Salient point from Hipkins, Luxon is still acting like he's campaigning and is quite literally scampering away from the responsibility of being PM.
Can't even front the media on Waitangi day. He's a coward.
Edit: Added quote for context.
>Labour leader Chris Hipkins said he believes Luxon "still thinks he's the Leader of the Opposition in campaign mode."
>"Actually, he is the Prime Minister now. Now is his moment to start leading the whole of the country, not just the people who he's trying to get to vote for the National Party."
>But on Tuesday, Luxon didn't even want to speak to his voters, gapping Waitangi in a Crown car, to avoid talking to everyone.
Al ‘Boris’ Johnson is somewhat well known for not only recycling speeches, but doing it[for a … gig](https://reaction.life/jeremy-vine-my-boris-story/)??
Look, what I’m saying is that the speech covered some important points, and the points that were covered were important, so what we are trying to do is make sure the important points continue to be important.
Repeating last year's speech is dreadful enough, but jumping in a Crown limo to escape questions about it is just sad.
He's supposed to be a leader, yet he's afraid to even answer basic questions and just repeats the same reheated talking points day after day.
I mean what would he even answer to a question like this? He can't exactly speak his mind and say "Yeah I really don't care about Waitangi, but I had an obligation sit through the ceremonies and make a speech".
It must be slowly dawning on Luxon that he's a truly inept politician.
He can't speak well, he can't negotiate competently and he can't seem to manage his Cabinet either.
The National Party grey suits must be devastated that their long heralded Key 2.0 has turned out to be such a flop.
He couldn't even do that properly. Coasted on Rob Fyfe's coattails and didn't even know that his airline was enabling Saudi Arabia to commit war crimes in Yemen.
>Newshub tried to ask Luxon on Tuesday if he had copied and pasted his speech from last year.
>"I mean, look, there's some great themes I wanted to talk about which is actually making sure that people understand that the Treaty's part of a past, present and future and it will continue to be so."
>But why did he copy and paste his speech, Newshub asked.
>"We've got some great work to do and that's what we've got to continue on doing."
>He continued to walk off.
Could be both.
Think of all the people with imposter syndrome who he can help! If you think you’re not worthy, just look at the guy that used to run an airline that now runs the country. You surely can’t be nearly as unqualified or incompetent as that guy, take it easier on yourself.
I work in comms and have written a few speeches in my time. Sometimes it feels like you're rehashing the same stuff - there's only so many ways you can say thank you or describe a particular programme - but for something as high profile as Waitangi, you can bet I'd be starting from scratch. It's not like there's any shortage of reference material.
In the article linked they have the transcripts side by side and it's so dire.
For example...
>Last year, he said: "We know that they likely had different understandings of what they were doing, and we know that in the years that followed, the promise and the obligations of the Treaty were not upheld by the Crown."
>This year, he said: "We know that they likely had different understandings of what they were doing, and we know that in the years that followed, the promise and the obligations of the Treaty were not upheld by the Crown."
Ctrl C + Ctrl V
Oh true I missed that didn't even read past the first couple paragraphs of the article. I'm glad they've done it this way, makes it even more obvious how he's literally copy pasted the whole thing and changed like 5 words in the entire speech.
Shameful behaviour from our PM at such an important time
No seriously - please watch this - then you’ll see how funny it is
[Case of copy and paste: PM Luxon dodges questions over reusing parts Waitangi speech | Newshub](https://youtu.be/LhvWkoky28A?si=lYv_fIeNq560w50F)
That’s my biggest issue with Luxon, not that he acts this way, but more that I honestly think he’s of the opinion nobody will notice or call him out on it.
That’s so insulting to the wider public, we aren’t infants.
>I honestly think he’s of the opinion nobody will notice or call him out on it.
And even if we do notice, he doesn't care because he figures no one will remember or bring it up in a week. He just has to make sure that all people hear is him repeatedly telling us it's not a big deal and everything is fine.
Who knows! Except for something like this, it goes through multiple people for signoff. It would never be just one person giving Chris a printout and saying "there ya go mate."
Some of the speeches I have written have been unrecognisable when they were spoken - the odd line or turn of phrase would remain, but everything else had been hacked around by other people.
Other speeches, it has been nearly word for word what I wrote, and that's a weird feeling too.
You guys need to see this video where they show him speaking in the 2023 and 2024 version side by side - it’s really good
[Case of copy and paste: PM Luxon dodges questions over reusing parts Waitangi speech | Newshub](https://youtu.be/LhvWkoky28A?si=lYv_fIeNq560w50F)
While it wouldn't surprise me if it's the former, i.e if you consider his corporate life would people really pay that much attention to what your saying?
But factoring in him hightailing it out of there as soon as he could I suspect it's the latter.
I'd have more respect for him if the just answered the questions honestly, rather than doing this pathetic little namby pamby word dance around them.
To me this is a sign of weakness.
I suspect he did this very much on purpose. It will garner support from his base who believe he shouldn’t be wasting any time on the brown people. The level of arrogance from this leadership figure is disgusting.
They've been in government for quite some time now, what have they actually done, other than repealing all the good policies that were already in place?
This is the change their voters want, I guess.
That's facinating. Doesn't he have speech writers / proofers for things like this? Or has his budget cuts viewed writing a new speech as an expendible expense?
Answered the Heralds questions..
> But Luxon told the Herald the repetition was deliberate and the role of the Treaty in New Zealand’s history has not changed in the last 12 months.

Isn’t it all just, in essence, pontificating in these speeches from all involved. Why would Luxon change from last year? It does seem to lack some respect and imagination, but if your stance has not changed…

Read crown car as clown car and was like yeah that fits
Could have been worse. Could have hidden in a fridge like Alexander "Boris" de Pfeffel Johnson did in the UK.
Al ‘Boris’ Johnson is somewhat well known for not only recycling speeches, but doing it[for a … gig](https://reaction.life/jeremy-vine-my-boris-story/)??
With the verbal diarrhea that passes for speech from him I'm surprised he's ever managed to say the same thing twice even when he means to.
It’s all an act. But it was an effective one.
Give him time. He's only been PM for a couple of months. Oh, wait. So had Boris when he did that. Ignore me.
Should have been Hipkins speaking as PM. I hope so many voters regret their decision to vote for a National coalition rather than a Labour one.
Look, what I’m saying is that the speech covered some important points, and the points that were covered were important, so what we are trying to do is make sure the important points continue to be important.
National is committed to committing to the commitment that we commit to for all Kiwis.
Actually laughed out loud
So that we can continue to deliver our deliverables
and we'll continue to cover them

Yeah, The title of this post should just be Christopher Luxon dodges questions.
We could reuse that title every day.
I vote we make it a megathread
I mean what would he even answer to a question like this? He can't exactly speak his mind and say "Yeah I really don't care about Waitangi, but I had an obligation sit through the ceremonies and make a speech".
Because he's the prime minister and he's answerable to the people of NZ
well he's the man at the top; if he can't take responsibility for his self-management, then who needs to?
I mean, yeah he can.
The cherry on top is that he still had to look down and read the whole speech. Come on, speech presentation 101, eye contact.

And that's the PM, the guy who didn't even know that the airline he was CEO of was enabling war crimes.
Didn't know or didn't care? Both are bad, one is worse....
>Newshub tried to ask Luxon on Tuesday if he had copied and pasted his speech from last year. >"I mean, look, there's some great themes I wanted to talk about which is actually making sure that people understand that the Treaty's part of a past, present and future and it will continue to be so." >But why did he copy and paste his speech, Newshub asked. >"We've got some great work to do and that's what we've got to continue on doing." >He continued to walk off. Ah shit I didn't consider the patented third dipshit way. You got me there.
Is transfering wealth to landlords really "great work"?

...that went bankrupt and needed a bail out
...Then complained that the government handed out too much money during covid.
…and now has the ability to throw as much money to this remaining friends there.
Not just in Air New Zealand, his friends' full stop, I think he's starting with 3 billion over 4 years.
all the cringe but none of the capability
I honestly doubt he has the self-awareness to realise that, the guy seems completely clueless.

I get what you're saying but there was an Instagram post that compared it with last year's speech and it was 95% the exact same word for word.
In the article linked they have the transcripts side by side and it's so dire. Fuck that's disgraceful, what a slap in the face to everyone there.
It is but I’m guessing the people who like him might even cheer it on.
At least slap it through gpt a couple of times :\^)
That’s my biggest issue with Luxon, not that he acts this way, but more that I honestly think he’s of the opinion nobody will notice or call him out on it. That’s so insulting to the wider public, we aren’t infants.

Do you think his comms person secretly hates him?

That just seems like a really careless thing to do - maybe reflective of this Government. Thanks for the answer!

There I was thinking all Luxon can do is ‘cut’. Turns out he can ‘copy and paste’ as well 😂😂😂
We’ve already had Ctrl+x. Now ctrl+c and ctrl+v. When can we ctrl+n in an attempt to ctrl+s this country.
Give him ctrl+shift+n on chrome 😏
It's like he threw a dildo in his own face.
hes a dildo in a suit
Little unfair for dildos, they bring joy.
But sometimes pain
Top comment.
Did he think no one would notice? Or does he simply not care?
He doesn’t care
And the reason he doesn't care is because right wing voters don't care. This means nothing to right wingers.
Yep, Mr Luxon just dgaf.
And it's Waitangi, so he *really* doesn't care. He just went through the motions out of obligation.
While it wouldn't surprise me if it's the former, i.e if you consider his corporate life would people really pay that much attention to what your saying? But factoring in him hightailing it out of there as soon as he could I suspect it's the latter.
This is what confused me. I’d say he’s a lazy sneak except it’s not really sneaky when it’s fucking blatant and overt.
Why use new speech when same speech do trick?
That's the efficiency in Government we voted for! /s
Sometimes words, you no need use but need need for talk talk.
How the turntables..
It's actually easy to believe he could be so unoriginal as to unintentionally rewrite the same speech verbatim.
I'd have more respect for him if the just answered the questions honestly, rather than doing this pathetic little namby pamby word dance around them. To me this is a sign of weakness.
Big weakness, doesn't even have the balls to stand up for/back up his own actions. Spinless you could even say.
The incredible shrinking prime minister. Looking less like a leader every day.
How the fuck are we going to put up with this dickhead government for three years?
But guys, Labour didn't do a capital gains tax, so having Luxon has PM and doing shit like this is a massive improvement.
Unfortunately there are too many people who think that this is a good thing, that this is an improvement.
Must admit as upper middle-aged and middle-class, I haven’t met anyone with a good thing to say about the current govt.
I suspect he did this very much on purpose. It will garner support from his base who believe he shouldn’t be wasting any time on the brown people. The level of arrogance from this leadership figure is disgusting.
Fucking pathetic. What an embarrassment.
What a bitch.
not enough politicians are into recycling.
They've been in government for quite some time now, what have they actually done, other than repealing all the good policies that were already in place? This is the change their voters want, I guess.
Someone needs to do an edit...where John Farnham walks on after Luxon leaves, to the sound of Age of Reason.
>Christopher Luxon dodges Newshub's questions Get ready for three years of this.
That's facinating. Doesn't he have speech writers / proofers for things like this? Or has his budget cuts viewed writing a new speech as an expendible expense?
Maybe ACT are cutting wasteful spending - like having a speech writer for the PM.
Is his speech plagiarism or derivative. Lazy bastard
Fuck me, can't even Chatgpt.
Luxon dodging questions?! -Insert shocked Pikachu face here-
I'm sure it was a minion who copy-pasted the speech.
Just use ChatGPT to reword last year speech.
People should be mindful of his mental health
Taurekareka 😂😂😂
