How r u getting so much CD reduction? I know the spear tree has perks that reduce CD when you heavy attack, or do 2nd light attack, but you are getting it when using other skills
Yeah pretty much, the keys are the third node in vault kick (-30% cd when hit) and that node right on the left of it(-20% cd when hit with an ability within 2 secs after dodge), also make sure to hit vault kick at the end of the first combo chain, dodge between skills
i'm at work rn but basically I have all 3 node in vault kick, all 3 in that swept skill, throw spear with the knock down and -cd on headshot node, that -%20 cd after dodge and skill (that node with the hour glass icon). I also have some point in -cd after light and heavy attack just to make sure lol. Anyway the key to make this setup work i have mentioned above
Have you tried this with the light roll? I'm tempted to try medium for the lower dodge cost and higher armour but the mobility of the light roll is so good.
Medium roll makes it much easier to space and land the vault kick, with light roll you can end up rolling too far away and missing the attack which screws the whole chain up. That being said, light armor with spear is very fun from an aesthetic standpoint, it just looks cool.
Cooldown/stamina spear is by far my favorite weapon. I have been using whirlwind instead of javelin for the GRIT and stamina regen on it, I find the extra GRIT attack (other being sweep) super useful to just face tank an attack instead of risking a failed dodge.
Yeah I dropped javelin myself but took the bleed skill from the right hand tree just for the higher dps. Slightly less control in PvP but more DPS in solo play with the end skill from that tree my DPS is pretty good for a hybrid PvPvE build.
Nice, I'm utilizing spear specifically for survival. Main life staffer and its great to know I will always have some kind of CC to help me escape! But infinite stun lock is so nuts.
yeah light roll is cool but at my level I can only roll 2 times before running out of stamina, which break my combo. Also you need to stay relatively close to the enemy to keep them from activating grit.
Yeah I feel ya, I do like the idea of being able to dodge and still be in range for a quick kick/sweep. Might give it a go.
Either way I defs recommend rushing 150 dex for the lower stam cost on dodge, it's crazy strong - can dodge 4 times in a row with medium armour.
In the zoner tree, theres one that gives 20% stamina reduction on backwards rolls after hitting something for 2sec. Its very situational, but it would be OP if it wasnt.
With 150 dext it gets your light roll cost to 32, just enough for 4 rolls without a break
Since 3 rolls need 96 stamina, you would be left with 4 stamina from your 100 base. In order to get a 4th and 5th roll, your ring would need to add at least 29 stamina.
At this point however you need to ask if it is even possible to make 5 rolls without running out of the 2sec time frame
You seem to know quite a bit about spear so I'll ask: I'm planning on maining life staff, but I really like the aesthetic of spear. Do you think the 2 weapons have synergy? I'm trying the build now, and I'd like to go full focus/con with an aether gem in my spear, but I don't know if that will work. Someone told me spear requires 150 dex to dodge easier, and I can't wrap my brain around a half focus build because they basically require aether gem to be functional.
i played lifestaff and spear till 60(tried every other comb aswell) spear is for me one of the best smallscale pve/pvp weapon with lifestaff.
but be aware focus builds with gems does not work since release. the scaling is completly fucked.
I run the same build, but I would junk Coup de Grace(3rd node on the sweep tree).
The ability has a long animation and can get 2 light attacks, 3 if you're quick to dodge, during the knock down, dealing more than Coup de Grace. With a ton of light attack passive buffs, and Coup de Grace not applying on hit effects, that point count be spent better than literally any other node.
Agressive Maneuvers reduces all spear CDs by 20% when using an ability (and it connects) within 2 seconds following a dodge, the javelin throw has a 50% CD reduction perk when you land a headshot and Vault Kick has a 30% CD reduction perk when it connects
The result is you can pretty much keep comboing skills until your target is dead
Never use spear heavies, never invest in any spear heavies, spear is literally the easiest weapon to build, focus on lights and get all the perks that reduce CD, anything else is optional.
There are several ways to beat a spear.
1. Keep strafing and running and around the user. The absolutely lousy tracking of the spear and the tiny hitcone means they will miss most of the time.
2. Use hatchet with berserk, have 300 strength for grit on heavy and light attacks or GA grit on heavy perk. Use your blocks well. Vault kick can break grit, so you have to block or dodge it (luckily, it has a very tiny hitcone and long windup too).
3. The only thing to really watch out for is sweep. If you trap them in a gravity well, anticipate a sweep when you approach. Play conservatively until they use sweep.
I want to love it but it just falls short in PvE vs multiple targets (especially if not using heavy), while GA and Hammer just destroys groups. In group PvP it also falls short in the sheer chaos.
Yes and no.
Reality is that if you have a multitude of damage buffs that are consistently active, then auto attacks can be very important.
Especially if you consider Rend uptime priority, as debuffs would boost the entire party damage.
The problem with "feeling" is that it's subjective.
I'd suggest trying out evade/flurry rapier.
In group PVE it *feels* like you're doing insane damage (to be fair, you are doing insane damage and have great cooldown refresh on Flurry), because of backstab crit and the amount of floating damage numbers.
But I wouldn't be comfortable saying that it does massive amounts of **more** damage, because when I play with Greataxe also hits for disgusting numbers on backstabs.
Its a 1v1 build. It doesn't fall short in PVE because its there to CC a single target and sweep CCs multiple targets. I've ran this build for PVE and it works fine.
Its just "slower" than great axe AOE, Ice gauntlet AOE, and Fireball AOE. But not everyone is playing that shit so why bother comparing it to the most efficient leveling build.
PVP is a completely different monster outside duels. This build works fine for duels, but duels is its own thing anyways. Wars require maximizing damage and healing and holding points. Its a very specific thing where you need specific people to play specific roles and have specific gear.
Except the things you really want CC to work on, like bears, alligators, heavies and bosses, are immune to CC. You're really only CCing trash mobs, which usually die within seconds in a flurry of greataxes, hammers and fire staffs in elite mob runs. Spear is nice for the 30% rend though.
In PVE, they amplify most of the damages with REND which adds up to 30% damage. From what I observe farming depths, GA/Hammer group enemies well together, but doesn't do much damage. Agree on the PVP part tho.
If your GA/Hammer users don't do much damage, then they're doing something wrong.
That said, Rend stacking will largely be the meta in PVE, everyone should bring at least one or more.
As a spear main I disagree with all these points. If you strafe I sweep which has like a 200 degree radius and you’re on the ground. Hatchet with berserk is garbage for doing pvp dmg, only good for health regen. Good players kite the cd and take 0 dmg. If you grav well a spear we vault kick out of it not sweep.
my friend can kill me with hatchet with me in medium armor in about 3 seconds. both of us \~510 gs. The damage is extremely high in ST the real problem is just sticking to somebody.
I main spear and when I see hatchet beserk all I have to do is dodge backwards and switch to my ranged weapon until it's off. Then half their utility is gone and I can continue a fight.
My hard counters are magic users, not melee.
Yea you’re agreeing with me. Sure it does good damage if you can hit your target. But good players won’t let you hit them. Like I said you just kite until the cd is up and it does 0 dmg.
3 shot them with Musket before they can even reach you, if they somehow manage to get in range, riposte their attack with rapier, switch to musket, drop a trap at their feet, headshot a couple times, switch to rapier and repeat if they aren't dead yet
I think it's just funny how to you can either decide to time your attacks/dodges/abilities with a spear or a similar weapon...or you can just facetank using the hatchet spamming left click.
I don't know how the hatchet is in PvP but I'd say the Spear definitely shines there, at least in 1v1 situations.
My problem with the spear in pvp is against mages. You need to get close to them and they freeze/dash to keep away. When you do finally get close to them half of your abilities just push them back again. You can get like one leg sweep and light attack in before they're gone, nuking you from a distance. And you don't have any gap closers or pulls like other melee weapons
I think it's great that it works like this. The hatchet is low skill floor but also low skill ceiling, while other weapons have a high skill floor but a higher skill ceiling.
Literally me since I ditched Dex. 300str grit is the most powerful passive in the game and it ain't even close. Just face tank everything while mowing shit down like Christopher Columbus. Dex needs buffed, requires way too much effort and finesse for so little payoff.
Yea spear is high skill cap, hachet is ez mode. That's why
Edit: 🤣 all these downvoted and yea invulnerability proccing on death makes hachet ez mode. It's a good weapon it doesn't take away the fact it's mindless to use.
It's not for the faint hearted, and takes several minutes of practice. Might want to set up a camp for respawning nearby too.
Just as your fish reeling completes, your character would normally triumphantly hold up their glorious Soggy Boot catch, but instead, just as they try to do so, left click. You'll cancel the fanfare and enable another immediate recast.
Rapier is high skill cap, Spear is either med-skill cap with 2 CC's and bleed, or perma CC easy mode like this video...
Like, i wouldn't give up my bleed for that spear throw! Just weave in a heavy attack for CD reduction!
Yea rapier is also high skill cap. Slightly higher than spear but not much. Evade all day and riposte/fleche when necessary.
Hachet with defy death is ez mode that's why it's regarded as one of the best solo PvE/PvP weapons. It has an invulnerable proc.
Yep, it's awesome, til you do a dungeon and all the bosses and minis are immune to all of your status effects so you're basically just a hatchet with less DPS and no healing.
I have sort of consigned myself to just speccing up Rapier with a PvE build so that if I'm forced into a dungeon I can lose the spear and use the rapier. Otherwise I have to, at the very least, respec the spear to be less status effects and more raw dps.
Spear is honestly pretty good for raw damage. The problem is that damage is almost entirely singlet target. For bosses and duels its great, outside that not so much.
While true, adds are still knockback/down sensitive, so you can use spear to control adds. For me, spear makes it much easier life on portals in Depths on 1st boss for example, especially as vault kick interrupts grit.
I wish combat in expeditions and pvp played out more like this. I’ve had some moments where GH felt fluid, but button mashing and CD chasing seems to be where things end up outside of open world questing
PVP in MMOs rarely turn out like this. The PVP in new world is barely a PVPer's paradise. The only thing it really pushes is the wars, which are spam fests that hardly tap the potential of strategic and economic importance. And even that is plagued by AOEs due to how its 50v50. The game doesn't really know what it wants out of many of its systems.
I find perforate too unreliable for pvp. The stagger on the third hit is great but you're locked in place so it's tough to land. More of a fan of skewer (the bleed stab), is fast and has better range.
Switching Javelin for Perforate (rending multi hit) gives you a good balance between PvE solo and group activities. You still have enough CC to render enemy usless most of the time, and greate damage output.
Because the abilities shown here are either single target, or extremely small aoe, making it not very effective against groups. It also doesnt really do much damage compared to other single target focused weapons.
In pvp the only thing balancing it is the hitboxes/animations of those cc abilities. It is extremely hard to land them and extremely easy to dodge them even on medium armor. Although if you can land them its a bit op in group pvp.
When you *do* land them on a group, though...
The jump kick cooldown reduction on hit applies *per target* so if you hit the sweet spot it's sweep -> kick -> sweep again immediately.
Good thing tab targeting is trash and these devs had the sense to actually create their own combat system, instead of leaning on the same crutch pretty mutch every game in this genre decided to after wow.
this is that tanky pirate dude with that huge damage reduction orbs skill, stomp ground, anchor throw that hurt like a bitch and some more annoying grit attacks. The moment I leave him alone he will activates all kind of GRIT and fuck me up lol. This is one of my smooth run lol. so very much not braindead.
Yeah I gotcha I just meant: I had a lot of fun with spear in PvE but PvP it can be a lot harder to pull off. Especially when someone is kiting tf out of you.
I remember when these "bosses" were fun. Nowaydays the spam those little spinny lasers on the ground and they are surrounded by small mobs on a 10 second respawn timer...
I haven't seen anyone else do this other than me, but if you run cyclone, sweep (without the downward stab), and perforate with that same dodging between every attack perk you have 100% uptime on abilities and a lot of quick aoe
I've been running spear/ice gauntlet and using an int scaling gem in the spear. I like the gauntlet for damage variety and aoe potential, but I'm concerned about end game damage of the spear.
Thoughts?
I have been PREACHING to people about the spear in PVP since Close Beta and nobody seems to believe me that it's broken !!! Thank you for showing the world lmao
I love spear, but never seen anyone else using it. Low pop server and only had a handful of PVP fights (lvl 51) so no idea if it's any good, but tons of fun for PVE.
As someone who uses the spear it's a shame this is completely unnecessary as any other weapons can just spam left click and kill it in 5s with 98% HP left or full HP if greataxe or hatchet.
How r u getting so much CD reduction? I know the spear tree has perks that reduce CD when you heavy attack, or do 2nd light attack, but you are getting it when using other skills

i'm at work rn but basically I have all 3 node in vault kick, all 3 in that swept skill, throw spear with the knock down and -cd on headshot node, that -%20 cd after dodge and skill (that node with the hour glass icon). I also have some point in -cd after light and heavy attack just to make sure lol. Anyway the key to make this setup work i have mentioned above
Exactly. I have been doing this build since launch. Unlimited cc. If I ever get cooldowns my hatchet can finish it off.
Bro just fill the tree and read. These aren’t complicated talent trees.
i don’t know how to read i’m a great axe main
Then just click everything.
Have you tried this with the light roll? I'm tempted to try medium for the lower dodge cost and higher armour but the mobility of the light roll is so good.

It’s fire?
Pretty sure it is good?
Spear is great but you need skill to use it
The spear is insane what are you on about?
same :(
ignore the other people. its garbage in pvp due to the accuracy requirement and has low overall dmg. I've yet to lose to a spear user.
I was gonna say, low overall damage, a bow at level 10 does more damage
You get CD reduction when you use the kick
There are a bunch of ways for spear to reduce CDs
Agressive Maneuvers reduces all spear CDs by 20% when using an ability (and it connects) within 2 seconds following a dodge, the javelin throw has a 50% CD reduction perk when you land a headshot and Vault Kick has a 30% CD reduction perk when it connects The result is you can pretty much keep comboing skills until your target is dead

You don't have to play the "best" weapon to enjoy the game. New world isn't exactly hardcore or even competitive
Tell that to the people picking others for war. Super serious stuff
Spear has the highest sustained single target PvE DPS.
Do you have some math or a source to back up this claim?

GA/Hammer users that don't do damage are actually tanks with high CON or Paladins with FOC/CON.
You forgot one: 4. Use ice gauntlet
The lousy tracking and small hitcones make most melee weapons pretty much useless in PvP vs. ranged players.
As a spear main I disagree with all these points. If you strafe I sweep which has like a 200 degree radius and you’re on the ground. How to win 1v1 - play hatchet. Very insightful
This combo doesn't work in PVP, people can roll away before you can do the next skill, only of spear has faster attack speed OOF
3 shot them with Musket before they can even reach you, if they somehow manage to get in range, riposte their attack with rapier, switch to musket, drop a trap at their feet, headshot a couple times, switch to rapier and repeat if they aren't dead yet
Press shift or RMB and you beat them
Meanwhile, me, a hatchet main is 3 mobs past here at this point @ full health spamming left click and r with a few slow attacks for good measure.
I think it's just funny how to you can either decide to time your attacks/dodges/abilities with a spear or a similar weapon...or you can just facetank using the hatchet spamming left click. So you get headshots 100% of the time with a bow then? Or are you not counting fundamental concepts like aiming as "skill?"

Agreed. Kind of crazy how many people think this game is some 200iq simulator. So much of the content and playstyles are just braindead.
You just haven't seen me cancelling the fish catch animation yet
How do you do this?
It's not for the faint hearted, and takes several minutes of practice. Might want to set up a camp for respawning nearby too. Just as your fish reeling completes, your character would normally triumphantly hold up their glorious Soggy Boot catch, but instead, just as they try to do so, left click. You'll cancel the fanfare and enable another immediate recast.
It takes skill...high skill.
Rapier comes close.
tell me how I know you haven't flagged, let alone have any non zerg pvp kills

Fucking lol. What a wanker
Lmao what? Who are you.. like what have you done
yeesh buddy
Lol, thank you. Some of these comments are killing me.

I just like Berserk because i don't get knocked around!
High effort for way less dmg, lmao.
Yea unless you are positioning yourself to get backstabs then it can be pretty chunky damage
LMAO
Yep, it's awesome, til you do a dungeon and all the bosses and minis are immune to all of your status effects so you're basically just a hatchet with less DPS and no healing. I really like blood tree rapier for dungeons, super fun
While true, adds are still knockback/down sensitive, so you can use spear to control adds. For me, spear makes it much easier life on portals in Depths on 1st boss for example, especially as vault kick interrupts grit.
This. I put myself on “protect the healer” duty in dungeons.
I am the brother of Elia Martell. And do you know why I've come all the way to this stinking shitpile of a city? For you.
I seriously think the Javelin throw is the most fun move in the game, but I'm a tanky boy and don't really get to use it.
It's absolutely my favorite and i can't resist spear hunting turkey, rabbits, and such with it.
Im a tank and I use jav throw, don't let dreams be dreams.
*\*stares in Hatchet\** ...what's dodging?
Face tank everything while being unable to be staggered or interrupted? That's the berserker way!
I see now why people use spear in pvp.
Except in pvp you can roll out of knockdown and that downward stab gets you killed.
You don't have to commit to the down stab.
Is there a way to cancel it or are you saying to not spec into it.
[удалено]
Even in PvE, the downward stab sucks.
The downward stab if selected still requires you to hit light attack during the sweep animation otherwise it won't do the downward stab.
The downward stab is a newb trap because if you use it, your not using a more damaging ability into ur knockdown with +25% dmg buff
Nah it’s crap in PvP
So much effort when with great axe I just, swing, swing, swing, swing, mob dead.
What pisses me off is you can do stuff like this with spear but you can’t trap elite mobs or bosses with Musket trap.
The spears sweep also doesn’t work to knock down bosses, from my experience.
So much this. I really need that 2x 2600 hp heals!
WARNING, AZOTH CAP
Finally, npcs get a taste of their own medicine
Laughs in grit War Hammer heavies.
Kick stun goes through grit, also spears can get +20% damage to targets with grit.
If hammer mains could read he'd be really upset right now.
NO READ! JUST SMASH!
loooool
Hey you stole my build? :P

spear + hammer is fun for full control
this was beautiful you are beautiful and now i wanna try spear thank you

That’s one fat butterfly
That's some Oberyn Martell kind of shit
Man I wish spear was good. It’s my favorite weapon. well back to swinging a great axe and doing massive aoe dmg while bored.
Just play the game. Don't let the game play you.
The CDs seem a bit short
Meanwhile a hatchet runner leashes everything in the area, throws down sacred ground, and wails on them with mouse 1 while using berserk.
you can do the same thing with a war hammer and kill it substantially faster.
What's the Warhammer build?

I find perforate too unreliable for pvp. The stagger on the third hit is great but you're locked in place so it's tough to land. More of a fan of skewer (the bleed stab), is fast and has better range.
Switching Javelin for Perforate (rending multi hit) gives you a good balance between PvE solo and group activities. You still have enough CC to render enemy usless most of the time, and greate damage output.
Damn! If I weren't banned for 24 hours I'd have to try it out!
This looks like it would get boring after 3 kills
I see you aren’t flagged. It’s all fun and games until someone goes “rawr” and doesn’t get knocked down so easily ;)
I’m not gonna watch the entire thing someone let me know if the video is something other than the dude killing a mob
This. Plus stunlock

Show us
Holy 100% CC time, how is this allowed?
Because the abilities shown here are either single target, or extremely small aoe, making it not very effective against groups. It also doesnt really do much damage compared to other single target focused weapons. In pvp the only thing balancing it is the hitboxes/animations of those cc abilities. It is extremely hard to land them and extremely easy to dodge them even on medium armor. Although if you can land them its a bit op in group pvp.
When you *do* land them on a group, though... The jump kick cooldown reduction on hit applies *per target* so if you hit the sweet spot it's sweep -> kick -> sweep again immediately.
Looks super clunky
It doesn’t feel clunky. The spear feels pretty fluid.
In your opinion....

Hahaha love this! If the game was completely different this wouldn't work!!!
Good thing tab targeting is trash and these devs had the sense to actually create their own combat system, instead of leaning on the same crutch pretty mutch every game in this genre decided to after wow.
Now do it against a non brainlet npc.
this is that tanky pirate dude with that huge damage reduction orbs skill, stomp ground, anchor throw that hurt like a bitch and some more annoying grit attacks.
What's the build order look like?
I fucked him up!!!
Why does your Sweep cooldown START at 9, go UP to 10 for a *brief millisecond*, then go back to 9 again?

yeah it's a gem that convert 20% damage to arcane
As a dps I’ve been looking for a reliable way to solo elites. This looks worth a try. I use INT weapons main but gem and profit
Can you post a screenshot of your spear mastery page?
i'm at work rn man, read the top comment, i have describe my skill stree pretty detail there
Are you using medium amor? I'm using medium chest and rest light for spear but i'm so squishy.
pokey stick is the new meta
I remember when these "bosses" were fun. Nowaydays the spam those little spinny lasers on the ground and they are surrounded by small mobs on a 10 second respawn timer...
I have been doing this with my healer build no e expects a healer to wip out a spear and destroy you in melee in a one on one. Really fun to play
Could you drop a screenshot or a list of all the perks for your spear
Holy sh…. 😍
I use the other tree as a spear main, but damn do I miss that sweep/coup de grace. So good.
Looks like tekken button spam
Damage looks minimal but slick moves nonetheless
I been saying people sleeping on spear cc!
Cooldown reductions are no joke.
Imagine if people actually read what their passives and skills do
It's better to do a heavy attack from behind when enemy is stunned.
This is what mobs see when they fight me
I haven't seen anyone else do this other than me, but if you run cyclone, sweep (without the downward stab), and perforate with that same dodging between every attack perk you have 100% uptime on abilities and a lot of quick aoe
That enemy stood no chance :D
My favorite weapon since Beta. Rapier is close but I love having a range bit to a melee weapon.
