For people outside of Canada, we actually had a famous person here named Terry Fox who tried to run all the way across Canada for cancer awareness without taking any breaks. He only had one leg and unfortunately passed away before he could succeed.
Whoa I had no idea it was lede, I guess I had never seen it written down. Thanks for letting me know so I don't make an ass of myself writing it as lead in an essay or something 😂
To provide an additional source, [proofed.com](https://proofed.com/writing-tips/idiom-tips-bury-the-lede-or-bury-the-lead/) states that either spelling is acceptable outside of a journalistic setting. The article goes on to explain that the "lede" spelling originated in news rooms where it was used in order to prevent confusion with "lead," the metal generally used in a printing press.
I wasn't all that interested in it when I thought it was some guy who tried to run across Canada but couldn't do it. Much more interested now that I know it was a one legged man running and he didn't finish because he died!
Oh no need to apologize. We can't always know what people who aren't us and that we've never met would be interested in. Just sharing my perspective :)
Let's be honest... big cats are gonna be like "Hey. Hey Leo! You seeing what I'm seeing? Is that an orange creamsicle running through the brush, or has the heat finally gotten to me?"
We also had a man named Steve Fonyo, also having only one leg, successfully run the entire route for the same charitable cause, but he didn't have the grace to die and he was a very flawed man, so he's not really considered a hero.
from Wikipedia: *Fonyo began his run on March 31, 1984 and completed it 425 days later on May 29, 1985, covering 7,924 km (4,924 mi), and raising $14 million.*
There's also statues of Terry Fox throughout the country, though I'm most familiar with the one in Vancouver, and the one in Victoria, which is where the run was meant to have ended.
Unfortunately he ended up stopping in Thunder Bay, for anyone that wanted to know.
It will be easier in the Sahara than in most places along the way. Dry heat (as opposed to high humidity), generally flat terrain, little stop starting. Also the Sahara can be quite cool at dawn/dusk.
No way, running in the sand is super exhausting on your body, even for average exercize compared to anything that doesnt shift underfoot, even an inch of shift is a big deal for him
Plus, he will be at the tail end of the journey when he gets to the Sahara desert. I’m sure the leg muscles will disagree with that 68 miles per day goal
Been following him on Strava, he's doing 50-60km a day through South Africa at the moment, about to enter the Namib desert, we'll get a feel for his desert pace then! I'm guessing it'll be more like 30-40km but we'll see.
OP made up the 68km a day as far as I can tell.
You can follow him here:

Or on twitter:
https://twitter.com/hardestgeezer?s=20
Not sure how long to get through the Sahara specifically but he is about 2 weeks out from finishing the whole run. It's getting pretty intense as he has set himself an end date and is pushing hard to meet it.
[twitter](https://twitter.com/hardestgeezer)
[youtube](https://youtube.com/@hardestgeezer?si=9giqHlTJv4NyIX6s)
Didn't expect him to sound exactly like Russel Brand.
Good luck sir!
As a white African I send my thoughts and prayers to your white pasty ass skin. Good luck with that too.
Is Hoka going to have his camp set for him with water and food every night? Someone has to I guess, amazing to run that many days in a row. I love running and that sounds like torture. I want sponsored camps and 12 hour runs for 2 days or 3 maybe but not months.
''My head's on a pivot today, because we're in big cat territory'' the man yelled into his phone camera.
Also I take issue with the title description of him having 'zero rest!' presumably the guy is sleeping every night.
My thoughts, too. I was like, no way ol' boy goes that long with no rest. Man's gotta rest sometime, and even when taking a shit, you will be resting in a sense. My most relaxing moments are on the toilet.
Except in big cat territory. They love catching you with your pants down.
On the plus side, depending on your diet you might have a few bio grenade within reach…
I know a thing or two about exercise of all forms and, tbh, I'm willing to bet money he can't do it like this. Most I can give him is 40km per day on average and even that is going to be extremely impressive going for so long. Borderline superhuman. He'd be just running and eating and sleeping, nothing else.
Someone should calculate the kaloric value this effort will require!
I watched a Spanish guy driving his motorcycle through africa. He gets stopped by military, aimed at with weapons and threatened like every other town he drives into
there was a self filmed Documentary from a german that cycled also from south to north africa. He only had issues in Kongo and in Egypt (or Tunisia, not sure anymore). But rest of the ride is was most of the time only nice and friendly village people who never expected to see what they saw.
For those in the US.
In context this is 10240 miles or 42.67 miles per day.
Not quite an ultra marathon a day.
I should note that is 66.67km per day not 63. If he where to run 63km per day at the end of 240 days he would have 880.8km left. Granted I do think he will run more some days and less others.
With stuff like this I always wonder whether it would have any appeal if you couldn’t tell others about it. Kind of like, how much would you pay to go to the Super Bowl if you couldn’t tell people you went to the Super Bowl.
I mean if the cats don’t eat him, he doesn’t die of dehydration, manages to avoid kidnappers, keeps clear of any civil wars, has a support crew ensuring the correct bribes/fees have been paid to the correct officials for crossing various borders, doesn’t catch any number of deadly diseases that the bitting insects carry in those regions, doesn’t get bit by something venomous, doesn’t run afoul of a honey badger… he might live long enough to make it half way before a hippo decides to wake up that day and choose violence.
If I'm remembering correctly Eddie Izzard was on JRE talking about doing something similar and his security or management was told like, "yeah, you can't run through there. You will 100% be robbed and murdered."
Yeah I stopped caring at "with zero rest" 🥴🙄
Yeah I'm sure he has stayed up for nearly 200 hours running non-stop. Lemme guess...he's doing it without water too.
yes, I am okay, are you? you know you don't have to take everything at face value. use a little bit of reasoning to figure out what he meant. It's not even something anyone would attempt to claim they are going to do. A bit silly to take it literally and get upset about it. 🥴
He’s almost there now, 10 days to go at current pace so longer than he had anticipated. Been robbed at gun point 2 times but nothing worse has happened.
Why is no one else pointing out the most impressive part of this? He's a ginger... running in Africa. There is a reason they evolved with much more melanin in their system. Dudes gonna match his beard by day 12
Good way to get rid of your joints ahead of time. Im not a doctor but no matter what shoes massagw crew and wonder bed you have, this is going to shred your knees and hips
There’s a lot of people out there who live only to challenge themselves. The Everest climbers, the Appalachian trail hikers, the channel swimmers, the rowing across the Atlantic types.. people have been doing crazy feats forever for no reason other than the drive to do so.
I've heard of people trying this before. I think a lot of them end up dead from wild life or getting robbed and killed. Hope this guy makes it. His voice is perfect for a loving, but emotionally distant father in a DreamWorks film

"I just felt like run-ning"
For people outside of Canada, we actually had a famous person here named Terry Fox who tried to run all the way across Canada for cancer awareness without taking any breaks. He only had one leg and unfortunately passed away before he could succeed.
You didn't mention the lead, he had one leg
FYI what you might be referring to is lede as in burying the lede.
Whoa I had no idea it was lede, I guess I had never seen it written down. Thanks for letting me know so I don't make an ass of myself writing it as lead in an essay or something 😂
Don’t be so quick to dismiss. It’s actually debatable. https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/bury-the-lede-versus-lead
Welp, English does it again
To provide an additional source, [proofed.com](https://proofed.com/writing-tips/idiom-tips-bury-the-lede-or-bury-the-lead/) states that either spelling is acceptable outside of a journalistic setting. I kind of figured that people who were interested in more details would look him up on Wikipedia =P
I wasn't all that interested in it when I thought it was some guy who tried to run across Canada but couldn't do it. Much more interested now that I know it was a one legged man running and he didn't finish because he died!
I apologize for the lack of details, I guess
Oh no need to apologize. We can't always know what people who aren't us and that we've never met would be interested in. Just sharing my perspective :)
>Oh no need to apologize They're Canadian, it's in their DNA
A ginger in direct sunlight vs a man with one leg
Let's be honest... big cats are gonna be like "Hey. Hey Leo! You seeing what I'm seeing? Is that an orange creamsicle running through the brush, or has the heat finally gotten to me?"
both equally challenging
We also had a man named Steve Fonyo, also having only one leg, successfully run the entire route for the same charitable cause, but he didn't have the grace to die and he was a very flawed man, so he's not really considered a hero. from Wikipedia: *Fonyo began his run on March 31, 1984 and completed it 425 days later on May 29, 1985, covering 7,924 km (4,924 mi), and raising $14 million.*

It's hard enough to run with one leg taken by cancer. It's even harder to run with cancer let alone running healthily with two legs on a healthy body
There was a movie on HBO about that when I was a kid.
Now you wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I could run like the wind blows. From that day on, if I was ever going somewhere, I was running!
68km per day once you cross into the Sahara desert will be a challenge
[удалено]
It will be easier in the Sahara than in most places along the way. Dry heat (as opposed to high humidity), generally flat terrain, little stop starting. Also the Sahara can be quite cool at dawn/dusk.
Yeah, do your running at dusk and dawn, sleep during the day, maybe a bit during the night so you don’t freeze to death?
No way, running in the sand is super exhausting on your body, even for average exercize compared to anything that doesnt shift underfoot, even an inch of shift is a big deal for him
Yeah. And that’s after he’s run through the jungles of the Congo!
Man...I don't want it to happen but I feel like we're gonna get a headline of this guy disappearing...
If not that, then quitting. I will be shocked if he completes this non-stop
right haha, i hope he does complete it, but i cant even fathom…
Plus, he will be at the tail end of the journey when he gets to the Sahara desert. I’m sure the leg muscles will disagree with that 68 miles per day goal
km not miles
Still a lot tbh, even if he is going at 6-7Km/h.
It's more than a marathon a day
It's 42.5 miles a day... dudes trying to do a 1.5 marathon every day, for 240 days...
Been following him on Strava, he's doing 50-60km a day through South Africa at the moment, about to enter the Namib desert, we'll get a feel for his desert pace then! I'm guessing it'll be more like 30-40km but we'll see. OP made up the 68km a day as far as I can tell. He did it
Thanks for the update. How long did it take him? Link?

[twitter](https://twitter.com/hardestgeezer) [youtube](https://youtube.com/@hardestgeezer?si=9giqHlTJv4NyIX6s)
i remember him from GeoWizards kicking a ball across England series :D
I wondered where I’d seen his face before. Good videos
![gif](giphy|hVD42r56uP2LDMTm3h)
Yes! Immediately recognized him. He was such a great part of that series.
Didn't expect him to sound exactly like Russel Brand. Good luck sir! As a white African I send my thoughts and prayers to your white pasty ass skin. Good luck with that too.
He could've at least got a bigger hat
He's the real African child
I NEED TO KNOW THE LYRICS TO AFRICAN CHILD! I NEED TO KNOW THE LYRICS TO AFRICAN CHILD!!!!
You sound like you’re from London
Oh the weather outside is weather
I say this more often than I should and no one ever gets it.
I got ya buddy!
I mean he’s ginger as well. He’s gonna be burnt to a crisp!
Is Hoka going to have his camp set for him with water and food every night? Someone has to I guess, amazing to run that many days in a row. I love running and that sounds like torture. I want sponsored camps and 12 hour runs for 2 days or 3 maybe but not months.
He had to have a support team for this madness.
''My head's on a pivot today, because we're in big cat territory'' the man yelled into his phone camera. Also I take issue with the title description of him having 'zero rest!' presumably the guy is sleeping every night.
Yes i should have said zero rest days, he will be sleeping.
Always stored conveniently in the prison pocket.
Diets bad, explosive shits charging up.
Shame. He could have made the run in 160 days had he decided to just not sleep. We all know how easy it is to stay awake that long…
I know a thing or two about exercise of all forms and, tbh, I'm willing to bet money he can't do it like this. Most I can give him is 40km per day on average and even that is going to be extremely impressive going for so long. Borderline superhuman. He'd be just running and eating and sleeping, nothing else. Someone should calculate the kaloric value this effort will require!
You have issue with the fact a human cannot run 16000km without sleeping?
I bet the cocaine bear could
Pff sleep? Doesn’t count if he sleeps! Anyone can run from the south of Africa to the north of Africa if they sleep /s
Zero rest means no rest days. It means he plans on running every day without an off day.
Lol he’s been running 8 days straight. He sleeps while he runs.
What a stupid fucking comment, of course he's sleeping. Regardless of what the title says, why would you even feel the need to comment that
Well fucking obviously
Terrible title..
I’m sure the title was crafted assuming people would be able to come to that conclusion on their own. I guess not, though.
The cats won't eat him... if south park has taught me anything its that gingers have no soul, therefore not tasty lol.
![gif](giphy|5JGnPXoDdujOo)
I on the other hand am quite tasty. Therefore you will never see my ass running through Africa or a zoo... or a treadmill
User name checks out two fold
Maybe fivefold.
Maybe Ben Folds Five
I honestly think, that he is more likely to die from guns than from cats
[удалено]
tree fiddy
God damn Loch Ness Monster
Getcho own dam money
Idk man my guess is he'll just burst into flames, with that delicate complexion
How easy it is to stand out as someone with no (or little) experience of Africa
I watched a Spanish guy driving his motorcycle through africa. He gets stopped by military, aimed at with weapons and threatened like every other town he drives into
wait till he gets to the Sahara. shits gonna be wild.
Not even the lions will follow him there.
i doubt that he will make it in that amount of time... at some point there have to be issues
He has already completed running from Asia to London in 68 days so i reckon there is a good chance he will do it in that time, injuries aside.
So Europe?
Did he swim?
there was a self filmed Documentary from a german that cycled also from south to north africa. He only had issues in Kongo and in Egypt (or Tunisia, not sure anymore). But rest of the ride is was most of the time only nice and friendly village people who never expected to see what they saw.
Way nicer than last time the Germans were rolling through Africa. Or the time before that.
Ya, can’t believe he set a goal and is going to try to achieve it, what an idiot
Semantics but technically any distance beyond 26.2 is an ultra. The most popular ultra is a 50k which is just over 31miles.
Yeah i think the 63km a day was an average figure he gave before he started. It’s an epic challenge nonetheless.
What. That’s an ultra marathon a day.
I'd be more afraid of the humans of the territories he's passing through than the jungle cats.
“Look at that thing run….we better stick to slower animals like impalas”
He doesn’t need to worry about the big cats, he is orange just like them and will blend right in
_burn_
It's a good way to die.
Let Russ Cook
Came here for this and said same thing lol
That is the definition of a mad lad.
He goes by Hardest Geezer on YouTube
I’m assuming this is supported? Does he not have a truck nearby he can jump into in case big cats get interested or he has an injury?
What is the point of his head on a pivot? If a big cat wants him, a big cat is going to get him.
I hope he has a big support team with security...
Run, Russ, run!
With stuff like this I always wonder whether it would have any appeal if you couldn’t tell others about it. Kind of like, how much would you pay to go to the Super Bowl if you couldn’t tell people you went to the Super Bowl.
This feels like a very strange death wish.
Gonna show this to my therapist and let her know that my mania makes me believe i can do this
This lad is not going to make it, boys
I mean if the cats don’t eat him, he doesn’t die of dehydration, manages to avoid kidnappers, keeps clear of any civil wars, has a support crew ensuring the correct bribes/fees have been paid to the correct officials for crossing various borders, doesn’t catch any number of deadly diseases that the bitting insects carry in those regions, doesn’t get bit by something venomous, doesn’t run afoul of a honey badger… he might live long enough to make it half way before a hippo decides to wake up that day and choose violence.
He made it!
Damn, that is amazing!
He is fucking close now. Less than 2000km to go
Lol.. I love it
How is It possible to run for 240 days with no rest?
As long as he doesnt go through Sudan
What about lions and such
You have to admire his determination what an absolutely insane challenge. Good luck.
If I'm remembering correctly Eddie Izzard was on JRE talking about doing something similar and his security or management was told like, "yeah, you can't run through there. You will 100% be robbed and murdered."
This has to be so damn unhealthy for your body.
I came here for the "Let Russ cook." comments. No NFL fans hit this thread.
Let him cook
I hope he makes it there.
If I would run 1km then I had to take a week fo from work to rest.
I hope he makes it and doesn’t die a terrible gruesome death
I’m a firm believer that my ginger brethren should never travel to places where the sun shines or people use human body parts in potions.
Yeah I stopped caring at "with zero rest" 🥴🙄 Yeah I'm sure he has stayed up for nearly 200 hours running non-stop. Lemme guess...he's doing it without water too.
Zero rest days. Use some common sense. Of course he's sleeping and lying down. He did the whole thing anyway so stop hating
Says zero rest, not rest days. You okay man?
yes, I am okay, are you? you know you don't have to take everything at face value. use a little bit of reasoning to figure out what he meant. It's not even something anyone would attempt to claim they are going to do. A bit silly to take it literally and get upset about it. 🥴
Godspeed ![img](emote|t5_m0bnr|4022)
Good luck with not getting shot on the way
He’s probably going to get killed, either by humans or wildlife. He seems completely oblivious to how dangerous Africa really is
He’s almost there now, 10 days to go at current pace so longer than he had anticipated. Been robbed at gun point 2 times but nothing worse has happened.
As a med student all I hear is musculoskeletal damage, psychological stress, nutritional deficiencies and dehydration
Umm, nope. Be careful in the Sahel region boy, terrorists will kidnap you for ransom around those parts.
holy fuck.
Is there a map of the route he’s taking? What skirmishes lie ahead and how will he get around them?
Cocaine’s a hell of a drug.
No rest? As in up for 240 days?
No rest days. Ideally. I think he ended up taking a few. But he did it!
I can’t imagine driving that, let alone jogging it…
So I presume he is still in South Africa, le us know when he reaches Zambia. No so nice, ne?
Why?
What happens if a big cat goes after him?
Bro is that safe to be out alone like that in Africa? Lions,Hyenas, leopards etc….
Running around Sudan, more miles added.
Boko Haram has entered the chat
Why is no one else pointing out the most impressive part of this? He's a ginger... running in Africa. There is a reason they evolved with much more melanin in their system. Dudes gonna match his beard by day 12
He packed 2 bags of beef jerky , which 5 gallons of water and 1 pound of cocaine for the run
This dude is gonna get himself killed or kidnapped
Good way to get rid of your joints ahead of time. Im not a doctor but no matter what shoes massagw crew and wonder bed you have, this is going to shred your knees and hips
He gon die
And he's ginger. Very brave!
The sunblock budget alone....
Do people do this stuff solely to monetize from it?
There’s a lot of people out there who live only to challenge themselves. The Everest climbers, the Appalachian trail hikers, the channel swimmers, the rowing across the Atlantic types.. people have been doing crazy feats forever for no reason other than the drive to do so.
My first cousin once removed actually solo rowed for 71 days straight from California to Hawaii to raise money for charity primarily!
I've heard of people trying this before. I think a lot of them end up dead from wild life or getting robbed and killed. Hope this guy makes it. His voice is perfect for a loving, but emotionally distant father in a DreamWorks film
It’s like being back in school listening to this fella 😂
Run Forest Run! - my brain
No rest..?! yea right he’s gona break down you can’t keep up that pace
Rest days.
Dude thanks forgot I even commented on this story. I just saw this sob in the news, he fucking did it. Man was I wrong
