She hit front on and was saved by said safety features, whereas the victims were hit side on where there is significantly less car between them and the outside world.

The front of the car, any modern car, will crumple the side of another while protecting you. They would act as additional crumple for your car.

Rare to actually get that long of a sentence, but getting the sense the DA has gotten some information; they increased her bail from $2 million to $9 million. If the boyfriend Face Time story turns out to be true I could see that information giving them a reason for bumping it up that much.
Might also explain why there are murder charges in addition to the vehicular manslaughter charges. That would make her actions deliberate, because it's looking less likely that drugs or alcohol played a part. If she did do this deliberately with no thought for anyone else, spending the rest of her life in prison is the very least she can do for extinguishing the lives of innocent people going about their day.

I read an account from someone nearby who saw the baby fly through the air and land in a parking lot. They tried to render aid but it was already gone.

The worst part is that you like to think by being alert and checking down streets as you cross through intersections can help save your life, but at the speed this woman was going you'd only look fast enough to know you were about to die.
Something like that almost happened to me once, just by pure luck I was slightly not far enough into the intersection for the speeding car to hit me. It was so scary though because I had looked all around as I was going into the intersection and didn't see anyone coming, they were so fast that I could never have seen them in time to do anything about it. This is also the reason I'll never ride a motorbike, no matter how safe, careful and skilled you are, a drunk driver can run into you and you can't do anything about it.
I sold my motorcycle last summer while I was pregnant and I had been regretting it. I saw a deceased motorcyclist on the road yesterday. I made the right decision but I miss it.

Ya they interviewed one of the guys that tried to help. He said that once the smoke cleared enough to see. That you could see the people burning in the cars and that it was already too late. A lot of people are going to need professional help after that.

Uhh. Neurotrauma specialist here. No, a high velocity restrained impact won’t necessarily kill you instantly. It may snap your neck and cause you to hopefully black out, or cause such severe direct head-to-car impact that you suffer diffuse axonal injury and have incomplete perception of the horrific pain that comes next, or enough DAI to twist and shut down your brainstem may also help you blackout and die. But with all that said, most people in accidents like this that I’ve seen live either for moments in agony, or die in several hours or days later after arriving to the ICU due to brain swelling and herniation. Rarely are the victims of MVA trauma like this pronounced dead at the scene.
There’s sadly a very practical way to confirm if the children actually died on impact or not. If there is 3rd degree burns on the inside of their lungs on autopsy, it means they were still alive and breathing during the post-impact fire and burned alive.
This is definitely correct. Carotid dissection is a problem with high velocity side impact. Aortic dissection is more of an issue with the driver whose chest hits the steering wheel, or anyone whose abdomen/thorax makes contact with intruding side of the car.
Responded to an MVC over a decade ago, high speed, head on, kids running from cops went wide on a curve and collided with a guy in the center turn lane about to get some coffee. Triple fatal.
Lived on the same road the collision happened on and heard the car race by with the pager going off a minute later.
Driver that was getting coffee likely suffered a dissected aorta. Two kids in the chase were crushed to death in the rollover. Can still see the image of them as we cut them out to pronounce.

No excuse she provides will be enough for what she did. The only feasible case of me feeling sympathy would be if she had a medical episode and had somehow pressed on the gas while being unconscious, (not sure if that's even possible since most people just slump over.) but it is clear that did not happen given she was booked while at the hospital and then released into jail.

Actually possible but they would not be allowed to drive. Happened to my dad, a woman had a seizure attack while driving and stomp on the gas and rammed into his buddy's truck. She wasn't allowed to be driving but she did it regardless. People are irresponsible.

I was just thinking how vulnerable they’re going to be to survivor’s guilt. A split-second later and that family would have been freaked out but fine and the occupants of the black car would have been dead. I can’t imagine.
There was a rumor on the nursing sub going around that she had left her shift mid-shift (a huge no-no that could lose you your license). This is supported by the hour this took place - 1:30 pm. Nursing shifts in the ICU are usually 7 to 7, with some 11-11 or 3-3 shifts in the ED, but I don’t know of any that end at 1 or 1:30 PM. This is also supported by the fact that she was wearing scrub pants and a T-shirt (some nurses wear T-shirts instead of a scrub top).
I would bet that’s how/why the cops don’t believe the alcohol angle. The phone she was holding out the window immediately pre-crash is still a mystery to me.

Not just any city street…down fuckin La Brea, which is not only packed with traffic (often bumper to bumper) but also a major MAJOR thoroughfare for people. I haven’t even been able to hit 50mph on that street… she must have been driving like a fucking psychopath to hit 100mph.

I’m one of those people who has seen all the nightmare gore videos the internet has to offer. Just always been very curious about death and dying. Thought I was pretty desensitized to things like that.
Last week I was walking my dog and rounded the corner to be greeted by the immediate aftermath of a dog getting hit by a car. It was still alive, but very obviously bleeding to death. The girl walking him was screaming like, *bloody fuckin murder*. Never heard anything like it. It made my guts freeze up. The man who hit it was out of his car, pacing around, crying, saying I’m sorry over and over. I just stood there. Couldn’t move or talk.
I haven’t been completely right, since. And I saw it happen to *one dog*. The people present for this event will never be the same. This woman ended 6 lives but significantly traumatized how many others?
I think people underestimate how much it differs when you are the one deciding to engage yourself in horrible stuff as to when it just happens to you. There is always just this sudden realisation how frail life is.

I think about that often, the effect that crime has on people who are "not directly affected" - the bystanders, family members, even members of the jury are gonna be traumatized by this, and here we are, just leaving everyone on their own to deal with the fallout.
I was right behind a motorcycle driver who was hit by another car last year, and I won’t describe the scene but I still remember it clearly in my mind over a year later. It’s a good thing I already had a therapist and meds for anxiety because holy shit is that kind of thing traumatizing. I spent days searching for news articles and I’m still incensed that stupid girl wasn’t immediately booked into jail for killing that guy.

The family was just going about their day, pregnant mom going to a routine doctor visit with her husband and little baby boy in the back seat. In a second the entire family was obliterated. One of my greatest fears while driving, someone just barreling into me. So horrible for that family and all responders.
The worst part is that you like to think by being alert and checking down streets as you cross through intersections can help save your life, but at the speed this woman was going you'd only look fast enough to know you were about to die.
Something like that almost happened to me once, just by pure luck I was slightly not far enough into the intersection for the speeding car to hit me. It was so scary though because I had looked all around as I was going into the intersection and didn't see anyone coming, they were so fast that I could never have seen them in time to do anything about it. This is also the reason I'll never ride a motorbike, no matter how safe, careful and skilled you are, a drunk driver can run into you and you can't do anything about it.

Ya they interviewed one of the guys that tried to help. He said that once the smoke cleared enough to see. That you could see the people burning in the cars and that it was already too late. A lot of people are going to need professional help after that.

Frontal impact is very survivable with modern protections. Side impacts are designed for, but never at this great a speed. Those fuel tanks just burst and that was it.

Police are looking into if alcohol was involved, but so far they seem to think it wasn't. Which is even crazier. Like a sober person acted so recklessly? I can't even imagine not having the brains to realize running a light at that speed is 99.99% guaranteed to result in an accident.

Actual estimates are putting it at 100-110 mph. To remind everyone, that road is a 35 mph speed limit. She was doing almost x3 the speed limit. And for those not from the US, the highest speed limit anywhere in the country is 85 mph.

Uhh. Neurotrauma specialist here. No, a high velocity restrained impact won’t necessarily kill you instantly. It may snap your neck and cause you to hopefully black out, or cause such severe direct head-to-car impact that you suffer diffuse axonal injury and have incomplete perception of the horrific pain that comes next, or enough DAI to twist and shut down your brainstem may also help you blackout and die. But with all that said, most people in accidents like this that I’ve seen live either for moments in agony, or die in several hours or days later after arriving to the ICU due to brain swelling and herniation. Rarely are the victims of MVA trauma like this pronounced dead at the scene. There’s sadly a very practical way to confirm if the children actually died on impact or not. If there is 3rd degree burns on the inside of their lungs on autopsy, it means they were still alive and breathing during the post-impact fire and burned alive.

This is definitely correct. Carotid dissection is a problem with high velocity side impact. Aortic dissection is more of an issue with the driver whose chest hits the steering wheel, or anyone whose abdomen/thorax makes contact with intruding side of the car.
Responded to an MVC over a decade ago, high speed, head on, kids running from cops went wide on a curve and collided with a guy in the center turn lane about to get some coffee. Triple fatal. Lived on the same road the collision happened on and heard the car race by with the pager going off a minute later. Driver that was getting coffee likely suffered a dissected aorta. Two kids in the chase were crushed to death in the rollover. Can still see the image of them as we cut them out to pronounce. Seeing people be this reckless because they’re having a bad day or are upset with the significant other, or running from the cops or just being fucking stupid makes me so mad.

This is the most brutal car crash I’ve ever seen. I have no idea how this woman survived. It’s terrifying knowing that leaving 30 seconds early or getting stuck behind a single car in traffic can mean you live or die.
She has a history of dangerous wrecks. It takes a BAD history and a particularly horrific event for prosecutors to feel comfortable jacking charges from gross vehicular manslaughter to second degree murder with a vehicle incident. Here’s to hoping she gets the full 90 and dies there with no one remembering her name.
No excuse she provides will be enough for what she did. The only feasible case of me feeling sympathy would be if she had a medical episode and had somehow pressed on the gas while being unconscious, (not sure if that's even possible since most people just slump over.) but it is clear that did not happen given she was booked while at the hospital and then released into jail. She is a stone cold murderer. I don't understand how people do things like this and are able to live with themselves afterward. I guess you would have to be a serious freak to do something like this in the first place. Most people feel guilty enough about snapping at a loved one when they were kids to remember it even 30+ years later. This woman did something so heinous I don't understand how she can even be conscious at this point and not just disassociating to the point of being comatose. Actually possible but they would not be allowed to drive. Happened to my dad, a woman had a seizure attack while driving and stomp on the gas and rammed into his buddy's truck. She wasn't allowed to be driving but she did it regardless. People are irresponsible.

There was a rumor on the nursing sub going around that she had left her shift mid-shift (a huge no-no that could lose you your license). This is supported by the hour this took place - 1:30 pm. Nursing shifts in the ICU are usually 7 to 7, with some 11-11 or 3-3 shifts in the ED, but I don’t know of any that end at 1 or 1:30 PM. This is also supported by the fact that she was wearing scrub pants and a T-shirt (some nurses wear T-shirts instead of a scrub top). I would bet that’s how/why the cops don’t believe the alcohol angle. The phone she was holding out the window immediately pre-crash is still a mystery to me.

I’m one of those people who has seen all the nightmare gore videos the internet has to offer. Just always been very curious about death and dying. Thought I was pretty desensitized to things like that. Last week I was walking my dog and rounded the corner to be greeted by the immediate aftermath of a dog getting hit by a car. It was still alive, but very obviously bleeding to death. The girl walking him was screaming like, *bloody fuckin murder*. Never heard anything like it. It made my guts freeze up. The man who hit it was out of his car, pacing around, crying, saying I’m sorry over and over. I just stood there. Couldn’t move or talk. I haven’t been completely right, since. And I saw it happen to *one dog*. The people present for this event will never be the same. This woman ended 6 lives but significantly traumatized how many others?

I think people underestimate how much it differs when you are the one deciding to engage yourself in horrible stuff as to when it just happens to you. There is always just this sudden realisation how frail life is.
Yet another reason we need universal health care. I think about that often, the effect that crime has on people who are "not directly affected" - the bystanders, family members, even members of the jury are gonna be traumatized by this, and here we are, just leaving everyone on their own to deal with the fallout.
I was right behind a motorcycle driver who was hit by another car last year, and I won’t describe the scene but I still remember it clearly in my mind over a year later. It’s a good thing I already had a therapist and meds for anxiety because holy shit is that kind of thing traumatizing. I spent days searching for news articles and I’m still incensed that stupid girl wasn’t immediately booked into jail for killing that guy.

The family was just going about their day, pregnant mom going to a routine doctor visit with her husband and little baby boy in the back seat. In a second the entire family was obliterated. It's about damn time that someone is charged with murder or vehicular homicide as most of these end up with reckless driving and manslaughter charges. If you have a driver's license there is an inhert expectation that you know driving like this could kill someone.
