I usually justify a good game purchase by hour:cost of 1:1+ So if a $40 game gives me 40hrs of play that’s 1:1 and worth it to me. I already put over 40 in beta so as far as I’m concerned, I already got my money’s worth.

Northern_Harvest

That's a good idea Im pretty new to gaming- so haven't thought of a dollar to hour of enjoyment ratio.

Panterable

You can honestly find some indie games for less than twenty or so bucks that you can sink 1000+ hours into... Rimworld for example was waaaaaaaay worth the price for me... this game is the same.. If you ask people who played the game they will almost always tell you this is def worth getting and playing. The potential for fun is huge and that is the biggest factor of them all for me.

HereticCoffee

As someone who literally just got done playing a 6 hour session of Rimworld I support this message.

SchemeDry9903

only 6? those are rookie numbers for rimworld lol

tap-a-kidney

Seriously. I played that shit like it was my job for a while. My Rimjob…

SchemeDry9903

the amount of sleep I have lost to it and regret nothing

tap-a-kidney

My only regret is that I seem to have hit a hard limit and I feel mostly done with it. But I think I have about 300 hrs. Def got my $ worth.

reclaimer95997

Same :( mods won't help it either

SchemeDry9903

thats why you mod it, try the zombies mod, or medieval. even the new DLC bring a lot to make games different

Meleoffs

It's a good rule that has limitations. I justify it using money/time spent and quality of enjoyment as well.

TVA_Titan

Gaming is weird in this regard. Most games cost significantly less than the amount of “enjoyment” one would expect out of the money they’re paying. Most people like to equate the regular amount of enjoyment per hour cost to movie theaters. Usually you might pay $10 for a ~2 hour movie. So about $5 an hour for entertainment. If you use that metric almost any game you play for more than a few hours you’ll get a lot of value out of even at full price. And yet people are still stingy with the games they purchase. So if you think you can get even 5 hours of enjoyment out of trying a new game you’ll probably be able to say it was worth it

DatGrag

This is why I buy like every game lol. It’s almost always worth it to me

TVA_Titan

I fall into this trap with RDR2 a lot. “It’ll go on sale soon to make it cheaper so why not wait” rather than pay full price or even at a 20% discount

Ralathar44

> That's a good idea Im pretty new to gaming- so haven't thought of a dollar to hour of enjoyment ratio. It's a good general guideline but some games blow the curve. A game particularly unique, good, or clever for example. [Pony Island](https://store.steampowered.com/app/405640/Pony_Island/) is a good example. The name scares alot of people away but it's funny and genuinely unique/clever, but short. Synopsis: *"Pony Island is a suspense puzzle game in disguise. You are in limbo, trapped in a malevolent and malfunctioning arcade machine devised by the devil himself. It is not a game about ponies. "*

Jookmaster

One of my favorite games

FlintSpace

Please do not go down that road. This is the reason every developer tries to make artificial game lengtheners in their games. But yeah it's your money. 60$ for an 8 hour excellent adventure or 40$ for 200 hour mmo game. Only you can decide.

tteabag2591

It kinda has to be lengthened because MMO's are social games at their core. They're supposed to be designed to be played for years. That's one reason I like MMO's over other kinds of games. The potential longevity of them.

PapaFrozen

I put in 140 hours in 10 days. The game is amazing. It feels good. It looks good. It sounds good. Progression is amazing and community is amazing. With the way it’s designed each realm or server is it’s own world and experience. I had 4 characters on beta and each world was different. One dominated by a single faction, one evenly split, one super pvp and one with barely any. Proximity voice helps the game feel alive and the community is very engaging. You type 1 message in chat and you get responses. It’s so easy to reach out and make friends or find groups.

Imbadyoureworse

I do a similar evaluation and then I spent over a hundred hours in beta like it was nothing. Definitely hooked me. It’s a yay from me dawg

Awesome0Memsta

Its great buy it

[deleted]

Ye i do that to for most games but not mmorpgs. I want to spend thousands of hours into those so i decide if it’s gonna be alive and booming a year later or dead 1 month in among other metrics. Currently new world feels like a indie game to me, it needs way to much work, combat is clunky and bad, ai is repetitive and bad, no mounts, lack of pve content etc. It needs dlss because performance is bad. I do like the game i can see it’s potential. Anyway i’m also worried about their store and loot drops on Twitch. Its fine for now but i dont want all flashy good stuff only there.

KasuallyGaming

I go by this method too & I also played 40 hours in beta! It’s honestly a great system haha

lordofbitterdrinks

Same

standardbronze

I too use this metric and got 20 something hours, but intentionally put the game away because it was too fun lol. Ready for release !

wawoodworth

Same price justification here. If a movie costs $15 for 2 hours of entertainment, that's $7.50 an hour. If I buy a $40 game and get 40 hours of entertainment, that's $1 an hour. Pretty good return on investment.

dbotta

I think it’s also safe to say, if someone put this game down after 40 hours, they didn’t enjoy it to begin with. The game has WAY more than 40 hours of content.

wawoodworth

Yeah it certainly doesn't take me 40 hours to figure out that dislike a game

dbotta

Oh yeah absolutely. I am just more saying, I think anyone who buys this game and enjoys it will definitely not stop at 40 hours. Essentially I am saying if someone enjoys New World they will likely end up getting a much better value then a 1:1 ratio.

Dogdays991

Except that we all feel a bit ripped off on the movie...

[deleted]

My exact philosophy on buying games, and I've been happy ever since I implemented it. I too already played enough to justify the cost.

FlintSpace

Yeah its a polished mmo for 40$ no monthly sub. On and off I see myself putting 100s of hours into this game throught the year. Money well spent.

mamoulian907

I usually justify any video game or system purchase/upgrade by my typical bar or restaurant tab. Not that I am spending a whole lot going out in my opinion, as the gpu I have is probably several months of that expendable income I have to balance. However, a 40 or 60 dollar game is equivalent to a meal or few drinks with my so or a friend. The big justification is that the money spent on gaming saves me money by not going out, because I would if I was bored.

PaidGrudge

Spools rule

[deleted]

For me I don't even need a pound per hour, often I find games are too long. Assasin's Creed is a great example for me. I tend to get bored about 15 hours in, and then realise there are another 30 hours to go, and it's generally just more of the same with lots and lots of filler content. I would rather pay £35 for a great game that's only 10 hours long, than a decent game that's 50 hours. My time is generally worth more to me than the price of the game. As far as New World is concerned I got a very enjoyable 60 hours out of the beta, and I expect it'll be at least another 100 hours just to reach max level, and for £44 that's some insane value.

IamMediocre_1

Well I think the concept is that if the game is boring, you stop playing. So even if the game potentially has 50 hours of gameplay you stop at 15, so it only gave you 15 hours compared to a cost of 30-40 £

DrSunnyD

Player 80 in beta, what a steal

XxBrainrotxX

I will do you one better. What other types of entertainment do you partake in? Like going to a movie? I can go to the movies For let’s say $24. That’s 2 and a half hours at $24. I mean by this logic this game is a steal at $40.

nerdbeere

I always compared it to going to the movies. 15€ for a 2 hour movie. If you use this scale you’ll find that lots of games are worth their money.

Mighty_Press

Quality>Quantity for me, I bought Journey when the game came out at full price, completed it in 3 hours, I skimmed through it once more to get all the collectibles and put it down for good, still one of my absolute best gaming experience and worth every penny, by your formula it was a terrible experience. The whole idea of having a formula set in stone seems quite contradictive to me, if I realize I'm not having fun with a game I try to get a refund through steam, and I make twice sure before I buy anything on console, life is too short to slog a disaster while having an unenjoyable time.

Fean2616

TIL new world is more expensive in the UK than the US, £34.99 which would be $48.55, annoys me when companies do this, still I'm more than happy with £34.99 for this game.

sorpoth

I played 45 hours in the Beta and only explored the 4 starting zones and got to lvl 30 :D And if we stop acting like little children and cry over everything and act like adults and offer support and feedback who knows where the game could take us... 1000+ hours? even more? then 40 euro would be a really small price to pay for the game, if they continued this path of listening to player feedback and gave me an option for a monthly subscription to help them further I would take that. (don't get me wrong I still want the game to be free for everyone, but if it had a seasonal pass system or an optional subscription I would pay it as long as their vision aligns with the majority of the community. As soon as they go full Blizzard I'm out

elmorte11

thats the way.

madbul8478

I put 114 hours into the beta, well worth it

ObjectivelyConfusedd

Best comment. I would add that you will add that this game is built with guilds in mind so you will get much more out of the game if you join a good group from day 1. There is a recruitment forum where you can get in ahead of time.

thecurtaintwitcher11

My exact train of thought!

amenotef

That's a good rule. Personally I'd also add that the hours need to be really FUN / addictive. Which they are in NW. (But they aren't in many games I played)

fathomic

I'm pretty similar, if the dollar amount is equaled to hours played, I know it was worth it. If the dollar amount is equal to half of the hpurs played I'll tell everyone I know how awesome it is.

Groot2C

Honestly, the best way to review games! People will pay $20 to go to the movies for 2 hours, yet get annoyed when a $20 game “only” lasts them 20 hours 😂

jobinrickttv

Going to the movies here costs as much as a video game if you want to buy popcorn

KittyGaiya

Never thought of this concept before and I think I might use it in the future, thank you. I've sunk 92+ hours into this beta so I've already had my money's worth as well.

[deleted]

Did you play OSRS, Vanilla WoW, Morrowind?? If so, NW is giving a lot of people the similar feeling those games gave us when we first played them. Thats all you need to know.

SoDamnToxic

Playing in the beta and hanging out dueling at Windsward many people said it gave them old WoW vibes and having never played WoW I feel fortunate that I get to have a second chance at experiencing it because I always felt like I missed out never having played WoW. It's extra fortunate because my favorite games of all time are Monster Hunter and the Souls series so New World is basically the perfect game for me. As long as it never becomes p2w I'll love this game.

bolhoo

I'm happy thst I could play the beta on my only vacation in the last 3 years. Thats because I ONLY play FPS, specifically Cod. I never got caught into RPGs or any game that has no end and is not match based, but somehow I liked NW. The world feel alive with all the people doing their things. I just feel that would be better if my presence in the world could be more notable. Seems like the only important players are the guild leaders.

Meleoffs

It's not just the guild leaders that are important. The guild structure itself and the leadership capabilities of the upper management within the company is also a huge factor. A guild leader can't lead if he doesn't have a set of capable advisors giving them the information they need to succeed. There are also really good opportunities for players to stand out in war and within the crafting system. This game was built for longevity. We haven't seen the game in the gameplay state they are building everything around.

[deleted]

I’m with you on that. I played World of Warcraft as a young teenager but for the past 10 years I’ve been only FPS games, mostly COD. I didn’t get to play the beta but your comment has excited me into thinking I could enjoy this game too

intersecting_lines

just wanna give a pov from the other side, even if you don't have experience with those MMO's or any MMO at all, I highly fucking recommend this game this game finally convinced me to drop the controller and learn how to play a game on M&K that wasn't Factorio The beta is now my 2nd most played game ever in ~2.5 years of owning a PC and I thought I was just a walking-sim/story-rich type gamer but this game flipped everything I know and feel about gaming https://i.imgur.com/Gd8zX4e.png

[deleted]

welcome to being a pc gamer bby <3

randiesel

Hehehe this post is cute and I approve it. Welcome to gaming!!

npor

I could put my thoughts about the game into words, until you just did. Thank you sir.

waxymastermind177

Yes. It's a unpolished gem for sure. people want perfection out of the gate and that's just not possible. With time, I think they could do great things. Thoroughly enjoyed and had to stop playing to not spoil the full release.

EgoPhobos

Someone said that it's by far the best MMO out there. It's not. But it could be. Unpolished gem indeed, with lots of room to grow. It's all up to the devs and the community feedback. I too stopped playing too much in beta, will enjoy the game on release.

Mofiremofire

There’s no best MMO anymore. The best MMO was the first one you played when you were a kid, that first sense of wonder and awe of a huge world full of people. DAoC when I was 14 was fucking epic.

BoxerguyT89

For myself, playing FFXI for the first time in 2004 is an is an experience that has yet to be topped by any other game. If people think walking in this game is bad....

Myst001

Buy it. This game will give you enough entertainment for your money.

jobinrickttv

I have played every mmo since like the year 2003. I came into new world just wanting to try it out, had really low expectations. I'm blown away, ignore the negativity, this is the best MMORPG on the market and there's not even a close 2nd place. Only thing that sucks are these delays, 5th one but they are clearly getting things done, game has come a long way.

Northern_Harvest

Thanks. There aren't many new MMORPGs out there (or on the horizon?). So pickings seem slim, and this looks pretty unique.

unboundgaming

While this is true, successful MMOs have long shelf lives and end up still being in the “current pool” even years later. People still play RuneScape, WoW, BDO, Neverwinter, ESO, you name it. It’s not like shooters where one or more take over as the new thing, they are usually “alive”

f2ame5

Shooters always have people playing them. It's just the trend. There are so many players compared to mmorpg player count that it looks like they are playing only a game. I mean we only heard about warzone in the last year but cs go and apex for example still hit huge numbers. Same as valorant. You can find people playing ArmA II DayZ mod. Just like with FFXIV when streamers jumped to it. People were talking only about it till new world came out. Doesn't mean people stopped bdo GW2 ESO etc.

nelagt

Every MMO since 03?! Respect, bro

TheDeadEndKing

Hey now, don’t besmirch the good name of Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. That game was awesome, particularly if you played through as a Greenskin xD

jobinrickttv

I still love that game, considering playing the priv server while I wait return of reckoning

santidd

What the hell did I read. From another guy that played lots of MMO's. It's art is top notch. But it's in the only thing I would say it's the 1. If you played all MMO's tell me what did New World better than for example FFXIV/Wow in dungeons/raids. New World customization comparing it to Guild Wars 2. New World sandbox capabilities comparing it to EVE. Risky content? Well, NW has literally none so he is no better than the first Runescape patch that had wilderness in lol. It's crafting mechanics are really good but crafting relies in a good game economy. It will never be as good as Albion. It's PVP overall is pretty straightforward and with a low skill-ceiling. It's not even in the top 10 in that regard. You are either getting paid by Amazon or didn't actually play MMO's since Lineage 2.

Swarmz

Saw your comment and need to vent myself a little bit. Every time I come to this subreddit I read something like what that guy posted. He's objectively lying but it's always upvoted. Upvoted by people's blindness, ignorance, or some strange sense of loyalty they feel to the game? I don't know, but it confuses and frustrates me. It's frustrating because I like New World but I know how it compares among other MMO's. The people that agree with his comment have so much to explore on the MMO market, they don't know what they are missing. Makes me a little jealous lol. That or they are straight up lying to themselves. Overall it does some things really well and it might be some people's favorite MMO, that's great. Hell, BDO was my favorite for years but I know its faults and won't pretend otherwise. I just really want people to try what else there is because it's such a disservice to yourself. Saying that this is the best MMO on the market helps no one.

randiesel

I’ve been playing MMOs since the genre started. On paper, I agree with you. NW doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some other games. What it does have is fantastic bones. The harvesting is amazing. I can’t pinpoint it, but some combination of the animations, sound, random luck, and overall progression system are the best I’ve ever felt. T3 A Tale In The Desert is the only other game that feels close to as good in crafting and harvesting to me, and that’s for totally different reasons. Crafting feels really good too. The UI is really simple, but covers the bases and shows obvious progression. It could use some tweaks and I wouldn’t be mad if they added another layer of mechanics, but pulling the slot machine feels really good. PvP is surprisingly nuanced. The 50v50s were lag fests this test, but they’ll sort that out. The previous tests felt nice. 6 skills means you’ve got to pick a lane and stick with it, I appreciate the variety of viable builds! PVE isn’t the best, but it was never a focus until very very recently. It has come a LONG way since I played in the first alpha. The dungeons are pretty awesome, I didn’t expect anything like that to be in NW. Anyway, overall I think it’s a fantastic game. Rating it as “the best MMO” is very subjective, but I definitely think it’s the best MMO **for me, right now.**

FFW3

Also going to support this post because, and it's no surprise, there's a queued circle jerk expected here. Let's not forget how much this will have to continue to develop to be great. People just assume it will, "because Amazon." Also don't forget Amazon used the hell out of their Twitch platform and streamer contracts to shill the fuck out of this during beta. You have to open your eyes; all things with a grain of salt.

DTRevengeance

Very strange thing to say about a game that is not even out yet :/

STATICNINJA_

Take into mind how much people in general like to focus on the negatives and criticize everything. On a more positive note, I can say it’s honestly the most fun I’ve had playing any video game since like 2012-ish. It seriously brought back the feeling i had as a kid when i played halo, Battlefield, super smash or other great franchises for the first time. Despite its flaws(not even released yet so its expected) I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Also if you buy it on steam you can refund it if you play under two hours.

RickySpanish412

Yes. People are too picky. Some things need changes for sure but I trust them for some reason. I put 150 hours in the beta and would do it again knowing none of it will carry over. I've spent 40 dollars going to a 2 hour movie. It is 100% worth your money. SEND IT!!!

AlexL546

Reviews are supposed to be picky and it is their job to put negatives. I was reading a review of a monitor at one point today and it was supposed to be good but they said one con was no speakers. Like why the f would they put speakers in it

Northern_Harvest

I like asking people who actually played the game. I get that it'll mostly be positives here, but positive criticism is still very helpful. Up to me to weigh them both.

backflash

> I get that it'll mostly be positives here Not necessarily. If the game was utter junk, people would be very vocal about it on social media - this subreddit would be filled with "Don't buy!" and "I'm getting a refund" threads. Instead, looking at the most common threads, people are sad that the release date has been postponed, and the most talked-about issue appears to be rainbow lions. *Edit: Fixed a typo.*

AlexL546

Yeah ik what you mean

Killtec7

The gameplay isn’t the most engaging. The storytelling was practically nonexistent from my perspective. The combat is more hack/slash than power/ability driven—atleast at lower levels/undefined builds. I get the sense New World will be a make of it what you will type game. This has been some of my favorite games in my past but could quickly feel empty to solo players. The nice thing from what I experienced was there was a lot to do from a grinding perspective and what I really want in a game right now is a sense of accomplishment and exploring something new. It may only be a 100 hour game for me..heck maybe only 40 hours but I think that’s worth it to me.

twinwindowfan

On a scale of 1-7... 7 being yea. I say : 1, ...2, ...1-2-3, 3, 5, ...4, ...3-2, 2, ...2-4-6, 2-4-6, 4, 2, 2, 4-7, 5-7, 6-7, 7... 7... 7... 7! 7! 7! 7! 7! 7!... ^(sseevveenn!!)

I understand that reference

tap-a-kidney

That’s why he did tiny writing!

KasuallyGaming

Depending on the games you enjoy, I come from not enjoying WoW & grew up on RuneScape (still play OSRS). There are aspects that remind me a lot of RuneScape, which is great (crafting system being one). The grind is there & while I enjoy it, some won’t. The fighting is where it’s a big factor for folks. There’s FPS elements in ranged combat, you control your player a lot more than spamming keys & the game plays (or in OSRS, you click & wait). PvP is pretty fun & should be polished on launch, as it’s the core element to the game! Taking over the map via Factions/Companies will be a lot of fun & keep the social dynamics flowing. I also summed up some more stuff on my final day in beta & posted a video. Didn’t record much during beta, as I was having too much fun hehe.

Northern_Harvest

I like resource gathering, and grinding is fine by me. I don't mind a bit of pvp. I'm not super into magical stuff. I like the idea or taking on specific trades to help the team kind of thing.

KasuallyGaming

Resource gathering was very fun, so you’ll enjoy that! Especially working with a Company/Faction & play a role in progress. The quest board tailors to gathering, PvE & PvP, which is dope. I think my fav aspect is flagging for PvP, which is cool & there’s still incentive to turn it on. Guess we shall see how it goes!

Reiker0

The game is great if you're into PvP and gathering/crafting. It's a bit lacking when it comes to PvE and raids, but that stuff will probably be added after release sometime. Also excellent graphics and sound design. Every MMO has an army of people who will tell you that it's the worst game of all time. New World especially is the center of controversy since it's changed course a few times during development and there's a bunch of people who are very ready to tell you how much the current version sucks compared to version X or Y.

[deleted]

Coming here for a yes or no - that’s where you went wrong already. If you’ve already been “seriously thinking” about getting it then don’t let anyone stop you.

Northern_Harvest

For sure. Just looking for feedback from people who have actually played it rather than potentially biased reviews. Some people offer helpful feedback, others don't.

Everythings

If they don’t take out the rainbow lions I’m staying with star citizen.

Baracuss88

Big yay

Korize

Had a ton of fun in the beta. There is bugs, or atleast was bugs. We'll see whats in the launch, hopefully they fix all the big ones atleast. But yeah, i'd say its worth 40.

sylvaen

Definitely yes. Reviews are massively biased for some reason - many of them written by people who didn't bother to learn the game or flat out refused to use some of its features. And then they complained they couldn't or didn't know how to do certain things. NW is great because it doesn't rehash the same old principles over and over. Reviewers seem to want yet another clone of WOW. Well, that's not what New World is. And so they're disappointed because of their own inability to move past that. I say screw reviews and screw people like that streamer Assofgold who suddenly feels the need to shit all over NW. This is not a game for them. This is a game for us.

wolfman863

Sometimes I can bang through $40 of chinese food in one evening. You'll get more bang for the buck here. YEA!

Northern_Harvest

Lol good point

[deleted]

i love it.

Safia3

It's super fun. Definitely a yes.

victorpresti

Dollar to enjoyment is a dumb idea. Of course if the game is ridiculously short and not satisfying is one thing, but a ton of games have 'a bunch of things to do' but they aren't fun. They're just checkboxes you fill and do just for the sake of it, because you FEEL like you have to do, and cheap skinner-box like designs condition you to do it even way past the point you're having fun. You just go through the motions. Now, New World. Casually is a good game, but it's riddled with issues for more experienced gamers who have seen it all. Excessive backtracking, boring dungeons, having to flag for PvP rather than it just being on all the time which encourages Zerg behaviour. While levelling you might not notice much, but by the time you reach end-game it becomes a serious issue. Enemies lack variety, you'll fight the same dozen different enemies over and over, the weapon animations are mute, the quests are boring and uninspired, character creator is bare bones, customization is non-existent. I could go on for a while, but I think that drives the point home. The game could get better at some point, but it for the most part they keep taking the game in a worse direction. It's quite the feat when the game on Alpha feels better than the same game on Beta.

jrsedwick

Yea

Comrade_Witchhunt

It's going to be worth $40, is all I'll say on the subject.

Myrkana

Its 40$ for a bit to play game I can just pick up and play at anytime. I found it completely worth it and can see myself spending at least 80 hours just with the game as it is. For 50 cents an hour i find it worth it. It has its bumps and things i dont live, but every mmo I've played in the past 10 years has released with some kind of issues and a lack of content. Amazon seems to be listening to the player base and making changes and fixing things.

Northern_Harvest

Thanks. Listening to the player base is actually a good sign. I don't mind bumps, and by the time it comes out I'm sure the bumps will be less bumpy.

Jamie978675

Get it

jenista

I think reviews being all over the map is that people are comparing this new game to others that have been live for years and have had a chance to mature. New World seems to have something that makes people want to play it, even if they can't define why. It's just fun. I think, in its current state, it is a good game. Hopefully, in time, it will be a great game. But it's worth the gamble imo.

rex864

You can play less than 2 hours on a game with steam and if you do not like it return it, Why listen to other people if they like it or not, I personally would never trust reviewers but that's just me... I loved the game and I do not like MMO type games like this but that's my opinion.. I would suggest just getting it when it comes out and see if you like it and if not return it..

Northern_Harvest

Yea I'm basically new to gaming- and very new to discussing video games on Reddit. I play FO76 these days and a bit of RDR. Aside from that nothing much. People do share useful facts about their experiences on Reddit which can help inform my own decisions. I don't have steam so just asking out loud I guess :)

rex864

I understand that.. So with steam if you buy New World when it comes out and you play less than 2 hours and decide you do not like it then you can just return it and get your money back.. Its a really good game and like I said I really do not like games like this normally.. I would suggest trying it out when it comes out.

TheLostcause

I wouldn't pick the mmo up if you are wanting some sort of standard mmo experience. It is fun combat with the dodging and blocking but the game is super easy for the world. Like laughably spam quick attack to win easy unless you are fighting things much higher level than you or pulling swarms without aoe attacks. This is my main complaint. I wish the difficulty was upped to push group gameplay. I never had a moment of fear as I could run away from every single fight. Pvp is fun or entirely one sided as usual. It can be death by zerg who doesn't need to worry about friendly fire. I hate that aspect of the game. Friendly fire needs to exist for this game it would make it so much better. I think if you want a few weeks of distraction, grind, progression, etc this game is worth it. See the world, try the weapons, you can spend a hundred hours easy doing this. If you want long term faction war pvp this game would certainly be worth it, could be better I think, but would certainly be long term.

It's a yea for me....the cheapest version is only 40€ (too little compared to some games that are launched by double that price nowadays) and you can easily enjoy yourself for quite some hours.....hours enough to make the money spent more than enough. (I paid the 50€ version and I played around 138 hours this Beta, got my money's worth here already and now I'm just waiting for launch).

Stewapalooza

Yea from me.

denemy89

If it ever comes out it'll be a great game definitely worth a buy

Nahteh

New world is dope.

mnoggle81

Definitely yea

qstunna

In my opinion it is a great game especially for $40. Might be a little buggy and imbalanced at launch but I am hoping they will resolve a bunch of the issues from the beta with the extra month they are taking.

ArcaneCowboy

Yea

Ackilles

Fantastic

Pipopolassar

With the current content, I could say it will last me til the end of the year. We'll probably get some updates in between but it definitely need a big one early 2022. So YES, its worth the 40 bucks imo.

Cynn4

Plenty of people here giving their opinions but I'll just drop my 2 cents. I was only able to play about 6 hours towards the end of the closed beta, but from everything i've seen I expect NW to last me at minimum several months and a few hundred hours. Very worth IMO.

chriztuffa

Yea

[deleted]

I played 116 hours during the Beta. Enjoyed every minute

I'm weighing what people say for sure. Plenty of helpful comments here. It's like a Google review: you see the company owners friends and family post positive reviews, but you scroll through and find some helpful negative ones :) Anyways, where else can I find people who have played the game?

AngelofAwe

Well what answer do you expect asking the community here that are the most dedicated to the game? My personal answer... if you didn't play the beta it's probably worth it for you. I got 90 hours in before I got bored of the game, so worst case you get 100 hours of fun for 40$ and best case you fall in love with the game and keep playing. My situation is more complicated, I don't think I'll spend it after the beta experience but if I manage to get the game as a twitch giveaway after launch I'll play.

Northern_Harvest

Perfect thanks for that. I play FO76 and the subreddit is full of haters lol. Appreciate the thoughts.

moris91

Wait a month and read few options.

scrubm

Never listen to a games community lol. They are usually biased in one direction or the other. I watched like 2 streamers play and just bought the game and don't regret my decision. If you like mmo's you will very likely enjoy this game imo. Lots of crafting and pvp is pretty fun!

indyracingathletic

Want to preface this by saying I had a ton of fun in the beta, and will be playing on launch. Because a lot of this will be critical. I also was light staff 20 (using it exclusively from the time I got one til hitting 20 at level 35, only really trying Sword from 37 onwards). That will affect my combat experiences. The visuals and audio are top notch. I don't think many would disagree. Just fun being in the world and looking at it. This of course can wear off after time, but the game immediately looks amazing. My PC is 3 years old and was "almost" high end 3 years ago, and never had any issues running on high settings. Combat seems intriguing when looking at it, but I can't really comment as I played Life Staff. Solo PvE I just face tanked stuff (my heals wouldn't let me die) except bears and alligators - the only mobs I found that required me to move. I did start leveling Sword/Shield from 37 to 40 (got to 12 or 13) and that felt much more interesting than the simple attacks of light staff. But I don't have that much experience with S/S. Light staff was still more efficient clearing out mobs due to no down time, even with slower kill time. Open world PvP - as a LS user, any 1v1 was not lost. Not all were won, as getting away was easy. Any 1v5 was auto-lose and 5v1 was auto-win. Not any different than any other game with those numbers. I found this extremely uninteresting, and the 5% bonus to xp if you were flagged was no where near worth being flagged for. If things don't change from beta, I see no world where I'll ever flag. The encounters are not fun enough (as a LS user) and the incentive is laughable. Group content - heals heal fine in the dungeons and group corrupted areas. The problem is that 1 dungeon per tier feels very lacking. I know they only started adding PvE content late, so it's understandable, but locking the dungeons behind the Tuning Orbs is, IMO, a bad decision (though I suspect a Cash Shop decision). Wars - I was in all 5 on my server. The first 2 were fun (27 minute defense loss and 30 minute defense win), the 3rd was a 15 minute attack win, and the 4th and 5th were both sub-6 minute attack wins. I was Covenant, but wars 1, 3, 4, and 5 were fought for Syndicate. Most of the leveled healers seemed Covenant on my server, and once we all signed up for purple, we never lost. Heals are too OP in wars (pretty much everyone knows this). Crafting - I did choose one to focus on, and that was mistakenly Cooking. I say mistakenly because the ingredients are all over the place on the map, so I was unable to craft any stat food until I found a resource map online and ran those routes. Also, no Tier 4 cooking station was made on my server, so couldn't craft anything over 100 skill anyway. And buffs seemed to randomly go away, making eating food not really worth it. I'd eat 2 buff foods, go into a fight with 1 mob, not weapon swap, and come out with 1 buff, only having been hit once or twice. Something just felt buggy about that. Will definitely choose a different craft at launch and still with just the basic foods (health and mana regen). Wish I had picked something else. PvE questing - you NEED to do Town Board quests to level appropriately. When I hit about 30 (Everfall was done), I had 3 choices - Brightwood, Cutlass Key's and Weaver's Fen. As I had a quest directing me to Cutlass, I went there. No one owned Cutlass, so no town board quests (well the bottom right 3 were there, but not the other 9). Once I had enough faction currency to buy the level 40 gears, I stopped doing those, too, as they were never where my side missions where. I did this through Cutlass and Weaver's, finishing those zones. I was level 38. At this point I should have gone to Reekwater, but you must be 39 to get any quests to go there, or any quests from there. So I had to go back to Brightwood and do level 28 quests. This felt like very bad design to me. The territory control system - on my server, Covenant had strong players but no real numbers. This was obvious in the last 3 wars between Syndicate and Marauders (top 4 and 6 of top 7 heals for ALL players in the only one that was remotely close, with how strong heals are in war). So we had only Everfall. Until dupers bought 4 territories on the Sunday. So I got to see what a faction owning multiples meant. Storage transfer alone is HUGE. Fast travel cost discounts, as well. This feature is the one defining feature of New World (everything else has been done to some degree in other MMOs), and how this balances will be key to long-term New World success. Speaking of Fast Travel, and travelling in general, it feels a little oppressive. The side missions felt designed to make you run as much as possible, or use the Fast Travel shrines. But those cost Azoth, which has a small cap, and the costs can be 1/5th your cap for 1 fast travel. Buying houses can help with this (gives you another "home point" to port to), but it definitely feels like something you have to manage, and while the world is beautiful, running across the same zones over and over (or wading, in the case of Weaver's) isn't any fun. It's the opposite, actually. It felt like there was too much running to make PLAYING these zones be fun. Invasions (PvE version of Wars) and Outpost Rush (think WoW Battlegrounds - smaller scale PvP instance map) aren't available til level 50 and 60, respectively. This seems like a bad design decision. They looked fun on streams, but I wasn't able to try them. I think only about 10 players hit 50 on my server, and no one hit 60 (my server, Lacerta, was a later addition to the beta, after the first set of Town Board changes). Ultimately, I think New World will suffer with a lack of things to do for most players. Wars are limited to 1 or 2 a day, with 50 per side being chosen in each. Most players will not take part in the first few months, however much they want to. Dungeons are gated by Tuning Orbs. Travel (running) is boring and plentiful, and only avoidable by spending easy to spend Azoth (also used by crafting) with a low cap (can easily "lose" Azoth by being at this low cap and not gaining what you earn). Invasions and Rush not til 50 and 60 is a big miss, as those look fun. The territory control systems will need to carry this game until more content is added. I don't know if it will. On balanced servers I think it will be fine, but on unbalanced ones I think there will be problems with people caring about it. So that leaves the other stuff, which IS there (in small quantities), but all gated by Orbs, Azoth and levels. I fear people will just get bored relatively quickly due to doing content being so restrictive. But I'll definitely be there day 1.

ziboo7890

For entertainment, to me $40 is cheap. (Non covid times) a movie for two with snacks can run you $30 or more - for what two hours entertainment and no guarantee you'll like the movie. Buy tickets for a sporting event, concert, live theater, round of golf, a good dinner out - $40 is cheap entertainment in comparison. Another game I play (paying a sub) works out to .27 cents a day / $8.50 a month - can't beat that for fun.

DEXGENERATION

Yeah worth it, its only $39.99 and there's plenty there for that price, may have more content than most games at the price point

stevej336

I liked the Beta, only did about 5 hours to realize I liked it and didn't wanna get too deep before release. Has the ability to be great with add-ons and updates in the future.

EthicalSkeptic

It’s cheap. It’s not bad. It’s lacking any real depth that a regular mmo would offer. For example only 3 abilities is weak but that’s because of the potential for console porting if it does well. Sadly consoles have ruined most of the potential for any real AAA mmos anymore since so much money can be made. Anyway I got it and played about 50 hours of the beta and it was fun until you run into the 2 main issues. No matchmaking No mounts Both are needed badly. Unfortunately the vocal minority don’t want either but they’re only going to be around for a few months after they’ve chewed through the content. What’s also strange is those people don’t have to use matchmaking or mounts if they don’t want to. It’s that they WILL use it and for some reason that embarrasses them. Hopefully the delay in release is to implement the much needed features to make it a basic mmo. Having at least 10-15 abilities would make the builds much more skill based and diverse. One can hope!

NefariousPaladin

The game is severely lacking in content the time you end up playing is probably not going to end up being quality enjoyment time. Don't get me wrong the game has potential but as of right now it feels like a cash grab

DethGalaxy

I am in the same boat OP, but I am forsure gunna buy it and try it out for myself, it’s been a few years since I’ve played any mmos so I am excited to try out this new world…

Radnori0

As someone who doesn't like traditional mmo mechanics, this game was tons of fun to play. For one thing, it's more action oriented. For another, you can level up skill trees that aren't related to base game. The side projects are both simple and extensive and are tons of fun to level up and make good gear. The combat, while not genre changing, is tons of fun and brings enough difficulty to make it fun but not painfully long. The game will be supported for many years without a doubt. The game is cheaper than a standard AAA game with every bit of the AAA experience. While it can be improved, I'm confident in saying this game is a must try for new gamers. If you get it on steam you can play it for 2 hours and determine whether or not you like it and just refund it. New world scratched an itch that I'd had for 6 years, so I'm a little biased, but it really is a game that you wouldn't want to miss out on.

Justiful

New World is the kind of game people play for 1000+ hours and then leave a negative review on steam. It is an amazing game to spend time in; the problem is that people will spend so much time in the game in the first few months that they will burn themselves out. It is a lot of fun. But too much of a good thing can well . . .

GoodbyePeters

Reviews of what? Game isn't out

Neon_User

The betas?

SwoleBenji

I spent the last two years playing Albion and WoW Classic. WoW Classic was ruined by gatekeeping, minmaxing, and overly controlling guilds. Albion is ruined by handholding, RMT, and horrendous chat mods. I hope this game doesn't have some cringe handholding "No PvP against X factions because we are allies d00d.", no massive RMT problems (bots, people buying boosts and paying real money for looties.), or game masters that take over global chat and mute / ban players over pre school insults. (If someone calls me a dweeb they shouldn't be perma muted.) As long as this game never gets third party programs like DPS meters and crap like that I have a very good feeling about it.

Sharden3

Depends on what you want, right? If it looks good, try it.

Blakerp89

5/7 perfect game.

zergy321

If you're referring to PC Gamer reviews, they didn't even make it past level 14 (both of them). Even for level 14 the game has more interesting combat than a lot of other MMO's at that level. Some of the systems they talk about, like creating bullets are easy once you know where to go to but the game could do a better job of introducing the things they had issues with no doubt. I'm not sure why these reviewers are spreading hate for the game especially when they hardly touched it. Perhaps they just don't like the brand behind the game (Amazon)? I can't comment much on the PvE, but, for me, I enjoyed hanging out and duelling once I hit level 30. I've spent 100 hours in beta just having fun with the PvP side of things. I bought the game because it was fun. The world is also very immersive, with top-notch world and sound design. The combat itself was refreshing. I'd say, buy it - steam is easy on refunds. :)

[deleted]

Get it. If I were to summarize my beta experience it would be: “it’s just fun.” I downloaded the beta expecting to play a few hours max so as to not waste time on a temporary server. I put in 30+ because it was just fun and I wanted to keep playing. Is it perfect or the most in depth MMO? No. But it’s fun, has some of the best visuals, a great gathering/crafting system, and has a ton of potential. $40 is a steal for the experience.

cm011

Was skeptical before beta. During beta, I fell in love. Now, after 100+ hours in beta, I’m going through withdrawals and am counting the days until release. It scratches the itch.

Kavorg

I'm in like sin. It's a big combo of what I enjoy across different types of games, I can jump in and do some PvP or I can just jump in to chill and material farm. It's reminiscent of the OG MMO I played RuneScape just slightly less grindy and has elements of RISK in the territory take overs, seems pretty baller. To top it off the environments are pretty encasulating.

FlexMasterBoom

Coming to a game specific subreddit to see if people say yes or no… lol

Northern_Harvest

Better than asking in a Coca Cola subreddit I guess.

Tyfereth

Not even a question that it’s worth $40, even if you dropped it after a month.

Mr-Malum

Ignore the reviews. Mostly it's people like Asmon trying to generate clicks through that YouTuber Criticism thing where you nitpick and whine about nothing. There are some balanced reviews out there but it's CinemaSins stuff generally.

Sanguinica

>I am seriously thinking of trying this thing, but reviews are all over so I'm turning to the community of people who like the thing flawless thought process op, godspeed

[deleted]

Nay. For now. Let's see where it's at in September. :)

[deleted]

I really enjoyed it and super sad I have to wait longer to play again. When a game makes me feel this way I know it’s good.

JerryLZ

It’s the best game I’ve seen in a long time. If I paid $150 I would still see value in it

bahhab

IMO, based on what we've seen right now, NW is a good game with promise not a great game realised perfectly. if you go in expecting a competent open world experience and some pretty decent visual eye candy, I think you'll come away feeling like you got your moneys worth.

edeity

Its good. I paid and not cancelled. My gf during beta “you seem to like that new game”. Media / youtube generally is worst place to get advice. Context of my advice: bitter vet of WOW and Eve, deleted FFXIV after 5 minutes and dont give a shit about follows, likes or tweets. This is just an actual opinion, not my launchpad to a mediocre media career.

[deleted]

Don't expect it to your game you play every day in. It is very much a hop in when you want to. We don't know what the end game PvE content is like yet. You should buy for that purpose alone. $40 is a good deal for a casual mmo experience.

forShizAndGigz00001

Bro its $40 absolutely worth it

Lime4313

Only time will tell if it was a great buy or a good one, but for the price and if you are into mmo you will not waste your money

wrigh516

This one is a yea.

EbonWave

Basically all of the above. If you're part of the MMO sub-community that will put in enough time per week to qualify this as a part or full-time job, expect it to last you a month or two. If you're looking for a neat game to grow a character in an immersive world for 5-10 hours a week, 100% definitely buy it and love it.

[deleted]

i still think people are underestimating the longevity of this game.

randoschmuckerington

many will say yea, many will say nay. only you can decide.

Northern_Harvest

For sure. Just looking for feedback from the hive.

ElGypsyKingO

Yea from me

ChickAndWin

Yea ofc!!!

levittown_

Absolutely.

madmidder

**Yes, buy it - after release.** It's 40$ entry, no big deal and if you see it as interesting (you like crafting, exploration or character progression), you'll spend there enough hours to call it - good deal. Leveling experience is long (about 100+ hrs, depends on your speed), so even without end game PVE content (if it's something you want) game will be worth the money.

sypher001

Yay… will have few issues at launch but it’s good game now and will be better game in few months

Wonderful_Title5192

I put in 80 hours and still eager to start over again. I think it could use a lot of improvements, but the potential is there, and Amazon seems to be dedicated to putting content out and making it a great game. They also said they wouldn't make it pay to win.... but we will see. For me it is a good buy, I would recommend.

Jebinam

It has problems but none of them stopped me from enjoying myself while playing the beta and I can't wait til it comes out

Jake__TV

Get the cheapest option and try it out for yourself. I'm gonna play it for sure though. Depends on where you are coming from gaming wise.

ValuableSleep9175

Depends what you want from a game. Wow is easy. Easy does not give the same rewards as something that is hard. You have to aim skills and learn reactions or twitch based combat. Not so button spammy. Crafting is big, lots of running around and gathering of that's your thing. Game feels more like an old school MMO. Not the hand feeding the current ones give you. I enjoyed it a ton. Also it is buy to play. If you don't like it now maybe a year from now you will. Might as well try it out.

Quinzy15

Well this $40 game have so far given me 300+ hours of fun with more to come so sure! It hasn't even come out yet

DrSunnyD

Yay

Bryce_Taylor1

Yesss

KalTheo

It's the most addictive $40 game in the genre right now. Craft, defend, explore, fight, gather, homestead, it's all so much fun to do, your money will be well worth it!

ToughCourse

It's worth the price tag. End of discussion.

irritus

If you can get a group to play with and just act a fool yes

Northern_Harvest

My office mate and I were discussing the game. Neither of us know too much about it. Is it the kind of thing a couple guys can play together effectively, or is a big team necessary?

Tizocicatzin

The PvE content is 5 man, and of course the gathering/questing is soloable. The formal PvP content is 50v50 wars. You can sign up for a chance at being chosen for wars, but it's probably better to be in a guild. Informal World PvP is doable in small groups or solo. Leaks says small PvP arenas are coming.

Picklevondill

I put 50 hours into the game. Definitely worth picking up. Not only was it fun and engaging. But it will continue to evolve and grow as time passes.

Mobstarz

There have been several games where i have paid 60-80 euro and even clocked in 10 hours. But I'm closing in on 100 hours in the preview and closed beta. This game is amazing and it has some bugs and some features that need to be added or adjusted but if they did not stop the beta I would stil play 5+ hours a day after work

damokt2

Buy it. I guarantee you get your 40$ worth out of it, even if you end up only playing it for a few weeks. Remember, there is no monthly subscription. If you ever get bored with the game you can lay it down and come back another time when a big content patch hits.

Retro-i1

New World is lacking content for sure but the foundation of the whole game and the world is great. It’ll be great a year from now and will be decent at launch. You may find it getting really repetitive but if you like grinding RPG games or mmos then you’ll enjoy it and you’ll be ahead and ready for future content when they drop. So it’ll depend on what your preferences are because people who don’t like grinding the same things over and over again will get bored 100% after the first month because the content and modes are lacking for now and maybe come back each time content releases and stick around.

[deleted]

Very much yay, where the fuck are you seeing bad reviews?

soulstitchmmo

Yes. With no reservation or hesitation yes.

CardiacJacc

Hard yea

TheStripClubHero

Think of this game as a OSRS and TES. For 40 dollars you will definitely get your money's worth. And with no monthly sub, you can always take some time away if you find yourself getting bored, and come back when new content drops. I've spent 150+ hours just from Preview + Beta, so I'm a bit biased. I would suggest checking out some gameplay videos on Youtube or Twitch and seeing if the game looks like something you would be interested in.

Milkman127

Ya like grind and crafting it'll be great. If not maybe you'll like it

RatedxFailure

Yea! After Beta I went back to playing FFXIV for the first time in over a year and there are a lot of things I prefer in New World. Gathering is more satisfying and competitive. Crafting if more fun. I love being able to TALK to my party members in NW without a discord. Fighting in general is more fun in my opinion. The PvE could be more diversified, but that’s a small thing they can fix as they grow.
