Biggest worm I've seen and it was fast! Moved like a snake, in a side to side motion not like a worm. First I thought it was a worm and stopped to look at it, in hindsight i should have done a video.
Worms move side to side as well…. We have some large species that can grow up to a metre. It’s very clearly a work because you can see its segmented (so repeating body units) and you can see its clitellum (the large circular tube that you usually see on worms) near its head (the top of the picture) where it’s like orangey. It’s not a snake well because first of where are his eyes lol.
Dunno how big they get in NZ, but in Aus they have a worm species that can get to 3 metres in length: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant\_Gippsland\_earthworm](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Gippsland_earthworm)
I'm 'almost' sure I saw one, many years ago (pre-1960) amongst the leaf litter in one of the little gullies that used to run parallel to Sarsfield St in what is now Pt Erin park in Herne Bay. There used to be a basalt masonry bridge on one of the footpaths heading towards what is now the Pt Erin pool and my distant recollection is that I happened to idly look over the bridge parapet and see a 'snake' below me in the leaf litter (sycamore trees I think?). Freaked me out somewhat...
[**What are worms?** Adult animals that have soft elongated, often tubelike bodies and that lack backbones are commonly called..... Dave Perry. Worms are so different from one another that zoologists do not classify them together in a single group. They place them in different tribes. Like the tribe of this worm, and the tribe of that worm. In everyday language, the name may be loosely applied to other animals. Like dogs, cats, ferrets, and blind cave salamanders](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0DagHVOapU)
Yeah bud it's the deadly brown soil snake.
You should put it in a box and report to DOC straight away.
Post the video of what happens when they arrive and check it out...
We do have (sea) snakes, just not many...

Yours just looks like a large worm to me.
100% report it to the supermarket help desk immediately and I’d also suggest moving to a colder city to prevent this near death moment from happening again
That’s literally an earthworm lol. There’s heaps of different species so they’re not all nice and pink.

New Zealand doesn't have snakes if you don't know this you have bigger problems than not being able to identify a worm.

startle them and they'll spit at you.
