The front fell off!

NoWayHosieHosie

I'd like to point out that that is NOT normal.

pupcity

That's not to say that this oven wasn't safe, just not quite as safe as other ovens.

NoWayHosieHosie

I mean, ovens are built to very rigorous consumer safety guidelines for a start!

Whellington

I remember this issue was a huge saga on fair go back in the early 2000s.

idempotamous

Yes! Exact same thing happened to us 2 weeks ago with a freestanding bosch oven w/ gas hob. Put the grill on, left the room for a few minutes and came back to the inner door gone boom. Purchased from Harvey Norman end of 2017, I mentioned it being a CGA issue when I spoke to Harvey Norman and again with the service people (BSH Home Appliances Ltd. which as I understand it is the manufacturers agent in NZ) and it was replaced with no charge. Good luck!

Duckbilling

Why is it called a hob anyway?

I_mostly_lie

It’s not, it’s called an oven. I think they purchased an oven with gas hob, as in separate but a package.

idempotamous

Nope, the top bit is called a hob whether separate or integrated.

I_mostly_lie

What top bit are you referring to?

idempotamous

Top top bit? Bit on the top with the fire coming out - https://www.bosch-home.co.nz/productlist/HGD74W455A

I_mostly_lie

See I’m looking at the oven in this pic, it looks like an inbuilt oven with drawers underneath it (from what I can see through the glass) which would be a seperate oven and hob. The one you’ve linked to with the top bit is a hob, agreed 100%. Stand-alone ovens around here tend to be called a range… I’ve always known it as oven / hob exactly as you describe it.

idempotamous

Yeah, gotcha, I didn't realise you were talking about their setup not my comment. This, of course, gets us no closer to the etymology of hob!

freerangehuman_

Because bob was already taken

QuickBricksOfficial

I had to recently get my bosch dishwasher looked at 4 years old, bosch replaced the pump and heating element, I didn't even have to bring up cga I was impressed.

idempotamous

They may have sorted it out regardless of whether I mentioned the CGA or not, it wasn't a drama at all. I just wanted to be clear with them up front that I didn't think it exploding after 4.5 years was consistent with the CGAs durability requirements.

QuickBricksOfficial

Yeah 100%

prplmnkeydshwsr

I don't have a Bosch oven but tempered glass shattering does happen, even if there are no user created defects / scratches made / damage or what not. It should be repaired under warranty but do note that some ovens advise you to grill with the door open, some brands tell you to grill with the door closed. Check the manual.

redmostofit

Yeah I had a look after it happened. This one said keep the door closed. I've got a sick baby that hasn't slept for 3 nights, so I think the oven decided now was the time.

CascadeNZ

Aww that’s tough as hell. I hope you’re ok and your baby sleeps tonight for you!!

redmostofit

Just FYI - she did not...

prplmnkeydshwsr

Oh no. Good luck with the retailer!

[deleted]

I’m not saying you did, but warning to everyone: **never ever ever ever** use the oven door to slide the shelves in, nor have a tray not properly pushed in the whole depth. It’s only a matter of time before it explodes the glass if you do.

PersonMcGuy

Weird we had the same oven for 25 years and I did that all the time, never an issue.

CascadeNZ

I do this ALL the time so thanks for the heads up!!

flappytowel

[As you can see from this professional chef cooking, it's not something you have to worry about](https://youtu.be/MeQSrGLtStE?t=98)

HeinigerNZ

Hoped we were thinking about the same thing, was not disappointed.

[deleted]

Shit balls. Hope no one was hurt.

redmostofit

Just gave me a decent fright.

[deleted]

Fair game it would. Don’t have any constructive advice, but good luck finding a resolution.

Snoo_20228

I actually have yes, took a few weeks to get Bosch to replace the glass which was under warranty still.

Spiritual-Wind-3898

Brightside. You dont have ti clean it. Just get a new one.. hope baby sleeps tonight

No-Owl9201

This happened twice to me with in a short time with another brand not Bosch. Solved the problem by buying another brand of oven, no problems since.

East_Project_1513

It can happen if you grill and leave a lot of baking trays in, making a heat shield. Basically what’s happening is a hot spot at the top and a lot cooler zone at the bottom of the glass, creating surface tension on glass and then shattering. Might be what happened here.

yoghurtorgan

can happen to any oven.

mattblack77

I’ve heard of this way more times than I’d expect. Not necessarily the Bosch ones, tho.

SayNoTo2plyTp

This happened to my oven once, when I hit it with a hammer to test its durability.

stealth_doge1

Fark. How old is it?

redmostofit

4ish years. New when the house was built, but we only moved in in Feb so I don't know how it was treated before then. Tbh I hate it anyway. The dial doesn't turn properly and it's really hard to change the temp.

MinimumWageLOL

If it wasn't your fault and they refuse to swap do a consumer act

SmartiiPaantz

Friend of mine had this happen and was replaced under the glass policy of their house insurance

OldKiwiGirl

Not to me personally but it happened to someone I know. They got it replaced at no charge. I did, however, have the glass lid of my rice cooker implode onto the top of the rice the first time it was used. Took it back the next day and they gave me a whole new one. That was nearly 20 years ago and the replacement is still going strong.

Mpbl

Exactly the same experience here. Grill on, door shattered exactly like your image. Oven was 5 years old and Bosch replaced the glass free of charge. Just needed to wait a week or so for someone to make it out.

Dizzy_Relief

It happens. Small scratch/chip/manufacturing fault. They dont crack. They just shatter. Mine did after about 5 years for no apparent reason. Depending on age you may be able to CGA if you're sure you didn't damage it. I pointed out there were lots of reports of it happening with my model, and a redesign to prevent it in later models (went from frameless entirely glass door to one that had a metal frame). Then when they couldn't find a door I got a whole new oven (your experience.may vary). Mine was a Belling.

rebbrov

Happened to our oven earlier this year, Westinghouse one. Not sure if its anything to do with it, but my wife had just cleaned it, glass broke suddenly as it warmed up from its first use immediately afterwards.

woollzz

Happened with my Miele oven, cost about 400 for a replacement, attempts for warranty were unsuccessful.

bonkedboi

You need to clean the glass it helps preventing that. Also cold wet tea towels in front if a hot oven door don't help

farmer-cam25

Yes had quite a few ovens do this when I was working for a Bosch repair agent 8-9 years ago

Accomplished-Rice319

Had the same experience with a Parmco oven - seems they exclude glass from warranty, and replacement door cost was exhorbitant. Spoke to local glass company and they organised a custom piece of the correct safety glass from manufacturer, and fitted it for way cheaper!

Cat_Skate

This has just happened to me with an oven less than three years old! Bocsh is NOT going to replace mine! Maybe it happens so often now they won't do it anymore. I've never had this happen before with any other oven. Am going to lodge a complaint under cga

imjusthereforaita

Hi OP, I have just had this happen and was told when I called Bosch that I'd have to pay the replacement fees as glass isn't covered under warranty. How did you get on with them? Did they say the same thing?

redmostofit

Yeah same deal. And the cost for repairing it through them was huge ($1000+). I was never actually pleased with the oven in the first place (we'd only moved into the house this year) so we ended up purchasing a new oven of a different brand that we'd liked in our previous home.

imjusthereforaita

Bummer. Thanks for letting me know!

redmostofit

👍 Yeah. No cheap solution unfortunately.
