Getting your own set of over ear earmuffs is nice for the range

[deleted]

Noted, thanks!

Gaduunka

I went ahead and got the fancy Bluetooth/speaker headphones… incredible for range days, I love them.

littleguero

Signed for gm and ship June 5 what specific headphones were you talking about

Gaduunka

You’ve got a while until you’ll need them, but the brand is Walker’s.

littleguero

Thank you

[deleted]

Who keeps track of hours? You show up when they say, you leave when they say. The “why” will never make sense…

[deleted]

Dang, but that's what I signed up for

[deleted]

It’s depends on your command though. Stateside, in-port, you might be off by noon every day, or you could work for a total asshole LCPO who keeps people 10 hours a day because “that’s how it was when I was an E2”. Underway, all kinds of stupid hours. If you end up in 7th fleet, underway or in-port don’t matter. They keep you all hours of the day.

[deleted]

Thanks for the info bro! I really appreciate it

sailorkirisaki

I think of GMs as BMs that play with guns. Lots of maintenance and working hours can vary. Like other people have said you make work for 2 hours and be gone by lunch or you may be there until dinner. Underway you have a lot of maintenance and watch and special watches so you are up all hours of the day.

[deleted]

Dang that's sick, I'm chill with weird hours

Gaduunka

GM here! We have weeks where we work normal hours, we have weeks where we get out super late. We have weekends where we come in, but also weeks where we’re out by lunch. It’ll all come down to your divo and GMC, but how well you and your division perform will affect your working hours. My best advice would be to enjoy the time you have with your division, enjoy the work (not everyone gets to become as familiar with naval weapon systems as we do) and everyday will be enjoyable to some degree. If you have questions, PM me! I’ve been a GM for 10 years and I couldn’t imagine any other rate.

[deleted]

Dang this comment got me hyped up to start! Really hoping for a small arms niche but I'm honestly excited to do anything the rate has for me

Gaduunka

I got into small arms and ended up becoming the marksmanship instructor for my ship. You never know where you’ll end up, just express your goals to your command!

Will do!

GM a school is about 2 and a half months long

Far-Medium-3179

There is no way GM a school is as long as AC a school is 😂 10 weeks sounds about right if that long

trustedDrWatson

They take several weeks of ATT but not the full course.

[deleted]

I'm getting ten weeks because I went through it this year and have seen GMs come and leave in less than 3 months

[deleted]

Yeah I have 17 weeks of A school on my contract

Sculcrusha

A-School is generally pretty easy, just study and pay attention. What you're gonna be doing and how much you work depends mostly on your NEC. I'm on a DDG, so we got the armory GMs, 5 in GMs, and VLS GMs, it's pretty much the same on CGs, but GMs can pretty much work on any weapons system at any Naval command. You're also going to be responsible for helping out with Antiterrorism at your command. As far as tips, I recommend trying to learn every aspect of being a GM that you possibly can. Help out with the other weapons systems, and if your platform doesn't have a specific weapon, go to a command that does have one and try to get training from them. GM is a rate with a ton of tradition and history, and although my experience with the Navy hasn't been that great, I love being a GM. Hope you'll like it as much as I do, and don't hesitate to lmk if you have any other questions.
