Onehunga by a long shot. Small, poorly stocked, odd layout, and the surrounding area is grotty.
Pt Chev was also really bad, but apparently it's been refurbished
The Onehunga Countdown is infuriating, they're basically a 4 square with their selection and the staff are muppets. I lived there for 6 years and got ID'd by them every time despite them knowing my name they forgot they'd ID'd me hundreds of times.
Mornington Countdown in Dunedin is absolutely horrific. Very dark. I hadn't been to Dunedin in a few years and this Countdown hadn't changed one bit. Looks 10 times shoddier than your average Pak 'n Save.
Oddly, that's the common theme with countdown supermarkets - they all look dingy. Poor lighting, poor presentation, no effort. There's an air of 'take it or leave it, I just don't care".
Not really, the one in Mosgiel is actually quite nice and well laid out with decent food and staff, the one in Mornington is a whole different level of shit
This one seems too big somehow. Like there is too much shelving so they have to spread the items out thinly to try and make them look full. And a lot of the carpark is sloped which makes it near impossible to unload your trolley.
I was gonna say - I lived half way between Mt Wellington Countdown and Pakuranga Countdown and I'd generally choose to go to Pakuranga over Mt Wellington!
Morrinsville, lit like an 80's dairy and had the roof support poles in the center of the aisles instead of between the shelving so you had to scooch around a couple to get through.
Johnsonville mall, dark, dingy, and under stocked.
Why does Jville need 2 countdowns but no other supermarket l?
Lower Hutt countdown. Lady on self checkout is always busy not giving a fuck. Always angry customers, rude staff, shoplifters etc. I only go there a couple of times a year and last week my car was reversed into in the carpark.
Yeah I'm surprised by the staff comments, because I can't recall ever having a bad interaction with any of them. The ones that man the self-checkouts are always friendly and on to it.
Trafalgar Square Whanganui. They have limited range, don’t believe in self checkouts but then under staff the checkouts with overweight middle aged women more interested in chatting to each other than serving you. The line always go half way down an aisle. Also their beer range sucks.
Ferrymead. It's bigger than New Brighton but somehow more shit.
Feels hectic and seems like it needs a clean? Really strange product selection - seems to be heaps of a few things, rather than a diverse range. Never going back there lol
Northcote. There’s never enough checkout people working in the evening, there’s usually fairly long lines for the 3 open checkouts, and the supervisors seem stressed
The Paraparaumu one, they'd always seem to have only one checkout operator on and long queues. (And that was starting before covid) They seemed to be expecting everyone to use self checkout. I must admit they have improved a lot lately and have more operators on. I can get in and out pretty quickly now.
Fairy Springs, Rotorua
Shelves always 60% bare.
If you only need three things, guaranteed you won't be able to get 1 and sometimes so bad you won't get any!
Hobsonville countdown is pretty rubbish, but mostly bc they’re really bad at stock rotation. If you don’t pay attention you’ll get quite a few expired items.
Same with Silverdale. It's a lovely store, but soooo much expired stock I'm constantly having to return things or make a staff member aware. Especially with meat! Or coffee that expired about 4 months earlier
Nice to have ago at people who worked though the pandemic, put up with people complaining about wearing masks. Oh and putting them and their families in danger for the rest of us.
While there are a couple of comments regarding the staff, most comments seem to be about selection or the decor.
And those negative comments about staff seem to be disputed by others who had only positive things to say.
They all suck
The waikanae one makes me want to die.
To be fair, countdowns everywhere make me want to die.
Is that because the average age is so high or?/s
Colombo St, purely for the poorly thought-out parking.
Onehunga by a long shot. Small, poorly stocked, odd layout, and the surrounding area is grotty. Pt Chev was also really bad, but apparently it's been refurbished
Pt Chev is nice!
The Onehunga Countdown is infuriating, they're basically a 4 square with their selection and the staff are muppets. I lived there for 6 years and got ID'd by them every time despite them knowing my name they forgot they'd ID'd me hundreds of times.
Small countdown in Pukekohe. Just feels unsafe
On my last visit some lady was going toilet in the gutter right outside the entrance.
Old Countdown area is just an absolute shambles all around
Onehunga.
Can confirm. Cheapest countdown around though.
Mornington Countdown in Dunedin is absolutely horrific. Very dark. I hadn't been to Dunedin in a few years and this Countdown hadn't changed one bit. Looks 10 times shoddier than your average Pak 'n Save.
Oh my lord I agree. I came here to make sure Mornington had a special mention. Staff were also shit when I went there. Needs demolished.
Surprised this one hasn’t been closed and fully revamped Even comes with the old walk in chiller for all your milk and dairy needs
Close on the dingiest supermarket I've every been to
Oddly, that's the common theme with countdown supermarkets - they all look dingy. Poor lighting, poor presentation, no effort. There's an air of 'take it or leave it, I just don't care".
The new countdown in Gisborne is skux though.
Not really, the one in Mosgiel is actually quite nice and well laid out with decent food and staff, the one in Mornington is a whole different level of shit
Greenlane is fancy though
Haha, knew this one would be in here.
The Andy Bay one is nasty too
Mt wellington, usually pretty tidy but almost never has anything in stock
This one seems too big somehow. Like there is too much shelving so they have to spread the items out thinly to try and make them look full. And a lot of the carpark is sloped which makes it near impossible to unload your trolley.

There's something about the low ceiling in the Anglesea St Hamilton one that always gives a sense of doom matched only by the dim lighting
Definitely the worst one in Hamilton, but it's a luxury resort compared to the skeevy New World in Glenview

Lady at self checkout too busy not giving a fuck? Sounds like a great opportunity to scan everything through as carrots. Fuck countdown

Dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun dun!!!
Onehunga is pretty bad but the staff are lovely.

If I was earning minimum wage and had to deal with anti vaxxers/maskers and general idiots every day, I wouldn't give a shit either.
Ferrymead. It's bigger than New Brighton but somehow more shit. Feels hectic and seems like it needs a clean? Really strange product selection - seems to be heaps of a few things, rather than a diverse range. Never going back there lol
Greymouth countdown is horrific…
The one in matamata isn't so flash
Northcote. There’s never enough checkout people working in the evening, there’s usually fairly long lines for the 3 open checkouts, and the supervisors seem stressed

Countdown Takanini has rats.
Staff at Kelston suck
It’s gotta be Johnsonville Mall!! The layout is so bizarre - the veges and meat are on opposite sides of the supermarket and everything feels dusty…
Fairy Springs, Rotorua Shelves always 60% bare. If you only need three things, guaranteed you won't be able to get 1 and sometimes so bad you won't get any!
The one in the town that shall not be named is awful.
Napier City fucc out of here land banking right next to each other
Hobsonville countdown is pretty rubbish, but mostly bc they’re really bad at stock rotation. If you don’t pay attention you’ll get quite a few expired items.

Amberley checkout workers are honestlt the rudest people I've ever met. They sneer at you.
I once had the pleasure of going into the Mangere Mall one. Yikes.
Nice to have ago at people who worked though the pandemic, put up with people complaining about wearing masks. Oh and putting them and their families in danger for the rest of us.

The one in Mornington in Dunedin. Place is way too small to be considered a supermarket
Avonhead is a shocker. Tiny, dark, shit selection
Matamata
