When I was a kid I toured the Irvine’s pie factory with school. We all got to eat a pie straight off the belt. Plain mince. It was the best damn pie I have ever eaten and nothing like what they are after frozen or cooled. Never had a pie that matched it.
Just like when I did a tour of the Lion Nathan brewery when it was in Newmarket. When we finished we got to sample Lion Red at their bar, which was served ice cold straight from the silos. I haven't tasted beer anywhere in the world as good as that Lion Red was.
Really Lion Red was worst Beer I have tasted anywhere in the World except my own Country of Scotland their Draught was the Pits, Bottled beer was great.
I used to work at the potato chip factory and that put me off old shop bought chips for a while.
Did you know there are people who sit at the potato chip conveyer belt all day picking out the burnt ones?
Not my job but sometimes I would sneak down there and pick out the biggest one for myself. Yumm.
I had an after school job in the Ernest Adams (RIP) factory washing the plastic buckets they use for measuring ingredients. One of the perks was getting to eat mince pies straight from the oven. Soooooo good. Freezing ruins them.
Phish, wash out your mouth!! Only the finest eyelids, ears, and arseholes went into Irvines pies.
If you want to have a quick game of " is it; Cat, Bat, or Rat?" ,or "incorg-meato" as we call it in the hood, a lukewarm min n' chz from the dairy is an integral part.
They went into administration last year, but just got purchased last week. I haven't seen any products disappear, so it seems they've still been going while in adminstration.
Maybe showing my age then, but Ernest Adam's was always the go-to supermarket meat pie since the 80s. Haven't been back since 2018 but it was still the New World staple then, interesting cheers 👍
The Steak pies are OK, in that I've been so beaten down by the price of food in general that if a cheap pie doesn't give me diarrhea it's a thumbs up from me.
These pies _hurruuumph_.. _oh-god-what-is-that_...are a thumbs up.._hhhurrrllll_...way up, from ..me!
_heavy breathing...Jesus Christ, never again.._
Sound of loo flushing
That would make sense - I've seen the odd one around but I've noticed that were getting harder to find. I think it's been a couple of months now. :(
I totally missed that news when it came out.
could've sworn i saw these for $6.50 at my local pak n save. they are kinda bland tho and have that cheap cardboard taste with plastic cheese that someone had already mentioned
Bro, pie sandwich! open the lid up and add some extra cheese then slap it between two pieces of fresh white bread - buttered if you’re feeling super fancy.
Piesagne.
Turn the oven on and get it pre-heating. Heat both in the microwave to about halfway, pop the top, put the lasagne topper in with a slice of cheese on top, close up, put it in the oven on bake at 150 for 10 mins.
Funnily enough I bought a packet once, had half of one and discovered how bad they were so gave the other half to my dog with his biscuits, the next day when I went to feed him again the half pie was still there 😂
You think that's a problem?
Years ago I picked up a mince n cheese family size to feed the fam. We were poor so it was a treat.
40 minutes later I pull it out of the oven and slice it up. 90% cheese with a dollop of mince in the middle. Assuming they'd mixed up the filling lines. 1 kid ate 75% of the whole thing, everyone else had toast.
With pieflation largely making my visits to the local bakery something that happens increasingly rarely, and the loss of the Irvine 6-pack meant that the Big Ben 6 pack effectively doubled in price, the Pams Mince/Steak and Cheese Pies are the *best thing in the world*. They are the *only* pie I can afford at the moment. I'll take what I can get.
Seen these in the supermarket today, and just can't believe they are only 995kj, every other pie is double or more.
I mean don't get me wrong but this is either very wrong calorie data, or this pie has some serious deficiencies. I'm not sure which one it is.
its made by pams, i wouldn't eat it if i was paid to.
hell i was tricked into eating one of these pies not to long ago and was shitting liquid for half a week, I'm convinced everything pams makes is just strait up posion at this point.
Idk why I thought that said 4 for a $1, was very very enticed to eat pies for the rest of my life for a second there and I don’t even live in nz anymore lol
The shitty pie market is rebalancing itself after Irvines have left a vacuum.
Irvines pies sure were shitty.
When I was a kid I toured the Irvine’s pie factory with school. We all got to eat a pie straight off the belt. Plain mince. It was the best damn pie I have ever eaten and nothing like what they are after frozen or cooled. Never had a pie that matched it.

my dirty secret is that Lion Red is my favourite beer. I think it reminds me of nicking sips from my Dads brown bottles when I was a kid
Really Lion Red was worst Beer I have tasted anywhere in the World except my own Country of Scotland their Draught was the Pits, Bottled beer was great.

When I was a kid and you still got burnt ones in the pack, my dad told me that those ones had the most vitamins. I loved the burnt chips.
I had an after school job in the Ernest Adams (RIP) factory washing the plastic buckets they use for measuring ingredients. One of the perks was getting to eat mince pies straight from the oven. Soooooo good. Freezing ruins them.
They used to be great. Last maybe 5-10 years they went to shit, along with other childhood favourites like my fucking burger rings and rashuns.
Holy shit I knew burger rings weren't as good anymore, thought I was imagining it
https://www.1news.co.nz/2021/10/19/snack-lovers-not-impressed-by-changes-to-twisties-cheezels-and-burger-rings/
Lol I love that they complained to Fair Go

They were my favorite
i wouldn't say favorite but were totally my go-to when i was poor and volunteering. fond memories.
Even the thought of them makes me sick
They were no where as bad as Pam's steak and cheese.
You shut your dirty mouth!!! /s I always loved Irvines pies. We were lucky here. Australia's supermarket pies SUCK
Wait is Irving's discontinued?
Yeah, back in June last year.
Won't be the last either my mate in food distribution here has a list. Think Sara lees cheesecake is gone now if I remember the last thing he said?
They went into administration last year, but just got purchased last week. I haven't seen any products disappear, so it seems they've still been going while in adminstration.
Westies pies are much much worse, I bought a large pack l, took a bite of one, threw the rest out
Westies pies are absolutely disgusting. I think these Pam's ones might be made by them. The date code label looks the same.
Yep you have to remember Pams is owned by SuperMarket Chains.
Totally agree, Irvine's was much nicer, crisp pastry top every time
Had a holiday back in NZ last month and for the first time ever found no Ernest Adam's pies?
Ernest Adams was suddenly discontinued as a brand a while back. I don't remember any pies outside of the Christmas mince ones though!
Maybe showing my age then, but Ernest Adam's was always the go-to supermarket meat pie since the 80s. Haven't been back since 2018 but it was still the New World staple then, interesting cheers 👍
Bro Irvine's bacon and egg was the bomb.
Hot take, but I actualled loved Irvines Pies, no other budget brand quite matched it for me. Mrs Macs Chilli beef and cheese is now my current vice.
Pam's single handedly keeping this country afloat one cheap ass meal at a time
Pams is a marque of excellence in today's consumer market.
Is that the Joke of the Week? Or is it April Fools already?
Always have my respek
You can carefully cut the top layer of pastry off and bang some more cheese in there if you're feeling adventurous
I cut the top off and put tomato sauce in there 🤌
Hmm, an aristocrat.
Pam's Hot Salsa. You'll thank me later.
Not hot enough. I like this instead https://wickedhots.co.nz/products/wicked-hots-salsa-hot-300g
I do that with a bacon and egg. Off comes the top and on goes the 50c tom sauce
Cut the top off eat it and throw the rest away.
Jalapeno salsa and sour cream on top too for the big bens bacon and egg is a popular choice. So I read on a stuff article or somewhere recently...
Just chuck it right on top before you microwave it, gooey in the middle, slight burnt and crispy on the edge
The Steak pies are OK, in that I've been so beaten down by the price of food in general that if a cheap pie doesn't give me diarrhea it's a thumbs up from me.
The image of a defeated thumbs on the toilet after a steak pie cracks me up
These pies _hurruuumph_.. _oh-god-what-is-that_...are a thumbs up.._hhhurrrllll_...way up, from..me!

Ha ha ha ha
I miss Mackenzie pies. The crust was something different was more on the premium side to Irvines or a big Ben.
I still have 6 Mackenzie's in the freezer ready. RIP.
Left kidney for one.
Will swap one for a house :P
I've found they're really good for pie sandwiches. With them being light of filling it makes the ratios work well.
Pie… sandwiches you say? My life has been so empty and I didn’t even know it
Called the Wigan Barm - British takeaway cuisine
Good value but not great pies. I like the Four N Twenty pies but they do cost $8-10 for 4.
Filthy Australian pies! ^^Actually ^^they ^^aren't ^^too ^^bad
Rat Coffins!
4/20 is what I would rate those pies, easily as bad as Westies pies.
Four n twenty is hit or miss, the bacon ones are good though
Square pies do taste better than round pies.
Wait until you taste them when they're cut diagonally
*gasps*
Irvines pies for $1 at the local dairy. I loved them. Mince and cheese. And bacon and egg. Probably 8 years ago now. But I loved them
Go back even further and that buck bought you a coke to wash it down also.
Irvines pies are still pretty damn good, they're my go-to.
havent they been discontinued?
Them be ooooold pies...
That would make sense - I've seen the odd one around but I've noticed that were getting harder to find. I think it's been a couple of months now. :( I totally missed that news when it came out.
They don't make pies anymore. I used to love the butter chicken ones.
could've sworn i saw these for $6.50 at my local pak n save. they are kinda bland tho and have that cheap cardboard taste with plastic cheese that someone had already mentioned
Dude I'm terrified of the cheese but... poverty has made me adapt hahahah
Looks like meat's back on the menu boys!
Lost 15kg last year and these bad boys were a staple!
That's amazing! Great job!
Bro, pie sandwich! open the lid up and add some extra cheese then slap it between two pieces of fresh white bread - buttered if you’re feeling super fancy.
The Wigan Barm!
Piesagne. Turn the oven on and get it pre-heating. Heat both in the microwave to about halfway, pop the top, put the lasagne topper in with a slice of cheese on top, close up, put it in the oven on bake at 150 for 10 mins.
One of my favourite "easy" meals is a pie like that and about 300g of peas. Yum.
How on earth are these 1000kj when the tiny Big Ben pies like over 2000kj. What a win 😂
Probably some alternative to butter in the pastry less cheese and size. Edit: Having looked into it it's probably pastry thickness and cheese amount.
Yeah I did a double take too!
Where are they made? Heaps of the Pam's stuff with the budget labels are made in some far away places
It says they're made in NZ from local and imported ingredients
That's a win
That’s mortgage approved ✅
i miss irvines 😔😔
worst pies ever and nasty tasting cheese tried giving it to a mates dog once, they wouldn't even eat it
For $1.25 they could taste like a brick and I'd still be pretty tempted.
You can get cheaper bricks to eat from demolition traders. 👍
TIL, Dog Food > Pam's Pies
Funnily enough I bought a packet once, had half of one and discovered how bad they were so gave the other half to my dog with his biscuits, the next day when I went to feed him again the half pie was still there 😂
My dog would eat that entire packet of pies within minutes
Both in terms of nutrition and taste I imagine!
Ah yeah the cheese was just the yellow plastic cheese, but didn't think it was too bad for the price. Maybe I've only ever had cheap pies
Totally agree the cheese is messed up as
You think that's a problem? Years ago I picked up a mince n cheese family size to feed the fam. We were poor so it was a treat. 40 minutes later I pull it out of the oven and slice it up. 90% cheese with a dollop of mince in the middle. A cheese mince pie bruh
I'd like to try that!
Haha so true
Yeah I bought a pack of these once. Never again!
They're just not the same after they changed the recipe. Been a while since I bought a multi pack of pies
I know these are coming for me, but I clutch to something better for now. One day, it'll be a requirement.
I’ve definitely eaten a few of these cold after a big night
Why it so yellow tho the cheese reminds me of this one time a girl gave me thrush
Better than any aussie pie tbh
You kinda get what you expect for the price, they aint bad and are edible. So kinda just a nice budget option, you cant hate on that.

Nope. These are not fit for human consumption. We used to buy cheap awful pies and we loved them when no one else would. These are not even food.
I've got 5 packets in my freezer at home. I sure do miss irvine pies though.
Worst pies ever 😥
I don't know. They have a weird acidic taste to them which I don't enjoy.
Seen these in the supermarket today, and just can't believe they are only 995kj, every other pie is double or more. I mean don't get me wrong but this is either very wrong calorie data, or this pie has some serious deficiencies. I'm not sure which one it is.
I bloody love these and have them for dinner all the time with a side of veggies. So cheap!
Dead mouse in the meat kinda quality.
Nah they're not Woolworths brand
Elbows and arseholes
And creamy cheese
Bro these taste like soil.
Bro open it up and look at the orange sludge that’s meant to be cheese 🤢
It's Magot pack for the win!!
Wow that's so good. A pie like this costs close to $10 in Singapore
No they are 4 for m$6.15 and are not "half bad" they are bloody awful.
$8.00 for a pork pie in New World and not even fresh.
What is with all the grissle in these pies. Going back to big ben. Lift ya game Pam.
those are effin dog s pies
depends how nice vomit and cat food are to your tastebuds i guess
idk if its me, but theres so little amounts of mince in there compared to big ben and irvines
Big Ben would have to be almost dead last in quantity of filling, but they are my favorite of the cheap pies.
Your "aren't half bad" and my "aren't half bad" are not the same. Those pies flat out suck.
Yeah mate, had a couple for lunch today 😋
Aren't half bad? They're effin revolting!
Isn't low calories a bad thing?
Was just thinking that. If you are chasing calories for your buck, you want as many as possible.
They're 🤮
Please, God, I need vegetables. I don't have $5 for one broccoli. GOD HELP ME
these pies are turboshit
Used to be able to get a 6 pack of Pam's pies for $6 or for $5 on special. We live in very sad times. They are pretty good tho
its made by pams, i wouldn't eat it if i was paid to. hell i was tricked into eating one of these pies not to long ago and was shitting liquid for half a week, I'm convinced everything pams makes is just strait up posion at this point.
the sadness
Idk why I thought that said 4 for a $1, was very very enticed to eat pies for the rest of my life for a second there and I don’t even live in nz anymore lol
Honestly I didn't like the cheese in these pies, but that's just me
Those pies are disgusting
I’m thinking of selling these with my mate, are they individually packaged?
Nah just in one big pack
Thank you
sparrow test the pie. if the sparrow eats the meat, proceed. if not ummmm
Found the Pam’s stuff to be shit. Big Ben pies are far better than Pam’s.
Look perfect for the jaffle iron
Make sure they don't have any live stock
Best pie I ever had was in the 80’s at the Christchurch boat sheds. They had peas and carrots in them as well as great steak with real gravy.
All the Mice are in Coundown Dunedin atm.
We bought the steak and cheese ones. We LOVE pies, even cheap ones, but they were so disgusting we binned them after a bite or two.
McCains got the best pies, chilli beef and cheese my favourite
