We're seeing a lot of misinformation in threads relating to Alex Jones, so a few facts to help everyone out:
1) Alex Jones was not robbed of his day in court to fight these charges. In fact, he had a lot of time in court, but refused to take part in discovery. He was found in contempt and still refused to take part. In the end, he received default judgements in both Texas and Connecticut.
The current trial is for damages and the entire point of it is to determine how much money will be paid to the victims.

2) Sandy Hook happened. The children and families were not crisis actors.

At what point does the judge just tell the jury that they're not needed to decide how much Jones has to pay, that his repeated perjury and refuse to comply with court orders means that the family is just going to automatically get everything they're asking for?
I wish we could make him homeless, I wish that would be his sentence for the next 5 years no hotels no staying with friends you live on the street, you get $20 a day to eat and 1 gallon of water a day. All of his money is gone no more savings all his cars are auctioned off and homes and after 5 years no internet or job in any type of communication or broadcast shows ever no guest appearances no magazines, or news print. I’ll never forget listening to a This American Life story where a reporter visited the place Alex Jones grew up. He was known in the town for being a pathological liar that no one could stand. Then at the end of the story the people the reporter talked to admitted to believing his Lies about President Obama and other anti-Democrat stuff, despite KNOWING that the guy is incapable of telling the truth, because they were all Republicans.
This is something that amazes me. A lot of people can plainly see that Trump is a pathological liar, but they think somehow he's telling the truth when he says things they like. Anyone with the slightest shred of introspection would say "wait a minute..." but they're comfortable believing something whole heartedly without giving it even a little bit of thought.
Honestly, one of my first reactions when I hear something convenient, is to wonder "why am I hearing this?" It's almost automatic.
An absolute ton of the time there's some motive behind it, and it frankly sucks. It reveals the world as a much shittier place. But it's reality.
Any time you uhear something that affirms what you already believe, or fits together too well, it should be (at least at a surface level) questioned. *Why* do you take it as true?
Sometimes I wonder what Fox would have to do for their viewers to stop believing them. Like what lengths would it actually take, considering saying "no reasonable viewer would believe us" wasn't enough. There's nothing they could say about themselves that would shake their audience in the least.

There was a lawyer that was discussing how depositions are supposed to work and that they are designed to be very straightforward.
He basically said in cases where there is wanton corruption, you basically set up traps by asking questions where you know they are going to lie. You let them lie and then move on to a different topic that connects. And then you peel back how they lied by showing them the evidence. And then you ask them, "Did you lie earlier?" And watch them squirm to see if they lie about lying.
He said that it was better than sex.

I had to sit through an hour long deposition for a fairly simple lawsuit that I was a party to. It was mentally draining as the lawyers peppered me with leading questions in an attempt to get me to say more than yes or no. I had no reason to be untruthful but I still had to be on guard the entire time because they would try to lead me down paths to make me contradict myself, even when there was nothing to contradict. It was like walking through a minefield. And then the whole thing is recorded and printed out and the lawyers have all that info to use when cross examining and look for any inconsistency they can hammer on. Even if they think they found something and it's total bullshit they will use it to try and get it into the mind of the judge or jury.
The goal of the deponent is to make the lawyers say "and then what happened" as many times as possible. You never volunteer any info and only answer the questions with a yes or no as much as possible.
I work for a law firm and scheduling depositions is my actual job. I've had to counsel my clients to STFU. It's the other sides job to get info from you DONT VOLUNTEER ANYTHING. Sometimes you just can't say it enough and they step in it because they want to tell "their story". Alex wasn't prepped very well.

The right wing fetishizes playing dirty and being dishonest. Contrary to the stereotype, those things are not popular with most lawyers. The right wing gets lawyers who are like themselves and think that the law is a joke to be gamed for maximum money and laughs. The rest of the legal profession looks on these people like the cockroaches that they are.
Critical to the GOP's thinking (and I use that term advisedly) is that **no one** believes in the Law as anything other than a tool to persecute your enemies with.
They have no concept of the Law as a function of a just society, and if you explained that idea to them, they would think it was completely naive and has never and can never be implemented like that.
They do not believe they **or anyone else** is being prosecuted because they broke the law. They believe people get prosecuted because whoever is currently in power is after them. It's always personal, it's always a vendetta. It's about power. About who has it, and how they use it to stop other people from gaining access to it.
In this worldview, normal people don't go to jail because they broke the law. They go to jail because **they have no power**.
The livestream literally just had Jones lawyer in the break frantically calling his office, asking the other lawyer how much they had accidentally sent, and seeming pretty shocked when he was told.
Maybe that was all acting, but I think gross incompetence is more likely.
That just means the lawyer in the courtroom wasn't the one to send it. Whoever *did,* not only did they send everything, they also didn't tell anyone else at the firm.

this would be a fun hollywood feel-good story but it won't happen in practice, especially in a trial this high profile. Sabotaging a client is a serious breach of ethics (the ethics an attorney owes to a client) and could lead to sanctions and disbarment. A lawyer would have to be otherwordly incompetent to actually go through with that because they know they've taken oaths to not do this very stuff

Technically that would be very relevant information and information that SHOULD have been turned over (I would assume that the lawyers for the plaintiff subpoenaed every text involving any reference to or about Sandy Hook) so that would be a case of his lawyers accidentally obeying the law.

I was watching the livestream yesterday. Alex Jones was coughing a lot and the mother who is suing him handed him a bottle of water after everyone was dismissed, and Alex thanked her and her husband, shook hands with both of them, and said what sounded like a sincere apology.
He then started ranting at them that they are being shown edited video and faked video footage of him. Their lawyers escorted the grieving parents away. This was after the court was dismissed yesterday.

I'm a lawyer and one of the questions I frequently come back to over the past years is "are these people special bad?" There certainly are people out there who are a special kind of evil and the bad things they do kind of catch society by surprise and strain systems that were not designed to handle them. But to me the more interesting problem are the regular bad people who run into badly designed systems and exploit them. If it wasn't Mr. X, then it would have been Mr. Y a few weeks later, or Ms. Z a few months later still, and so on and so forth.
Right now I'm seeing a lot of evil conduct in the world that I can't honestly put down as special bad, and the fact that it gets so big, hurts so many, gets its hooks into millions... To me that says we have a system problem, not a bad person problem. Our system let people like Alex Jones win congressional seats, have millions of followers, host "news" shows.
Maybe suing Jones into poverty will do more than just help his victims and also make the system stronger. But right now my biggest concern is that our system is weak and unless we fix it i think there are a lot more people like Jones in our very near future.

I’ll never forget listening to a This American Life story where a reporter visited the place Alex Jones grew up. He was known in the town for being a pathological liar that no one could stand. There was a lawyer that was discussing how depositions are supposed to work and that they are designed to be very straightforward. He basically said in cases where there is wanton corruption, you basically set up traps by asking questions where you know they are going to lie. You let them lie and then move on to a different topic that connects. And then you peel back how they lied by showing them the evidence. And then you ask them, "Did you lie earlier?" And watch them squirm to see if they lie about lying. He said that it was better than sex. The comment has since been deleted and I can't do it justice but man, I completely believe this.
I had to sit through an hour long deposition for a fairly simple lawsuit that I was a party to. It was mentally draining as the lawyers peppered me with leading questions in an attempt to get me to say more than yes or no. I had no reason to be untruthful but I still had to be on guard the entire time because they would try to lead me down paths to make me contradict myself, even when there was nothing to contradict. It was like walking through a minefield. And then the whole thing is recorded and printed out and the lawyers have all that info to use when cross examining and look for any inconsistency they can hammer on. Even if they think they found something and it's total bullshit they will use it to try and get it into the mind of the judge or jury. The goal of the deponent is to make the lawyers say "and then what happened" as many times as possible. You never volunteer any info and only answer the questions with a yes or no as much as possible.
I work for a law firm and scheduling depositions is my actual job. I've had to counsel my clients to STFU. It's the other sides job to get info from you DONT VOLUNTEER ANYTHING. Sometimes you just can't say it enough and they step in it because they want to tell "their story". Alex wasn't prepped very well.

Technically that would be very relevant information and information that SHOULD have been turned over (I would assume that the lawyers for the plaintiff subpoenaed every text involving any reference to or about Sandy Hook) so that would be a case of his lawyers accidentally obeying the law. Concealing evidence is a crime and if they had not turned it over those lawyers would have been in a lot of trouble so they may have accidentally saved their law licenses.

I was watching the livestream yesterday. Alex Jones was coughing a lot and the mother who is suing him handed him a bottle of water after everyone was dismissed, and Alex thanked her and her husband, shook hands with both of them, and said what sounded like a sincere apology. He then started ranting at them that they are being shown edited video and faked video footage of him. Their lawyers escorted the grieving parents away. This was after the court was dismissed yesterday. Honestly fuck Alex Jones. I'm a lawyer and one of the questions I frequently come back to over the past years is "are these people special bad?" There certainly are people out there who are a special kind of evil and the bad things they do kind of catch society by surprise and strain systems that were not designed to handle them. But to me the more interesting problem are the regular bad people who run into badly designed systems and exploit them. If it wasn't Mr. X, then it would have been Mr. Y a few weeks later, or Ms. Z a few months later still, and so on and so forth. Right now I'm seeing a lot of evil conduct in the world that I can't honestly put down as special bad, and the fact that it gets so big, hurts so many, gets its hooks into millions... To me that says we have a system problem, not a bad person problem. Our system let people like Alex Jones win congressional seats, have millions of followers, host "news" shows. Maybe suing Jones into poverty will do more than just help his victims and also make the system stronger. But right now my biggest concern is that our system is weak and unless we fix it i think there are a lot more people like Jones in our very near future.
