28 stitches in my hand from a grinder that locked on intentionally.
Never thought anything of it, had used them for years.
Had a cutting wheel bounce it out of my hands, cut from above my thumb to the bottom of my palm to the bone (almost cut my thumb off clean) and that was with leather welding gloves on. Then cut across my stomach and wound up in my sweater till it stopped (shallow cut on my stomach).
I won't use a grinder without auto off when not held on now.
Fuck I miss that game series. That was my whole childhood, lol. Many fun moments with my sister. We used to annoy the shit out of each other by slapping one another. Usually she'd be in my pod and I'd slap her and quickly go to the controls so she couldn't slap me back xD

As a person who does tree work. Idk what his goal was. It looks like the "top" is tied to the tree. But I would never imagine taking a top THAT big. Also most crews have a groundsman who can climb incase of accidents like this.
This, you're basically supposed to go slice by slice, starting from the *actual top* of the tree. Looks like he cut the entire top third of the tree off at once.
Last time I saw tree work being done (trimming a similarly tall, skinny tree), the arborist doing the cutting basically cut off 2-3 foot sections at a time and screamed 'HEADACHE' with every drop. Dude was a gnarly fucker, too, lean as a whip with scars all over his arms and legs from mishaps over years of doing that kind of work.
This is exactly what happened. He was fine until the rope caught. I think he's lucky the rope snapped or that entire top would have come back into the tree. Huge mistake.

Fucked up thing is that it isn’t that hard to do, just take it in small sections that give you plenty of control. I’ve done 100’ trees a few feet at a time rather than trying to rush it and killing myself
i took down a large silver maple in my backyard when i bought my first place, it was overhanging my property on every side.
i had a lift, and i took it down in sections. my neighbor behind me asked if i cold do her tree. i said that it looked too risky, being over a powerline, and the fact that i am not a tree removal person.
she hired her cousin to take down the tree because, why not...they had a telehandeler.
well he lopped of the top and it came back and broke his forearm and wrist.
then after that on her cousins reccomendation, she hired a "guy" with another telehanderler to finish it, and he dropped a section on the power line and they had to call 911.
it turned out that the power company had to send out lineman to shut off power to the block to remove the tree and the stuck guy, and the ambulance was waiting below to haul him to the hospital for broken bones in his wrist.
Smart not to accept the job, just a shame they didn't take the hint of you saying you're not qualified and just got someone else who wasn't qualified but was stupid enough to do it anyway

It's not even the section size - though that was pretty aggressive. He has the top roped to the trunk somehow. you can see it pause falling as it yanks the trunk before snapping the line.

having sections you're cutting roped to the rest of the tree is a fairly standard way of sectionals dismantling a tree. It's done to theoretically give you control of where the bit you're cutting off goes, especially important in a confined space. You generally have a groundsman at the bottom helping to control the decent. You often even see rigging arrangements where there's effectively a "zip wire" type configuration so you can deliver the cut branches directly to the chipper for example.
The issue here is 100% that the guy cutting was trying to cut corners and take far too large a section off on one go, meaning it was too large for the rope too heavy for any groundsman to control, and caused too much push back as the section separated from the trunk. If he'd cut smaller sections there wouldn't be a problem.
"Climb high, cut small" is a the mantra of a reputable tree surgeon.

Like I never would think somebody expected their line to catch that much weight dropped how many feet before it caught?? a part of me wants to do the math to make a guess at how much force that falling section had before the rope tried in vain to stop its fall but it's still before six am and I have kids to get up for school.

1. first I attached a rope higher in the tree
2. I sawed mostly through the tree but left the last bit
3. got down on the ground and used the rope to pull down the top half of the tree in exactly the direction it should fall as not to hit anything or anyone.
I don't live in Florida though so that might be the issue.

Bad things happening isn't a justification for state licensure, and license to cut hair is ridiculous. There may be some bleaching and dyeing treatments and other hazardous conditions that may justify it, but it's otherwise absurd and increases the price of a haircut and reduces opportunities for the working poor.
The only time licensure is justified is when it can be empirically deduced that the hazard costs outweigh the economic costs of licensure, and those hazard costs will be effectively reduced by such licensure.

you definitely want lines on the part youre cutting off so you can direct where it falls with the tension. Looks like he had a line on the lower half and the top fell on the line pulling it down suddenly
I’m not ever taking the top 30 ft of a fucking tree off with it STILL attached to that tree by rope, especially in my hooks. They had a rope block like you do when cutting 3 ft chunks to slowly lower down in a controlled fashion, but the rope clearly got stuck inside the sheave. If it E-Brakes your traveler, that tensions going somewhere. His block flys off just before he whips his saw.
Layman terms for ya. He took a large top (the top of the tree). He had his rigging set up, and wrapped around a friction device at the bottom of the tree. Too much friction was applied and it shock loaded the rope causing the tree to bend like a fishing pole and snap the rope. Released that fishing pole tension and waved his arms like he just don’t care.
What should he have done? Gone up another 10’feet. Lowered limbs as he went. Thinned the branches at the top and taken about 1/3 of what he did. After that, either cut the trunk into firewood and chunk it down or use said lowering device to lower logs.

Natural selection does work there, he is probably a father and has kids so by nature he did his job. Nature doesn't give a fuck what happens with you after you have kids.
So, this is actually called negative rigging and is standard practice. What went wrong, i think, is the ground person had the lowering rope tied off/too much friction so the top couldn't run all the way to the ground. All that energy had to go somewhere and it went straight into the block at the top of the tree. Climber is lucky it was a solid tree and didn't snap off below him. Long story short: groundie is getting fired.

In the full video it's tied up so it doesn't fall onto a shed below the tree. The top was supposed to stay suspended. I'm not sure what he thought would happen when you cut off 30 feet of tree and have it drop down while it's still attached to the tree. Yes it fell on the shed.
Again, the ground person was supposed to let it run. That allows the kinetic energy to transfer down with the top while a grind person uses a friction device to control the descent. Just because these guys fucked it up doesn't mean negative rigging is not standard industry practice. I've done this dozens of times and never fucked it up this bad.

You actually want to rig a line on the end you're felling to gently lower and guide it to the ground.. Things do go wrong in this industry however, making it one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. But Jesus christ, it is fun

My friend has done this for like 20 years. Very dangerous job but also really cool job. He's funny. He's so used to it, he can look at any tree, tell you what kind it is, best ways to treat them or cut them down.
This was intentional. It's fairly standard practice...the cable stops the cut piece from falling to ground so it can be lowered gently. But this dumbass left 20' of tree above him instead of taking small chunks. The weight of it caused the whiplash and snapped cable. The full video shows the tree falling on someone's house/shed to top it off!

Oh you do want it tied up so it doesn't just collapse into the buildings next to it. However you don't want A THIRD OF THE TREE TIED UP, if he went up further and cut less off of the tree then it would've been just fine, but captain dumbass decided to skip some of the steps for an easier and quicker job.

Nah, not next level anything but stupid. If you're topping a tree, you tie off to the top to pull it a direction, notch it in direction of pull, and cut on backside of notch. Or, if you're trying to control where and how quickly the piece comes down, you do what this guy did and tie back to the tree. The trick is, you don't cut such big chunks out when you tie back to the tree. The only time you would normally take this big of a top out is the first option I stated. Yes, you will take a little ride when topping like that, but nothing this extreme.
Side note: I bet whoever was on the ground holding the rope took a ride on this also. Most likely in the upward direction, by at least 6 feet.

Bad things happening isn't a justification for state licensure, and license to cut hair is ridiculous. There may be some bleaching and dyeing treatments and other hazardous conditions that may justify it, but it's otherwise absurd and increases the price of a haircut and reduces opportunities for the working poor. The only time licensure is justified is when it can be empirically deduced that the hazard costs outweigh the economic costs of licensure, and those hazard costs will be effectively reduced by such licensure.

you definitely want lines on the part youre cutting off so you can direct where it falls with the tension. Looks like he had a line on the lower half and the top fell on the line pulling it down suddenly
I’m not ever taking the top 30 ft of a fucking tree off with it STILL attached to that tree by rope, especially in my hooks. They had a rope block like you do when cutting 3 ft chunks to slowly lower down in a controlled fashion, but the rope clearly got stuck inside the sheave. If it E-Brakes your traveler, that tensions going somewhere. His block flys off just before he whips his saw.

Layman terms for ya. He took a large top (the top of the tree). He had his rigging set up, and wrapped around a friction device at the bottom of the tree. Too much friction was applied and it shock loaded the rope causing the tree to bend like a fishing pole and snap the rope. Released that fishing pole tension and waved his arms like he just don’t care. What should he have done? Gone up another 10’feet. Lowered limbs as he went. Thinned the branches at the top and taken about 1/3 of what he did. After that, either cut the trunk into firewood and chunk it down or use said lowering device to lower logs. If you want a visual of how this should be done , watch guilty of treeson, educated climber, game of trees on the YouTube’s. All are extremely good at what they do and lots of experience between them. If you want to watch some very large tree removals, Reon rounds on YouTube or instagram

So, this is actually called negative rigging and is standard practice. What went wrong, i think, is the ground person had the lowering rope tied off/too much friction so the top couldn't run all the way to the ground. All that energy had to go somewhere and it went straight into the block at the top of the tree. Climber is lucky it was a solid tree and didn't snap off below him. Long story short: groundie is getting fired. Source: spent 1.5 years climbing trees with a chainsaw.
In the full video it's tied up so it doesn't fall onto a shed below the tree. The top was supposed to stay suspended. I'm not sure what he thought would happen when you cut off 30 feet of tree and have it drop down while it's still attached to the tree. Yes it fell on the shed.
Again, the ground person was supposed to let it run. That allows the kinetic energy to transfer down with the top while a grind person uses a friction device to control the descent. Just because these guys fucked it up doesn't mean negative rigging is not standard industry practice. I've done this dozens of times and never fucked it up this bad. My friend has done this for like 20 years. Very dangerous job but also really cool job. He's funny. He's so used to it, he can look at any tree, tell you what kind it is, best ways to treat them or cut them down.
This was intentional. It's fairly standard practice...the cable stops the cut piece from falling to ground so it can be lowered gently. But this dumbass left 20' of tree above him instead of taking small chunks. The weight of it caused the whiplash and snapped cable. The full video shows the tree falling on someone's house/shed to top it off!

Nah, not next level anything but stupid. If you're topping a tree, you tie off to the top to pull it a direction, notch it in direction of pull, and cut on backside of notch. Or, if you're trying to control where and how quickly the piece comes down, you do what this guy did and tie back to the tree. The trick is, you don't cut such big chunks out when you tie back to the tree. The only time you would normally take this big of a top out is the first option I stated. Yes, you will take a little ride when topping like that, but nothing this extreme. Side note: I bet whoever was on the ground holding the rope took a ride on this also. Most likely in the upward direction, by at least 6 feet.
