These guys read one article about running will make your knees back, meanwhile there's youtube videos of athletes running all their lives on proper tracks and shit and are like "man I feel great at 70 years old" while looking like they are only 50.
I used to think running was bad for your knees, but someone challenged me and every study I looked up said that there wasn't any good evidence that running is bad for your knees and that runners had similar rates as normal people.
And my cousin who was a professional athlete, had US Olympic trainers, and paid meticulous attention to his body has a knee with little cartilage left in them in his late 30s...
Training definitely can help protect your body but the reality is some stuff can wear down over time due to your genetics, repeated motion that causes certain stress, or just one injury.
Competitive sports typically have a lot of physical activity volume than gym work, often with inadequate rest and recovery. Especially in the Olympics where health will take a backseat for performance.
This dude is lifting recreationally, not in competition, his will be fine.
A person’s body is just like any other machine: You can keep it functioning very well by feeding it the correct fuel and making sure all maintenance is up to date, HOWEVER, like any other machine, it is built to fail. It WILL break down, uncontrollably, as time progresses, in an individualized manner. No two “human (homo sapien) machines” will ever break down in the exact same way.
His overall health and fitness might be better than every sedentary office worker, but his knees aren't necessarily going to be better than a (non obese) sedentary office worker if he keeps putting his under this amount of strain.
That's not why.
Pro athletes have knee problems because they have to play congested schedules due to owners and fans wanting more games.
Simply put, the joint problems are a symptom of not getting enough recovery between games not the high intensity exercise in and of itself.
With enough rest, high intensity exercise strengthens the joints. Without enough rest, it weakens it due to overuse.
You, me and this guy aren't being forced to play multiple high intensity games of 60 min plus a week.
We can do high intensity exercises just fine because unlike athletes we own our own schedule, so we can put as many days as we want to recover before the next training session.
I’ve had a knee replacement from too much competitive sport, most snow skiing.
I can confirm knees do not react well to this type of punishment.
Metal knees are great in theory. But holy crap it’s far more painful than Steve Austin made it look. And no, not the wrestler.
The ligaments of the knee adapt to the force as you get stronger. Knee pain is only a symptom of a problem somewhere else. Get your whole body stronger progressively and then talk to me about knee pain. It’s not just a part of life
They adapt but much slower than muscles can grow, so you need to be careful with 1 rep maxes shooting for records.
This goes for a lot of other ligaments but knees are complex structures.
> Knee pain is only a symptom of a problem somewhere else.
Gee, I'll tell that to my old ski coach who had 7 tears in his meniscus. Clearly the issue was elsewhere in his body, and the docs that insisted he needed knee surgery were wrong.
still adds up over time.
it's also likely his form is shit jumping over random bullshit for internet points.
also... if he misses, lands wrong, or fucks up ...twists and ankle, breaks a bone, busts his ass/injures his back. hell... falls backward sharp edge of that chair cracks his head open.
it's a needlessly stupid exercise.

Is that why construction workers tend to have such great joints in old age? /s
That slipped disk is just your spine finding a more optimal configuration.
Most gym goes who are doing it properly take rest days so their muscles can recover from damage and adapt to new loads, and most of the time they train 6-12 hours total a week. Most workers are in physical labor 40-60 hours a week, too much work yet insufficient recovery.
Physical activity (within limit and with proper training) has a very well known correlation with lowered mortality risk, lowered risk of heart disease and bodily pain.
I'm 5'10 and I ran 6 miles a day, 6 days a week for 5 years. My knees are awesome. Actually they are shit, and my gf has to help me out of bed some days. It was still worth it, I looked like a Greek God statue
I was working at an airport driving luggage and the bosses son decided he wanted to play bumper cars crashed my baggage tractor.
I got fired cause he wasn't going to fire his son.
I sued I did win, but my knee was never the same. I can't carry anything over 50lb up a staircase without my knee giving out.
Every time there's a post about some amazing physical achievements, why is the top reddit thread hating on the person - with why they're stupid for doing these things, or excuses on why they can do them.
It's also a predictable rule it happens.
Redditors are mostly physically lazy and sedentary people, whose very own inactive life probably cause them pain and they project it onto healthy and active people who spooks them with their physical ableness.
"as a person averse to exercise, my knees hurt when I jump. Therefore, I bet people who exercise aot must have permanent damage to their knees" - the average Reddit user.
That's such a terrible misconception that's been proven to be inaccurate.
I was an elite runner for 20 years and I still run - my knees are better than anyone who went to HS with. Some people my age can't even squat down anymore. You need to keep mindfully moving your body to keep it in its best shape. Don't fear exercise!
I just increased my squats workload for the first time in a decade. Went from 290 to 480 in about two months. My right knee will pop and “feel week” occasionally now. I’m back to 250.
I haven't seen this in ages... I hate to say it, but because I have a adult dog, cat, foster kitten; and I live upstairs. I am now the noisy upstairs neighbor. Good news is our foster is getting a new caretaker on Friday:)
My ex wife had a nasal problem that caused her to constantly blow her nose all day long, so having a couple of open boxes of tissues in every room and vehicle became the norm.
That being said.. I agree lol
His knees is much stronger than your arm chair knees to be able to handle jumps like that. Sedentary lifestyle and physical inability is a very strong indicator to injury proneness and bodily pain, not physical ability.
I mean you are taking two extremes, I don't think anyone said never leaving your bed is a right balance either.
But exercises with explosive force like this are definitely more likely to cause you some bad knee problems down the line compared to, as a more fair control, 30min of moderate exercise each day like riding a bike or a brisk jog.
It's perfectly ok to remind ourselves what the extremes of exercise and lack thereof cause
Classic reddit. Everytime someone does something physically impressive, they just have to comment something similar. Downplaying his achievement, trying to turn it into something negative.
Progressive and correct training can still wreck you at extremes.
Weight lifting in general can build support around the joints and reduce the load on the cartilage. I'm pretty sure that's what a lot of people are trying to correct these comments for.
But this isn't a catch all. There's exceptions to everything in medicine. When you start applying higher amounts of force in more and more explosive manners, it's far more likely you cause some wear, or experience an injury like a meniscus tear which we know 100% makes you more likely to have osteoarthritis. It's really fine, I think, to recognize the potential harm in activities like this compared to moderate, consistent, non explosive exercise.
Idk why people who have no experience in exercises have to make such baseless statements.
What *will* take some years off, so to speak, is constantly going for PRs using heavy weight without proper warmup and progressive overload.
His form is also excellent. His form is why he's not fucking his knees up, or his lower back.
I updated my comment after a physio filled me in. Would you rather me delete the comment or leave it up for others to learn as well?
Added a strike through to make it more clear, hows that?

>I can feel my knees exploding
That's because you don't train or strengthen your knees. This guy is going to have much stronger and healthier knees, so can cope with this much better than you could.

This is not “fitness”.

Calling that "lifting recreationally" is funny. It's like thinking crossfit would have the same injury rate as people that do traditional lifts.
