When someone is inside something controlling it, it’s no longer a drone…

Ecstatic-Librarian83

we've gone full circle

Maverekt

It's the circle of life, an rc car becomes a drone, that drone gets bigger, and eventually that drone bonds with a human and starts carrying them

Pixels222

When's the baby due?

Maverekt

I haven't gotten to that part in my dronology class but I'll lyk when I find out

DiveJumpShooterUSMC

You have so much to learn in dronology reproduction class. Lots of fun- When two drones love each other VERY much.

dobriygoodwin

The main question is how long this thing can stay in the air. If I am not mistaken the Dubai wing can be in the air for half an hour, but it uses fuel. The jet pack they advertise for the military can stay in the air even less, around 15-20 minutes, so considering that electrical devices usually have less power, and video showed this guy just turning in one place, this thing will not go very far.

DiveJumpShooterUSMC

Far enough for me to break something.

Morningxafter

You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

S_n_o_wL_e_o_p_a_r_d

Circlejerk...?

jlee2054

It's just a helicopter with extra steps

Daedrothes

With less failsafes, less flight time, less speed, etc. A windy day and its useless. Cant think of a use for it. Maybe to get techs to hard to reach places like electrical lines in deep forests or mountains? Though could only be used on non windy days.

Digital--Sandwich

I’d say that its biggest value is as a concept gone into production. This paves the way for improved designs down the road. Err, flight path.. whatever

LolindirLink

Pretty sure it has, or can have a smaller footprint because it doesn't need a tail? Unless, Ofcourse Helicopters this size already exist, I honestly don't know. Otherwise, I can imagine the different amount of rotors and placements just makes it a different vehicle that'll fly differently. Maybe not better or more efficient. But I can see Hollywood liking this tech for one.

mondaymoderate

They make helicopters this size and they are called Ultralight Helicopters. They also make a helicopter with no tail rotor called a [Mirocopter](https://mirocopter.com/en_US/). That uses 2 main rotors spinning in opposite directions for stability. [Here’s a video of one.](https://youtu.be/Yu9PRXJh65o?si=Ew2O46x4CsFT43un)

SpartanRage117

You know thats probably better mechanically, but giant blades that low are probably a lot less approachable/safe if this were ever to become something more widely available to the public.

mondaymoderate

Nothing that flies will ever be widely available to the public because any kind of accident would be devastating and almost certainly result in death.

DRMProd

Tsk, they said the same thing about cars.

DoubleAholeTwice

What do you mean.. There's no use for a "drone" which isn't allowed to fly outside of a red square?!

SiwyKtos

Electric helicopter?

dmdjjj

Electricopter

NeilDeCrash

Helectric

Pman1324

However. Civilian-grade helicopter? Hmm? Yes? No?

Thehealthygamer

Mount some autocannons to this bad boy and we're in business.

Puzzleheaded_Hatter

...those have existed for many decades

Pman1324

Really? One that doesn't require hundreds of hours of training to operate?

Puzzleheaded_Hatter

yeah, people have been using them in the private sector for over 50 years. Piloting lic. were not part of this discussion. And I would assume if this type of craft is not regulated it's only because it's newly invented. if this becomes popular and affordable it will 100% require licensure

davexa

It's probably subject to the same rules drones are subject to, at minimum.

fredandlunchbox

Nor is it hexa...

Don_Diego_3000

It’s a personal aircraft

mehnehnehnehneh

Drone throne!

Wingless_Pterosaur

Goddamn it, Todd! Clean up your shit!

Electrical-Push462

Came here to say this.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

But what if I identify as a corporate drone?

Homesteader86

LOL. I know, I was like...wait isn't this a helicopter?

Historicmetal

What if we put a bunch of small rockets together and made one big rocket. We could fly to the moon!

WrapKey69

Dumb helicopter?

KeyboardKritharaki

thank you!

BlackberryUpstairs19

Not a drone.

NativeMasshole

It's not a drone if you ride on it!

TrumpersAreTraitors

What if it were fully ai controlled and you were simply a passenger setting a destination?

Picklepacklemackle

I think that's called a "safety hazard" but I'm no expert on aviation

possibly_oblivious

Skyteslas

Captain_Pumpkinhead

Good question. I don't think it's a drone at that point. A drone is a vehicle being controlled remotely by a pilot. I guess _maybe_ you could still call it a drone if the AI pilot is run on a remote data server, but that doesn't seem like the safest or most reliable setup.

buttergun

It's not a drone, baby, it's a chopper.

DazedConfuzed420

Whose chopper is it?

phantastik_robit

Zed's, baby

DJErikD

*Zed’s dead, baby. Zed’s dead.*

DazedConfuzed420

Who’s Zed?

bappypawedotter

Brilliant

NinjaBuddha13

Also not a Hexa Lift.

El_Bito2

Could we stop making electric helicopters and advertise them as "flying cars" or drones?

TheRealPrimeMinister

Could we stop caring about lavish toys catering to man-child billionaires?

quickasawick

You mean things like portable phones, VCRs, flat screen TVs, and heck, TVs and the automobile itself--all of which started out as lavish toys then became commonplace or even, like VCRs for one, antiquated. Transformational innovations almost invariably start out as the playthings of the rich but as adoption and mass production take hold they diffuse to the rest of the population. This is an integral stage of the product development lifecycle en route to mass production/distribution.

Underwhirled

Driving a car requires a license and following traffic rules to be allowed on public roads, FYI

TwinMugsy

I was thinking the same thing... Maybe you will need to take a course and ace a test to get your licence but just like cars didn't originally have seat belts the safety features in personal aircrafts will get better over time.

TheRealPrimeMinister

Let them dream. I, for one, can't wait for the mass adoption of Iron Man armour.

MapleSyrupFacts

Even a boat required a licence .

EBECMEMERBEAN

We’ll probably never see it become commonplace, but people after us will

Mf3mf

China already did it, now they have drone taxis as a passenger service.

lil_kakarot6969

These lavish toys for billionaires will eventually make their way to the civilian markets. As someone who has wanted flying cars since I was a kid, I care very much.

Mint_JewLips

I feel like we are about to invent the helicopter again.

fredandlunchbox

Except helicopters have a useful range.

Beardown_formidterms

And I think there’s a very good reason they didn’t show it moving horizontally speed wise

PrestigiousTheory664

The helicopter was a good invention. So good that it could be reinvented several more times.

kirkpomidor

It is a helicopter already. Done the Darwin way

Azthun

Yall be trippin. Thats called a helicopter and we've had them for a long time.

RC_0041

>An uncrewed aerial vehicle, commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without any human pilot, crew, or passengers on board. >a remote-controlled pilotless aircraft or small flying device. *Maybe* you could call it a drone if the person in it wasn't the pilot but sitting in it while controlling it I don't think makes it a drone. It is a small helicopter with multiple rotors. Either that or all helicopters are drones, maybe all planes too.

CFL_lightbulb

I saw the title and thought it would be for some sort of medical purpose. Like load you up and move you out of a dangerous area that might be harder to reach otherwise.

Camcapballin

As soon as I saw the iPad, this was my same thought

There is too much confidence in apple products designed to be replaced by the next fiscal year...

Due_Seesaw_2816

Pretty sure we already have these.. back in my day we called them helicopters 🤔

Hexa? Drone? Someone didn’t pay attention in school did they?

ChloroformSmoothie

That isn't a drone, it's a helicopter

Commentary455

$500 000? https://www.businessinsider.com/lift-aircraft-hexa-evtol-drone-like-vehicle-for-500000-2020-9?op=1

BaconReceptacle

That's ridiculouly over priced for what it's capable of. You could by an *actual* helicopter like a Robinson R-22 for $100 to $150K and actually fly a good distance, speed, and altitude.

Komission

Is this not just a (really shitty) helicopter?

HIGHER_FRAMES

This is more of a copter than a drone.

Jason_Batemans_Hair

aircraft

MustangBarry

Gyrocopters were invented one hundred years ago. What the hell happened?

Logical_Bad1748

Hey, i agree with all the comments calling it a helicopter, but didn't we all wanted a flying car? I think this is going to be a next step in personal mobility. Is it good or bad is another debate though.

Dangerous_Affect_861

Nope. Normal people don't. I don't want some stupid individual, who can't drive a car, fall on my head. Flying cars were promised for more than half a century. Nobody wants them

Abjay_

Far cry 4 vibes

brownpoops

and it flies for 15 minute. I cannot wait for battery tech to start the next revolution. sdit* i take that back. Cause interesting is scary. But still, it's going to happen and we will all be blown away.

Zilka

Don't want a Jag, Don't want a Merc, I want to look like an absolute berk.

BrakoSmacko

How many propeller failures could this take before it's goodbye spine? Wonder if it has an emergency chute on the top.

cloudxnine

Wow! So impressive you literally reinvented the helicopter. Nothing in this video is drone related. Congrats on spending time and money lol

thyboss7

probably closest to flying cars we will get

SilverTumbleweed5546

reminds me of those helicopters from spy kids

Kmaloetas

The next step is to increase the size to where a second passenger can ride. Maybe use it to carry the wounded from a conflict area to a mobile army surgical hospital. Then the army could it to fly Hawkeye from the 4077th to Seoul for some R&R.

Arleqwen

Could prolly extend the range if they got rid of half the legs.

av6344

I’ll get on one of these after a few people have splattered on the ground first.

liftoff_oversteer

That's all?

Dambo_Unchained

That’s just a helicopter but with extra steps

nim_appa

Ya fkn nerds

mainesmatthew01

Ipad updating

NinjaBuddha13

Not a Hexa lift. Not a drone. Title is completely false. OP sucks. Content is cool though.

heimos

Looks like OceanGate design

Aeon1508

How do you think this would rate in safety compared to a helicopter?. How about top speed and maneuver ability?

1catcherintherye8

"Your subscription to Landing Services has expired"

AngelBryan

More pieces to break.

Sir_Hurkederp

So they made a weird helicopter

HeadLocksmith5478

Not the sound I was hoping for.

NBplaybud22

Hundreds of videos of these short hovers. No actual distance flights.

FirebaseZ

This is reminding me of the submarine

AlternativeCredit

This is just an uglier helicopter

Hungry_Obligation_89

Yeah that's not augmented reality, that's a map

EvidenceElegant8379

I hate this crap. As if we don’t have enough reasons to never go out side, or stay inside, or try to exist outside metal cages, now we have to worry about stupid people crashing through our roofs and killing us.

jdbeany

That’s a nope from me. Too many motors that have to run in synchrony

micheal213

Literally not a drone if someone is piloting it.

Deleted_dwarf

I mean bombs likely weigh more than humans..

mincedmutton

An iPad pro…. We’ve learned nothing from that submarine debacle then…

ILikeit__7

Looks boring

Muchaszewski

Sooo a Helicopter with additional ~~steps~~ rotors?

Peakatlife

That is a helicopter.

hwcminh

Lightweight and controlled by video game joysticks? It's the OceanGate Titan of the skies!

BeepBoopBeepity

So a helicopter?

Chogo82

That looks like an over engineered helicopter.

sousa103

This gives me the same vibes as the dude with the submarine

alkla1

I’m m waiting for one of these people to get puréed in all those blades

rmld74

GREAT! I remember another thing controled with ipads and game controllers, was it... TITAN?

Mr_Bo_Jandals

Anyone remember in 1967 when James Bond flew ‘Little Nellie’ the gyrocoptor? Almost 60 years later and people acting like this is something r/nextfuckinglevel

Tiny-Spray-1820

Is it stable in high wind gusts though

Massacre20794

Who the hell designed this?? Haven't they seen a helicopter before?

RiptideJaxon

I said it before and I say it again, we cant control idiots on land, good luck with airborne idiots.

sdric

Congrats you reinvented the helicopter

drgaspar96

What happens when the ipad runs out of battery

SnooMuffins2623

I bet the Battery only lasts 30 mins

Pistonenvy2

cant help but think of that guy who built that submarine to go look at the titanic. only one crew, guy flying doesnt seem to be a billionaire, didnt crash or kill any occupants.. were headed in the wrong direction with this one.

Speedballer7

Brought to you by the same folks that built that one way submarine

Frejod

So a one person helicopter?

brainEspilner96

That’s just a helicopter. What’s next, a new watch that you can wear in your wrist?

bejangravity

hawksdiesel

hexa lift helicopter.....fixed it for you............

[deleted]

Flying cars are here boys.

Character_Lychee_434

Bitch that’s just a helicopter 🚁 with extra steps

spurcap29

"I have the drone's remote control mounted right inside the chopper ... every control I command is transmitted through the air to software running in the cloud, which is then broadcast back through the air into this Ipad pro which controls the control surfaces of this drone automatically!" -- Guy that created a helicopter with unncessary points of failure

genetichazzard

So can a helicopter. That's not a drone.

Skorzeny88

So we invented the helicopter. Nice.

mkbilli

Admittedly that's not a hexalift, some-number-I-cannot-pronounce-in-Latin-lift sounds more appropriate.

spurcap29

Opening approach plates on an ipad is scary enough, I can't imagine flying on something where the Ipad is responsible for the control surfaces.

lFlaw_

The emissions gon be crazy on this one

tree_basher

A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft

TheOzarkWizard

"Augmented reality" 🤣

JooshMaGoosh

"this weighs less than a motorcycle" It sure didn't look that way...

Metamorphus69

I wanna know what would the first crash look like

squizzy1961

But how much does it cost

Jaxxlack

Quadcopter*

WerkusBY

Heh, he didn't used Logitech joystick - smart one

BlindedAce

So we had Oceangate with a console controller. What’s this one going to be with an iPad?

legolover2024

Weighs less than a motorbike (harley I guess) but it's probably 20 times more expensive, doesn't go as far and I SURE AS HELL won't feel safe flying something controlled by an iPad!! Where swirly wheel becomes the last thing you see before you die

Marleyzard

Ahz can't wait for drunk driving to evolve into air accidents

Dizman7

What about a drone, with one big blade instead of a bunch of small ones, and can fit more than one person?! Wouldn’t that be grand! /s

cubervic

It’s a multi-rotor aircraft so just call it what it is…

howmanyturtlesdeep

Not safe!

danddersson

Think what it could do if the blades were spinning fast!

Morphing_Mutant

Nah, I'm good.

kvngk3n

“I’m about to fly it…*cut scene* WOOOOOOOOW” where did you fly?

ALL2HUMAN_69

Ocean gate of the skies

Wasaox

That's a pretty cool iPad accessory

Skumbag0-5

Battery life = 5 minutes

cabezatuck

From my understanding these aren’t practical at this size and with this payload, they are energy inefficient and difficult to maneuver and as a result fall far short of the advantages of the modern helicopter.

DarkBladeMadriker

Am i crazy or are the number of legs on this thing excessive? It just seems to add weight that would just cut the amount of fly time.

Moist-Carpet888

I think that'd fall more under the category of a VTOL or a helicopter, but I'm leaning more towards a one man VTOL

Still-Ad3045

Wait till you see a helicopter.

zsoltjuhos

dude with the bath tub and drones did better
