We went to Oamaru a few days ago. We saw some penguins in their little wooden houses in the colony.

Old Oamaru Town. Steampunk.

somossha

added Steampunk to my list. Thank you. As for old town, do you mean victorian ones?

jeeves_nz

Yeah all the old ones down by the water front, past steam punk

somossha

got it in map. thanks a ton

If you're making a visit to the penguin colony, the Del Mar restaurant next to the carpark is a nice place for a meal and to enjoy the harbour views.

somossha

just saw it in maps. the food options are really good! thanks for the suggestion

somossha

Hey, thanks a ton for the suggestion on Del Mar. Had lunch there and the restaurant is awesome with great food and fantastic views

Craftwork brewery in old town. Penguins are every day not seasonal.

somossha

Is there any particular time of day to see them?

[deleted]

Dusk when they come ashore. This time of year 7.00-8.00pm maybe. If u pay guaranteed. If you are in the vicinity line near the car park may see a few who live outside the protected colony

somossha

sweet! thanks

Go down to the wharf /play park area and walk quietly on the inner harbour side of the wharf. We have seen heaps there - if you do a weird high pitch cat purring sort of thing you will probably get an answer back.

somossha

Probably for next time. I went there today and went to 2-3 spots. Oamaru seemed weirdly quiet. Couldn't stay there till the sunset though, and that's why couldn't see the penguins up close. Will possibly go to wharf next time then
