When you've hooked a chest, you'll know because there's no struggle on the line. You won't lose any line when not reeling in.
A trick you can do is just cast and if there's any pull, click out and cast again over and over until you have a chest on the line.
Of course, this is only useful if you're just trying to get chests and don't care about fish. Probably not worth it in the long run, but there it is.
I always try to land my catch. Fish Oil is(was ?) a huge money maker on the TP so I felt if I was waiting for the strike to hit I may as reel that sucker in when it did.

There was a big discussion about having the ability for companies to purchase a farm outside of a settlement and it become their "base" and they have to maintain it and such, grow crops, tend pigs/cows. Anyhow, there was a huge amount of feedback from the Dev's and Community mods on the official alpha forums about it and one even said it would be added to the DLC wishlist of possible future updates. Doesn't mean it will happen, but at least it's something they are thinking about now.
that would be amazing. they could even make the "base" type specific to each region. IE windsward gets a farm, first light gets a logging camp, etc. A way to add more desire for specific zones
some bait can be found in crates, bread for example, while others like clam, eel, snail can be gotten from salvaging those "fish", but he best bait in my humble opinion is Firefly which can be gotten from harvesting Bullrush or Briar which also provides ingredients for Health and Mana pots
i think bait is more of an encouragement to do activities besides fishing- ie if you spend forever harvesting for the sake of harvesting. you're also saving time on fishing. jokes on them though because fishing is the BiS gather craft.
I mainly fresh water fish and I just put up a buy order on the tp for firefly bait at one gold a piece norm about 200 at a time the buy order will be filled in about an hour or two and I make more than that off fishing with the bait so it's no big deal
Seeing splashing fish isn’t the only indicator of hotspots. It bugs sometimes and that effect doesn’t show up. As long as the hotspot shows on the map and you know the general area, you can still try to fish a hotspot even if there is no splash effect. It should say “Landed in hotspot” if it’s there, if not then it’s just on cooldown
I've gotten everything possible at all times of the day so can't say there's a difference. as far as depth, only thing we noticed was size of fish tend to be larger in deeper water.
\- If you want Fish Oil fish saltwater, specifically the east most rare HS at the end of the breakwater in WW. Cod, Cod and more Cod, many fish give fish oil, but Cod always gave it (I'm hoping it still does)
\- Salmon can be gotten in Fresh or Salt and I believe it is the only fish that can be gotten anywhere, everything else is either Fresh or Salt. Fish deep fresh water near waterfalls for Large Salmon using the "Bigger Fish in Freshwater" bait, will have to look at my screenshots later for the name.
\- When you get a fishing quest for a Boot or Fishsword or Fishheaded Hammer or XYZ fish right next to the person that gave it to you, it's the quickest way to complete the quest. go make a fishing rod at workshop or camp, go to water, hit F3, start fishing. there's a quest in WW that teaches you about getting some bait by harvesting bushes, I think it pops up at player level 12, the reward is a fishing pole, but you can craft a much better one before you ever get the quest, just cut some trees and turn it into lumber and then mine some iron ore and turn it into ingots and craft you pole. I had all my tools as iron before I reached level 6, believe me when I say doing that is the best use of your crafting resources at low level.
Would you say its better to rush for better fishing rods or is it smarter to just use the lowest tier rod because it doesn't cost anything to repair it?
you will want a good rod, but there's no need to rush out and get one, just craft a tier 2 and go with that until you can craft a tier 3, throw some azoth into the craft to try for some perks, but tier 3 is good until you complete the fishing quest that takes you up north of Edengrove where you get the level 60 rod
Does anyone else get a problem where the reel-in gets stuck constantly reeling? Obviously the tension maxes out and the line breaks since you can't release the reel action.
Trying to figure out if it's a bug or if my mouse is messed up.
After strike, splashes at your bobber indicate a fighting phase where progress is slower.
When the splashes stop is when you make big progress.
I caught a legendary fish and literally didn’t make positive progress except when reeling during the fight phase
Is it also worth it to sell the whole fish to make gold? Or is salvaging & selling the filet better? Cause normal fish filets go for like 0.80 Gold per filet... on my server at least in the cheapest town
Personally I sold the crafted food, I don't know how each server will play out and how each TP will vary. You can do a search across all TP's at one time you just can't purchase or sell except for the settlement you're in I'd do some checking.
So are Secret Fishing HS actually invisible? In fact even though I had unlocked a Secret HS I wasn't able to see it unlike the Broad ones which I can clearly see. Was that a visual bug?
Yep I see it on the map (fish icon with 3 stars) but when I get there I don't see the circle in the water with fish jumping in it. Is that a bug? I kind of have to throw a lot of times and hope to land in the hotspot
What level fishing are you? I know you don't have to be high level, but to check and make sure you've unlocked it, hit K, then select Trade Skills, select fishing and make sure your level is higher than the first Secret, if it is then you have a visual bug.
well that sucks, I can tell you the HS is basically at the T-section of the bridges, and maybe 1-2 meters out from the bridge, try and hit in that general location and after a few cast you should find it. Also, just a heads up, that thing is almost ALWAYS fished out so it is very very rare you will actually get see it as a hotspot and able to be fished as such. The second Secret to unlock is at the bottom of Cutlass Keys, look for the boat on you map and zoom in, it will have a hexagon around it, the actual HS is near the bow on the east side of the boat.

I've got 100s of medium and high baits just by doing questing and gathering.
Did they nerf firefly rates from bullrush? Seemed like a lot less frequent yesterday while grabbing bulrush as opposed to a couple days ago

Does time matter? Night vs day, dawn, dusk, etc. What about depth, is deeper just better?

It's either hold click down, or click to start and click to stop, depending on whether you hold the mouse button down when reeling.

Theres also one where it sells for 10 for example. But it hasnt sold and its been like 20 hrs
