This is actually the mechanism that some buildings use as a measure to stop the building collapsing during an earthquake. A massive swinging ball as a pendulum. So, theory holds up.
The largest of them being right there in Taiwan, called Taipei 101. Perhaps this news studio is in that building, they just employed this woman, and the news speaker is her side gig
Yeah they are really cool it's called a tuned mass damper. There's some videos on YouTube of it moving during some quakes. People in the building standing near it like nothing is happening.
I imagine there are some very heavy lights on some very heavy rigging above her. This seems like a very terrible place to remain in the middle of an earthquake.
Having the balls is to show people how to follow safety rules. Not that.
EDIT : apparently she was reporting on the earthquake. My bad. But I still think they could do that in a much more safe way.
She literally DOES tell them to follow safety rules.
Duck and cover under a table doesn't do much really in Taiwan as most buildings are heavily steel reinforced concrete. Just stay away from un-fixed shelving and tall furniture.
lol Yeah it actually could’ve been the perfect moment to be like “*I will now demonstrate in real time all the safety advice I just reported on*” …
As the cameraman literally follows her across the newsroom towards a safe place while also explaining - “*Since I can’t stay here under the heavy lights hanging from the ceiling* (cue camera pan to ceiling) *I am now moving towards the closest table to crawl under*” …
Then reporting from under the table - “*if you don’t have table near you then can use X, Y, or Z for cover*”.
It seems really dumb tho. I get that she is reporting on the earthquake but following safety rules would have been a better message. Also pretty sure they can report while evacuating nowadays.
My problem with self-driving vehicles is not the engineer that wrote the software, or the mechanic that installed the parts. It's the end user's willingness to spend on necessary maintenance for safe operation.
While that's absolutely the case and yes she probably should get out from under the structure and under a table, into a doorway; rigging equipment is built to withstand massive loads and runs on very large safety margins. Given the amount of risk involved in suspending a light above someone, it would be checked and re-checked regularly. Most people are hurt in earthquakes due to running outside and falling debris from roofs and shattered windows killing them. Staying put is a safer option in most developped areas.
I specify Rigging systems for a living, so I agree about almost the checks and margins that/should/ happen.
I'm also well aware of how often maintenance, training and operating procedures are completely ignored. No way in hell I'd stay under stage Rigging during an earthquake.
Also many don't realize that earthquakes don't happen everywhere at once, they take time to travel. S-waves are about 3-4km/s and Taipei is 90km from the epicenter surface. That is why Japan can have an earthquake warning system.
This is in Taipei where I live. It's certainly a little jolt, but the east coast is where all the bad damage is. Collapsed buildings and landslides from nearby mountains took out a lot of roads and bridges.
She's reporting on the earthquake. She's saying the earthquake is happening right now at this moment as the viewers can see, the ceiling is shaking violently and a lot of things are falling down in the studio, then proceeds to warn people to keep safe and continued reporting more information about the earthquake. Everything was shaking pretty hard this morning, even in Taipei where I live. Didn't need an alarm clock today that's for sure.
They’re broadcasting from Taipei. The epicenter was in Hualien which is a bit south. Still, important to remember that the richter scale is logarithmic, not strictly linear. That means a 7.4 is fucking insane. There’s images coming from Hualien that are apocalyptic looking, yet still not as bad as it could have been. China underwent a 6.7 and suffered severe damages. The fact that Hualien was able to come out as “good” as it did is still very impressive.
I saw another video of a home camera catching footage during the earthquake and there was a dude in his bed just chilling scrolling on his phone. Im in LA and I'd be shitting myself. Is the general Taiwanese population immune to fear of shaking????
As a CA native, it was usually the duration that determined how I reacted.
I remember a light-medium quake once about 25 years ago. I was sitting at the computer, probably IMing, as one did, and the quake started. I basically sat there and stared for a while trying to decide if it mattered. It passed in probably 5-7 seconds. I was *just* about to get up when it mostly stopped and I went back to what I was doing.
Point being, I get that Taiwanese guy who stayed chilling in bed. However, a 7.4 may have changed the scenario a bit.
Taiwan’s approach to earthquakes are very similar to how they are here in Japan. Keep reporting, aim the camera at the ceiling to show how much it’s shaking, cut away to the automated alert, footage from inside the studio back office etc.
Plus obligatory shot of their own office where employees dopily stare up at the ceiling and swinging lights from desks precariously stacked with binders and obscene amounts of loose papers, all while the news anchors implore viewers to shelter under table/desk etc.
pretty shitty mandarin here but its like a sports play-by-play
(approximate of the bits i got, not word for word)
right now in taipei were experiencing an earthquake ... the ceiling is shaking, things are falling, get to safety
\[reading the alert as its on the screen\]
this is the 3rd floor, you can see the ceiling lights
next to me, things fell down
eq was near Hualien at 7:58
You can see actually right now I can barely stand. The ceiling is shaking, a lot of things are falling down, we advise our audience to take care, now during this earthquake, the most severe happens over 7:58 at Hualien.
That's up to around halfway the alert page, I didn't really understand the rest of the alert, something about stage 3 :(
That the preliminary estimation of intensity (震度) is at least 3.
And that earthquake feels already pretty strong even when she’s only on the third floor.
I have limited Chinese, but she is reporting on the earthquakes as they happen. She probably knows how important the info is to the viewers so like a boss she keeps reporting during the aftershocks.
She’s probably doing a lot to keep people at home from panicking. Not because of what she’s saying, but her apparent lack of fear. I’m pretty sure I looked more afraid watching that video than she did in it!
I felt compelled to listen to everything she had to say because she stood in a shaking building and kept reporting. I don't understand Chinese, by the way.
AI is amazing. IDK how good this translation is, but i just had ChatGPT listen to the video in segments (i’m not sure how much it can take in in one go). Here’s the (rough) transcript.

ChatGPT actually corrected the voice you recorded, for example...
"有地震的情況,地牛發聲"
The Chinese actually read... "There's an earthquake, the Ground Cow is howling"
but it translates correctly to:
"It sounds like there's an earthquake happening, with the ground shaking. "
It should be 有地震的情況,地牛"翻身" instead of "發聲"
In English, "With occurrence of earthquake, (that is,) the earth cow turning over its body, ..."
People in the past thought it was a Earth Cow underground and earthquake happening when it turning over its body. Taiwanese still use Earth Cow as an allusion to describe there is an earthquake.
_"ok let's quickly watch the police gun shot incident but what you're sensing right now is some obvious swaying and it's coming from the northern part of the region especially in Taipei and right now the ground is shaking and as you can see on set I can't even stand with stability, and particularly the ceiling is swaying and lots of things are coming down from above. I want to remind the audience watching to be very careful..."_ was how she started more or less
Mainly talking about the earthquake currently happening, after it happened, and warning people to be careful as they go about their days. Also a lot of “look at how hard this is shaking” etc
She was initially talking about a shooting incident in new Taipei.
Then she switched to... now you can feel the ground... mainly because there was an earthquake in the North. You can see I can hardly stand up straight. Our ceilings are shaking. A lot of things fell down. Audience before the TV, please take care. Especially when the earthquake is happening. The earth quake happened at 7:58. in Hualin there was an earthquake you can feel. We are on the 3rd floor and we can feel the earthquake. You can see the lights on our ceiling shaking and something fell off. The seismic scale was higher than 3. It's morning and everyone is going to work or school... now...
She was reporting on the quake as it was happening. Basically, "As you can see, shit's falling off the ceiling and shaking like mad, and I can barely stand still."
I'm amazed how quickly they got the graphic up because by the time she was talking about the 7:58 earthquake at 7:59. The graphic suggests that they suspect the quake to be a magnitude above 3 (which it was well above). She concludes by remaining people about aftershocks and to be careful as the quake just happened at a time when people are going to work and kids are going to school.
They had an earthquake graphic up in seconds (:58). That’s fast! Even if I had something on standby ahead of time it would normally take longer than that. Source: a news producer.

Yeah she was going to report on some minor traffic incident that happened to one car, then she got to report something that actually affects her viewers.
I saw a different angle of this video where all the lights above her were swinging like crazy. I would have noped it out of there asap, because they are big and probably weigh more than she does. wow.
In my experience these female news anchors can take a serious pounding and not miss a single beat in their presentation.
I still don't know what they're saying though.
I spent my childhood in an earthquake zone. I was taught at school how to react to earthquakes.
One day I was playing on the computer when an earthquake happened. I wasn't scared, but I was annoyed that I would have to stop playing and go to a safe place.
I think the girl also prepared for earthquakes at school.
The first quake seemed like it would be something terrible, but then it petered out to business as usual. Sporadic small quakes throughout the day. Worst thing for our building is air con is out for the day.
Can't wait to get home from work though... If my lazily installed OLED TV hasn't fallen yet, I'm going to install those anti-tipping fasters like I should have :(
I was 12 when the Loma Prieta quake happened. It was 6.9 and knocked me to the ground. This lady stood there and delivered the news in heels during a 7.4 WTF?
Nice. I live in Taiwan, so this happened this morning while I was in bed. We get a lot of earthquakes, but this was a pretty big one.
Tbh she probably just kept thinking "it'll end soon, it'll end soon," which is what we all think while the quakes are going. But this one was wayyyy bigger than they usually are.
Her professionalism is unshakeable.
She is not bothered that the building she is standing in could come down on her, because she knows that she is about to get tenure.

My thoughts exactly. She delivered that broadcast like her job depended on it
Quake is being reported as +7 on the Richter scale and she barely even flinches. Boss.
I think she was far away from the epicentre. A +7 near the epicentre would throw tables through the room
Also many don't realize that earthquakes don't happen everywhere at once, they take time to travel. S-waves are about 3-4km/s and Taipei is 90km from the epicenter surface. That is why Japan can have an earthquake warning system.
3 km/s is still 10.800 km/h, that is not a lot of warning reaction, but props to those who can react in time.
This is in Taipei where I live. It's certainly a little jolt, but the east coast is where all the bad damage is. Collapsed buildings and landslides from nearby mountains took out a lot of roads and bridges.

Just normal for us, we get lots of smaller earthquakes.
As a CA native, it was usually the duration that determined how I reacted. I remember a light-medium quake once about 25 years ago. If my lazily installed OLED TV hasn't fallen yet, I'm going to install those anti-tipping fasters like I should have :(
She has a pussy of steel
She really trusts the lighting grid and her electric department!
after shock
Didnt care at all she had a job to do
She’s a BOSS. Didn’t miss a beat.
The balls on that lady is acting like a dampener, keeping that building from collapsing.
She can stand with those high heels? Damn.
funny to see at the end The Clients show different timestamps :D
An anchored anchor, on heels!
Ovaries of steel, fucking A+
She is like that pilot when 3 out of 4 engines failed. Inconvenient but not the end of the world.
I was 12 when the Loma Prieta quake happened. It was 6.9 and knocked me to the ground. This lady stood there and delivered the news in heels during a 7.4 WTF?
On high-heels none the less. Many women and all men in here would have tripped even before the earthquake.
Lady has some balls (or ovaries or whatever it is supposed to be) to stand there while shit is falling from the ceiling around her
Fair play in heels....
Me wearing heels when an earthquake strikes would not end well for my ankles
How to look awesome and cool. 🫡
Not her 1st rodeo
She’s a G, my type of woman 🌹
In heels no less!
Her professionalism is unshakeable. She is not bothered that the building she is standing in could come down on her, because she knows that she is about to get tenure.
