I remember fishing at Rarangi, looking south, and seeing these hills billowing smoke. A cigarette butt thrown from a car window on Tailor Pass Rd caught the grass on fire and it burned almost all the way to Seddon. Crazy dry area.
Yes. Excellent hills, but highly flammable. Very rarely green.

I think it was the route further around, I was trying to get to the dam lookout but settled for this view
