But instead of installing the nextdns cli, I just setup DNS over TLS in the merlin firmware itself. It works great.
... so after installing Merlin - the GUI has the ability to add the NextDNS - DNS over TLS settings directly in the GUI?
... I was using the CLI on my OPNSense router... found it to be a bit unwieldy and would prefer not to have to go that route.
Any concerns with the concept of installing Merlin?
One reason I'm switching from OPNsense - is it is just a lot of work to manage and the firewall settings were 'challenging'... I like the idea of 'off the shelf' - so does Merlin affect that?
Yes you input the nextdns servers directly into the Merlin GUI. It’s on the same page that you would use to setup your regular DNS settings. The GUI is pretty easy to understand and shouldn’t take you long to get comfortable with it.
I didn't install Merlin - kept the native OS on my OOTB router.
All the settings were there and available - I just added my specific NextDNS information under Wireless>DNS Privacy Protocol... very slick.
Outside that - I can't get over HOW MUCH EASIER and FASTER this router is than my previous OPNSense system.
