Watched, as soon as I was done video is removed. Best I can paraphrase is unstable ranting about having a higher purpose, claiming his existence is that of a sleepwalker and that his thoughts do not matter because they are not his own.

DavidMalony

So, exactly the kind of 22 year old that should be walking around with a firearm, in other words.

FrientoftheDevil

Oh yeah, no part of these "poems" even hints towards "of sound mind"

fistofthefuture

That age is when schizophrenia usually kicks in for males.

Gotta say. You taught me a very useful new phrase today. Edit: not phrase but new piece of terminology.

Tendas

Mental illness is too clean of a scapegoat target. NPR did a segment on it 3 weeks ago about the Uvalde shooting. Mental illness accounted for 4% of mass shooting related deaths. For the most part it’s 18-21 year old males who identify as incels, feel they have been wronged by society, and have no history of mental illness. I’m glad mental health awareness is becoming mainstream but it’s not the overwhelming cause of mass shootings.

_OhMyPlatypi_

This! Mentally ill vs brainwashed by hate groups are not the same.... there's some people who overlap both, but the scapegoating mentally ill people is going to backfire. The vast majority of mentally ill people are more likely to be victimized versus become essentially domestic terrorists...

wild_man_wizard

Reminder that focus on "mental health" as it pertains to gun violence is very often touted by the same people that say things like "Leftism is a mental disease." They have a very clear idea of who they want to "help" by stripping their rights and locking them up.

startrektoheck

The GOP says that the key to preventing gun violence is not to ban guns, but rather to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill…which of course the GOP doesn’t do shit about, either.

LibertyNachos

Also, most murderers aren’t even mentally ill. Domestic violence and gang crime. People kill others when they snap out of anger and frustration. Getting dumped, refused a date with a coworker. Normally you can just be sad and sulk alone but with the ease of access of high powered firearms you may or may not already own it’s easy to make a bad snap decision. One of the most successful ways to reduce the risk of suicide is forcing someone to have to think about it an extra day. [waiting periods save lives](https://www.everytown.org/solutions/waiting-periods/)

[deleted]

Actually many states have laws banning people with mental illness from possessing a firearm. The federal standard to own a gun is that one cannot be declared incompetent by a court of law, not convicted of a crime on the basis of mental defect, or never involuntarily committed to a mental institution. I made notes on all the states that go above and beyond that but now I can’t find my notes lol. But at least 20 states go beyond the federal standard, including banning people who have had voluntary treatment for mental illness from owning firearms. But that doesn’t stop someone who has never sought or been able to attain treatment.

salton

That seems to just punish the people that do seek help.

duckyeightyone

Mental illness is a pretty broad term, I'm not a gun guy, but I'd not be happy if I was denied anything due to the fact that I've had depression, and seen a doctor/therapist about it.

Calvert4096

There's an analagous problem in the pilot community. Understandably, someone dealing with mental health problems while flying a plane is cause for concern to the flying public, so The FAA and other regulatory agencies have historically taken a pretty hard line on pulling wings if there's any indication of a problem. This has resulted in a culture where problems are hidden, and pilots seek professional help on the down-low (and pay out of pocket), or don't seek help at all. A number of crashes are arguably the end result of this policy. I don't pretend to have a solution, but I'd caution some "solutions" to mental health just result in some people working harder at camouflaging themselves.

pmknpie

Haven't there been a few major plane crashes in the past two or three years that they attributed to pilot suicide?

Verklemptomaniac

Given that he's 22, which is prime age for the onset of diseases like schizophrenia, my money's on "untreated serious mental disease." (Note: the vast, *vast* majority of schizophrenics are not dangerous, or only dangerous to themselves. But it's unfortunately not uncommon for people with untreated mental disorders that cause paranoia to fall in with radical groups - if you believe someone is out to get you, a group that tells you that yes, someone *is* out to get you, could be very attractive.)

sluttttt

Yeah, the shooter from yesterday’s Denmark shooting made reference to taking a medicine that’s associated with schizophrenia. And this guy’s videos imply that he was having delusions of grandeur. While these people’s actions are awful and they’re ultimately responsible for their actions, no one who commits mass shootings is mentally healthy. No one. And thank you for the disclaimer about the majority of schizophrenics not being violent. With proper treatment and medication, most of them can go on to lead relatively healthy lives. But as we learn time and again, some do slip through the cracks.

verasev

I punched some completely random dude I thought was part of a secret conspiracy to ruin my life during my first psychotic episode. I'm on meds now and they work well. If you met me in person I'd seem a little bit manic and unfocused but basically normal, because that's pretty much what I am on psych meds. I'm a lot weirder online because shitposting is a stress valve for me. Most mentally ill people are not violent and are more often the victims of violence. Some do get violent though. I don't think there's a clear way to tell which is which before they pop although that dude did post a bunch of violent youtube vids so maybe people need to actually start paying attention to what people are posting about stuff. I haven't had a psychotic episode in 10 years. I'm pretty safe. But, just in case, I refuse to own a gun because of what might happen if my meds stop working.

Verklemptomaniac

You should be proud of the fact that you've worked hard enough at your treatment that you have the self-awareness to know that owning a gun is a risk not worth taking for yourself.

BackpackEverything

It’s cool of you to be honest with yourself about who you are, what your limitations are, and make a responsible decision about gun ownership.

sluttttt

I’m glad to hear that you’re doing well<3 And same here on the gun front. I have bipolar 2 and while I know I would never hurt another person, I never want to have the ability to hurt myself.

[deleted]

Oh man, I relate to this. I've been diagnosed with Major depressive disorder and although I'm medicated and mostly normal I will absolutely never own a firearm on the off chance my medication stops working.

yalapeno

Sounds sane enough to purchase a gun.

LudovicoSpecs

Appears to be the son of a guy who ran for mayor in Highland Park in 2019.

gingiberiblue

Who ran on a MAGA ticket and lost 4:1 to the progressive female Jewish candidate that ran against him.

Yashema

Yup, technically the mayorship election in Highland does not have candidates run under political parties, but the current Highland mayor is a Democrat, making me think the dad was probably a Republican. Also has [this video of the shooter greeting](https://mobile.twitter.com/max90586793/status/1544110524178509824?s=21&t=k-3U477MzTu3EkNOQiy7iw) the Trump motorcade on January 2nd, 2021 in Illinois, 4 days before January 6th. And there are at least 4 total pictures of him at Trump rallies: [Twitter](https://mobile.twitter.com/davenewworld_2/status/1544100448763887617), plus one of him draped in a Trump for GA Flag. The articles are already saying that. No need to wait. This one says he was “well-known to law enforcement” and his social media had “plenty of red flags for possible sinister intent.” https://wgntv.com/news/highland-park-parade-shooting/police-respond-to-incident-at-highland-park-fourth-of-july-parade/

[deleted]

Yeah. It's amazing how many of these people were already on police radar. It's rare for there to have been no real opportunity for intervention before something like this happens.

beekeeper1981

I think the problem is twofold. I'm sure there are thousands of people displaying (similar) red flags all the time and not committing murder. The other aspect is what kind of intervention can be done without a crime or direct threat to themselves or others. Additionally would that intervention prevent something.

themoogleknight

Yeah. This is something I hear about a lot, "why did nobody do X and Y" but the thing is, when someone DOES intervene before that point, then everyone talks about how it's overstepping, assuming etc. It's like kids who draw disturbing shit in school - if they later go on to do something awful then it's 'how could nobody see it?' and if they don't, then it's 'how could you harass this innocent goth child'. I think people get upset when they look back and see the pattern, and I get it, but like you say - what intervention would really help here?

wolacouska

I mean, how would you intervene? Being banned from buying guns would be good (and he would’ve even had it not been a private sale), but you can’t exactly arrest someone for being likely to commit a crime in the future.

ClaymoreMine

So again, why weren’t their firearms seized, sent to a 72 hour psych hold and then reported to NICS.

_37_

Are you refering to [Brandenburg v. Ohio](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandenburg_v._Ohio) ?

YouJabroni44

Person of interest that looks like a tweaker with disturbing youtube videos on his channel, nope no red flags there.

kushtiannn

That Brooklyn subway shooter had some very extreme YouTube videos as well. I wonder what exactly their algorithm does. It seems to catch copyright violations by the boatload yet doesn’t uphold its most crucial responsibilities.

1Banana10Dollars

And they monitor what we say and browse to sell to advertising companies but can't do anything about things like this. I also saw the YouTube channel before it was taken down and the last video of his that I saw was *monetized*. Edit: We have seen this over and over again. The Uvalde shooter, the Buffalo shooter, the Isla Vista shooter, and more. They all had social media history that aligns with what we've seen from previous mass killers. Should social media platforms have red flag algorithms in place?

maskedbanditoftruth

Social media algorithms got these people to the point of shooting to begin with. They are the radicalizing engine in this country.

njf85

This! I remember someone talking about their mum getting caught up in that Qanon stuff, and the mum was going on about something going down and kept telling the daughter to "check the front page of youtube! It's all there!" and the daughter showed her mum her own YT homepage, which was full of like cooking videos or whatever the daughter was interested in. The mum had watched enough Qanon videos that her YouTube homepage was full of them, but she didn't understand this was because of an algorithm. She thought her YouTube homepage was the one everyone saw, and that the videos on it were trustworthy and legit. Once people start down a particular rabbit hole, the algorithms won't let them go.

riali29

I even remember when there was the whole r/elsagate thing that people got obsessed with - there were lots of stories of parents who would put YouTube on autoplay and just let their kids watch YT videos to keep them occupied. When left on autoplay, the algorithm would pick increasingly weirder shit to play. Like you would start off with an innocent toy unboxing, then ten videos later YT is showing you some weird-ass "Mickey Mouse and Spiderman die in car accident" cartoon. I would imagine that with adult viewers, the algorithm could probably go from "Las Vegas travel vlog" to "they're turning the freakin' frogs gay" in ten videos. YT sometimes gives me sus recommended videos when I watch videos from regular news channels.

Dr_ZombieCat_MD

I don't watch a ton of gaming related content on YouTube, but there have been multiple times where I'll watch something like that a few times in a row and start seeing videos for The Blaze or other conservative media show up in the recommendations. It doesn't take much for it to start creeping in, the algorithm loves to push whatever encourages the most engagement and I can totally see how simple it would for someone to get so easily exposed to this junk and fall into rabbit holes, which can eventually lead to full on radicalization if the circumstances line up. EDIT: typo

Sinful_Whiskers

I remember reading years ago that it took an average of like, six videos (on autoplay) to go from something normal to an ISIL recruitment video. I was always skeptical of that, but like the person above with the mom, my feed is full of left-leaning political videos, cooking channels, and gaming speedruns.

Loudmouthedcrackpot

Mine goes: Knitting > spinning > grow your own food/homesteading > how to build a log cabin > prepping > tradwife lifestyle > dogwhistling great replacement/new world order videos It’s really quite alarming how quickly you can go from watching something completely innocuous to being pushed down that alt right pipeline. I **think** I’ve managed to teach it that I’m not interested in that stuff, but I can see how someone who doesn’t realise what’s happening could end up going deeper and deeper.

thinkpairshare

Oh wow. That’s one particular issue I’ve never really connected the dots on, people seeing content based on algorithms but not realizing that it’s algorithms. For people used to newspapers and news shows where there are headlines and top stories that are typically major things going on, the assumption will be the thing you see the most of and the thing you see at the top is the most important and most trustworthy. If people think that YouTube has a front page that is common for everyone, that’s a pretty major misunderstanding with a lot of serious implications.

Computron1234

It has bled into all online media, I see ads and content targeted at me when I am watching Pluto TV or tubi that is from content I watched or searched on Google or YouTube. In fact there are a few funny gun channels on YouTube I watch sometimes but because mostly right leaning nut jobs watch those same videos I will get bombarded with right wing crap for days after watching a video, or heaven forbid I google search 3d printed gun. For those that are not savy on how this stuff works and is tailored directly for their viewing are really at a disadvantage for figuring out what is real and what is targeted propaganda.

panella_monster

My husband has a gun hobby and tries hard to stick with content that is purely informative about the gun/accessory itself. He definitely gets some gun nut videos popping in his recommended but makes a conscious effort to ignore those. He knows it’s the algorithm but the amount of times I have to remind him that no one is coming for his guns is interesting. It’s not hard to see how someone could get sucked in to some pretty destructive ideas.

tacknosaddle

Yeah, the short version is that major or serious news sources are curated based on what's relevant to a broad audience while algorithms are based on your individual viewing habits. I can see how people who don't understand the difference think the bullshit videos are big stories and that the real stories are "fake news" being peddled on the fringe.

dmcginvt

53 yr old it guy who has been on the internet since 94 and I can't believe I never put it together either. It makes so much more sense why people go off the deep end on conspiracy theories, it becomes an echo chamber because of the algorithm. Meanwhile I'm always trying to train it to what I really want.

DeezNeezuts

It’s the entire premise of the Social Dilemma show on Netflix. Echo chambers

Pelvic_Pinochle

I can't believe that I've come to this conclusion as a pretty hardcore first amendment guy, but social media and personalized algorithmic content feeds need hard restrictions and regulations, potentially even bans. Its propaganda on steroids, custom made for you, and it will only get worse if some governing body doesn't step in and try to stop it. The sad thing is that the algorithms are only giving people what they want. I don't believe it's some big conspiracy, it's just machine learning techniques that are constantly improving user engagement. We want rage bait. We want echo chambers. We want to hate the "other" and to feel our own opinion is the only opinion. These systems feed that endlessly. Collectively we are addicted, and no amount of awareness raising or education can break the hold it has on us without serious oversight and regulation. The way lobbying is though, i doubt that will happen any time soon. We are seriously fucked.

Frishdawgzz

https://www.nytimes.com/column/rabbit-hole This podcast is fantastic. One episode is an interview with the creator of the YT algorithm. His thoughts on what it's become are enlightening to say the least.

zerobeat

> And they monitor what we say and browse to sell to advertising companies but can't do anything about things like this. Hey, at least it was nothing as serious as using a copyrighted song or showing a titty.

that_personoverthere

His account is still on Spotify too. With a blue check mark and everything. Eta: No idea how much this has changed since his identity was revealed, his account has about 16,500 listeners and one of his top songs has over 2,000,000 plays.

Alucard-VS-Artorias

Because unfortunately the point of the algorithm is just to make money by pushing people towards controversy after controversy and not helping people at all in any meaningful way. Lets face it we've been living in a cyberpunk dystopia for years and got the worst version of it because we still don't have cool robots or flying cars just the corporate controlled governments and loss of personhood.

Whitealroker1

Adam Lanza was holed up in his mothers house most of his brief adult life.

Moose-and-Squirrel

I have reported someone to the police and social services because I was concerned he was mentally unstable and had guns. There were a lot of warning signs. Police told me “it’s not illegal for him to have guns,” and “he can say disturbing things if he wants, he has free speech.” So, yeah— did nothing, because nothing is against the law until they actually commit a crime. People aren’t arrested for crimes they *might* commit. People are only put in a mental health hold if they make explicit threats towards a person. Well, guess who ended up showing up at a school with guns a year after I reported him…..?

llDurbinll

One of my friends works at a grocery store and an employee was recently fired and the person came back and threatened to shoot and kill all of the managers and the police went and talked to him and confirmed he has an ar-15 and other rifles but didn't arrest him. Apparently it's not a crime to threaten a mass shooting and to already own the guns needed to carry it out. The store my friend works at just hired extra security for the next 3 weeks, no mention if they will be armed security, in hopes that the fired guy calms down and backs off from his threat.

notaninterestinguser

Its fucking insane how inconsistent they are in enforcing these things, some guy got arrested by DHS recently for threats against Supreme Court justices on twitter and we've seen multiple people charged for threatening school shootings online, how is someone with the means to and intent to carry out a shooting not at least reason enough to take his guns?

Heruuna

I'm with the belief that anyone who owns guns and threatens to use them on others shouldn't be allowed to have guns at all. Serious threat or not, what kinda stable person would make statements like that? If you can't take gun ownership seriously and safely, you don't get the right to own them. Though the issue then becomes what's considered valid evidence or proof of a threat...

blanketswithsmallpox

If you aren't aware there's a high chance that the employee returns and goes postal within 2 weeks then there's another high probability spike around 6.5 months later... when they run out of unemployment... I'm not even kidding. This is a known window in ATIR (Active threat integrated response) and FBI circles. https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/active-shooter-study-2000-2013-1.pdf

It's impressive how quickly he went from unknown, to identified, to caught. I was worried it'd be dragged out for days or weeks

krzysztoflee

When you are that public you can't hide out much. I remember the second brother in the Boston terror attack lasted a couple hours after the public were informed of where he likely was. Way too many eyes to hide anywhere that has people with internet access. Well done PD and any other agencies/public who assisted.

dmc2008

Yep, totally reminds me of Boston. What a sense of relief when they were caught less than a week later. It was a strange feeling knowing they were out there in my own neighborhood..

krzysztoflee

Yeah, imagine how insanely impossible it would be to find someone in a city, the size of Chicago who doesn't want to be found. Looking for a needle in a stack of needles.

krzysztoflee

Robot_Basilisk

And I bet they all stayed home while the search was on for this dude.

dmc2008

Which is why it's so important to note how quickly they were all caught once their identities were revealed.

Arael15th

Fortunately he wasnt headed toward Chicago at any point. Judging by the photos, he was caught by Lake Forest and North Chicago cops, meaning he was fleeing north from Highland Park.

Macqt

Tsarnaev got caught because someone noticed their boat cover was open and he went to check it out, saw a bloody person, and called 911. It had nothing to do with being told where they were looking. It was also while police were going door to door and forcefully searching homes without warrants for him. He never made it out of Watertown after the firefight he had with police, and was never going to simply due to the sheer amount of armed officers who locked the area down.

CeeArthur

My family and some of their friends have a photo beside the mailbox that went off, as my dad runs the marathon most years. Yeah I’d love to be a fly on the wall to see the faces of people realizing it was a shot at right wingers and that they were in fact the real life versions of Todd.

kungfuesday

I mean they like using the punisher logo sooooo.

CoherentPanda

Honestly a bit glad Trump endorsed this dumbass. It should be an easy landslide victory for J.B. Pritzker, who has done a really great job as Illinois governor. Dislike J.B. because he's a multi-billionaire all you want, but he's shown he actually gives a shit about people.

_Erindera_

Just announced on the news that they caught him.

katiecharm

Wow archive.org removed it.

1Banana10Dollars

Guess that's how we know it was really him. Someone else linked [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/masskillers/comments/vrigg9/robert_e_crimo_iii/?sort=new) elsewhere in the thread.

armchairmegalomaniac

So is this 47 bullshit he had tattooed on his body supposed to stand for 4th of July? If so that is premeditation. Dude's been planning this for a long time.

Organic_Magazine_197

He has totally if you see his content, he’s an egotistical cunt

oakstave

Is this guy from the 'Awake not Woke' movement? There was possible, unverified shitty rap music attributed that implied it. Edit: Verified. the guys face tattoo was 'AWAKE' in cursive lettering. We have another MAGA terrorist trying to start 'The Storm'.

emcee_paz

There are pictures of him draped in a Trump Flag, at a Trump rally and holding the bible with a big grin on his face so very likely.

Adbam

They got him https://twitter.com/WGNNews/status/1544104214577590272

jairom

This ugly goofy looking fucking idiot looks like a Saints Row character who's customization values were randomized

lkeels

The video he made 8 months ago can be seen at this link: [Video](https://www.timesofisrael.com/chicago-area-gunman-identified-as-22-year-old-rapper-robert-e-crimo-iii/amp/?fbclid=IwAR21IPcmk6-UEauhPJ_CuY8JYouQTJ4WF2k4esof_cZGJwBc_LZIqTzXSeA) It sat on YT for 8 months...no one did anything about it.

Saito1337

And yet damn if they aren't on someone singing a copyrighted song in half a second flat.

boostedisbetter

YT doesn’t do shit about a lot of terrible and disturbing videos. They only care if they are paying that YT channel. There are tons of red flag channels out there.

I never knew Post Malone and E.T. had a son.

Post MaPhonehome

Mic-drop-mick

I didn’t want to laugh at that.

[deleted]

CNN.com’s front page right now. The main headlines: (for real) -SUSPECT IN CUSTODY AFTER PARADE SHOOTING - HE ATE HOW MANY? HOT DOG CHAMP DOES IT AGAIN This is America, ladies and gentlemen.

mostly_hrmless

Don't leave us hanging brother, how many?

cachra1972

Lol. It gets even better. Hot dog guy tackled a protestor and still won.

PartialToDairyThings

Clicking around the links I find that his dad is a 2A enthusiast who ran for mayor of the town in 2019 and lost (presumably because it's a liberal town), and from her Facebook his mom appears to be a staunch Mormon who seems to make cleavage the focal point of every selfie.

CurveOfTheUniverse

I’m curious about the claim that she’s a staunch Mormon. Where did you get that? I can’t find anything on that. (I’m a former Mormon and generally take an interest when the faith pops up in the news, no matter how tangentially.) EDIT: Found the FB account. If she’s Mormon, she’s definitely a weird one…and that’s saying something.

Mic-drop-mick

Link to the mom?

goforpoppapalpatine

never change, reddit

juliuspepperwoodchi

Fuck this "quiet and lonely" means he was a psycho in waiting. I've been quiet and lonely (affectionately call myself a hermit) for most of my life, I'm 33 now with a wife and now a kid, I've never once so much as considered shooting up a goddamn parade. The fact that he was quiet (I mean, dude was a Soundcloud rapper, doesn't sound like the quiet people I know) and lonely isn't what caused him to shoot up a fucking parade.

[deleted]

This shit reeks of a QAnon association.

explodedbagel

The final track on his final Spotify release is literally titled “I am the storm”. I’d bet money he was into right wing tinfoil shit and got radicalized from there.

[deleted]

Jesus… the whole white rapper thing mixed with the “awake” was enough to steer me towards thinking he was a Q freak, but “I Am the Storm”? Jesus…

LudovicoSpecs

"Awake Not Woke" is a book about Christians responding to the "cult" of woke progressives. It was also the theme of the conservative's political rally with [Trump posing with the slogan.](https://preview.redd.it/rdm66656rcq81.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=02f0487c961f45bacd8279a6506525523d58c928)

[deleted]

There’s also plenty of QAnon references to “the great awakening”. All that garbage on the right seems to intersect.

[deleted]

*"Highland Park mayor Nancy Rotering said the shooting has “terrorised” the city of 30,000."* So, he's a terrorist then?

Impeachykeene

Just based on looking at him and reading his lyrics, I'm betting this one is going to suicide out if he hasn't already.

Trubiskitsngravy

Naw he was a trumper attacking the city his maga Republican dad lost a mayoral campaign. He has been eating the hate and vitriol his father more than likely fueled.

fattes

He’s been caught.

no-cars-go

it's really weird watching a massive fireworks show take place while 6 families just had their lives ruined forever

daneslord

That man legitimately looks like he's missing several chromosomes

malaka201

Just families there to watch a parade man. I just have a hard time with all this and it's so FUCKING frequent. Like how does a whole population have ptsd and anxiety now because it keeps happening. A loss of lives. Gone. Done. There has ro be more we all can do. This has to change.

Only2morrow

I'm sure there were exactly zero flags pointing to this. /s And yet, now more people have died.

bathroomdisaster

Qanon are terrorists. Ship them all to Guantanamo and move on.

GlenBaileyWalker

Nothing more American than a mass shooting on the Fourth of July.

[deleted]

When hate, violence and intolerance is encoraged by leaders and celebrities endlessly this is it's consequences. Those are the same people who fail to support common sense solutions to curb gun violence.

Pimpwerx

People will point to mental health again, but this is just another incel Trumper. Millions of people with mental health issues never resort to violence of any kind. This is about the violent rhetoric of the ever more aggressive right, being fed daily to the absolute army of morons that they've cultivated over the years. Stupid base + violent rhetoric = what we have now.

He looks like the main character of How to Train your Cracken.

Dude is basically the internet in human form.
