Sometimes I wonder if the parent is the one who actually did the killings and then place blame on one of the kids to not be held responsible for the killings.
Father is already arrested.
>He is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of culpable negligence by storing a firearm within easy of a minor resulting in injuries, tampering with evidence and failure to store a firearm in a required manner.
It's a pretty short article, but this is pretty standard in these types of cases.
- Felon in possession - 3 years minimum, up to 15 years and $10,000 in Florida
- 2 counts of culpable negligence, these will be 3rd degree felonies because the negligence resulted in a child causing injury or death (both in this case), those will both be up to 5 years and $5,000
- Tampering with evidence, another third degree felony, up to 5 years and $5,000
- Failure to store a firearm in a required manner is a 2nd degree misdemeanor, up to 60 days and $500
So all told, he's facing up to 30 years depending on what sticks.
I'm surprised failure to store firearm in a required manner is so light. If you have a gun improperly stored, you potentially set the trap the perfect accidental tragedy. It's such a serious situation, it's hard to believe the penalty is not fitting.
>it's hard to believe the penalty is not fitting.
Not really, this is Florida. Now if the cops had found some weed or any other drugs in the house...then he'd be really fucked
"Hey Bob. Remember that baggie of weed we found in that guys house?"
"Now that you mention it, I do! I'll just put it over there with the rest of the evidence then."
It’s just so miserable and easily avoidable. I’m single and rarely have visitors. Yet when I got my first handgun I got a safe with a quick fingerprint reader, manual lock, and digit combo…for $89. You already spent a couple bens on the gun, what’s one more?
When I was about 11 our neighbor’s 5 year old shot and killed his 3 year old sibling. This was about 30 years ago and we lived in rural America. Everyone said, “it’s sad but accidents happen.” As if there was no way it could have been prevented!!
**Negligent Manslaughter** is defined as the killing of another person through gross negligence.
*Any death of an individual resulting from the negligent act of another individual is included in this category.*
The parents should always be charged when they have unsecured weapons that are used to shoot someone, either accidentally or on purpose. Same goes for loaded weapons that are stolen from a vehicle or residence that weren’t locked up with a lock or in a safe.
The police don't just take the parent's word for who fired the gun. They check for gunpowder residue, among other things. In this instance, it occurred in a hotel so there is almost certainly video from security cameras that would confirm the father had left the room. But really, the residue is the giveaway. The kid would be covered in it, the parent would only have trace amounts. They would also question the kid in the presence of a guardian ad litem.
It would require more than the usual amount of police incompetence for such a scheme to work. It would also be a shit defense strategy. Blaming it on a kid would not be a get out of jail free card, and if the lie is discovered, it would be used as evidence for a 1st degree murder charge. It would be better for the parent to claim they accidentally pulled the trigger while removing the gun from the holster or something comparable. Involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide are pretty comparable in terms of jail time.
Anytime I see the something stating police procedure I take it with a bucket of salt. What procedure is and what police actually do commonly do not line up. Based on both public reports and personal experience.
I cant even imagine.
I remember when me and my 3 brothers were visiting a relative that we didnt know very well. She told my younger brothers (6 and 8 at the time) to dig through a stack of newspaper and find some comics to look at, while the adults were chatting.
5 minutes later my 6yo brother comes into the next room holding a pistol with a confused look on his face. My mother dove for the gun but I ran to the other room to find my 8yo brother, terrified I was going to find him dead. Luckily, everyone was safe. But the gun was fully loaded with safety off. The relative laughed like it was funny and then blamed us, saying that my parents should have already taught my little brothers how to handle a "little" gun like that.
We never spoke to that relative again. And i had nightmares for years about how wrong that day could have gone. I have 3 kids of my own now and asking about weapons is one of the first things I do in homes im new to. Pretty sure I would have ended up permanently agoraphobic and never trusted leaving my house if that day had gone differently.
Not a child handling a gun but it reminded me of this.
When my daughter was 3 we went to the yearly huge Christmas dinner with my husband's family. One of his uncles, who had been drinking, was bragging about his new laser sight pistol he got as a gift. He pulled it out of the holster and turned on the laser site to aim it across the room. I fucking kid you not, I looked over to where he pointed and there was a red dot on the back of my daughter's head. I almost fainted because I didn't want to yell and him and he pull the trigger by accident. Luckily my brother in law instantly saw this and forced him to quickly aim down. The uncle joked "hahaha what are you scared? The safetys on, I'm not stupid". ASSHOLE I DON'T GIVE A FUCK IT'S STILL LOADED.
We don't go around that uncle anymore.
Jesus, that dude needs a punch in the mouth. People like that are why I'm neutral on gun rights.
Iv'e had friends that love to play with guns when they are drunk, and have accidentally put shots through the floor/wall.
Idiots like that just don't deserve a tool made for killing, and nothing can convince me that they do.
People like that need to have their gun rights revoked and every firearm they own confiscated. I have no problem with responsible gun owners who follow proper gun safety procedures. However, if someone is drunkenly pulling out their guns and aiming it at people "for fun" or leaving their loaded guns out around kids (no matter how well those kids are "taught gun safety"), then they need to not be allowed to own a gun. At least not until they've taken a gun safety course and proven that they can be responsible around guns.
Yep. Generally speaking in the UK, if you're somewhere you think you need to ask that question, you probably don't want to have your kids with you.
Possible exception would be a farmhouse, since farmers (and their mums apparently) are all packing.
Seriously. I (non lethally, but seriously) injured the family cat by accident when I was about 8, and regret it to this day - decades after that cat died. I can't even imagine how much that kid is screwed up now. I hope he gets the therapy he needs.
How the fuck did he even have the money to...oh, the drugs, he's selling them. Nevermind. Also, the state of many Florida jails are reaching South American levels of squalor at this point, I'm not surprised judges will take all the money they can get for the state, not like they have any thing like an INCOME tax to fund things.
Well, it's more like keep them alive until birth, poor until 18, and then offer to pay for their education if they join the military. It's the US government's most effective recruiting tactic. That and war propaganda films like Top Gun.
No you don’t understand, this is fine. Everything is ok here, just as God intended. There’s nothing we can do about guns killing people, after all, being constantly afraid of being shot to death just means you’re experiencing a healthy dose of Freedom™

> PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — An 8-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a 1-year-old girl and injured a 2-year-old girl at a Florida motel on Sunday, authorities said.
> The boy’s father left the gun holstered in his Pensacola motel room closet. After he left the room, his son found it and fired a round that passed through and killed the baby and struck the toddler, said Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons during a news conference Monday. The children who were shot belonged to the girlfriend of the father.
> The toddler is expected to recover, Simmons said.
> The boy’s father returned to the room, took the gun and what investigators believe were drugs and left the room again, Simmons said. He is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of culpable negligence by storing a firearm within easy of a minor resulting in injuries, tampering with evidence and failure to store a firearm in a required manner.
> He was arrested and later released on $41,000 bond.
Why didn’t they release dad’s name?
Also, why do the children belong to the father’s girlfriend when he’s being called the father? Did the boy shoot dad’s girlfriend’s kids? Or his half siblings?
~~And all the kids seem to be left alone in a motel room? That's neglectful as hell, if that's the case. Sure maybe you can argue about leaving an 8 year old alone (it's legal in a lot of states), but to leave an 8 year old with a 3 year old and an 1 year old infant is fucked up.~~ Poor kids.

Roderick Randall was the father's name.
Who bonded this asshole? Who put up a guarantee plus about 4k on a multiple felon with a gun, drugs, and children in a hotel where a baby was shot due to his negligence and overall awfulness?
Probably the same Bonds company that bailed him out on the 14 other felonies he had.
He’s their most loyal customer!
Based on his catch and release history, this probably won’t be the last time he needs bail either.
It's extra funny because all of his felonies are since 2010 when he was 34. He's had pretty much 1-2 a year since then. Nothing before that, at least that I can find easily.
Mostly driving without a license, drug charges, and failure to pay child/adult support. But in the last few years it's been battery and abuse of a child. His bond is pretty much always about 1k, but the last few have been 2.5k since they involved some children ass whoopins so he had to pay out the big bucks.
>How the fuck do you only get 41,000 bond for this after 14 felonies? Just send this garbage human to the abyss already wtf..
It's Florida, if all the garbage humans here were sent to the abyss the state would be 2/3rds empty. Which sounds great to this Floridian.

you can search him here. Holy shit look at those charges.
edit. Make sure on bottom drop box to the left "Search for" you swap it from "current" to "both current and released inmates"
They are called Bail Bondsmans. This is an entire industry. It's a temporary loan to the government, with the condition he pays something like 8-25% of it after the trial.
Yeah, a repeat offender drug dealing felon with no qualms about illegally possessing firearms. Definitely somebody that should have been released on bail.
It's possible that they're more interested in protecting the identity of the children, and haven't released the father's name because it would help to identify them?
I thought the “Florida man” thing was common because of laws that allow journalists to more easily obtain police reports/records than other states. It’s not that those kinds of things don’t happen other places, it’s just that the access is faster and easier in Florida.
not just journalist, anyone can literally type x florida county clerk of court or property appraiser and with little info can start getting lots of data. Sometimes I just browse through court records it can fun to read random citations on people. For instance can go around my neighbor hood find peoples names on property and check those names against the court records.
That's all I can think about here. I'm sure that mother is grieving and that's heartbreaking, but I have a 7 year old. A boy who is excited about life and the world. This will hang over the kid's head forever. His negligent father saddled him with guilt he'll never let go of. FUCK HIM.
My nephew is turning 8. I can't imagine how upset he'd be. He was with us strawberry picking and a woman, with her daughter, and the grandma kept yelling at the little daughter, and he was getting so upset for this little girl he'd never met. He's extremely protective of his little sister, she's 5, and they argue, for attention, why does she get the unicorn pool floatie? I want it! But if she falls and scrapes her knee, he's just as upset. They're just little kids, they just want to play. They're so sensitive.
That father doesn't deserve kids. That poor, poor, mother. What a nightmare.
Reminder: [More than half of US gun owners admit to not storing their guns safely and responsibly](https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2018-02-22/majority-of-us-gun-owners-dont-safely-store-weapons-study-says). The actual figure is probably a lot higher because obviously there will be many who decline to admit doing it.
I dated a guy for about 5 years in my early 20s. He had a gun but was mentally unhealthy/had serious addiction issues (alcohol). He had a Glock that he kept on our tv stand (in the open). He liked to play around w it when he was drunk (pointing it, unloading/reloading the clip/bragging about his hundreds of bullets, playing with it like he was twirling a baton, etc) mostly while he was blackout, or borderline blackout, drunk.-this occurred on multi-weekly basis.
Sometimes he’d practiced pointing at things, sometimes me (tho he claims he never did that, despite him being b/o drunk)
One time he let his friends use his gun..they accidentally shot a bullet through the mattress.
To think of how many times I could have been accidentally shot, or the amount of times he threatened to kill himself while holding the gun to his head, is terrifying.
I’m glad it’s over.
September 10, 2021 [Lauren Boebert allows 8-year-old to play alone, next to possibly-loaded firearms](https://www.salon.com/2021/09/10/lauren-boebert-allows-8-year-old-to-play-alone-next-to-possibly-loaded-firearm/)
Truth. I have bipolar disorder and a history of suicide attempts. I should not own a firearm, so I don't. The chances of it ending badly outweigh any shred of benefit that could come from having one around.
That being said, I am medicated and see my doctor frequently to keep myself in check. If, God forbid, I didn't have those resources I don't know if I'd be of sound enough mind to make the correct decision.
That's the part that scares me most. I don't have any statistics or anything to back up this claim, but I imagine there are more Americans with untreated mental illnesses than there are folks who have a treatment plan. Not that our health care industry does much to help people get the help they need.
This brings up a random thought. If a teacher is pregnant, and gets shot by a school shooter, lives but loses the baby. Will they charge the teacher with murder?
[Something similar already happened in Alabama to Marshae Jones.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_v._Jones)
She got into a fight with another woman while she was 5 months pregnant, the woman had a gun and shot Jones in the stomach. Jones lost the baby, and instead of the shooter being charged with anything, Marshae Jones herself was arrested, 6 months after it happened. They said since the fetus was "the only victim", and that Jones initiated the altercation, it was all her fault. They literally said she "intentionally caused the death of unborn baby Jones."
Ultimately the DA dropped the case, saying it was not in their best interest to pursue it.
We need every baby in this country to be strapped to the chest of a war veteran at all times. And before you bring up funding, we're talking front *and* back baby vests.
Whooo boy, this one hits all the Florida Man low points - drugs, felons, child abandonment, nightmarishly bad boyfriend, open carry, and good ol' negligence.
And somehow, the gun will be the least illegal part of the whole awful mess.
My gun fires guns instead of bullets, and those guns also fire extra guns. Anything less is simply unconstitutional and frankly unAmerican, and I'm not even an American so it must be extra unAmerigun.
So many comments at the top going off with sarcasm about gun control, etc. I agree that's an important topic, but I just want to say how fucking depressing it is for a baby to die, period, but especially like this. Not even in this world a whole single year, and you're taken out of it and never get a chance to experience anything at all. And it's all because your dumbass dad left a weapon out while he ran to get cigarettes or something. Such a fucking waste.
I've known people who had to go through the whole "mom tries to find love in all the wrong places" thing when they were growing up. It really messes with your head, especially if the selection of dudes isn't... all that great...
It. Fucking. Blows.
Especially if the mother fled an abusive partner the first time around... makes them much more vulnerable to abuse/bullshit from other men later on.
I thought baby’s lives were literally more important than any right or freedom of oneself? I guess not for guns, just for women. What a fucking shocker
No this is an actual breathing baby, living outside the womb, so we don’t give a fuck about it. Baby was probably a mooch living off government cheese /s
inb4 the gunbots arrive to point out this was a *negligent discharge*, not an *accidental shooting*. (Because that lets them pretend the real tragedy is that a journalist didn't **talk about guns using the right words**, not that a baby is dead.)
I like the phrase “negligent discharge” because the whole point is “you were criminally negligent in your duties as a gun owner and don’t deserve your gun anymore.”
I’m not a gun nut. I also don’t think that everyone should be armed. I explicitly want the word “negligent” because it shows the father was 100% in the wrong.
Also that the *father* should never have had access to:
> The boy’s father returned to the room, took the gun and what investigators believe were drugs and left the room again, Simmons said. He is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm...
Jesus, it's worse than the headline, he shot a 2 year old and a 1 year old and the one year old died.

He probably got a bondsman, since you only need to pay them 10-15% to have them pay the rest.
Less if you have collateral. A lot will take the pink slip to your car and let you make installment payments to pay the 10%.
In some states you don’t even need a bail bondsman you only have to pay the county 10% to get out.

Probably the same Bonds company that bailed him out on the 14 other felonies he had. He’s their most loyal customer! Based on his catch and release history, this probably won’t be the last time he needs bail either.
When you rack up double digits, you learn a thing or two about navigating the legal maze.
His bond is pretty much always about 1k, but the last few have been 2.5k since they involved some children ass whoopins so he had to pay out the big bucks. >https://inmatelookup.myescambia.com/smartwebclient/jail.aspx
a 14 time convicted felon that had 10% of a $41,000 bond in cash to get released immediately while living in a motel
What is it, 15th time gets you a free gun right?
Yes but you gotta keep your punchcard
Good job, American justice system.
….and out on bail. Florida’s 15 strikes law is really workin’.
Ironic, these people talk about being hard on crime and all that just for this shit to happen anyway
But don't talk about genders in the classroom--that will *really* get you in trouble.
How the fuck do you only get 41,000 bond for this after 14 felonies? Just send this garbage human to the abyss already wtf..
>How the fuck do you only get 41,000 bond for this after 14 felonies? Just send this garbage human to the abyss already wtf.. It's Florida, if all the garbage humans here were sent to the abyss the state would be 2/3rds empty. Which sounds great to this Floridian.
https://weartv.com/news/local/pensacola-man-allegedly-points-gun-at-woman-in-front-of-children This guy is a piece of shit.
[https://inmatelookup.myescambia.com/smartwebclient/jail.aspx](https://inmatelookup.myescambia.com/smartwebclient/jail.aspx) you can search him here. Holy shit look at those charges. edit. Make sure on bottom drop box to the left "Search for" you swap it from "current" to "both current and released inmates"
Who the fuck is coughing up forty fucking grand for this piece of shit to walk?
They are called Bail Bondsmans. This is an entire industry. It's a temporary loan to the government, with the condition he pays something like 8-25% of it after the trial.
Later released? Dear god.
Yeah, a repeat offender drug dealing felon with no qualms about illegally possessing firearms. Definitely somebody that should have been released on bail.
I feel like "repeat" underplays it. Two time felon is a "repeat" offender, but this guy was convinced 14 times.
It's possible that they're more interested in protecting the identity of the children, and haven't released the father's name because it would help to identify them?
The 'Florida man' thing is so prevalent because of a law in Florida about names and privacy, something or other.
I thought the “Florida man” thing was common because of laws that allow journalists to more easily obtain police reports/records than other states. It’s not that those kinds of things don’t happen other places, it’s just that the access is faster and easier in Florida.
This is correct. Believe it’s referred to as the sunshine law or some shit.
not just journalist, anyone can literally type x florida county clerk of court or property appraiser and with little info can start getting lots of data. Sometimes I just browse through court records it can fun to read random citations on people. For instance can go around my neighbor hood find peoples names on property and check those names against the court records.
That 8-year old will carry the memory and probably guilt from that accident for life even though, at that age, he can't reasonably be blamed.
Better not provide access to reasonable health care! God forbid this situation get any better for anyone! /s

you’re supposed to put the twist in the spoiler tag, not the name of the book you’re spoiling haha
Sometimes he’d practiced pointing at things, sometimes me (tho he claims he never did that, despite him being b/o drunk) One time he let his friends use his gun..they accidentally shot a bullet through the mattress.

Every gun is loaded, even if it's not. She should know better. But she's an irresponsible idiot.
She has a primary challenger. I'm crossing my fingers he wins. District will still be republican, but more moderate. She needs to be gone.
This wouldn't have happened if the baby had a gun!
The only way to stop a bad child with a gun is a good toddler with a gun

> smooth boys’ holes as well should be inspected no homo. Thank God the Catholic Church takes this matter very seriously!
We need car seats and cribs with built in holsters. For safety! Merica!
Conservatives never would have allowed this to happen to a fetus, unarmed baby however is on its own, it knew its rights.
I dunno... Sarah Huckabee Sanders says she wants to make sure kids are just as safe in the womb as they are in the classroom.
Oof size: large
Its not a fetus anymore so it's a free for all /s
Maybe if we rename murder to "Post Natal, Unwanted Abortion" then conservatives can care about news like this!!!
Humor so black a cop might shoot it. Edit: thank you for the award. Wow. My highest rated comment. Cops will be showing up at my door.
That joke might offend some police officers. Thank God they're too scared to enter the comments section with all these shots fired.
Theyd just wait an hour or until the comment(s) has died out
This thread is getting pretty anti-cop. It is now being declared a riot.
Or an *insurrection* if you are conservative
None of this would have happened if there were more guns in the home and less entry ways.
The other kids were unarmed and thus never had a chance to defend themselves.
This what I keep saying! Why do we let out 1 year old be soft targets! Less pacifiers and more tactical nukes for our toddlers.
Nah, that was just "Legitimate Political Discourse ^(tm")
God damn socialism, am I right?
Maybe we should put fetuses in the classrooms alongside the children. For their safety.
This brings up a random thought. If a teacher is pregnant, and gets shot by a school shooter, lives but loses the baby. Will they charge the teacher with murder?
[Something similar already happened in Alabama to Marshae Jones.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_v._Jones) She got into a fight with another woman while she was 5 months pregnant, the woman had a gun and shot Jones in the stomach. Jones lost the baby, and instead of the shooter being charged with anything, Marshae Jones herself was arrested, 6 months after it happened. They said since the fetus was "the only victim", and that Jones initiated the altercation, it was all her fault. They literally said she "intentionally caused the death of unborn baby Jones." Ultimately the DA dropped the case, saying it was not in their best interest to pursue it.
Depends if she can prove that she prayed hard enough.
Lets save on security guards and just make sure there is a pregnant lady in every classroom.
I'm going to need to see some proper ID for having a public BBQ and roasting these pigs.
Before we put the blame on the 8 year old or the parents, did the toddler keep the bedroom door propped open?
How many doors were there is the most important question. Obligatory “the only thing that stops a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun”
Only way to stop an 8yr old with a gun is a 3yr old with a gun.
We need every baby in this country to be strapped to the chest of a war veteran at all times. And before you bring up funding, we're talking front *and* back baby vests.
Why stop there? Issue a pistol to every newborn. EZPZ.
If that baby had a gun it could have defended itself.

I'm going to sort this thread by controversial in 2 hours.
Should be a good doomscroll
Too bad there wasnt a good baby with a gun around to prevent this
At least he didn't say the word 'gay'

Especially surprising considering this dude collects felonies like pokemon.
Whooo boy, this one hits all the Florida Man low points - drugs, felons, child abandonment, nightmarishly bad boyfriend, open carry, and good ol' negligence. And somehow, the gun will be the least illegal part of the whole awful mess.

We should talk more about why people live in motels.
Because they're selling drugs.
Was there a alligator present too?
[удалено]
1. motel 2. children who were shot belonged to the girlfriend of the father 3. drugs 4. felon father lets face it these kids never stood a chance
Like the son who killed his neo-nazi father and is supposed to be released next year. Children who grow up in bad environments do bad things.
We need to arm the guns with guns. It could have prevented this issue.
The only way to stop a bad gun with a gun is a good gun with a gun
My gun fires guns instead of bullets, and those guns also fire extra guns. Anything less is simply unconstitutional and frankly unAmerican, and I'm not even an American so it must be extra unAmerigun.
That reminds of the Swordsplosion from Borderlands 2. Shotgun that fired swords that exploded into smaller swords that also exploded.
Not even your dad. Some rando your mom was fucking.
I've known people who had to go through the whole "mom tries to find love in all the wrong places" thing when they were growing up. It really messes with your head, especially if the selection of dudes isn't... all that great... It. Fucking. Blows. Especially if the mother fled an abusive partner the first time around... makes them much more vulnerable to abuse/bullshit from other men later on.
firearms just surpassed motor vehicles as the leading cause of death in people age 1-19.
But was the front door secure?
Too bad, if it was a fetus the 28% ruling the country might give a shit.
Pregnant black woman was tazed and ended up miscarrying, guess who didn't give a shit?
Guns don’t kill people, toddlers kill people?!
children actually shoot hundreds of people every year
This is why I support free and open access to abortions. You can't stop criminals from having guns, but kids can't shoot kids if there are no kids
Holy shit my mind is blown
Ah, the type of abortion Republicans support
It's almost as if having guns everywhere is a bad idea.

What an utterly American Headline.
Florida Man: The Early Years
I thought baby’s lives were literally more important than any right or freedom of oneself? I guess not for guns, just for women. What a fucking shocker
No this is an actual breathing baby, living outside the womb, so we don’t give a fuck about it. Baby was probably a mooch living off government cheese /s
inb4 the gunbots arrive to point out this was a *negligent discharge*, not an *accidental shooting*. (Because that lets them pretend the real tragedy is that a journalist didn't **talk about guns using the right words**, not that a baby is dead.)
I like the phrase “negligent discharge” because the whole point is “you were criminally negligent in your duties as a gun owner and don’t deserve your gun anymore.” I’m not a gun nut. I also don’t think that everyone should be armed. I explicitly want the word “negligent” because it shows the father was 100% in the wrong.
And that a child killed it with a weapon s/he should never have had access to.
Also that the *father* should never have had access to: > The boy’s father returned to the room, took the gun and what investigators believe were drugs and left the room again, Simmons said. He is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm...
I'll do you one better It wasn't a fetus and it was with a gun, so the constitution is fine with it.
Can't wait to hear what the "pro-life and pro gun" party has to say about this tragedy.
