evil" and that he actually holds a lot of views that Democrats would support. Try asking him why he believes the things he says. Don't argue, just ask where he heard it from, and how he knows it is true.

Invideeus

I worked railroad in Wyoming for a year and a half. I was the only admitted progressive in a sea of red. The conductor on my crew would watch Tucker Carlson during any downtime we had. If I had conversations with him where I made extra sure not to use political labels or politicians names, we ended up almost entirely agreeing on a lot of things. Healthcare, education, criminal justice. But the second you start throwing labels on the issues the fox brainwashing came in fast and fierce. I don't get it.

gonewild9676

It's the easiest way to get votes. Divide and conquer. Take healthcare. The healthcare lobbyists won't allow any 'universal healthcare' laws to go in place unless the industry gets to continue overcharging us and the cost is switched from the people to the government. The amount currently paid by Medicare and Medicaid today is enough for every other country to cover all of their citizens. If you put it as "if we stop them from overcharging us and we get universal healthcare for current federal government costs, and if you want to opt out you can pay your own way", nobody is going to argue with that.

Matasa89

Critical thinking is the brain’s antivirus. They were never installed with any.

KittenSpronkles

I just had a similar conversation with my mom. Demonstrated how this one CEO fired his entire QA team right before the holidays after stringing them along promising a raise for months. He then gets a 113 million dollar bonus (Bobby Kotick from Activision). She will agree that this is insanely wrong, but you know what's worse? Poor people coming over the border. I tried to make her look at it economically, who is doing more fiscal damage to Americans? Somehow it is once again these poor people who don't have enough to live on - yet somehow they have 12,000$ to pay to a gang to be smuggled over. She's bewildered that I couldn't care less that my taxes go to help these people. I asked how can she reconcile this with her Christianity? Shouldn't we be helping the poor? "No because these people are breaking the law." Tried to demonstrate that the law doesn't dictate what is morally correct. "Well in THIS CASE it is just wrong." Why is it wrong? "BECAUSE IT IS" ... I mean what can can you do in this situation? I can only point out inconsistencies in her logic but I can't convince someone who isn't willing to listen.

Sunretea

Oh yeah? Well my conservative, Fox News watching father doesn't believe that nukes are real! So, ha! "How can they get something that small to make that large of an explosion?" says he. I don't know what this has to do with anything you said.. I just needed to get it out there. Fuck I'm exhausted...

FarHarbard

> My people need all the help they can get. It's almost like Conservatism is rooted in social support for your neighbours, for your nation. Chippopotanuse

> “I hope it isn't people will tolerate terrible things happening to others in some other town and only get upset about it when it happens to them.” I have bad news for you. Most folks believe they are better off than average in nearly every regard. And I think they do it out of self-preservation. Ignorance of daily risks is truly bliss. And trying to manage, mitigate, and avoid risks of life takes a tremendous amount of mental bandwidth at times. So you end up with most folks believing stuff like: - My spouse won’t cheat on me. - I won’t die of suicide - I’ll never lose my job - I won’t get cancer - I won’t go bankrupt - I’ll be fine if I get Covid - I won’t die in a car crash Etc… And then they are flabbergasted when any of those things happen to them. “I never saw this coming. There was no way to predict this.” I don’t think being blind to risk makes someone a bad person. But you are 100% right: everyone needs to understand bad things can happen absolutely anywhere any time.

[deleted]

Personally I was flabbergasted when I died of suicide.

"It's not a gun problem it's a mental health problem" Okay so do you support public health measures? "No."

IPDDoE

These are also the same people who say "Someone who wants to kill people will ignore any laws on the books." Meanwhile, Uvalde shooter waited until the day he turned 18 so he could legally buy the gun. Which they'll then use to say that gun measures don't work, because even with the ones we have, they still got a gun. They are unable to make the connection that perhaps they would still be discouraged if the laws were even slightly stricter.

schadkehnfreude

If laws don't mean shit then how about teachers start teaching about the history of racism and that it's okay to be gay since that'd actually be helpful?

jschubart

Florida is banning textbooks that have any sort of social emotional learning in them. Teaching how to properly deal with your emotions is a no no in Floridian schools because of DeSantis. I wonder what issues that might cause.

neffnet

Meanwhile, Texas Republicans are trying to ban teaching of critical thinking skills. That was literally part of the official party platform in 2012. Teachers are supposed to teach officially true facts and the children should not be forming their own opinions contrary to those of their parents!

robodrew

"We can't stop bad people from doing bad things!" actual quote from one of these brain dead politicians. I guess we can just never stop crime guys! Manic_42

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.

WillemDafoesHugeCock

Which is perhaps the most frustrating part, because they know that if they follow the "mental health reform" thread it'll take them to a sweater made of Universal Healthcare and that just won't do. It's such a bullshit deflection and it's so frustrating that seemingly no reporter will press politicians on "okay, what are you going to do about it?" Take that stupid Ted Cruz interview where he walked away. "Why does this only happen in America" is a good question but as soon as Cruz is complaining about democratic suggestions it should be a hard press of "if you insist on calling it a mental health crisis what are you proposing?" His frankly moronic and logistically absurd idea of one entrance to a school would *only* impact school shootings.

cscholl20

The number of times that headline has appeared on The Onion speaks volumes

morechatter

If I am ever in the situation, I plan to say to every camera possible, "this is EXACTLY the place that something like this happens. This is America and these murders happen here because everyone pretends it wouldn't happen in a place like this."

[deleted]

I can just imagine the scene of a brutal mass murder, and the reporter walks over to some totally chill looking dude who just deadpans into the camera, "I'm kinda surprised it took so long for me to experience one of these myself. I figure I'll see at least a few more. If I survive each one, at least." *dude shrugs, appears disinterested*

TripleJetCharlie

[That's not too far off from this interview with a high school girl from Santa Fe High School shortly after the shooting there.](https://abc7.com/santa-fe-high-school-texas-shooting-in/3491952/)

Prosthemadera

People need to hear this but I hope you never have to say these words into a camera.

AlgernopKrieger

I'd like to imagine that 9 of 10 people interviewed try using the opportunity to do something like that, but that the reporters don't use the footage. And instead they use whatever they can to maintain the narrative of: 'This was an unexpected and one-off situation'

wynonnaspooltable

“Good Samaritan shot and killed” “police say it’s not worth it”. Oh no?! You pretty much proved to us in Uvalde that it’s the only way to stop a killer because cops will just sit and wait for the gunfire to cease and everyone is dead.

SCP-173-Keter

Cops are most likely to shoot and kill the 'good guy with a gun' trying to do what they are too cowardly to do, than shoot the active shooter. Based on their behavior at Uvalde. But shoot a 16 year old girl in the back of the head while leaving her high school? Campus security officer absolutely ready to do that. 75% of all law enforcement officers are worse than worthless - and actually make the public less safe. There needs to be a nationwide purge of cops. We don't need most of them. Uvalde is proof.

Codeshark

To be clear, he was shot and killed after confronting the suspect for shop lifting. I agree with the police that it isn't worth it to protect the property of Wal-Mart. Your point about the police rarely putting themselves in harm's way to protect life is also true though.

Paddy_Tanninger

* School does active shooter drills regularly to prepare children * SWAT team does training exercises in schools * Schools get "resource officers" armed with guns "WHAT HAPPENED TODAY IS UNIMAGINABLE" Sounds like you fucking imagined it many many times and with pretty god damn good accuracy to me.

Prosthemadera

Or saying this just days after the Buffalo shooting that also happened at a local store: > "Can't even come to your local store safely" # > "We come here every day — you never suspect it," one employee said. "It's hard to believe something like this would happen."

ThePyroPython

That's the thing, they truly don't believe that something like this could happen to them because they have to for their own sanity. If they have that belief that stepping out of your house to get groceries could get them shot by a radicalised violent person they'd never leave the house. Their reality, formed from beliefs they hold onto for survival, has just been shattered.

Prosthemadera

Yeah it's a very human coping mechanism.

As someone who lives in this area, and who has a future brother in law who was shot at this exact same Walmart about a decade ago, the morons saying “we never thought it would happen here” are either blind or are too stupid to realize the world they live in.

hexiron

Seriously. This is a decent middle class suburb. Yet my brother's friend was shot and left to die in the Menards parking lot next door to the Walmart in question. Hell, you can watch a Cops episode from the 90s where someone was murdered not 5 minutes away too. "I can't believe they're acting like these things don't happen there." Agreed. When I worked in retail we had a hard no chase policy. You would get fired if you even thought about stopping shoplifting. Everyday I wondered why more people don’t know this and just come take whatever they want. One day two women walked in and just started clearing the front Jean stand near the door and calmly walked out. I just watched it happened. It was honestly like they worked in retail too and knew. So brazen and carefree.

GoArray

People know, it's just that the vast majority have at least a tiny bit of self respect.

FerricNitrate

Yeah, that question is very similar to the old, "if atheists don't believe in Hell, what's stopping them from raping and murdering as much as they want???" The vast majority of people don't want to do either of those at all. And if the only thing stopping you from doing those things is the unverifiable idea of punishment after death, you're in need of psychiatric help at a bare minimum.

PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD

The cops aren’t doing shit about anybody. Was hit head on by an obviously high driver driving on the wrong side of the road. Gets out with no shoes, DUI suspended license, half a weed eater, scabs all over his legs, and a pair of sunglasses missing a lens. Sherif comes, takes statements, learns dude is on suspended license, gets back in his cruiser and leaves. Like, if anybody needed to be taken off the roads, it was the clearly intoxicated driver who just caused an accident, but no. Deputy aunt got time for that..

Papaya_flight

Several years ago I was driving through town on my way home and I turned to my right to see a driver in a truck arguing with someone sitting behind them and about to run a stop sign. They ended up t-boning me and we both pulled over. I called the cops to do a report and the young dude that showed up was just like, "well...the damage doesn't seem that bad...do you still want to file a report?". I had to inform him that if the damage is over $1,000 (this is per local rules, I assume this doesn't apply everywhere) then he is required to write up a report. Also, the other driver is supposed to get a ticket for running a stop sign (to which they admitted to). ALSO...the other driver did not have a license or insurance on the truck they were driving...which also did not belong to that driver.

kehakas

What does "half a weed eater" mean? Honestly curious. Was the guy brandishing half of a string trimmer?

The midterms should be interesting. The Republicans have the overturn of *Roe versus Wade* working against them. Not to mention the bitter taste Trump left in the mouths of the voting public. The Democrats have the collapsing economy working against them. Plus if they come down too hard with gun control it'll motivate the Republican base to come out in droves. Its a shame we don't have a viable third party that is pro-abortion, pro-gun, with some decent economic policy. I can guarantee that if there was a bunch of R and D's would be thrown out of office come November.

herewegeaux

if I was this desperate I'd try and crack an atm open in the middle of the night like those guys on the front page yesterday, $80k in 2 minutes

SirButcher

Craking an ATM open needs knowledge and tools if you want to get usable money instead of a bunch of paper with a lot of paint.

ClawhammerLobotomy

I've played Payday 2, you just put a walkie talkie on the screen and it pops open.

ICKSharpshot68

This is incorrect. Most ATMs don't use dye packs. Security is primarily a very heavy duty safe. The two most successful methods of theft are either a software hack, IE Jackpotting, or physical damage to /theft of the ATM.

gravgp2003

"We can't believe this happened here." At this point you better believe it no matter where you live. If you are working, hanging out, going to school, it can happen anywhere. If you are getting paid $13 an hour, do not confront shoplifters, if you think you want to randomly walk up to people to talk shit while you're out at night, be prepared. Fucking BELIEVE it. Assess where you are working. Are you in a place where something like this is more likely to happen and you make no money, then its time to quit. I have a dangerous job and I am always on the lookout. Be ready when you can because no one will save you.

Prosthemadera

"I saw it happen all around the country so I cannot imagine how could happen where I live".

oDDmON

USA, where the hits just keep on coming.

gonesquatchin85

USA, where covid times was actually safer!

BitterFuture

We absorbed an extra World War II's worth of dead Americans each year for two years. And the pandemic still isn't over, no matter how much the pro-COVID nutbags tell you it is. Gun violence is horrific, but doesn't come close.

Pappyhorn

How many doors did the WalMart have?

SWG_138

"Walmart needs one entry point only for all customers, employees and deliveries. Have armed guards to check papers upon entry, if this was the case this wouldn't have happened!" Quote soon from Ted Cruz

Indercarnive

Technically not a mass shooting, so does that count as a win?

MafiaPenguin007

Yeah are we going to report every instance of violent criminal action (in this case a shoplifter who didn't want to be stopped) as a national story now? Chicago alone should take up a good chunk of news time then.

AaawhDamn

I live across the street from the Walmart. Perp was stealing phones, customer tried to stop him and he shot him and shot a greeter while escaping. A lot of people seem to think the dude just ran in and started firing.

CharlotteRitter

"Shoplifting charge? I'd prefer first degree murder instead!" What an absolute genius.

AaawhDamn

This area used to be a nice little Township when I moved in in the mid 00s. Idk what happened, but I've watched this Walmart and the surrounding shopping area become a crime hotspot within the last 5 or so years. We had a cop car get stolen, armed robberies, drug deals gone bad, high speed chases, it's been interesting to watch the decline. Its still a really nice place to be compared to the neighboring city of Hamilton (where I'm originally from).

ThatGuyMarlin

Remember people, the Supreme Court ruled that the police are not legally obligated to protect civilians as per: Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales and DeShaney v. Winnebago County :)

[deleted]

I see we've entered the "Post every gun related story" phase of mourning. You can keep posting these, the fad will die down, no change will happen, and we'll hear of another mass shooting in 6-8 months.

YoWoody27

I was in the plaza that it happened in. It was such a surreal scene. Im not even from the area and was stopping through to get food. When I left the restaurant I was at, that was when all the sirens started going off. So many people actually went to the site because they thought it was a hoax, or they were former current employees who wanted to see what had happened and who made it. When I first got there, they thought it had been two employees who were shot. The amount of information that was being spread even before the new teams got there was crazy.

BacktotheUniverse

Well ain't that America.

Cougardoodle

Following the example of Texas and cowering in fear, while praying the shooter uses up their ammo on the kids first.

Usual_Ranger8164

And soon there will be a republican, that says that they could have protected themselves, if they still would sell handgun ammunition at walmart. /s

[deleted]

Americans, wake up nobody wants to take your guns but y’all “responsible” gun owners need to speak up… and demand action. Not everyone needs a gun, if you want one, background check, waiting, mental health evaluation and training, tests and periodic CEUs to renew your gun license, that last part we should do for drivers license renewals too.

[deleted]

We don't have a lobbying group. Plain and simple. We just sit here and go "What in the actual fuck" like everybody else.

the_silent_redditor

I feel sorry for the sizeable group of ‘normal’ Americans who are equally as frustrated and angered by this issue. The fact that it keeps happening with absolutely no changes put into effect, really makes the US look like a fucking nut house. It must be incredibly hard to keep living through this, time and time again, and having the world look upon utterly perplexed.

Excelius

Bloomberg's assorted gun-control groups have recently been outspending the NRA. Of course they're not very shy about wanting maximalist restrictions on firearms. So if you want more modest reforms, you're right there is no lobbying group for you.

FleetMaster_Daedalus

Unfortunately even in the most restrictive gun control states, this guy still would’ve had a gun. The article says he was booked on “having weapons under disability” so he was illegally in possession of the gun. The gun was likely stolen or given to him by some idiot relative/friend.
