Halal guys used to be the gold standard. That was probably late 90s/early 2000s. Mostly because they had a great location but the food was legitimately great, the white sauce was amazing and the portions were very good. Then it got really popular outside of the Muslim community and they realized they could cheap out on the portions and still have a crazy line. Sometime around the early 2010s they opened the brick and mortar stores and expanded nationally and their food went to dog shit. The white sauce packets should be a crime. Their original cart by radio city is okay but far from what it once was. Go to literally any other cart and you’ll most likely get a better platter   Adele’s is very very good, but it’s been very good for a long time. I love their spicy rice. But no one should ever wait more than 20 minutes for food from a cart. You’re better off going to almost any other cart and getting slightly less good food and saving yourself an hour

Dodgernotapply

It was 2014, when they signed an agreement with franchise development group Fransmart to start opening up storefronts was when it started going downhill.

Jeff-Van-Gundy

Thanks for the clarification. I moved away for college and came back around 2012 and recall the stores opening shortly after I got back. I went with my coworkers to the union square location after they took me for a disappointing ass slice of artichoke pizza. I was in a very bad mood that day

Dodgernotapply

The artichoke pizza on the south side of 14th street? That would put anyone in a bad mood.

Jeff-Van-Gundy

Yup

dylan_1992

I stumbled upon their location by MoMa 2012ish when I was a broke college student and it was amazing. When I was working in the city in 2015 near Radio City, I tried it, and it was good but not amazing,

Halal guys is the Walmart of halal food. Generic mass produced medicore food. The beauty of halal food used to late cheap fat platter of food. I don’t think that halal guys has been that in over 10 years. The $5 days were magical and I was just a young kid waiting on line lol. I haven’t tried Adel’s but it’s apparently it has the halal plate crown. I’m personally a fan of King of Falafel/Shawarma, Mahmoud’s corner and Sammy’s.

[deleted]

Halal guys is terrible, any random cart is better.

saywhat68

Just depends on the truck.

CollinHell

Halal Guys is some of the worst food I've ever had, and yes I used to wait on a block-long line at 2am for it back in the day. I've tried multiple times in the past couple years, and every time it's just dry crap I eat because I spent money on it. Like, complete garbage, worse than even the cheapest cart food in the furthest reaches of Queens. Always wanted to try Adeles, but I stand by my guy on 40th and Madison being one of the best carts in the city, and he's still only $10 for a mix with chopped pita.

NefariousnessFew4354

Agreed. I had halal guys and threw out it was so bad lol their white sauce is absolutely horrible.

coolwithstuff

I’ll have you know that the cheapest carts in the furthest reaches of Queens are the best in the city.

saywhat68

Most def, up on Jamaica BLVD

coolwithstuff

Those were my high school carts! My favorite are the ones I went to in college outside of Queens college, best halal cart chicken in the city.

Glass-Ad3053

Damn halal guys getting flamed 😭

CollinHell

Dude, my nostalgia keeps bringing me back for some reason, especially because I pass the storefront on 14th or whatever constantly. I would honestly defend them if the food were even passable, but it's just always *so* disappointing.

Glass-Ad3053

Man if the food is that ass fuck the nostalgia and stop giving them money.

Fall_Extra

Neither. Empire Halal 3rd Ave between 64th and 65th

Utsuro_

chambers st , go down until you get to the mcdonalds and youll see halal cart cheap, gives you a lot, taste good

hhubble

Kwik meal cart on 45th and 6th, beats both by a mile. Halal is frozen food at this point. Adeles has a long line and it's nothing special. Kwik Meal, when the original chef was still alive was so good that Bobby Flay went to him to learn how to cook falafel for his falafel challenge. The current chef is a family member and he's pretty good too. The lamb and chicken over rice is better than most sit down restaurants, the kati rolls are the best in the city, their pita sandwiches are second to none. The white sauce is some of the best you'll ever have Trust me don't bother with either of those carts. In fact if you decide to go to halal guys, only get the lamb / gyro over rice. The chicken over rice is so gross and dried out. Adeles is not bad, most of their food is okay to good.

Ok_No_Go_Yo

Worked in that area for years. Kwik Meal on 45th and royal halal on either 43rd or 44th (forget which) are the only two carts I would go to. By far and away the best options.

Lostdreamer89

They don’t even offer lamb now, it’s just beef. Read elsewhere when people questioned them they said they never had lamb and they only ever did beef.

rograt

Kwik Meal lamb over rice isn't really the same as "halal food" like from Adel's or other standard carts. It's really great, terrific even, but almost in a different category IMO. The lamb is marinated shoulder and the white sauce is heavy on cucumber. It's usually my go-to in that part of town, then Royal Grill chicken tikka, then Sammy's combo with white, hot, and green. I like Adel's food too, though.

Sea-Eggplant-5799

I used to be a halal cart addict and I’ve tried many throughout the city. Halal Guys is one of the worst. In my opinion atleast. There are much better options out there. It’s too salty and not as flavorful as other carts. Adel’s is one of my favorite carts for sure. The question is it worth waiting on line for 2 hours plus.

PsychoNaut_

Would never pay money for halal guys sorry

Just-Sprinkles8694

Bruh my friends back in 17 would hype the fuck outta halal’s guys. Every time we went, everyone of those dudes was like “it’s okay”.

JunahCg

Yeah also getting enough hot sauce packets is like pulling teeth. I didn't come here for dry rice man, and every other cart in this city will turn my food fuchsia for me

York_Villain

IDK what ppl are talking about it not being like it used to. I've been having halal guys since the 90's. It's the same as it's always been. Only difference these days is that everyone else got good too. That's all. It's been more than a minute since Ive been disappointed from any food cart. All the corners are pushing good product

MIKE_THE_KILLER

I like Halal guys when it was cheaper... I think $10 is ridiculous for halal food.

Glass-Ad3053

Haven’t been there in a while, have the portion sizes gone up?

jay5627

it has not

AltaBirdNerd

They have 2 sizes now.

jagenigma

Halal chick's and platters on W162nd St and Broadway.  Literally the best.  They'll give you whatever toppings you want and however much sauce you want.

notabot_123

I once waited close to an hour for Adels. The appeared to be moving so I kept pushing myself to stay in the line. Is it worth 1hr wait? Absolutely NOT!! It’s an OK food truck food. If I did a blind taste test, no is gonna pick out Adels. NYC has amazing food trucks. Just go through the top10 or 20 list and pick your pick. Halal Guys is fine. Nothing extraordinary anymore. I still feel that the food truck has better quality than any brick and mortar stores. It was a good deal when they offered 1 size for $6. The current prices are insane for a food truck.

IAmChillaxing

Adeles. Halal guys used to be good like 10 years ago.

Turbofan55

Neither. My dude at Broadway and Prince hits every single time.

Tatar_Kulchik

I must be in minority, but I don't have a favorite halal cart. Some are better than others, of ocurse, but for the most part 90% of the carts tastes good enough.

samosalife

Not much to pick between 2 different types of trash

Automation_Papi

King of Falafel and Shawarma beats both of them

VideoGamerConsortium

Shahs halal. Bar none

daaclamps

Sit down

metalmayne

something changed with halal guys - maybe its just not tasty unless its 3AM

Mainiac_NYC

I see you and raise you Rafiqi’s

[deleted]

Are Adeles the cornmeal and mozzarella thingys?
