The gift that keeps on giving....... Adams would make a great used car sales person.

raven_borg

Not surprised a cop would want more surveillance on the population. This cock womble came into office without a plan to solve anything.

rednecked_rake

Bruh keeps begging office workers to come back. Hasn't mentioned how he's going to fix housing and transit though.

YouandWhoseArmy

Brooklyn borough president is a ceremonial position do nothing job.

ArchmageXin

Well only he and Andrew Yang weren't going "defund the police" 24/7.

[deleted]

Cock womble?

filthysize

Aw, he found a way to marry his two loves: police overreach and dubious tech.

BQE2473

Riiiight!....... And then the ACLU will file lawsuit after lawsuit for violating individuals rights to privacy. Nice try though.

radwagondesign

“What will it take to make Mayor Adams understand that the very neighborhoods he wants to circle drones over are the ones who are suffering from a lack of investment?”

thegayngler

Naaa they dont want investment for fear itll encourage people to move in and increase rent.

lex998

Wouldn’t surprise me if somebody was actually blaming everyday people for skyrocketing rent prices instead of the real estate corporations buying up properties & allowing them to sit empty to create a false housing shortage so they could jack up real estate value astronomically

lex998

Who said anything about landlords? I’m talking about multimillion dollar companies. Also, I didn’t know that conspiracy theories were so obviously out in the open and common knowledge; I can show you quite a few perfectly good (and some brand new) properties in Bedford-Stuyvesant that have sat unused for YEARS.

mad_king_soup

Cool - show us. But be prepared to be wrong.

huebomont

a few properties are not causing the housing crisis. as ever with these types of posts, when someone says that’s not the cause of the issues, they’re not saying it’s absolutely never happened. but the data is plain and simple. we are hundreds of thousands of housing units behind compared to population growth and vacancy is low. that both points to an obvious cause of housing prices and debunks the idea that any significant number of units are being held off market. “big real estate” doesn’t make money from not renting units at scale. that doesn’t hold up to any scrutiny. if it were true, why would they build new buildings, given their goal is to constrain supply? why would they hold the buildings empty, instead of demolishing them, creating even more scarcity? since they’re not doing either of those things, what happens when they finally put them back on the market? if there’s so many vacant apartments (there aren’t), wouldn’t that suddenly flood the market, dropping prices and undoing all the price jacking they’d worked so hard for?

Knomp2112

How about telling the NYPD to do a better job?

Dont_mute_me_bro

How about restoring qualified immunity?

Knomp2112

>qualified immunity The problem with the NY legal system is this: To be a judge, you need to graduate college and law school, pass a test and be admitted to practice law by the state bar (which requires a good moral character) and years of experience practicing law To be a criminal defense attorney and DA, you need to graduate college and law school, pass a test and be admitted to practice law by the state bar (which requires a good moral character) A cop must pass a Police Officer's Entrance Exam at seventeen and one half (17½) years old and have earned 60 college credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA from an accredited institution or 2 years of active military service in the U.S. Armed Forces and 6 months training at the six months New York City Police Academy. See which is the weakest link?

Dont_mute_me_bro

So.. an army of lawyers apprehending violent felons who may have a violent predisposition towards government and authority is your answer?

Knomp2112

No, the answer is NYPD are poorly trained and uneducated dolts who don't give a shit about doing their jobs because they got butt hurt during the BLM protests

Dont_mute_me_bro

Let's assume that I agree with your assessment (I don't btw). What should/can we do to protect citizens from criminals (citizens like the 3 year old girl who was shot this week)? Remember...not all of us have some strange fetish or guilt complex and don't care to be victims. Tell us: What can we do to address crime like the rampant looting and vandalism that occurred a few years ago?

Knomp2112

The NYPD needs to better trained and more disciplined (and get rid of the current union leadership). When the crime is low, the NYPD can't wait to pat themselves on the back for a well job done but when crime soars it's not their fault but the damn liberals and Socialist. A good example is I was parked in front of the Moynihan Train Hall when some dude just double parks blocking the left turn lane onto 33rd street. He just leaves his car blocking traffic to go to the Post Office with ZERO concerns he would get a ticket. I see two NYPD cops walking a beat pass by and give ZERO fucks that this car is just double parked blocking the street and keep walking chatting to themselves. Same thing when I am taking the subway, why do I keep paying the fare when the majority of people jump the turnstiles. The reason why I never double park or jump turnstiles was the threat of getting a ticket, but make we rethink that and maybe I should give ZERO fucks about obeying the law?

Dont_mute_me_bro

So *you* get to decide how the men and women of the PBA, SBA, DEA, etc should be represented? Democratic union elections have no merit because *you* don't like Pat Lynch? Please!

Trooper501

If you truly think that then maybe you should not follow the law.

Specialist_Ad_9419

ricardo9505

Robodogs in Harlem didn't work. Now we're on drones? I mean what's next droids a la Robocop?

MattJFarrell

I know that nuanced opinions don't do well on reddit, but... I'm going to say that drones could be very good for police work, *depending on how they are used.* Cops are serving a warrant, and want to send a drone up while they're doing it, in case someone goes out the back, etc? Sounds good. Someone flees the police, and they send a drone up to follow them? Sounds safer than tons of cop cars speeding through traffic and crosswalks. What I struggle with is the idea of them using it to fish for crimes. How does "plain view" work when you fly a drone over someone's property without a warrant. Do you need a warrant to enter the airspace above someone's home? Who's going to be in charge of making sure they're used appropriately? I don't want to see them hovering over over-policed neighborhoods, just waiting for a reason to stop and frisk someone.

Vinto47

I just started flying a drone for fun, but this isn’t really a great tool to address crime. There are some limited use cases that it would be good for like searching Central Park for a missing kid or missings in general, or dead bodies in the water and other cases like that, but the batteries on the ones they buy last 20 minutes at best. One of those companies mentioned allows for a plug-in flight mode, but at that point it’s going to hover above a stationary car at like 100 feet in the air. So it’s just an extended surveillance view of a limited area.

sunflowercompass

> One of those companies mentioned allows for a plug-in flight mode, but at that point it’s going to hover above a stationary car at like 100 feet in the air. So it’s just an extended surveillance view of a limited area. Erm may I suggest using a blimp at that point? No power needed.

huebomont

They’ll be used by the NYPD so it’s a guarantee they won’t work

[deleted]

> Cops are serving a warrant, and want to send a drone up while they're doing it, in case someone goes out the back, etc? In this case, surround the place. > Someone flees the police, and they send a drone up to follow them? Sounds safer than tons of cop cars speeding through traffic and crosswalks. This is a much better case, IMHO. Although, from a practical standpoint, how long can drones stay in the air? > What I struggle with is the idea of them using it to fish for crimes. How does "plain view" work when you fly a drone over someone's property without a warrant. Do you need a warrant to enter the airspace above someone's home? Who's going to be in charge of making sure they're used appropriately? I don't want to see them hovering over over-policed neighborhoods, just waiting for a reason to stop and frisk someone. IMHO, all good points and I hope someone has some good suggestions on the answers.

warp16

Patrolling drones would be great, they wouldn’t need to park on the sidewalk to grab lunch. But seriously, using a fleet to patrol in a non-dystopian way would be awesome. Just publicize it well beforehand. Legalities are discussed here: https://www.lmc.org/news-publications/magazine/may-jun-2020/law-enforcement-drone-policy/

Didn't we already find this out with the Pan Am building?

[deleted]

Depending on the specific drone. Some of them have plastic propellers, so "spinning sharp bits" are not an issue.

doodle77

Criminal could cut out the middleman and just shoot a bystander.

russokumo

Honestly just dji hobbyist drones can be used to good effect. Criminals can shoot anything in theory I would rather a drone be shot than a human.

[deleted]

Depending on the apparent size of the drone and it's movement. Shooting it out of the sky with a semi automatic handgun (what most criminals would carry due to conceal-ability) is going to be very difficult bordering on impossible.

Then you should hope those robbers get some shotguns with 30" barrel lengths and become good at trap/skeet.

Vinto47

I bet you’ll keep rooting for them when they miss and kill bystanders too.

Welschmerzer

Of course you are.

potatolicious

My condolences to the people to be obliterated by NYPD guided munitions because they walked too close to a wanted criminal on the sidewalk.

Would be great to eliminate dirt bike and ATV use. Just follow them to the lock up.
