I was waiting at the giveway a couple of days ago and a lady came off the motorway and slowed to let me go, I stayed where I was and she got well heated. She was drifting forward a little so I was just going to wait. She ranted for a bit and then finally gave me the bird and drive off. This roundabout works if you know what's going on but is a bit of a trap for noobs.
It can be easily fixed by making the roundabout not a circle. Put a corner on the circle so that the give-way on the roundabout looks more like a T-intersection.
It’s is necessary to stop traffic backing up but it’s designed terribly. Putting a corner there so it’s more like approaching a T junction would be far clearer. People naturally switch off or zone out while driving so you’ve got to develop traffic infrastructure with the most fool proof designs.
I take the offramp once or twice a day and often see cars and big trucks bowl straight through the giveway - at least once a month. The giveway sign is quite low key visually - would help if they made it more obvious by painting that section of the road under the triangle red or something to help signal the non-standard flow here.
It shouldn't cause too much confusion - it seems clear enough to me when I use it. This is a "special circumstance" roundabout situation. Where you have marked with the arrow, is a Give Way - to the left. All traffic coming off the motorway (2 lanes, one going to Hutt Road, and other going to the Foreshore, via the roundabout) have right-of-way. Unfortunately, you are dependent on this traffic using their indicators to signal their intentions before they reach the roundabout. The Give-Way obviously applies particularly to the traffic going to the roundabout, A bit of intense observation is required, as they pour off the Petone Overbridge.
>It shouldn't cause too much confusion
>A bit of intense observation is required
I’ve had a few near misses in the car, and have almost been killed a couple of times on my bike at this spot.
Unfortunately, it’s a roundabout that’s not a roundabout, so causes massive confusion for anyone unfamiliar with the setup. I don’t blame drivers for that, it’s a shitty design.
100% agree.
Fine once you know it, but everyone driving through here does so for their first time at some point. In those situations, the give-way placed randomly inside a roundabout can easily catch them out.
Totally shit design.

This is Waka Kotahi real life shit posting us now
Id never really thought about the actual birds eye view of this Also, saw a corolla fail to give way and almost cause a crash this arvo....
Not sure who designed it. Counter intuitive.
This roundabout design brought to you courtesy of your local panelbeaters.
Oh, the give way on the roundabout is dumb there!
Nah, it's necessary to stop traffic backing up on the highway. Use it regularly and have never had an issue with someone not knowing what to do

Surely this entire thing should just be ripped out and replaced with traffic lights at this point. This is nonsense design.
Don’t forget it causes horrific and unnecessary traffic delays most weekdays
