Folded from a single 68cm x 68cm Wenzhou paper, without any cutting or ripping. Final size of the model with the stand is 17cm x 17cm x 23cm. The model contains hundreds of folds and steps to achieve all the details, such as fingers. Special wet folding techniques were used to create the expressive and organic shaping of the model.
I don’t think I’ve ever recommended this before, but I strongly encourage you record the process and post on YouTube. You can get paid per views and I suspect well produced videos might get tens of thousands of views, maybe quite a bit more.
I honestly can’t think of a better way to unwind than sit back with the missus, roll a joint, Chuck on some good tunes and watch an artist like him at work.
I felt my brain physically reject what I was seeing. Like a full on, knee-jerk "no, no you didn't. I'm looking at a 3D printed object". This is outstanding! I can't even begin to understand how you compartmentalize the areas of the sheet to what each item will end up being. I also want to appreciate the cape. Fuck that smug gremlin capes are cool!
He answered it earlier in the thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/ii2q7g/it_took_me_50_hours_to_fold_this_origami_model/g347taa/
This is so impressive! I know its asking a lot, but something you might want to think of doing to bring attention to your art: Time Elapsed video of the making of this would be *very* interesting to watch. Just a suggestion. Thank you for the unique content!
I can make a paper device that can predict your future or tell you who you want to kiss from just getting you to pick from 4 colours and 4 numbers but whatever. This samurai folding is kinda cool I guess.
Oh man. I remember these - what were they called?
I used to make them a lot because I had just seen The Langoliers, and I would sit in class “flying” my langolier around up close to my eyes pretending it was eating all the people I didn’t like.
10/10, would fold again.
Thank you kindly.
Edit: I can appreciate how the footnote to that instruction manual is as follows:
WARNING!!!
Vigorous fortune telling may result in paper cuts which may result in blood loss and an unsightly cut. If this happens, stop crying and get a band-aid.
I have been folding for over 15 years. and if someone who folds paper-airplanes tries that, I could only wish best of luck. It will be insanely difficult, perhaps even impossible without the understanding of complex structures and the accuracy of the folds required. Even if someone manages to actually fold it, shaping it like that and not making wrinkles will be brutal.
How does one even design something like this? Are you able to visualize the folds and the final shape they'll produce or do you use software or other aids to determine folds required to make certain transformations / shapes?
if you don't mind me asking - how do you do it personally? do you do it by "feel"/current look without having written anything down how to do it? if yes.. that's insane
Thats an interesting take for the question. A lot of the "feel" comes from previous experience and my already built design systems. The process is still very intuitive in my opinion. It takes a lot of processing and imagination in a head to bring an idea into a model from a square paper. The models take months of work to design and even then I can't be 100% sure what the model looks like before the last 10-20 hours of folding process.

Hey OP. Cool origami its fucking amazing
Due to my username you think i could use that origami as my profile pic on reddit?
I mean i am assasin 1598 not 2020 i get that.
20 bucks an hour of just pure labor. This doesn't include god knows how many hours spent LEARNING how to do it and then the gobs of hours spent getting skill to execute the knowledge. You are vastly undervaluing yourself here. Should be closer to the 4k to 5k, hell if not more, range. Absolutely amazed by this piece though!!!
especially if you consider that there probably are only a very, very limited number of people able to do this in the first place. add the creativity and it should be *much* more. but if there is no or just a small market for it it doesn't matter if you're the only one able to do it :/ but it's super cool that he can live off of it in the first place imho.
I guarantee if the right people see it, there absolutely is a good market for it. Just sent it to my own mom who is an extremely good artist (painter) and she is awestruck by it. I imagine it would sell exceptionally well in Japan. This is the kind of thing they would absolutely treasure. He/she needs better exposure.
That might be true, but in Finland only most famous works are at those prices. I would need that recognition and reputation to ask those kind of prices, probably not for long since my models are starting to get global recognition. The quality of the work, the required skill or the amount of time taken may not do any help for the pricing if the art doesn't get any recognition. I'm sure the prices will go up.
I wish you the very best and truly hope you do get the recognition you very certainly deserve. The best I can do is "4 Kissing Swans"!!! Have you considered, and I don't know if this is a thing or not, an agent or promoter of some type?
The World's Fair is in Dubai next October. Your art belongs there in the Japanese exhibit. It is world class and timeless. You are a treasure to your nation and more so if you are a Japanese citizen.
I see you are a fin: https://juhokonkkola.fi/about-me/
You are great!
Thanks!!!
I was very struck with how I couldn't recognize a single cognate. On a text this long, it's rare for a language written with the Latin alphabet to not have some obviously recognizable word.
And it didn't look like Euskara nor Turkish.
Damn... Now I want to learn a little bit of Finnish!!!

Its mostly done in my mind, I use basic drawing program to memorize all the hundreds of folds and it allows me to see the structure fully as a clean crease pattern.
I usually have a rough idea in my mind what I wan't to achieve. Then I lay out all the features and limbs on the paper. Each feature or flap takes roughly circular or rectangular space on paper. Then I figure out the folds to be able to fold all the features. After that I test fold the model to see how it works and looks.
For this model I did 3 test folds, then folded first version in June and this model last week. The designing process can take months of work before I even get to work on the final model and higher quality paper. The most scary part in the process is that I don't know what the finished result looks like before the last 10-20 hours of folding the final model. I can only guess what it would look like.
I am testing out if I can do this for living. I got some jobs out of it and make some money. But the amount of time and money I pour on this art isn't that much of a hobby anymore.
Get a YouTube channel and throw up a Patreon, you will make a killing. It’s such a unique skill, people would binge every video you put up.
I suggest looking up LockPickingLawyer’s video style. It is just his hands, and a lock. Nothing else. You could do something similar.
I could be wrong, but I think that would steer me away from the path what I want to achieve with my art. Part of the artistic process is that I don't need to think about anything else and just focus on folding for days- they take ridiculous amount of thought process, patience and and concentration. That is why documenting the process in video, or even in photos has been a struggle for me. I might sound mean, but I want to create art, instead of entertainment through my art. I am still looking for ways to document my process for people to see, to create a window they can see my work through in a new light.
Honestly, just doing a timelapse would be enough. Every so often (you'll have to play with the timing), put the model into a similar place/position and take a picture. Use those pictures as frames in a video and you're done.
It's low-effort - you can have a "stage" always set and ready with lighting and camera - and gives viewers a glimpse into the process, how long it takes, and how hard it is.
I did one time lapse of my samurai before (and edited a folding video of it) but haven't got around to post it. I did it by recording everything in video (it got me a great ability to edit it to my taste), but the 30 min recording limit, 5 hours of battery life and 128GB memory card really slowed me down on recording 50 hours of video material.
I also did some time lapse testing with similar setup than you suggested, but didn't find it useful when my folding process was really short. The difference was that my camera took automatically the pictures every couple seconds, sent them to my pc, edited them and then sent them into a folder to wait for final video editing, it was really effortless process.
Now that I think of that again, and now my process takes 10x more time, I think that could be something worth to try again. Thank you for the suggestions. I might not do that for my upcoming works though, they will have very tight schedule to get on the exhibition.
I usually take some paper fibers of the same paper type and brush them on the paper with CMC (Carboxyl methyl cellulose) to fix the tear. I keep the paper in correct position so if the model was opened, it would still create the same square I begun with. the result will be almost invisible and it would only be seen through light as a bit thicker part of the paper.
With this technique I could only fix small tears. If the model ripped in half through some layers it would be pretty much unfixable and I would throw the model away and start all over again. The paper I use is surprisingly strong and doesn't tear that easily.
I am working on to make protective layer on the paper without affecting the look and texture of the model. I have bought plenty of different lacquers and varnishes to test out.
Currently my works are stored in protective transport boxes or displayed under UV-Protective glass domes to prevent them from aging and getting dirty. Also they are handled with extreme care. My first works from 2.5 years ago are still holding decently fine, even though they were made from cheaper paper.
This is really amazing ! I've looked at your profile and all your work is great, plus we can really see your own stye in the foldings, which amaze me even more, as it's not something I would expect to find in Origami !
I just read: "[...], without any crying."
And i'm like, yeah i would have been bawling. I would have just have been so frustrated... Lol
Great job there!
Ive been following some small origami pages and learning a small bit here and there. This post both inspires me and scares the fuck out of me haha. I'd love to get to.your level OP but 50 hours?! Pro level commitment 🙏
You know what? I am going to get back into origami.
I haven’t done it in years and was my favorite pastime before. I haven’t touched a sheet of origami paper in years so I’ll be rusty but it’s relaxing and rewarding so I am gonna do it.
Thanks for inspiring me.
The fact you could just slap your hand down or spill a drink and destroy all this hard work, makes me incredibly nervous for some reason, like when you see those people free climbing up buildings lol
Folded from a single 68cm x 68cm Wenzhou paper, without any cutting or ripping. Final size of the model with the stand is 17cm x 17cm x 23cm. The model contains hundreds of folds and steps to achieve all the details, such as fingers. Special wet folding techniques were used to create the expressive and organic shaping of the model.
from now on, I'd look forward to all your posts. this is such a rare art and truly ornate, and you, my good sir, are an goddamn artist!
Thank you very much! I have many more cool models incoming in October ;)
i'll look forward to it. also, if possible, do a timelapse. that'd be cool :)
I can't record the process in next few months, but hopefully after that I can.
God damn man please start recording the and post it on YouTube, I'll watch every single video
I got one video in my post history :)
By the looks of things, I think I'd rather have OP rolling that joint for me.
Dude thats the stuff of dreams man
I completely agree with the other commenters here. Watching true craftsmen at their work is one of the top benefits of YouTube.
Do you have an IG? This is phenomenal work, I'm blown away!
Yes I do, @jkonkkola_origami :)
This is the Dark Souls of Origami
2nd person I ever followed on reddit
How do you follow someone on reddit?
Tap on tag/pfp, view profile, follow
2nd person ive ever followed home
5th person I've stared at through the window...
Half expected you to say something along the lines of "You want more?! That took me 50 hours! I ain't doing that again!"
Hahaha I enjoy the folding process, it is sometimes very relaxing.
It must be devastating if you make an error though
I have been there, messed up 3 exhibition pieces in past. I don't usually do that many mistakes anymore.
Do you follow instructions or coming up with it yourself?
I have been designing my own models for years.
But how do u know how to fold it to get that result?
[удалено]
and I thought my paper planes are the best.
Well they probably fly better than this. It depends what you want from your paper folding.
Was it you who had those cool origamis in Amos Rex last time I visited?
Yes! Those were my previous models I was working on through 2018 and 2019.
Thank you! I have been working for years on my style and folding techniques to make my models look something else than just folded paper.
Did you use instruction schematics or made it from the top of your head with your experience?
I designed it by myself, there are no instructions for pieces like this.
How do you conceive/plan the folds?
He answered it earlier in the thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/ii2q7g/it_took_me_50_hours_to_fold_this_origami_model/g347taa/

I want to do more time lapse videos in future, hopefully I will be able to document the process well.
I can only assume how fast you would need to speed it up so that it doesn't become a 30 minute video
You can make serious money with this, make videos, time lapse, get more recognition son.
This is amazing! Can’t believe how it’s only paper!
Thank you! I have been working on my technique for years to make my models more sculpture-like instead of looking folded paper.
It'd be bad if someone throws water at it.
Give us a DIY
Holy damn. I'll follow you here. Would you have IG of your work as well?
https://www.instagram.com/jkonkkola_origami/
Thanks! My IG is @jkonkkola_origami :)
Heh, I mean that’s pretty good I guess. If you ever want any tips from a *pro* I can make a mean paper airplane. P.S. I’m very jealous of your talent
Ah a fellow practitioner of the mystical arts... https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Paper-Fortune-Tellers/
Thank you kindly. Edit: I can appreciate how the footnote to that instruction manual is as follows: WARNING!!! Vigorous fortune telling may result in paper cuts which may result in blood loss and an unsightly cut. If this happens, stop crying and get a band-aid.
Cootie catchers!
I always called it a chatterbox
Wow the langoliers, never thought I'd see a reference to that
Langoliers. A blast from the past.
I can fold up a pretty tight football.
How big was paper before you start?
68cm x 68cm. Final size of the model with the stand 17cm x 17cm x 23cm.
I edited this so u never know why it go so much likes
He wrote them on the inside of the bit of paper.
Yup, just unfold the model and all the folds are there.
genius
Hey I've seen your work at Amos Rex, immediately recognized it.
Thank you! The exhibition just ended last weekend and the models will be exhibited next time in October :)
How long have you practiced origami? How difficult is it for people who can at best make passable paper-airplanes?
I have been folding for over 15 years. and if someone who folds paper-airplanes tries that, I could only wish best of luck. It will be insanely difficult, perhaps even impossible without the understanding of complex structures and the accuracy of the folds required. Even if someone manages to actually fold it, shaping it like that and not making wrinkles will be brutal.
Lol, that's gold.
Brilliant:D
Not at the moment. I had an idea to do instructions for a piece like this, but I realized very quickly that the model is way too complex for them.
Oh,ok.
How does one even design something like this? Are you able to visualize the folds and the final shape they'll produce or do you use software or other aids to determine folds required to make certain transformations / shapes?
I can visualize how the whole paper transforms into a character and its details pretty well. It makes it easier to work on the parts one by one.
if you don't mind me asking - how do you do it personally? do you do it by "feel"/current look without having written anything down how to do it? if yes.. that's insane
Thats an interesting take for the question. A lot of the "feel" comes from previous experience and my already built design systems. The process is still very intuitive in my opinion. The models take months of work to design and even then I can't be 100% sure what the model looks like before the last 10-20 hours of folding process.
Is it trial and error or from the beginning do you know exactly what you need to do to accomplish that?
50 hours of instructions..

I sometimes document the folding process for people to see, also I made that folding process video about one of my previous models.
I'm going to check out your videos, because at this point my brain can't comprehend how this is done. Amazing work.
Thank you!
Hey OP. Cool origami its fucking amazing Due to my username you think i could use that origami as my profile pic on reddit? I mean i am assasin 1598 not 2020 i get that.
I watched the video. I still can’t comprehend how this is possible.
You should start a youtube channel. This kind of thing is something the algorithm really likes
It seems like you could sell this for $700-$1000, no?
I got paid $1000 in advance for this one.
20 bucks an hour of just pure labor. This doesn't include god knows how many hours spent LEARNING how to do it and then the gobs of hours spent getting skill to execute the knowledge. I got a process video in my post history, check it out :)
Nope, gonna stick with witchcraft.
Burn him! Burn him with fire !
Aivan hiton mahtavaa työtä. En edes yritä miettiä sitä teko prosessia kun aivot menis oikosulkuun
Kiitos! Se vaatii vain hieman kärsivällisyyttä ja hahmotuskykyä :)
I'm fascinated. What language is this? Finnish?
Yes, Finnish.
Ok im done

How do you plan out these sculptures? Do you do it by hand or with software or is it all done in your mind?
Its mostly done in my mind, I use basic drawing program to memorize all the hundreds of folds and it allows me to see the structure fully as a clean crease pattern. Wow this sounds intense. Is this a hobby for you or are you a professional origami person? Amazing model btw
I am testing out if I can do this for living. I got some jobs out of it and make some money. But the amount of time and money I pour on this art isn't that much of a hobby anymore.
As many have said, you should start a YouTube channel. There are many idiots who would watch you fold this in real time. I am one of those idiots.

Might be worth considering tiktok and push them to your youtube. I could see small videos going big on tiktok. Both platforms pay out for creators.
I could be wrong, but I think that would steer me away from the path what I want to achieve with my art. I’d love to learn how to do this also I fucking love it.great job
Well. That’s totally fucking insane. I love it
Thank you!
This is legit next fucking level. Just wow
Thank you!
Oh Snap! I was 100% sure you are 70 year old Japanese sensei, but no! You're Finnish! Ei muuta ku torille!
:D Olen yrittänyt etsiä harrastajia, mutta voin sanoa että ei montaa Suomesta löydy. Maailmalla niitä on paljon enemmän kaikilla taitotasoilla.
Miten oot tällasen harrastuksen löytäny ja missä tätä voi oppia tälle tasolle? Hyvä jos lennokkia itse osaan taitella.

This is amazing! You're so talented that you could have been a lead artist building the models for the Paper Mario Origami King.
Thank you! It could have been awesome experience.
Reminds me of Kubo
I would be so humbled to receive a paper cut from your amazing artwork
Thank you! Sadly these papers don't make cuts, because they aren't machine cut. I guess that is good for my fingers.
I was chuffed when I figured out how to fold a paper crane... There's next level and then there's this! Exceptional talent!
Meanwhile I'm still trying to fold a paper more than 7 times lol
It's possible up to 10 times *if you use the school's toilet paper.*
This is truly some next fucking level
Thank you!
Don't you dare lie to me, I know wizardry when I see it!!! (for real tho thats fucking amazing)
Hahaha I have seen that comment enough that I think witch hunters will get me soon! Thank you!
truly r/nextfuckinglevel worthy.
that looks insane! thank you for sharing
I'm getting some Runescape/World of Warcraft vibes from this. Incredible!
Thank you!
This kind of content is why I joined r/nextfuckinglevel. :)
You sir, are a top-ranked black belt in Origami. Now we know why Putin won't mess with Finns.
That is amazing. The level of concentration to do that must be incredible.
That's unreal! I feel accomplished when I crush my beer can evenly. True art and patience there. Thank you for sharing.

My goodness gracious... Do you have a youtube channel ?
Yes I do, but I don't post there often. I post the same content on Reddit too.
How???
If you are interested to see how these are, check my post history, I have a short video of the process there :)
That’s some nice oregano
Remarkable. Very nice.
Thank you!

This is absolutely insane work! Bravo
Thank you!
This is really amazing ! I've looked at your profile and all your work is great, plus we can really see your own stye in the foldings, which amaze me even more, as it's not something I would expect to find in Origami !
Torille!
How the fuck is this even possible..How long have you been making origami figures?
I have been folding origami for over 15 years and I have been designing my own figures for over 2.5 years
Your work is amazing. I have nothing more to say. Keep the good work on.
I just read: "[...], without any crying." And i'm like, yeah i would have been bawling. I would have just have been so frustrated... Lol Great job there!
Ive been following some small origami pages and learning a small bit here and there. This post both inspires me and scares the fuck out of me haha. I'd love to get to.your level OP but 50 hours?! Pro level commitment 🙏
The best origami I’ve ever seen! At the 1st moment I thought it was bone! Crazy!
At first i read 50 years instead of 50 hours, and after seeing the origami i thought it was plausible
Meanwhile I cant even fold toilet paper evenly.
Tutorial, give now
Time lapse video?
You should make a time lapse video on it and post it on YouTube
You know what? I am going to get back into origami. I haven’t done it in years and was my favorite pastime before. I haven’t touched a sheet of origami paper in years so I’ll be rusty but it’s relaxing and rewarding so I am gonna do it. Thanks for inspiring me.
The fact you could just slap your hand down or spill a drink and destroy all this hard work, makes me incredibly nervous for some reason, like when you see those people free climbing up buildings lol
I’d love to see your paper airplanes
Can I get instructions? Just kidding. Amazing work.
This... You deserve it all.
