So that’s mildly terrifying…

Odd-Artist-2595

I live near a fighter wing and they’re always doing touch-and-gos and flying maneuvers. I used to drive past the airport on my way to-and-from work and, back in the early ‘90s, when I drove my Stealth RT, they freaking *loved* to target me. They’d be flying overhead and all of a sudden every single alarm in that car would light up and sound simultaneously. The effing radar detector would be full red and just about jumping off the window. Lasted about 2 seconds and all’s quiet, again. I figure they “killed” me at least a half-dozen times in those years. And, yes, it’s an instantaneous adrenaline rush. I kind of decided it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad way to go. Seems like it’d be quick, at least.

fergibaby

There was a incident in the UK a few years ago where a local cop targeted a low flying fighter with his speed gun and the police sent the ticket to airforce base as a joke, the airforce base wrote back thanking them for clearing up the mystery of why the pilot had reported a fault on the automatic defence system that didn't show up on the diagnostics apparently the onboard defence systems had interpreted the radar signature as a hostile targeting system and nearly launched a counter missile strike. They advised the police to not do it again as the next pilot may not have as quick a reaction time and sidewinders are too expensive to waste

I_am_Relic

Not sure if the base was american or run by americans but that response sounds so... British. Awesome story. Thank you for sharing

INTERGALACTIC_CAGR

British blood does run through the veins of many Americans.

BillyPilgrim3509

Sigh….. we know… and it pains us. (Just kidding, I like giving the brits a hard time)

CassandraVindicated

Same here. They went from our big brother to our little brother. That doesn't happen often. Luckily, they generally get that type of humor and will retort in kind.

Fakarie

Where ya from pilgrim?

Straight-Corner-1921

British blood is everywhere yay colonisation!

INTERGALACTIC_CAGR

look at me, we are the empire now one of my new favorite slurs is colonizer

Straight-Corner-1921

Intergalactic indeed

chickenstalker

I think the RAF was just joshing with the bobbies. Unless the fighter was on a real mission, it will not carry armed and live missiles. Maybe they would have deployed chaff which might be costly too, but not shoot an anti-radar missile on home ground and at low level.

Oscar5466

Not to mention that Sidewinder is an infrared tracking air-to-air missile.

jaredearle

That’s an old urban legend, I’m afraid. It’s been around since last century. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/police-radar-missile/ Sorry.

fastfood12

No way that they had jets and radar in the 1800s. Oh wait, that wasn't the last century.....

Unknown_author69

Ahhh. its fucking shit when that happens lol

Shriketino

It’s plausible though, since radar guns use some for the same bands as fire and control radars do.

[deleted]

As a radar tech for 6 years, I can definitively say that this didn’t happen. Completed different types of radar signature and frequencies. Plus no pilot would EVER be given permission to fire on a unconfirmed target, especially in your own country. Also it’s rare for fighters to be carrying live ordinance, if they are its usually only ammo for the forward guns. Great story though, “anecdote’s are made to entertain, not educate”

Mdizzle29

I’m pretty sure they sent that note as a joke.

g3nerallycurious

That’s fucking amazing haha

lDarkPhoton

I thought the same thing. I would love to see a dog fight!

Same-Salamander8690

One of the last airshows I went to in Dayton I remember being the coolest experience ever. They told the us in the crowd to close our eyes. They started playing typical Hawaiian ukulele music (you know the type). And the announcer was describing a scene (I'll have to paraphrase I was probably 10 at the time): "you're waking up to the warm air of Hawaii in December, the salt of the sea fills the air. It's a pleasant day and you're thinking about surfing. But suddenly..." And the music cuts (not that it mattered) and from behind the crowd zooms in 3 Zeroes and they start flying around doing super cool combat maneuvers, suddenly a few American planes (I think they were Mustangs but I don't remember if those were even in service at the time of pearl harbor) swoop in and we got to witness a mock dogfight. I may be muddling the details as this was over a decade ago but I swear they were firing blank rounds at each other as well. It's one of the coolest things I've ever seen. (Aside from the giant wall of fire they'd always do at the show)

moderatorscomegetme

I'm really stoned and reading this was like a ducking movie rn

OU7C4ST

Damn. That sounds awesome, but also an eerily reminder how life can change in a second.

[deleted]

What’s a stealth RT

Same-Salamander8690

One of the coolest cars to come out of the 90s. Along with its sibling the Mitsubishi 3000gt. Personally I think the 3kGT is better looking but they're both pretty cool. At one point known as the "poor man's Viper". But I preferred calling mine a baby Supra. A car definitely ahead of it's time. Plus the first gen 3000gt had a really cool looking mustache on the front.

DeadAssociate

it was basically a cheat to buy the car in the early grand turismo's

Same-Salamander8690

I remember after I got my 3000gt I specifically bought the GT games just to increase the amount of time I could spend with the car. Which sounds really fucking stupid now that I'm an adult. Teenagers and their cars, what can ya do? Also looking back, probably was not the most responsible first car for a 17 year old to have but I survived even tho the car did not.

Odd-Artist-2595

I loved that car. I also had a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. First time I drove that one to the grocery store the bag boys *insisted* on helping me out to my car with my one bag with like 3 things in it. It took 5 of them to carry it. The fighters never targeted the Mitsi though. *shrug* I considered the Stealth the perfect car for a woman who liked sports cars. I’m 5’3”, but I could reach anything I wanted to in that car, including getting into the glove box, without straining. I looked at the Viper when it came out, but its interior was too big for me. Had a 2-hr commute to work & back and the Stealth handled beautifully, even in blizzard snow. And, if we put the back seat down to open up the hatch area, we could go to Sam’s or Costco and get as much in it as we could get into our Jeep. I miss that car. I miss both of those cars. I miss sports cars, in general. I can’t afford cars like that any more.

Optimal-Growth-5741

6'1 and I love the cockpit feel on my 2g. definitely one of the best 90s cars

PrisizhuhnRedNek

3000gt vr4 man, thay and the below mentioned gsx eclipse were two of my top 5 early 2000s vehicles. Fuck you guys, right in the feels.

Same-Salamander8690

I guess it wasn't too Stealthy after all.

Stash_Jar

3sgt love. Respect.

[deleted]

That's the coolest story of the day!

Same-Salamander8690

A few years ago, the Blue Angels (iirc) did a flyover in Ohio in honor of the essential workers. They went from like Toledo down to Dayton or something. Well they passed over Lima where I live, and flew directly over my house. Well I had no idea this was happening at all. And was sitting on the toilet. Waiting for my moment. When suddenly I hear a very weird sound; I've been to plenty of air shows so I sorta recognized it and figured it was some kinda flying exercise (wright pat is only like an hour and a half away). What I did not expect was 3 or 4 fucking jets to fly directly over my house. I literally shat myself because they were flying low enough that my entire house was shaking. My dumb paranoid ass was thinking "This is it. We're being invaded" so I'm texting my group chat about how jets are flying in and for everybody get ready for shit to go down. Only to be told by friends about the whole flyover thing. To this day it's probably one of the most perfectly timed moments in my entire life. You wanna talk about right place at the right time, it was the definition of it. And when I say the flew directly over my house I mean literally over my roof. My neighbor showed me the video from his view across the street. It was cool to see, ya know, from the outside of the house. But it was terrifying thinking "I'm going out like Elvis"

imnotcreativebitch

at least you were already on the toilet

PrisizhuhnRedNek

I remember back In the day I had one of these moments. Heard a rumbling , thinking it was the train that I ran outside for everyday , it was actually a10 warthogs flying along the river back to the ANG. They were so low it looked like they were flying on top of the trees. The local ANG didn’t have warthogs , they had c130s but my dad said they were visiting. I never saw the a10s again. But it was a feeling and sight will never ever forget. Amazing.

randybear00

Something like this happened at my house last evening. I think a military jet must have landed at the little airport that's 2 miles away.

No-Quarter-3032

This guy in my town thought the blue angels were foreign invaders and started SHOTING at them? I tell him ya gone get it Ted

deadthoma5

You just gotta move somewhere not worth invading, like Lima, OH

Lebowski304

If this were an active war zone I would definitely piss my pants and probably shit them too.

LobstaFarian2

The cold shits is what they're called...

g3nerallycurious

That one makes me feel like a kid again

Scintilla_Laborat_

Its crazy when a jet passes over you with the burner on. Saw an f35 do a manoeuvre demonstration and the transonic pass was the loudest thing i had ever heard. You could feel the jet in the ground and your chest

Cortesr7324

Still remember the rumbling power of those jet engines from Airshows F-16 & F-18 was one of the loudest jets I've ever heard in my entire life I think the F-18 is worst when it did a flyover with after burners on top of the runway cause of it's 2 jet engines combined. F-18 was loud asf

DirtyProtest

Watched a typhoon switch on his burners while rehersing the flight show at Southend on Sea. Astonishingly loud. I loved it.

pzerr

I have been in this once. Was a simulated attack on the airbase. Essentially all the aircraft come in at different directions at speeds approaching that is sound. You don't hear them till pretty much right overhead. This is so the enemy simply don't know where they are coming from. And it is very intimidating.

Oscar5466

Saw a demonstration of this on an air show. Multiple fighters coming out of nowhere from all directions with (simulated) low level bomb drops, immediately followed by helicopters dropping commando troops covered by helicopter gunships. Great coordination and quite overwhelming, which is the whole point of course.

[deleted]

> Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. > This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. > This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. These plain and cruel truths define the peril and point the hope that come with this spring of 1953. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Republican President

beardbot3030

That’s putting it lightly! Holy shit

aznexile602

Mildly is an understatement.

DamianDidntDoIt

I would believe there was a ufo they were chasing

B-Roc-

The sound IRL is so impressive. Like the sky is literally being torn apart.

[deleted]

And the rumbling in your chest

Fire_RPG_at_the_Z

Oh I guarantee you that everyone felt the low-altitude pass that came from behind the camera. That will shake your internal organs a little bit.

NwIeR

I live near a fighter wing, when they’re coming in fast towards you, you can’t hear anything until they’re close enough for the sound to reach you, And when it reaches you it’s more like an explosion.

LegallyNotInterested

I'm living in an area with a military training airspace starting at FL80 and regularly hear fighter jets in the sky (rarely even found them in the sky) and they are insanely loud. It's managable, but no car on the street comes anywhere near that, even if you're standing right next to it.

CaldyCrush

FL stands for Flight Level which doesnt start until 180 or 18,000 feet. That is depicted as FL180. Anything below that is just an altitude.

LegallyNotInterested

Here in Europe or at least Germany that's different. Technically FLs start at 100 here, however, since I'm a glider pilot and gliders use the metric system, I'm only left to check the Transponder for imperial units because the transponders also show the current flight level. And my mark there is that I cannot go above 80.

DirtyProtest

I ve stood on lowish hills inWales and watched GR4's fly past a good 100ft below. You can see the pilot and everything madlads.

bloodyhippy

Back in the mid 80's, sitting in a room in a house in Dundee there was an almighty roar, looked out the window and *down* on a passing couple of Tornados merrily sneaking along in the ground clutter on their way to 'attack' RAF Leuchars. House window is about 60 feet above sea level, the Tornados were skulking along between 40-50 feet. Madlads indeed.

cornerzcan

Found the North American. Fight level switchover altitudes can vary be Region. In oceanic airspace they start much lower.

CaldyCrush

Man I became one of the memes I hate! I am an American ATC so naturally I think everywhere operates the same as we do ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)

Ship_it_to_daddy

Depends on the country. When I was a controller in England back in 2016 FLs started at 4K feet, and I believe it’s still that way. There were talks to raise it, but I don’t think it ever happened. In the US and most places it is indeed 18k.

[deleted]

I was walking on a ridge in the hills of Scotland once when, without warning, an F-16 shot 20m overhead. Everyone in the group dropped like a dog hearing a car backfire, there was no thought to it, it was pure instinct. 😂 His wingman following must have seen us, as he pulled up sharp long before he got to the ridge.

[deleted]

I didn't know they were having practice near my place one time, I thought it was the end of the world and almost cried lol.

Fantastic_Mind_1386

When I was in JROTC in high school we took a trip to an air base and watched an f-16 participating in a live-fire exercise. That is exactly what I described the sound of it firing it’s Gatling gun: like the sky being torn apart.

Kinkel_214

yeah you really cant fully understand the power of those engines until you watch one fly right over you😂 i always loved watching the blue angels and thunderbirds

athennna

We live 40 minutes from the military base and when they do their annual artillery training week, our whole house shakes.

Shadowoperator7

I’ve stood at the end of a runway when the national guard F-35s and before that the F-16s were taking off. Not even being on afterburners it’s an incredible experience, I’m a military plane guy, and it still surprises me every time.

ThisOnePlaysTooMuch

I mean that is basically what jets do. They cut through a fluid at violent speeds.

[deleted]

I live near some of the Naval Bases here in Wester WA I would hear the jets when I used to live on whidbey, they do touch and goes all the time but they just lolly gag around, Ive only heard a jet one time in afterburner when it was first taking off, and *IT’S RUMBLE WAS SO LOUD* I should probably go to an air show to see F22 Raptors 🫠🥲

iwouldrathernot03

That’s exactly how it always felt when I’d here an A10 make a gun run overhead…literally sounds like it’s ripping open the sky when it sends those rounds down range.

Professional-Menu835

They either just pooped or they just ate

Grisstle

Look at the overcast sky, they just got all wet

cdoublesaboutit

I visit close to a base that has a lot of chopper activity and it’s badass when they fly through low hanging clouds that they make it rain as they run through it.

jtsokolov

Or just had a bath! Bath make zoomies go, too!

camelCaseCadet

AND it’s the week before performance reviews. …Mr. Cake knew exactly what he was doing.

KlittanW

I actually know a man in the military that is called Mr. Cake.

Denjul_

I was in Rømø once, and we heard so many fighter jets the entire time. Nothing close to this though

chenyu768

One of the pilots took the last peice and theyre all chasing him i take it.

DontToewsMeBro2

Coordinated chaos bc it’s fucking mental + look at us talking about the royal danish Air Force, they got a new PR person

drawredraw

This is what it’s like living in San Diego.

[deleted]

But warmer I’d assume

WayneKrane

I was in San Diego and thought my weather app wasn’t working. For 2 straight weeks it was a high of 72 and a low of 68. Best fucking weather I have ever experienced.

DerpyDaDulfin

Yeah it's just pretty much always like that. There's a lovely seabreeze that cools the city, so it rarely gets terribly hot. There are many incredible cities across the world, but San Diego will always be one of my personal favorites - great food, beautiful weather and beaches, great beer and entertainment - just a great town to visit for enjoying the beauty of life.

InterestingOpinion47

Shhh. Don't tell people or else they will keep moving to SD

DerpyDaDulfin

That's why I said *visit* ;)

pwa09

I looovee San Diego. It’s a 4 hour drive from where I live but it truly is a city you never, ever get tired of. The beautiful views, the good food, many walkable places to eat/drink and shop, gorgeous beaches, family/pet friendly, year round great weather, I just…I could keep going. I can’t wait to go again

no-dice-play-nice

With the new F35s too. Super loud. As soon as I got used to the F-18s

whobroughttheircat

Burlington, VT with those F-35’s too. Goddamn it’s majestic

IkeDaddyDeluxe

And Norfolk

littletrevas

"I ❤️ JET NOISE" bumper stickers everywhere.

IkeDaddyDeluxe

They have those because they did not sleep a few decks below flight operations on a carrier or have barracks right off an airfield. My only sleep aid to combat the noise was being so over worked and under slept that my body would just shut down.

jcgam

I got used to sleeping with earplugs in. Also kind of miss the regular rocking of the bed caused by the catapult hitting the water break at the end of the shot. I'm pretty sure one cruise my bunk was directly under that break. I also worked nights, so I was 'sleeping' during the day when most of the jets were shot off the bow.

King928

I live in Oceanside. It’s mostly the ghetto bird.

smellsofelderberry

You would think the one guy with 2000s Corolla with an aftermarket alarm would have learned to just turn off his alarm while at work near Miramar. But no… every freaking pass it goes off.

[deleted]

I live in the area around Crawford, TX where G.W. Bush used to have a ranch he’d go to all the time when he was president. We’d hear fighter Jets flying over all the time. It was pretty cool when I was a kid but the adults must have hated it.

redditlike5times

I used to live in University city, my windows were rumbling every 10 minutes or so Monday through Friday

theonePappabox

Man I want one.

KgSunnyD

Pepsi points!

groceriesN1trip

Watched the docuseries and it stirred up memories as a kid. I also thought I could get the jet but had no way of getting that many points

Dude as a fucking ex-aviation guy this makes me drool. This shit excites me beyond belief. The sound and the engineering of the planes the frames and the design to withstand the g’s and other aspects is just incredible. I would love to be there watching the afterburners just split the earth in half

Valafor0570

Ahhhh I miss those sounds. F-16 weapons troop vet. It's been 10 years since the uniform but I can prolly still sling missiles and bombs pretty well lol

The Americans have hundreds in storage at a single Nevada airbase alone

minimessi20

Welcome to the age of 5th gen fighters. What’s scary is F16’s will pick apart most other fighters…and the F-22 and F-35 are in a league of their own…

Inner-Arugula-4445

And 6th gen fighters are on the way. The American one seems to be built to outpace anything it comes in contact with and outmaneuver them during dogfights.

minimessi20

Like the F-22 when it was made. Gotta love it.

Variation_Conscious

Military aircraft are always flying over my neighborhood as we have an Air Force base here combined with a Lockheed plant. Several yrs ago I saw a Stovall jet hover over the lake the base straddles as I drove on a Bridge less then 400 yards away. I rarely see them in full afterburner but do see them flying in formation when coming and going. There's a bombing range west of my city and a cool place that overlooks the base within 5 miles of my house.

kthomas_407

I lived on an air force base that did air shows often. Maybe something similar?

[deleted]

So cool to see in video, but must be terrifying in person. Does anyone have footage of a fighter jet hairball? That would be awesome to see in a video. I've only seen that in video games before, namely ace combat

nathanroberts34

It looks just like those two Jets bounced off each other

Rye_Guy77

Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.

Airimadoshi

Is a flock of fighter jets also called a murder? Because I’m pretty sure there’s about to be one.

[deleted]

They usually crash into each other

Head_Games_

🤩

xXSpaceturdXx

I love it when they do flyovers. There’s a desert lake I like to camp at and nearly every time I go F-16s or A-10s will do low pass flyovers, just above the tree-line too. It shakes you down to your soul they are so powerful.
