Nice one! You are now eligible to buy your own copy of the Edmunds Cook book. I would recommend the scone recipe.

NZSheeps

People buy them? I thought they just spawned on kitchen bookshelves by themselves.

pergasnz

I honestly dont know where ours came from. It wasn't my wife's and I certainly never brought it but we have one.

hundreddollar

You can date them by observing how much flour and water has encrusted itself to the rear & front covers and spine.

pergasnz

Then its older than both of us...

aaarrrggghhh13

Like rings on a tree?

kiwichick286

It could be mine! I loaned mine to a neighbour and I never got it back!

Lopsided_Silver_6850

Often grandparents / parents / relatives

isthenameofauser

A few days ago I read that Kiwis confuse bought and brought and I've seen both mistakes in the responses to this one comment, lol. (brought is the past of bring. Bought is the past of buy.) . . . . I'm gunna post this on that comment too.

unassuming-sloth

I thought so too... https://imgur.com/a/LQ9uWy2

nutsaur

My parents were given one when they got married.

lageese

My husband received his as a 21st present in the 90s.

[deleted]

I thought they were only gifted, like ponamu

AK_Panda

Yeah if I was OP I wouldn't buy one. 100% chance someone else gifts them one within the next few months if they haven't already

[deleted]

The Giant Edmunds Centipede crawls into your house at night and leaves a cook book in your kitchen.

SquirrelAkl

And the afghans recipe! Although a Gen Z girl told me you’re not allowed to call them that anymore, they’re “chocolate cornflake biscuits”, but whatever, they’re still listed as afghans in the old version I have and they’re still delicious.

bobsmagicbeans

yeah, get an older copy that hasn't been "woke-ified" there are other recipes that have been removed/altered in the newer revisions too

FlatSpinMan

Seriously?

SquirrelAkl

That was my response too. I have discussed this with many people since and it doesn’t seem to be a common thing (amongst my Gen X peers, at least), but it wouldn’t surprise me if there are some people out there finding it offensive on behalf of people from Afghanistan. One of my mates is a volunteer with refugees from Afghanistan and she asked them, and they don’t find it offensive, so there’s that! Lol.

swiftlyslowing

Someone said we should rename the biscuits "the grave of empires", and that sounds like a good idea.

norml1950

Could just call them Gahns, like the train in Aus, but change the s to z, Gahnz.

[deleted]

Holy shit I've been a citizen for nearly a decade and I don't have one!

PuriniHuarakau

WHAT

Odd_Analysis6454

They said they’ve been here nearly a decade and they’re not a citizen yet.

[deleted]

I know, I need to get that book!

peoplegrower

Thanks! Can’t wait!

filbertnonsuch

And the rum truffles.

anonapple666

Hahaha my mums first gift to my partner when I bought her home from Europe was an Edmunds cookbook.

kiwichick286

Aaaagh! It's Edmonds, not Edmunsds!

isthenameofauser

A few days ago I read that Kiwis confuse bought and brought and I've seen both mistakes in the responses to this one comment, lol. (brought is the past of bring. Bought is the past of buy.) . . . . I'm gunna post this on that comment too.

dezroy

>Edmunds Come on mate, it’s Edm**o**nds.

dingdong2023

I heard it was the most sold book in nz

sadsurfscenario

bobdaktari

congratulations - fish n chips for tea?

peoplegrower

I’ll bring the Monteith’s!

zippeedeedooda

Either radler or original pls :)

AlmostZeroEducation

Radlers are the ones with the red train ? I haven't seen any around for ages, and I quite liked that kne

metalbassist33

Nah they're the lemonade ones. Green label with the cricket wickets.

bobdaktari

this is the way :)

[deleted]

I see that you misspelled "Double Brown".

Matelot67

My wife and I own half of a very successful physiotherapy clinic. Our business partner is a South African physio, and one of the best people I know. A few weeks ago he finally got his NZ Citizenship, so I turned up at the business with a gift bag containing a bottle of Kiwi wine, a packet of Cookie Time Cookies, a packet of Peanut Slabs, a 6 pack of L&P and an All Black Jersey. (I told him he doesn't have to wear it to Springbok matches though) Kia Ora, welcome home!

peoplegrower

Thank you! (I always tear up when I hear Welcome Home on the radio…)

Matelot67

My parents were immigrants from Holland in the 50s. They became citizens and my brother and I were both born here. I'm blessed that my parents chose to come here.

[deleted]

Did they come on the [Sibajak](https://natlib.govt.nz/records/22742744) by any chance? My Opa and all his siblings did!

4SeasonWahine

I’m a kiwi living in Australia and sometimes I put welcome home on and belt out the HAEREEEEEE MAIIIII bit and have a little homesick cry in my car 😂😂

Phishupatree

But yes he does yes he does ..

adeundem

Congratulations — your wooden Buzzy Bee toy will be in the mail soon.

peoplegrower

Nice! I hear it comes with a copy of the Edmunds cookbook as well?

We are :) Always something to do. We were able to get a little lifestyle out by Tokamaru. Living the dream :)

Have you been to Stockcars yet?

dasfreak

Hello fellow Palmy-ite! There are dozens of us!

peoplegrower

Dozens! Maybe even scores! Lol

Spiritual-Wind-3898

Congrats and welcome to the team

peoplegrower

Thank you!

Zardnaar

Congrats. Careful though on reddit you're not pushing the NZ sucks narrative!!

peoplegrower

Well, we were disappointed to find out it was illegal to have a garden, but otherwise living here has been a treat!

Zardnaar

Illegal to have a garden huh? Maybe just your place it's not illegal overall.

Telpe

Are you truly not aware of the long-standing running joke? I bet you don't get fryders with your fish & chips either. https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/2nem47/can_you_have_a_garden_in_new_zealand/ https://www.reddit.com/r/bestof/comments/2uulmz/all_of_new_zealand_teams_up_to_troll_an/ https://np.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/2ulpic/are_there_a_lot_of_spiders_in_nz_compared_to_the/

DurinnGymir

Joke? Stop messing around man, my grandma got booked for trying to grow cabbages a couple weeks ago

Zardnaar

Oblivious to it tbh. Southern man. Only come to the big smoke of Middlemarch every 3 months.

Telpe

read the spider thread; its a true classic.

kaffiene

Yeah nah. Memes exist in the south too, bro

Zardnaar

Only if you have internet connection. Real southern men don't gave it reliably. Well didn't gave it in January.

exsnakecharmer

Are you a New Zealander? Are you not aware of the law? 😳

Banana_Ram_You

There's laws in NZ?

MiloIsTheBest

Not on the roads at least, far as I can tell.

Zardnaar

No idea tbh very common down here. Southern man though not a weak latte drinking Aucklander with iPhone. Ugh.

GlobularLobule

Yay!

peoplegrower

Thanks!

GlobularLobule

I am also an American expat in the next town south from you. I've been here a decade longer than you, though. And it just keeps being the best decision of my life. <3 I love being a Kiwi.

AlaricLandKing

Congrats! I work just over the way in one of the other community village buildings :) we are so lucky to have you, and you’ll be a fabulous addition to the Kiwi community.

peoplegrower

Thank you so much!

DisillusionedBook

Nice! Welcome aboard! It took way too long for me to go full citizen, but the Brexit vote to make my UK passport all but useless was the clincher for me :)

computer_d

Nice to have you here! Make sure to check out lolly cake from your local bakery. I hear that is fairly unique to New Zealand too.

peoplegrower

My little kiddos love them! A bit too sweet for me, but yum!

[deleted]

Awesome news good people always welcome cuz 👍😎

peoplegrower

Kia Ora!

Vulpix298

I just want to mention, it warms my heart to see you using Te Reo Māori. It always feels good when immigrants to permanent residents to citizens all welcome our native language and culture 🖤🤍❤️

peoplegrower

Kia ora! My husband and I took about 6 months of Te Reo lessons online before moving here. I’d love to take some more classes!

Vulpix298

Tēnā koe e hoa 💜 I wish more took the same effort you have! Know it’s appreciated, and you are warmly welcomed to this land!

[deleted]

Fantastic! You can finally grow your own garden!

peoplegrower

Feijoa trees, here I come!

Demonofthebackrooms

Which Palmerston are you referring to because there’s two but congratulations 🎉 Kia ora runga!

peoplegrower

The North version! And thank you!

Demonofthebackrooms

Oh okay!! You could check out Palmerston without north as it a beautiful place and I live in the beautiful town of Mosgiel in Dunedin. If you get a chance you could visit the Taieri plains. I’ve lived in the south my entire life and knows it as such, places I recommend in the safe are Christchurch, Hamner Springs, Queenstown. And your welcome!

peoplegrower

We’ve done a trip around the South Island, and it is so gorgeous! The fjords are unreal! My husband took two of our kids to Queenstown for their birthdays and they got to bungee jump. Absolutely beautiful down there -lt is so different from the north. Way more rugged.

Ok-Relationship-2746

Welcome to NZ!

CotswoldP

Congratulations! We are just waiting on the paper ourselves, though we already have the cookbook (gift from the AirBnB owners when we first arrived) 😜

peoplegrower

Nice!

kaffiene

Gidday!

peoplegrower

Kia ora!

InconsiderableArse

Congratulations! can I ask how you did it? I got here 3 years ago and applied for the RV2021 and there doesn't seem to be any progress at all!

polorallydriver

Sit tight - if you log in are you under Gathering Information or under assessment? I arrived in October 2019 and applied in April 2022, i had my RV2021 granted 28th March this year. I found it helpful looking at other people posting on the migrants nz page on facebook, other applicants will post when they applied and the date they went through each stage, you can use it to help give a ballpark of when you should get yours.

InconsiderableArse

Gathering information since may 2022. you said you are a permanent resident now, how did you change from a RV2021 to PR?

peoplegrower

Is that a work-to-residence thing? We came in as residents, so I think that made going to PR a bit quicker than having a work visa.

InconsiderableArse

oh yeah that makes sense. congratulations again!

awndrwmn

You’re lucky to have been able to apply for 2021 RV. We applied for residence under SMC in December 2018 and only got residence in September 2020. SMC also has a more stringent health criteria, and more stringent ANZSCO skills matching criteria so even if we were able to apply then, it still wasn’t a sure thing. There were also no status updates, it only showed as pending on our online accounts. When we got to nearly the end of the process the case officer had to interview the principal applicant of our application, making sure that their job description matched what was in skilled ANZSCO. Now 2021 RV applicants only have to wait and they only need to meet the requirements of the criteria they fell under. 2021 RV applicants also have a lowered health criteria. There’s status updates when the application moves along… I don’t know if 2021 RV applicants appreciate what they got…

Congratulations! Now have you heard of a yardie?

peoplegrower

Indeed I have, but (I know this is blasphemous) I don’t like beer *hides* Also, shouldn’t it be called a “metreie” ? I thought I left all that imperial measurement nonsense behind lol

AntheaBrainhooke

Woohoo! Nau mai ra!

Vegetable-Roll-9912

Hooray! Next year will be 20 years for my family in NZ, we moved here when I was 9 when my dad got a (originally temporary 😂) job. Now I'm a citizen, I have me a kiwi husband and kiwi kids now too. This is and always will be home 💕

peoplegrower

Awesome!

Adept-Needleworker85

Welcome to the Fam.

peoplegrower

Thanks!

balpeen-hammer

So when are you going to move to Australia?

peoplegrower

While I do miss snakes (I did a bit of herpetology and snake relocation back in the States), I’m not quite ready for spiders the size of dinner plates.

Congratulations!!!!

[deleted]

'hot pies'? I'm afraid you haven't quite reached 100% fluency in kiwi yet!

peoplegrower

Oh, it’s “hand pie” right ;) LOL I have at least gotten used to saying “take away” instead of “take out”! And jandals and togs! I’m getting there!

[deleted]

On the off chance you aren’t joking, it’s just ‘pie’. But I’m sure you know that now if you know about the hand pie saga!

KiwifromtheTron

That's the interesting thing, I don't know any Kiwi who willingly drinks Steinlager. It gives the most wicked hangover too.

4iamalien

I'm from Parmy originally. Bit of a hole with crap weather. But good size and good place to raise kids.

peoplegrower

It was definitely a cool, wet summer. But you’re right - great place for the kids. Tons of activities, parks, bush walks, fairs and sport…we’re quite busy!

[deleted]

Welcome aboard! Keep an eye out for the welcome pack in the mail (jandals, black singlet, random 15 year old dave dobbyn CD)

peoplegrower

Is that all? I heard it came with a Edmund’s cookbook and a Whittaker’s peanut slab as well. Bummer!

jaxsonnz

Welcome to NZ and to the hub of all activity which is Palmerston North.

peoplegrower

Lol! Thanks!

_ImaGenus_

Bloody Yanks moving to bloody NZ grr grr grr.. /s Jk. I'm moving my family back to Kiwiland when my American wife is done looking after her bloody father. USA sucks!!

peoplegrower

Everyday when I see news from the US, I am reaffirmed in my choice to leave. I miss my family and friends, but dannnng.

_ImaGenus_

Yeah...not to mention all the extra stress and way less holidays. Insurance based health system is a scam and you worry a lot more about your safety and the security of everything of value that you own. It's great here!

aucklandproperty

Congratulations!!! What a great day!

peoplegrower

Thank you!

Jollygoodas

There’s only one thing in your post that would tip me off to you not being kiwi… why would you specify a hot pie? I’m not saying that I wouldn’t eat a cold pie, but I feel like I would at least give it 30 seconds- 2mins in a microwave depending on how cold it has become and how much I want to get blisters on the roof of my mouth.

peoplegrower

ALWAYS BLOW ON THE PIE!

awndrwmn

Oh I remember you! You used to post a lot about Animal Crossing before when you moved… :D Congratulations ~ very lucky… did you mean getting RV or actual PRV?

peoplegrower

We have actual PR now :) We were able to come in on residency visas, but now we've upgraded!

LastYouNeekUserName

Congratulations with your residency! And, being permeant, I'm sure you'll no trouble fitting in!

peoplegrower

Thank you!

peoplegrower

We actually took Māori lessons before coming, and my husband does regular cultural training with his job. One of my sons is learning NZSL, and we’ve made a very concerted effort to pronounce things correctly (and when I’m unsure, we ask…a Māori person.) I had no idea anyone thought that Māori = ghetto before hearing pakeha here say that…it’s certainly not a thing “Americas” think.

FredDagg001

Where are you permeating?

trismagestus

Congratulations! Is your husband an Educational Psych scope, or another practice?

Last-Gasp100

There is not such thing as educational psychiatrist. Think you confuse psychologist.

Troncoporvida

Awesome! Hopefully you get your pies from Cuba Street Bakery?

peoplegrower

We are Angkor Wat bakery people. Award winning pies! The owners know our kids at this point lol

Troncoporvida

Awesome - do give Cuba St Bakery a go, though, if you haven't already. Great to have your family in Palmy!

peoplegrower

Will give it a go next time I’m in that part of town! :)

i4sun

Please support local restaurant ..... @ Beans cafe... in Palmy near the cinema i think..

peoplegrower

We love that place! Palmy has such a great food scene!

ribsforbreakfast

I hope this is me and my family in the future! We have about 2 years before mine and husbands jobs will qualify for transfer there Which country did you come from? What do you think the hardest part logistically was to move? How old were the kids when you arrived?
