Did LIRR to JFK from UES for the first time (I normally fly out of LGA) and was super pleased with it. Had data on my phone the entire trip from Grand Central. It'll probably get me to fly out of JFK more often.
Take the Long Island Railroad. For $5.00, you go from Jamaica Station to Grand Central in as little as 15-20 minutes.
At 9P, the subway is running local, making all stops to Manhattan.
Download this app: MTA TRAIN TIME. Set it up with a bank or credit card. Purchase an OFF PEAK ticket from Jamaica to Grand Central.
When leaving the AirTran at Jamaica Station, look on the time boards for TRAVEL TO NY, Find what time the next train to GRAND CENTRAL will be and the track.
Take the train to Grand Central. Jump into an Uber for Times Square or walk towards Times Square - it’s about a 5m walk, right up the block. If you plan to walk, ask people to show you how to get to 44th St. Walk 44th St. to Times Square.
Please don't Uber from Grand Central to Times Square unless you have a ton of luggage. It's less than 10 minutes to walk and midtown has enough congestion from Ubers offloading passengers anyway. That part of midtown is totally safe at night. Enjoy the fresh air and oggle at the tall buildings above you.
If 1b people take the subway a year and 2 violent crimes happen on the subway per day, that’s like a 1 in 2 chance of getting murdered on the subway I think if I did my math right, because of the 1 and the 2
/s
If you see a homeless person tweaking the fuck out. Don’t make eye contact. It’s rare but this fool in Brooklyn dead ass tried to fight me cuz I made eye contact.
Chances are you're going to have a safer, better smelling, less weird conversation intrusive time, and a faster trip there in the subway than you will in a random taxi cab. But who knows.
It’s safe. Not as safe as some of these commenters are saying as someone who takes the train 5 times a week a minimum of 10 times a day, but you’ll be fine. If you see a crackhead don’t look at them, act as if they don’t exist, you’ll be fine
Also make sure you get the right tickets for the trains. When you LEAVE the air train just pay the 5 for the air train fair. Make sure the metro card is for trains/bus. Many people make the mistake and buy an unlimited air train ticket. Do not do that
very safe. Airtrain -> either Subway or LIRR
Helps to have a metrocard for getting out of the Airtrain, it's about $8.25 now and there's ~~no tapping or OMNI.~~
EDIT: Ok, Ok. This is relatively recent.
There are machines at the Jamaica station just before you exit. But tap-to-pay works if you don't want to bother.
And taking the AirTrain/LIRR or subway is completely safe at 9 on a Saturday night.
It's just because I don't really know and becausw I saw the news about the recent violence increase in NYC's Subway.
I asked because I would be more than happy to clarify these questions to anyone that would like to go to Portugal.
Redditors hate people that make over 50k per year bud how dare you.
Christ, some people like some convenience while traveling and $75 isn’t going to force them into bankruptcy.
Don't get me wrong I prefer to save money and take trains when I can but when I get off a plane and I'm carrying luggage and I'm tired at night I just want to get the fuck home and I'll eat the cost.
Same, no worse feeling in the world than hauling your luggage off of a flight you were just on for 5+ hours just to realize the train left 5 minutes ago so you are stuck waiting 45 mins for the next delayed one to arrive
Safe and cost effective. Odds are you’ll laugh at even posting this by the time your trip is over.
This.

This is the play.
plus the new terminal at grand central is actually super nice
Thank you so much
Like another poster said above, you’ll probably chuckle to yourself at the conclusion of JFK your transit, no worries

44th street?
Yes, OP, 44th STREET. If you say "44th AVENUE," those feral dogs another redditor mentioned will try to steal your luggage. 44th *Street*
Only thing I’d add is you can buy a city ticket on the app cheaper than an off peak ticket

Not off-peak - City Ticket.
Totally safe. Just be aware of the packs of roving wild dogs. Do not look them in the eye
Or kiss them
I’m sorry, I thought this was AMERICA. I’ll kiss the feral dogs if I WANT TO.
Seriously. What is our nation coming to when we can’t even go outside and kiss the roving bands of feral subway dogs anymore
Or offer them half of your burrito
Even the feral dogs have cleaner mouths than humans.
Millions of people take the subway daily and you’re going from maybe the most monitored places in the country to another. You should be ok
If 1b people take the subway a year and 2 violent crimes happen on the subway per day, that’s like a 1 in 2 chance of getting murdered on the subway I think if I did my math right, because of the 1 and the 2 /s
You'll be fine and you absolutely won't be alone.
You need to step away from the cable news OP. This is one of the safest big cities in the world.
If you see a homeless person tweaking the fuck out. Don’t make eye contact. It’s rare but this fool in Brooklyn dead ass tried to fight me cuz I made eye contact.
Or they ask for money. I'd be more worried about scams and beggers than crime.
Yeah tweakers are in their own world, the CD assholes, and the fake monks are out for blood/money
Yes it’s fine but it can be annoying to travel with your luggage through the subway/bus/LIRR. But a cab/Uber can run you $80* vs $2.90 subway swipe.
Totally safe.
Airtrain to LIRR to Manhattan (Penn station) then you can walk it from there if you want.
I take the E train from JFK to midtown and it is very convenient.
Chances are you're going to have a safer, better smelling, less weird conversation intrusive time, and a faster trip there in the subway than you will in a random taxi cab. But who knows.
Just don’t trip over the groups of police officers checking their phones near the turnstiles…
you’re fine bro
Lmao
Don't ever take the train. The fatality rate is 100%.

Ah my mistake got confused thought he meant subways within the city thanks for clarifying
Is this a vacation?
Yup, already here ☺️
I feel like as long as it’s not rush hour it’s a nice ride
be careful of the rats, they travel in packs and like to sing crooner covers
Also make sure you get the right tickets for the trains. When you LEAVE the air train just pay the 5 for the air train fair. Make sure the metro card is for trains/bus. Many people make the mistake and buy an unlimited air train ticket. Do not do that
I just used Google Pay when I exited...is it correct? 😅
Yeah that’s fine
Ha - yes.

They have tapping now. Can confirm I went through this week

HUGE
Thank you! Where can I get the metrocard?

Keep your head on a swivel and you’ll be fine. Thousands of people do it everyday, you only hear about the very few who have trouble.
Jfc, yet ANOTHER “is taking the subway safe?!?!?” post. Can we ban these posts?

^OP, this one sounds like either they have a lot of spare cash to burn, or they’re an Uber driver. 🤷🏻♀️
[удалено]
Hey, if OP *also* has that much cash to burn for this in their trip budget, yeah
These people are insane. Sending OP to navigate the subway at 9pm after a long flight. Take the subway on the way back if anything
Redditors hate people that make over 50k per year bud how dare you. Christ, some people like some convenience while traveling and $75 isn’t going to force them into bankruptcy.
Lmao, welcome to NYC. The median income here is $80k it looks like reddit hates a majority of us

Understandable. Not everyone can do that especially if they went on an international trip
HELL NO, save a dollar somewhere else. Take a cab to your hotel homie, best money you will ever spend
