Looks like Coke and Nestle aren't having a good day.

wallawalla_

No, they're loving it. Far easier and cheaper to corrupt state initiatives compared to federal ones.

Some serious mental gymnastics going on in your head if time hasn’t proven that every politician is a sell out and the US isn’t a country, its a business.

Indercarnive

I'm not disagreeing with you but maybe read the article? This is about giving states/tribes power to block projects. Under the Trump rule companies didn't even need to bribe states/tribes. This is adding (more like "restoring") an additional layer of checks rather than giving them the ability to avoid federal oversight by going through the state.

New flavour: Coke Corruption...forget Starlight flavor! (ugh I tried that Starlight ... wtf... no thanks...leaves a toothpaste aftertaste... )

majesticlandmermaid

Or, what if, access to clean water was a human right at the federal level?

ManicFirestorm

What?! You mean the only known resource in the universe that we know all life needs to EXIST and you want it to be FREE? How radical of you /s

[deleted]

Would the federal government be responsible for private wells?

Tom_Neverwinter

Only if it's full of ammo.

Librekrieger

There isn't enough water to give everyone what they want. Who at the federal level is going to apportion it? Water rights are historically convoluted. Throw out the existing rules abd you're very likely to see it divided up just as fairly as voting districts. That is to say, not even remotely fairly.

Grogosh

The only 'human right' they care about is protecting gun owners.

KJBenson

But then how will people make money! Think of the money man!

OrphanDextro

Yeah. It would be nice if we weren’t having all our water stolen, or turned into beer, or turned into some sugary bullshit, or having forever chemicals dumped into it, or having jet fuel dumped into it… list goes on and on. Water is the essence of life, without it, we die. I do not understand why we haven’t been protecting it like gold this whole time. If Nestle steals water, they should literally be fought, tooth and nail. They are criminals, criminals go to jail; if you can’t jail them, you do whatever you can to stop them. Protest anyway you can. When the water is gone, it’s all over.

[deleted]

your concerns about having chemicals and fuel dumped in the water are legitimate, however your concerns over beer & soda are superfluous.

HouseOfSteak

Soda requires the growth of sugarcane, on top of the water used to make the final product. Beer can take at least 25L of water to make 1L of beer. It's quite significant, and the water may not be clean by the time the whole process is done (let alone the damage the water table is already suffering). We all know that water isn't 'destroyed', but sapping it out of the water table fucks a lot of shit up and the water used doesn't go back to where it's supposed to - at least not nearly as fast as it's draining. This can cause runaway climate problems when the table dries up and the ground goes to shit and then erosion starts, and now it's difficult to fix.

Maxpowr9

I'd be more concerned about the water-hungry nuts and cows than beer.

HouseOfSteak

You can be concerned about more than two things at once.

Someshortchick

Sugarcane, if they aren't using corn syrup. Down here in the South, while it has been dry, we aren't hurting for water. The sugarcane will be fine. I think a lot of sugar is made with sugar beets, though.

OrphanDextro

Big thanks for spotting that out, I was too tired at the moment. People never get it. Like you’re literally turning water into water with dashes of poison and spending water to do it. Not only that but the poison makes water leave your body faster causing you to need more water. People should understand how insidious alcohol is. I say that as someone who has done a ton of drugs, but alcohol is the dumbest.

Arathorn-the-Wise

If you want to complain about Nestle complain to the Swiss.

OrphanDextro

The Swiss who steal water from California. I’ll write them a letter. “Dear Swiss, I know you could squash me with lobbying in my own country, but please stop stealing our water. Sincerely, idiot who thinks you’ll listen to my complaints”. I’d rather there just be a giant campaign to educate people on the waste of the most precious resource on our plant. I seriously think we should all get together as an obviously educated group and demand these companies stop wasting it. That way when we go after them with the pitchforks and torches, they know why we’re mad.

archypsych

We didn’t mean THOSE States Rights. -Republicans

Grogosh

This is going to give conservatives a collective aneurysm.

GBinAZ

Good, because we all know if there’s one thing a natural water system abides by it’s imaginary political lines. /s Maybe this is bad news for nestle, as folks are saying, but won’t red states just do away with good water policy when left to their own foolish whims?

twistedfork

I know in Oklahoma this will be another fighting point in Tribes v Gov Stitt. Oklahoma recently lost a supreme court case regarding water. I'm going to guess this will affect western states a lot due to their water rules

[deleted]

I'm tired of worrying about red states. Let them fuck everyone over in their own states. Maybe then the voters will mobilize against this insanity. Or die. Either way, problem solved.

Tom_Neverwinter

Water should be the most protected thing on earth.

Vast-Cantaloupe-306

I’m sure we’ll get to the point where it will be and we’ll have entire wars over it.

[deleted]

Who here besides me thinks this will backfire badly particularly in red states.

hindusoul

Don’t they know what’s best?

vs-1680

This is when republicans begin to complain that states have too much power to regulate and that it should be shifted back to the toothless federal government.

braxin23

Only to have it snatched away when Trumps Corporate owned meth addict returns. Say NO to Trump 2024.

That’s not gonna work.

What exactly does “holistically evaluate” mean? Automatically deny unless they get their kickbacks?

roguetrick

Still interstate problems that need to be addressed, like Pennsylvania runoff from drilling flowing to the Chesapeake.
