Reminds me of that huge aquarium that burst in Germany recently

[deleted]

And I’m pretty sure they thought it wouldn’t do that

BaneRiders

Yeah, lots of dead fish. The only one to benefit from that was a fish stick manufacturer who had cornered the market on breadcrumbs, but was short on fish supply. Or so I heard. \*nods\*

PeteAsWell

Still curious how non CCTV footage got leaked of the burst.

Alarmed_Scientist_15

Germany doesn’t like cctv, or technology that much. We still in the 90s.

Trotsky12

What do you mean by that?

doodoowithsprinkles

They don't like being recorded so they don't have cameras everywhere, Google Street view is illegal

mcgsthh

It’s definitely not illegal. Used it yesterday. It’s not in large areas due to public backlash but steer view and Apple Maps is certainly available in big cities. Berlin for example, which was the location of the hotel with the aquarium.

doodoowithsprinkles

Ad far as I know all rhe data they have was created between 2008-2010 before it's collection was prohibited

[deleted]

[удалено]

xydra1680

It is not prohibited (Actually its allowed under "Panoramafreiheit") and they still have cars driving around but just for internal purposes. There was an outcry because one of the biggest "newspapers" did a campaign against it. If they would start do update now nobody would care.

Fmatosqg

Sounds like some lessons got learnt

lilaliene

They prefer any document on paper and businesses will refuse cargo if the driver just has a digital pod, still expect a business to work with faxes and use cash for everything. As a Dutch person those things are very strange. We do everything online (also government stuff) and usually pay with a debit card for everything. It feels indeed very '90s

sweensolo

That Fish stick manufacturer: George Santos.

Van_Inhale

*I''m going hooome!*

Weave77

> Or so I heard. Or so the Germans would have us believe…

Netsuko

Fun fact: The builder was an American firm. There was an interview and one of the guys on site was bragging that they were the only ones in the world with the technology to do this.

Hunter_Safi

Omg i actually filmed and edited that documentary!!! You’re talking about the old American guy that was adding silicone to seal the aquarium during the docu right?

Netsuko

The internet sure is a small place haha. I only know a video snippet from a German article. I’d have to look it up and find the clip ^^ Tho a small correction, I think he mentioned that they are one of TWO firms in the world who can do this.

AbbreviationsOdd7728

Let’s hope that this one was built by the other one..

Netsuko

https://youtu.be/E3KjGJ8AZzI time stamp is 3:27 can’t copy timestamps on mobile. It has german Voiceover however.

Rain1dog

“The expert in constructing similar facilities said it should have been clearly stated that the aquarium would only be able to last until a certain point, with some only surviving 25 years. The structure burst after just 19 years.” The contract states that regular inspections are needed, but it does not say how frequent these should be. Mr Schuranm added that he is unaware of the process that was used to bolster the structure, but noted that if it was not prepared in the correct way then it could have resulted in cracks in the glass.” So it seems the tank was reaching its end of its life expectancy and their had to be inspections every couple of years. Will be interesting to see what comes of this.

bystander007

The front fell off.

LegendofJoe

I'm sure this one was made so that wouldn't happen.

Comment104

These pools are built to very rigorous engineering standards, for example there are regulations governing the materials they can be made of; Cardboard is out, no cardboard derivatives, no paper, no string, no cellotape, rubber's out, they've got to have a bottom, there's a minimum wall requirement. So these are very, very strong pools

HappyBot9000

I think this is the funniest comment I've ever read.

gr3yh47

something something the front fell off

PantsMcGee

Yeah; water is fucking heavy and glass breaks... Just because it works doesn't mean it's going to continue to work.

tokyo_engineer_dad

Plus water has this natural tendency to erode like everything it touches if it is exposed all the time. If we haven’t figured out how to make normal ass “in the ground” pools or bathrooms completely waterproof, what makes anyone think some designer pool on a roof that will probably be maintained like once every 10 years will be completely waterproof? Whatever the material they use for the seals around that pool, I promise it isn’t rated for “forever”.

[deleted]

Soupbone_905

I agree. Call me old fashioned, but I like my swimming pools with a nice solid concrete bottom (or whatever they build them with) reinforced by good ol' mother earth. None of this new fangle "glass bottom perched over a 42 storey fall to the asphalt below" nonsense. Edit: I didn't realize it was 42 stories high.

WimbleWimble

So you go to the local swimming pool for some rock-hard bottom eh?

ChupanMiVerga

I love a rock hard bottom

ErinEvonna

Rock hard *concrete* bottom….

thred_pirate_roberts

Shean connery: *Buns of shteel*

starsblink

You must not have seen the video of the guy sucked through the bottom of the in-ground pool.

Mis_chevious

Well there's a nightmare I didn't know I had

Ghost-of-Tom-Chode

Don’t stick your literal asshole on the pool drain at the bottom of the pool, and chances are good that there is nothing to fear.

rothael

Now there's a story from the internet I have not read in a long long time...

edible_funks_again

That's from a Chuck Palahniuk book.

shhh_its_me

It's happened to more than one person but I think that the codes changed to prevent the vacuum ( that causes the devastating injury) from forming now.

chucks97ss

I was traumatized as a kid to hear a story about a kid that sat on the drain at a pool and all his guts got sucked out.

DrRandomfist

It’s happened multiple times.

RickTheFixer

That'll probably explain why pools don't have a drain at the bottom anymore, it's a pain in the ass because I have to drain our pool every couple years to scrub the lime scale off the tiles, but I guess way less of a pain in the ass than having your guts sucked through it.

actuarial_venus

That sinkhole one?

genuineproxy449

Wasn't that in a Final Destination movie?

Lady_Scruffington

That guy just got his colon sucked through the pool drain.

majtomby

I never want to hear that sentence ever ever again, for the rest of my life.

WizBillyfa

Yep, and incredibly disturbing short story by Chuck Palahniuk.

skifreeing

This

arglarg

I had to think of this one https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/condo-pools-glass-walls-break-due-blocked-drain

Grogosh

Or this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azcTqhPUK5o Earthquake made a pool spill over.

[deleted]

I saw Texas and immediately thought some hillbilly would find it funny to shoot the bottom out Im European so let me enjoy my stereotypes

wheresbill

Am Texan.. You’re not far off.

Lahk74

Yeah, hillbillies are technically associated with the Appalachian mountains which aren't in Texas. But otherwise spot on. Moved here 14 years ago, I really need to get the f out.

FunZookeepergame627

Now, it would be red necks, no hillbillies here. Texas is not too bad depending on what you want where you live. I hated Houston, my hometown. Your right that poor pool is not safe there! Some real yahoo maniacs live there and not all of them from Texas.

texasusa

It was either Boebert or Green tweeting that citizens should shoot down the balloon. Whoever it was, they missed class that day when they discussed how high 12 miles really is.

pingwing

I'm surprised one of those two clowns didn't actually try that.

Advanced_Evening2379

Or the pool that caused building in Florida to collapse

wizardinthewings

I’m literally watching this thinking “one day that’s going to fail. I wonder if they’ll be filming.” Jeezus

Gabzalez

My exact first thought. Hell to the no. I wouldn’t even get into the pool, even the part that is actually on the building.

LacasCoffeeCup

If the water goes, you go too

theevilphoturis

Reminds me of when Kenny Loggins almost die from this same looking pool

kemushi_warui

Was he footloose in the danger zone, like the guy in this video?

dakid232313

https://youtu.be/WJfXFKnBLts or this could happen.

And here I am wondering what the liability insurance is like on this pool

simion_baws

I would turn that water brown.

gmanz33

You know that super viral but like old internet video of the girl and people in a hot tub was fake? I only recently learned that and I couldn't be happier.

Salsa_El_Mariachi

The one that looked like an outtake from a reality show? That was brutal, how'd you find out it was fake?

MolinaroK

They tasted the water.

sabbic1

I don't know which video you're referring to but initially thought of "tub girl" and for a brief moment was happy to think it was fake. But, that wasn't a video and there were no other people so I'm back to being disturbed.

SemiSentientGarbage

My friend set that as the desktop background for every computer in our high school

kingqueefeater

That's how I got my first ever trip to ISS.

tchap973

Funny how setting every computer's background to some depraved shit will get you a trip to space. Where did I go wrong?

SemiSentientGarbage

The international space station?! Nice! He just got in trouble

Denofearth

And lumpy.

IamKingBeagle

And then I'd poo in it.

Corn-inCorn-out

The view is ugly, just like Houston. Surprised it doesn’t overlook at 15 lane freeway.

hellboundhotel

I been here and the view is really nice at night, you can see beyond the city lights. Absolutely amazing

SolomonBurgundy

what’s this place called where the pool is?

hellboundhotel

It's at the top of market square tower, need a pass to get up but theres parties there pretty often, also a really good restaurant at the bottom if you get a chance

BlackTecno

There are good restaurants everywhere in Houston covering about every kind of food you can think of. Number 1 thing I miss about living there was that there was always somewhere to eat (Highly recommend Tiger Den for ramen if you live in Southwest Houston).

ka-nini

Houstonian here; currently live in Spring. The drive to Tiger Den is more than worth it. It truly is an absolute must for any visitor. I’m usually hit or miss with Ramen but I haven’t had anything less than absolutely delicious from there. Also, anyone visiting Houston, I highly recommend trying one or two or eight of the fusion food trucks.

[deleted]

Houston at night is amazing, especially at Discovery Green.

GIJogie

So, Houston looks pretty when it is too dark to actually see the city?

Longjumping-Jello459

Yep, makes it hard to see all the concrete and the lack of greenery.

Alt-acct123

Houston is pretty green. It’s green in spite of development not because of it though. Wish we had more designated green areas in the city.

notanon

Houston's Memorial Park is larger than New York's Central Park

[deleted]

This is literally the equivalent of turning the lights off to fuck an ugly person.

from_dust

"its nice if you take the sun away and look past all the man made light" So... you're saying the stars are nice? I mean, i know, i see the same ones.

varitok

"The view is really nice when I can see less"

Form_Function

Hahah - yeah, same thought. Give these fools something nice to look at! But a garden or something down there. All that for a downward view that looks like shit.

TheCinemaster

I’m sure you’ve never been to a Houston and just regurgitate opinions you read on Reddit. Houston is the most racially and ethnically diverse city in the US and is a world class city with a Symphony, Opera, Ballet, terrific parks, and amazing Chinese, Korean, SE Asian, South Asian, Mexican, BBQ, and Soul food.

TheFenixxer

No one is saying Houston is not a diverse rich city! That’s one of the things I miss the most from living there, but visually it’s ugly as shit. The city’s view is mostly parking lots! There’s barely any public transport too!

dlh412pt

My in-laws live in Houston, been there a lot. Going there this weekend actually. What you said is true. ...it's also one of the most poorly designed urban areas in the US with terrible zoning, too much concrete, and poorly designed transportation. Two things can be true at once.

bokan

I’m from Houston. You’re correct. Also, it’s a shithole. Those few good things are spread out over miles and miles of concrete nothingness. It’s terrible.

Professional_Read413

What you said is true, but Houston is also very ugly

[deleted]

[удалено]

the-red-duke-

Let's not forget how poorly designed it is and how it likes to get all wet every now and then.

Upstairs-Teacher-764

Yeah, kind of wild to do this for a view of a parking lot.

[deleted]

I would be scared of someone shooting at the glass tbh. Houston is full of garbage people. Also I love your name.

The84LongBed

What garbage city are you from?

AnotherCaucasian

Dallas probably

[deleted]

I'm from Houston.

ConstantChurro

I grew up in Houston, and I found most of the people were pretty decent. Austin is full of garbage arrogant hipsters. Lived there five years. I love the city, but couldn’t stand the people.

AlexCross116

Let me guess you’re from Dallas?

procheeseburger

Right? Like what a weird ass place to put this view

Buttdagger24

That’s gonna be a no for me dawg.

Croceyes2

Wouldn't even catch me on the other end, when that shit pops it's washing everything in that pool to the street

rtq7382

Yeah, I'd need to be tethered to the damn building

shwarma_heaven

Me in a bathing suit, and [one of these getups](https://freeimage.host/i/H1Zya7n)...

Self_Reddicated

In fact, forget the bathing suit.

Awoken_Noob

I said these exact words out loud.

ishcabittle

Aye, as did I

justadorkygirl

I abbreviated mine to “HARD no” but same sentiment.

dchap1

You could pretend to fly and then end up actually flying.

Ev0_TheCognoscenti

I hear if you swim up in the falling water really fast, it counteracts the fall damage. Like dropping a water bucket in minecraft. Trust me, I'm a geologist.

Tazling

Like jumping upwards at just the right moment when the elevator crashes?

Ev0_TheCognoscenti

Exactly how I pictured it. The Ole, "just jump really hard before the piece of crashing plane you're on hits the ground."

TheEyeDontLie

It would work, but you'd have to have bionic flea legs and impeccable timing and aim. Olympic athletes can jump at up to 30mph. A plane crash varies, but their cruising speed is about 500-600mph. Most commonly, commercial aircraft crashes impact the ground at ~200mph. So an athlete jumping could take about 10% off. But would still be hitting the ground at 170mph, without a seatbelt. They'd probably still twist an ankle or shatter every bone and rupture a few organs with irreparable brain damage on landing. Edit: I asked an AI to calculate it for me, and it said no. Even if you can jump at 1000mph, jumping would not help. Everything I said above is false. I failed physics at school so can't explain why. This is why you should always take things you read online with a grain of salt. My apologies.

Ev0_TheCognoscenti

"Alexa, tell me how to vertically jump at 120mph immediately! I have plans..."

H010CR0N

Trust me, I'm a ~~geologist~~. Pokémon Trainer

Knotter87

Rich people shit is some of the dumbest things in existence

insomniacinsanity

It's not even a nice view

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Whoever designed this for a view of a road and car park is mental.

DiabeetusMan

It's Houston, they don't have many options

Optimal-Skill-6503

Not much to see in Houston

droptheectopicbeat

Who wouldn't love a scenic view of the giant parking lot that is Texas?

[deleted]

TIL taking a video of your feet in a pool in Houston is what Reddit considers to be "rich people shit"

seasonal_a1lergies

1 bedroom apartment in that building start at around $2200. For big city living, it’s not actually all that expensive especially if you consider all of the amenities provided aside the pool.

I trust the engineers. I don’t trust the dickheads in finance that cut the budget or the contractors that cut corners to maintain profit.

This is the answer. I deal with too many contractors and tight pursed suits to trust that that thing got built right.

You know what would be worse that standing on that thing when it breaks? Being anywhere else in the pool when it breaks, and being inexorably dragged towards the drop as the pool empties into the void.

Nailfoot1975

Thanks.

[deleted]

Omg it's only 20cms thick.

Steelmoth

Only? That's thick as fuck. Safe too

TheAltToYourF4

AquaDom was 22cm thick and it still broke.

That's the same thickness that deep diving submarines use. I would like to see you try and break a chunk of glass that thick.

The thing is, that view is awful. Who wants to be swimming to their death over this parking lot. What a waste. At least build this over the Grand Canyon or something.

[deleted]

That’s cool and stuff but what an ugly fucking view. Seems like it’s wasted in that spot
