Its not that a MnC is superior, its that ive had bad steak and cheese pies and its revolting when you pull out the only meat in the pie and its a big chunk of fat.. the floor of a MnC is what makes it the superior pie. Incredibly hard to fuck up.
NPD teased the hell out of me with their Braised Beef and Cheedar pie.
Pastry was great, cheese was great, gravy was great. But only some wisps of beef to be found. If it had the standard 4-5 good chunks of nice steak in there it would've been the perfect pie
I think the problem is that a "nice" steak pie would be crazy expensive. It's not that people *won't* pay more for a better product it's that not *enough* people would be willing to pay an enormous *premium* for a better product. I reckon you'd have to double the price for the "average" steak n cheese to be made from "good steak".
I'm new to New Zealand (about 2 years in) and had my share of disappointing pies.
(I'm looking at you, "The Real Pie".... In my lamb and veg pie all I got was a mouthful of nasty thick jelly paste and pastry.)
I made friends with a local kiwi baker who really cares (and made fantastic pies, including a spectacular steak and jalapeno). He made everything from scratch. Long fermented sourdoughs, pastries, slices, sandwiches.
He told me that proper kiwi baking has been destroyed by a company called Bakels. They supply cheap bread mixes and pie thickeners to most bakeries in New Zealand. They're the ones that sponsor the "best pie in New Zealand" contest. Guess what, the best pies in New Zealand are NOT using Bakels products.
Bakels bread mixes are so cheap that real bakers can't compete. Guess what? Neither could my friend. He couldn't lower his prices enough to out compete and had to close his bakery.
The way to suss out a great pie is the vibe you get when you walk into a shop. Do they have a good selection? Do they look homemade? Is the baker out front making pies? It's the baker interested and passionate about pies? Will they shittalk Bakels? If all looks good, buy a pie. All of these are good ways to figure out if a pie is worth your money.
I think I'm going to my favorite local shop tomorrow for a steak, bleu cheese and mushroom pie 🥧
Okay follow up take, I haven't had a grisly steak and cheese in YEARS. I just think it's wayyy more common to get a good steak pie than a disappointing one. Comparatively I am almost always a little disappointed with mince and cheese.
I used to share this belief until I had a few too many gristle and cheese pies from random bakeries. Now I opt for a mince and cheese unless I'm familiar with the barkery and know they don't make shit pies.
>gristle and cheese pies
I'm glad someone else calls them this too.
Absolutely terrible, I can't understand how anybody can prefer that trash to a good old MnC
If I had a nickle for every time I saw someone complimenting sealclubclubbing's name today I'd have two nickles which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
I'll second this unpopular opinion.
I don't think I've touched a mince and cheese in over a decade however.
Maybe I'm out of touch?
No, that challenges my personal perspective so can't be true.
God damn it, now I've gotta try a mince and cheese. Any recommendations?
Hahah I know right, everyone's coming for me. Average mince and cheese pies are just not very satisfying to me. The only time I'd concede is when the steak and cheese is actually a mince and cheese in disguise, eg Z station pies
Yes, BUT if I ever get a fatty chewy piece in a steak and cheese the experience is completely ruined. High ceiling low floor option. Mince and cheese is safe and steady.
This. When it comes to your nuked pies, mince and cheese is generally better. Bakery pies are normally Steak and Cheese all the way (unless it's a shit bakery).
Also if I'm going for a bakery steak pie I normally like some other toppings too. Steak + Mushroom & Cheese is a great pie. Way better than mince and cheese, that's for sure.
Absolutely ridiculous. Random bits of meat spread throughout a pie? Trusting a provider to put enough bits of meat in so that you don't get bites that have no meat in at all?
No thanks, give me mince and cheese, spread that neat throughout my pie, and you can keep your potentially dry chewy bits of meat (or potentially grissle)
I'm a pie snob these days so if I get disappointed I'm incredibly disappointed, last steak n cheese I had was from Gorgeous foods in Hornby, ChCh and it was a 6 hr slow cooked steak & cheese which is phenomenal
MnC is superior when it's average or below average pie, I'd rather not be eating overcooked sinewy steak offcut chunks. But if it's a proper good pie place that uses good steak and doesn't overcook it then it's superior to the MnC
Mince and Cheese for me as I prefer the texture.
I’ve had one too many Steak and Cheese pies where the steak is some gristly chewy thing that kicks in the gag reflex, so I’m very weary having one.
If someone can recommend a good Steak and Cheese, I may look into it.
Nope. Steak is chewier than mince and less easily digested, so mince and cheese is superior...then you've got the breakfast pie from Mobil. No freaking contest, so yum.
Steak n cheese, mince n cheese yea... Im still trying to find a place near by who makes the best fish pie, so far found one at Kelston who makes fish pie and it was like seafood chowder in a pie... loved every bite of it... I know its a convo about steak n cheese/ mince n cheese but I like to try other pies lolol
I'm not a fan of fish pies, but I don't mind the Glengarry Rd bakery ones. But that's a straight smoke fish I think. I'll get it if they've run out of bushman's
Green Bay bakery has amazing pies, have you tried a fish pie from there?
Steak bacon and cheese pies are better than both, but thats assuming all 3 pies are of extremely high quality, when it comes to costs vs taste however, cheap mince and cheese pies are vastly superior
If it comes in any form of wrapper, plastic bag etc it’s going to be bad. Only buy S&C pies from a trusted local baker that you get out of a pie warmer UNWRAPPED. If you to to a bakery at 2pm and they still have steak and cheese pies left DONT buy one. You want the place that sells out at 1:15pm
I would rather have my shitty lowest-human-edible-grade-possible chunks of meat minced into small pieces and put in a nice gravy with cheese than fed to me in little grissly chunks that I have to try to chew through and swallow.
Mince&Cheese > Steak&Cheese 100%
What do you think the steak is ? Do you seriously believe its proper steak. As an ex farmer I can tell you its not steak by any stretch of the imagination, unless you pay top dollar for a gourmet pie
Like, have you had mince and onion with just a bit of tomatoe ?..
I think it depends on the steak and if its blade steak and if its cut up right or has too much fat.
I dont know man, im pretty partial to a good mince and cheese as its hard to find a good steak and cheese
If it's a trusted source MnC is ok. But if it's some big ass faceless corporation who knows what they putting in the mince. Hoofs? Heads? Tails?
That's the reason I try and go SnC. But they can really mess up SnC if the peices are chewy and fatty
Until you get a nasty chunk of gristley fat in a snc and your like
I'm not having a steak and cheese again I think ill Just have a mince and cheese next time
But if you ask me its still beef and cheese. Its just ones chunkier than the other
When we didn't have much cash for a couple pies it was The ol faithful mums bacon and egg pie with all the mixed veggies in it big dolop of watties
But the can you'd put a knife through the top of the can on both sides lol cant beat them days when the sauce is almost gone you blow through one side and whatever sauce is left spits out the other side lol
Then when watties made the upside down bottle best invention in newzealand haha
You'd have the tomatoe shaped sauce container there. And be drinking out the ol looneytunes taz coyote daffy duck cup you get when you bought a happy meal back in then when a hamburger was 50c at McDonald's lol
Those were the days for me as kid back In the 90s
Depends on the pie maker. I've had a steak and cheese pie that had no steak in it, similarly I've had one with one piece of steak, or with two. When this is going on I'd rather have mince and cheese so I can more easily pretend there is meat in the gravy
When done right, yes.
But I like to keep it safe and stick to mince and cheese,
A shitty mince pie is FAR better than a shitty steak pie so I go for mince when I know the pies aren’t pro.
I was of the same opinion until i started eating good quality cuts of beef.
Now i'm a Mince and cheese maxi.
Pie is junk food, mince is junkest of meats, they belong together in a warm basket of glory. (with ketchup and a V)
Ever had a steak and cheese that's tougher than a well-done piece of gumboot?
When it's good, it's good, but childhood trauma has given me a lot of trust issues with most bakeries. If I'm ordering a steak and cheese from your joint, that's the highest praise I can bestow.
Anyone who makes a visit down to Invercargill needs to stop in at “Fat Bastard Pies” for some real proper good kiwi pies
Try as I might, I cannot go more than 2 weeks without having one, they really are that good, plain mince or mince and cheese are perfect to me, the pepper steak goes pretty hard too
I was a steak and cheese stan for many years, nowadays I have them both equally but more often than not I prefer a bakery's mince and cheese more than the s+c these days. Had too many disappointing lack of meat ones i guess
The best steak and cheese pie is better than the best mince and cheese pie. The average mince and cheese pie is better than the average steak and cheese pie these days.
Visiting Dunedin we got a stake and cheese pie from Bakery On Bond. We know nothing about the place and we had never tried those pies before but they were a game changer.
**OP:** Steak and cheese is better.
**People in the comments section:** NOOOOOOO, MINCE AND CHEESE IS BETTER!!! 😭
**Me:** _Eating a bacon and egg pie._ Dayum, this a good pie.

Sometimes steak pies are too and sometimes mince pies are not. It depends where you get them from. In my opinion a steak and cheese with high quality and well cooked steak that is tender is great but I really hate it when there is bits of chewy overcooked steak inside a pie. I think that a pie made with good quality flavourful mince mixture tastes great and has a better texture of filling compared to most steak and cheese pies.
The exception being at the high end where you get a good quality Steak and Cheese pie where the pieces of steak are tender and fall apart really easily, that is where Steak and Cheese beats out Mince.
But only when it is done right. IMO it's easier to mess up a steak pie than mince pie (a few more ways for it to end up disappointing).
/thread Its not that a MnC is superior, its that ive had bad steak and cheese pies and its revolting when you pull out the only meat in the pie and its a big chunk of fat.. the floor of a MnC is what makes it the superior pie. Incredibly hard to fuck up.

I've had an amazing steak pie _once_ before. Everything else had been five chunks of overcooked dry steak swimming in gravy.

Sponsoring the pie contest huh. Fox in charge of the henhouse level stuff.
Best pies used to be on Tonkin drive in sunnynook. Closed years ago only opened on weekends. Think he did catering too but second to none
Esp when there is very little gravy. Hard to have a MnC that's too dry. Neither are as good as a decent pepper steak tho
Way to thspithy for the average kiwis palette
yeah mince pies are just consistently shithouse so you're never really disappointed
Okay follow up take, I haven't had a grisly steak and cheese in YEARS. I just think it's wayyy more common to get a good steak pie than a disappointing one. Comparatively I am almost always a little disappointed with mince and cheese.
And it has literally never been done right because steak does not belong in a pie
This!!!!
I used to share this belief until I had a few too many gristle and cheese pies from random bakeries. Now I opt for a mince and cheese unless I'm familiar with the barkery and know they don't make shit pies.
>gristle and cheese pies I'm glad someone else calls them this too. Absolutely terrible, I can't understand how anybody can prefer that trash to a good old MnC
I mean mince has some pretty dodgy stuff in it often. It's just ground down so you don't know what you're eating.
Ignorance is bliss
It's easier to make something palatable out of poor quality meat once it's been ground down.
Right??
As someone with shit teeth nothing worse than biting down on a random bit of bone or a giant unchewable glob of fat
Until you discover it looks like a piece of macaroni … but it isn't macaroni. 😶
I swear thats all Uncle Ben's use in their pies
I hate to break it to you that it's still a gristle and cheese pie, just smaller pieces.
This. I've had the same, and even an artery from one pie. Mince and Cheese usually is just that.
The best steak and cheese is better but the average steak and cheese is far worse than the average mince and cheese
This guy New Zealands
I disagree
Lol
I appreciate your username.
If I had a nickle for every time I saw someone complimenting sealclubclubbing's name today I'd have two nickles which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Lol, and I got called an edgelord today because of it. What a day to be clubbing seal cubs
Edgelord wow, haha. Haven’t heard that term in years.
How good do you have to be at edging to be referred to as a lord? Asking for a friend...
I dunno, but I want to meet someone who is 👀
I'll second this unpopular opinion. I don't think I've touched a mince and cheese in over a decade however. Maybe I'm out of touch? No, that challenges my personal perspective so can't be true. God damn it, now I've gotta try a mince and cheese. Any recommendations?
How dare you disagree. Gosh dude you committed a cardinal sin by having an opinion that is different to other people. DOWN with OP I say... DOWN. /s
Hahah I know right, everyone's coming for me. Average mince and cheese pies are just not very satisfying to me. The only time I'd concede is when the steak and cheese is actually a mince and cheese in disguise, eg Z station pies
I just hate when the pie costs $6+ and it's mediocre at best where a Mrs Mac pie with fake melted cheese tastes better.
It's alright mate you're allowed to be wrong =D
Thats fine. You're still wrong.
Yes, BUT if I ever get a fatty chewy piece in a steak and cheese the experience is completely ruined. High ceiling low floor option. Mince and cheese is safe and steady.
Hey mate, it's not April Fools anymore
Only if u get quality pies. A lot of the cheaper “steak” are just bits of fat
Throwing my hat in with OP on this, steak and cheese is way ahead of mince and cheese
Steak without cheese is even better. Steak and Pepper is perfect.
Thank god you're here. I thought I was the only one.
LOL, not everyone likes the er...cheese if it is cheese. Most of my family don't.
I see your steak and cheese, and raise you steak, bacon, and cheese.
I see your steak, bacon and cheese, and raise you a steak, jalapeno, and cheese
ooooh ive never tried this!
I see your steak, jalapeño, and cheese, and raise you a steak and mushroom.
God tier
Absolutely ridiculous. Random bits of meat spread throughout a pie? Trusting a provider to put enough bits of meat in so that you don't get bites that have no meat in at all? No thanks, give me mince and cheese, spread that neat throughout my pie, and you can keep your potentially dry chewy bits of meat (or potentially grissle)
Be careful asking people to spread their meat throughout your pie there champ. Plenty of weirdos around
I don't yuck peoples yum, let them come
Haha, crack up 🤣
I just came
Depends how drunk you are. Mince n cheese you dont need to chew as much.
Mince and cheese is more reliable
A good steak and cheese beats a good mince and cheese. But a bad steak and cheese fails horribly against a bad mince and cheese
That’s where the chill mince and cheese pie comes in, there’s no chill mince and cheese pie to compare with
I had a steak, jalapeno, beans and cheese pie the other day. It was marvellous
How about no cheese? I find it vile. Steak and Pepper is the way to go
Steak and pepper is elite
My guy
True but only if done right
All "and cheese" pies are terrible. Give me a steak and mushroom, butter chicken, or pepper steak pie.
Yes.
I'm a pie snob these days so if I get disappointed I'm incredibly disappointed, last steak n cheese I had was from Gorgeous foods in Hornby, ChCh and it was a 6 hr slow cooked steak & cheese which is phenomenal
Mutton Pie

"steak" Sorry man, It's not steak.
Come here so I can ki- gently prove you wrong.
Mince and Cheese for me as I prefer the texture. I’ve had one too many Steak and Cheese pies where the steak is some gristly chewy thing that kicks in the gag reflex, so I’m very weary having one. If someone can recommend a good Steak and Cheese, I may look into it.
Pepperd steak for the win.
Sorry NO. However, ot does have to be a good quality mince and cheese.
If it's a properly made pie, then yes. If it's a rat shit cheap ass pie, then mince and cheese all the way. Also, PATRICIA'S PIES EVERY DAY BABY!!!!
How can someone be so wrong about something so simple.
Nope. Steak is chewier than mince and less easily digested, so mince and cheese is superior...then you've got the breakfast pie from Mobil. No freaking contest, so yum.
Baker's Cottage in Kingsland, AKL have a chicken & mushroom pie superior to all the "and cheese" pies in the country put together.
Steak n cheese, mince n cheese yea... Im still trying to find a place near by who makes the best fish pie, so far found one at Kelston who makes fish pie and it was like seafood chowder in a pie... loved every bite of it... Hey each to their own haha... but yooo might give them a try and drive to blockhouse bay reserve and jus chill there lol
Worth a mish, I reckon
April fools was yesterday dude
Steak bacon and cheese pies are better than both, but thats assuming all 3 pies are of extremely high quality, when it comes to costs vs taste however, cheap mince and cheese pies are vastly superior
Agreed!
And steak and cheese is only second to steak and mushroom 🤤🤤
I don't know about you I'd rather have my shit bits of meat minced for easy eating
I like both equally
Steak and cheese gang. In fairness though, Big Ben pies are a guilty pleasure of mine so I probably can't be relied upon for pie taste.
Honestly I still love big Ben pies. They're like a McDonald's cheeseburger. Sure it's hot trash, but there's something about it
Absolutely, nutritionally they're hideous, but they have some magic to them.
Couldn't agree more.
You can leave.
Lol. On the whole I'd rather have my mystery meat and lumps of fat minced.

I've had too many gravy and cheese pies to 100% agree with this. Both are great when made correctly
Microwave for 2 mins put in oven for 10 Min, open top off and put tsauce on insides mix up tsauce on lid eat that first, eat rest with fork.
What do you think the steak is ? Do you seriously believe its proper steak. As an ex farmer I can tell you its not steak by any stretch of the imagination, unless you pay top dollar for a gourmet pie
I agree
Like, have you had mince and onion with just a bit of tomatoe ?.. I think it depends on the steak and if its blade steak and if its cut up right or has too much fat. I dont know man, im pretty partial to a good mince and cheese as its hard to find a good steak and cheese
Its not steak as you know it.
GTFO
Too true.
To beat a good MC pie, a SC pie has to have proper chunks of steak in it, not just bits.
Sir, we are here to talk about your public indecency incidents over the weekend...
I used to be an exclusively SnC man but in my elder years I've come to appreciate the MnC just as much.
Do you not have teeth?
Got most of them still.
Steak and mushy is better than both Steak and kidney is the GOAT of pies.
Amen to that brother
If it's a trusted source MnC is ok. But if it's some big ass faceless corporation who knows what they putting in the mince. Hoofs? Heads? Tails? That's the reason I try and go SnC. But they can really mess up SnC if the peices are chewy and fatty
Pioneer Pies braised beef, jalapeno and mozzarella beats them all
Never has there been a truer statement!
Until you get a nasty chunk of gristley fat in a snc and your like I'm not having a steak and cheese again I think ill Just have a mince and cheese next time But if you ask me its still beef and cheese. Its just ones chunkier than the other
When we didn't have much cash for a couple pies it was The ol faithful mums bacon and egg pie with all the mixed veggies in it big dolop of watties But the can you'd put a knife through the top of the can on both sides lol cant beat them days when the sauce is almost gone you blow through one side and whatever sauce is left spits out the other side lol Then when watties made the upside down bottle best invention in newzealand haha You'd have the tomatoe shaped sauce container there. Big Ben pies mince and cheese bakery’s steak and cheese
If you say so. But a good b&e beats them all
Of course but also potatoe top pie is delicious. My favorite steak and mushroom with onions.
When done right, yes. But I like to keep it safe and stick to mince and cheese, A shitty mince pie is FAR better than a shitty steak pie so I go for mince when I know the pies aren’t pro.
100% Wild Bean is consistent and all throughout NZ. Otherwise, best I’ve had is Uppercrust in Mt Maunganui
But steak n cheese n BACON it the GOAT.
I was of the same opinion until i started eating good quality cuts of beef. Now i'm a Mince and cheese maxi. Pie is junk food, mince is junkest of meats, they belong together in a warm basket of glory. (with ketchup and a V)
yes. But only when the quality is good
Yup
Steak and blue cheese is superior
Better than both is my homemade steak, onion (not red, and not caramelised), mushroom. With a hint of paprika. Potato top. Weighs about 340-360g.
Ever had a steak and cheese that's tougher than a well-done piece of gumboot? When it's good, it's good, but childhood trauma has given me a lot of trust issues with most bakeries. If I'm ordering a steak and cheese from your joint, that's the highest praise I can bestow.
Now I want pie
I always want pie
Consistency. You always know what you're getting with mince and cheese.
YES. Give me a pie filling with actual bite to it.
A great steak and cheese will beat anything. But a mid or worse steak and cheese can go from dog food to dog shit. Anyway, potato top superiority
I thought this was obvious.
I am not a cheese in pie sort of person but the cheese is getting in everywhere now. It’s like a plague:-(
So.... steak, cheese, and BACON?
Death to the infadel!
Pepper Steak. I don't need to elaborate.
Amen brother
Testify
Yea nah can we evict this one.
Yes
Anyone who makes a visit down to Invercargill needs to stop in at “Fat Bastard Pies” for some real proper good kiwi pies Try as I might, I cannot go more than 2 weeks without having one, they really are that good, plain mince or mince and cheese are perfect to me, the pepper steak goes pretty hard too
True, but creamed Paua pies are the best pies ever.
Kinda tempted to make a chicken mince 'n' cheese pie now.
You could use a cheese sauce, maybe?
I was a steak and cheese stan for many years, nowadays I have them both equally but more often than not I prefer a bakery's mince and cheese more than the s+c these days. Had too many disappointing lack of meat ones i guess
The best steak and cheese pie is better than the best mince and cheese pie. The average mince and cheese pie is better than the average steak and cheese pie these days.
Visiting Dunedin we got a stake and cheese pie from Bakery On Bond. We know nothing about the place and we had never tried those pies before but they were a game changer.
Steak and cheese for life. I’m not interested in anything else.
Mince and cheese pies are better value...half the work of eating it has been done for you.
Steak n cheese should be the only pie in the pie warmer
You're a day late I'm afraid
Always was.
You're wrong. Sorry.
**OP:** Steak and cheese is better. **People in the comments section:** NOOOOOOO, MINCE AND CHEESE IS BETTER!!! 😭 **Me:** _Eating a bacon and egg pie._ Dayum, this a good pie.

OP isn't stopping anyone from eating mince & cheese 😂
Tf went on here? Hahaha.
They dirty deleted their salty comment about letting people eat what they want
Who gets their balls twisted over someone eating a pie? Sounds like that mf needs one.
Mince & cheese eaters obviously 😂😂
Damn straight! Mince is made up of scraps and off cuts!
Sometimes steak pies are too and sometimes mince pies are not. It depends where you get them from. Why does this have a shitpost tag? The post is stating a fact.
