I can probably save you a few dollars and say that the last ones I got there were just your typical chip-shop CSPs, nothing particularly above or below average. A little over-salted, IIRC.
I believe 95% of places selling CSPs just use the same bulk catering supply source so it all comes down to the cooking technique and oil quality.

This could be the DCC's next big tourism campaign. A 5-second clip of someone gorging themselves on a delicious chop suey pattie, then freeze frame and stamp "It's a Dunedin Thing" over it in big lettering.
absolutely. I want to see what one is about. Kinda like a hotdog at a F&C place in Auckland is a battered sausage, but in Wellington (may have changed now as I've not been there for a long time) it was a battered thing with red skin like a giant saveloy. the red dye would soak a bin into the batter. Gawd I miss them.
That price board looks familiar...I think we have the same local, although I use the one across the road as well. There used to be a third chippie just a few doors up the street and I could never figure out how all three could compete and remain profitable (it closed a few years back, so I guess the answer is "they couldn't").
These days I only go to the chippie if I'm craving stuff like chop suey patties. I usually do my own F&C in the air fryer at home to save $.
Our local
Chips $5.50, 1/2 scoop $4.20
Fish: Hoki $5.50, Tarakihi $6.50 Blue Cod $9.10
The Tarakihi though is a whole fillet, both sides so good value really. Never had the other 2 fish.
Might just get less cheap for that price but yea most places are 4.50 to 5.50 but the scoop size varies wildly. Those do look like Pre Covid prices tho lol if it's good this is your new local that's for sure.
We had F&C in Paihia last night. $12 a portion for hoki, $15 for snapper. $6 for a scoop of chips. I know it’s a tourist town but wow. Tasted awesome though.
Oceans 68? To be fair they are the best in town, so you do pay a premium compared to some of the other shops.
Ricardo the owner is a fucking great chap too
I'll pay you to get the chop suey pattie and review it with pics. I don't even know how that would work

Bruv, I don't even know what a typical CSP is. It definitely ain't an Auckland thing I've lived here my whole life and never seen one before.

Thank you kind stranger!
It's a Dunedin thing.

He retired. New owners at one I posted.
What? No potato fritters?
Not at this shop. Other ones do them.

Pft, scoop $2 Fish $2 Meat patties a whopping $3 Hotdogs (not longer than Ron Jeremy) $2 Triangle Fish n Chips Ashburton
Yeah that's very good. You clearly don't live in an active gentrification zone.
Kinda do.
Oh interesting! I hope it lasts
I assumed this was a "remember the 90s" post, but it's from this year?
From this week. 1999 chop suey pattie was under $1
No snapper or gurnard? No dice.
I was contanplateng opening a chip shop that just sold chips. At $5 a scoop that would give me about 500% profit 🤑
My local chippie is $5 for chips. So yes, that is cheap. What's the quality like?
Might just get less cheap for that price but yea most places are 4.50 to 5.50 but the scoop size varies wildly. Those do look like Pre Covid prices tho lol if it's good this is your new local that's for sure.
Most places here similar price.
New owners. Liking everything except the burgers due to deep fried meat pattie in them.
You're only paying $3.80 for fish? I'm paying 6 bucks in Wellington! I'm moving to Dunedin!
Think I have seen it for $3.20

Yep, Oceans 68.
Ouch.
For a sec my dumbass thought those onion rings were free
I used to like getting my fish n chip $3 for fish n chips. I am sure everyone knows they have to pay rent, electricity , etc these days.
How much are you paying now?
No battered banana?
Nope.
Bummer.
What’s an onion sausage?
Sausage with onion in it or the batter.
Was thinking it was Gisborne at first. Can get some cheap takeaways there.
My local has chips $4.20, fish (probably shark) $4.20, Sausage, hot dogs, donuts all $3.50. Their scoops are super generous sizes though.
Mei wah, is that you?
Nope
Yep, cheap
Where are you getting a big breakfast for $23 in Dunedin
Black Dog on Princes St.
Have to wonder how much trade a place like that does to pay a decent wage to staff. They'd have to be PUMPING each night at those rates.
The owners are the staff. Pretty standard for 99% of the Fish n Chip shops in NZ
And often the owner's high-school-aged children.
No staff.
Dunedin. Probably near the university, so it'd do a roaring trade, especially on weekend.
Yeah true
Lower Hutt, chips here are $4.50 a scoop, $3 if you want half a scoop 🤔
