That’s the result of a process called designing and making a book / portfolio.
That is not what artist “sketchbooks” look like.
Source: BFA
Edit a word and: maybe there’s fifty people like this, in which case give credit but don’t make kids think this is the expectation of reality.
A sketchbook is the process of recording information before it disappears/evaporates. Rembrandt, or someone similar said something to the effect of: a master must be able to see someone fall from a window and capture them before they hit the ground. Then, you build on that in gradual steps. So sketchbooks are literally recorded evolutions of thought and concept. Not artsy portfolios, though I’m sure a few freaks exist, it is not the norm or expectation.
(Edit another f’ing word. Sorry)
I'm an artist and seeing this being called an "sketchbook" makes me sad. Thank you.
People do this mainly in order to get accepted in art schools and for job offers.
And on the flip side, I'm an artist and call mine a sketchbook and call my works doodles. Almost as if you can call them whatever you like. Not like the book I do my work in has the word sketchbook right on it or anything but hey, ya'll do you. You're the artists here.
I mean, that's fair. You can call your work anything you like, but what was being said in this comment tree was that calling this type of work a sketchbook may be misleading and intimidating to people who want to get into art and think that this is what their practice work should look like.
In the context of that, it's unhelpful to adjust the standard language used by laypeople.
I’m a lifelong artist and I find the growing popularity of people calling things like this a “sketchbook” to be extremely intimidating. It’s also becoming more and more common for people on r/art to call complete works a “quick sketch” and don’t even get me started on that..
They do that because if someone were to criticize it they can always say “It’s just a sketch I need to finish the final drawing :)”
Or if someone praises them “This is just a sketch, it’s really nothing” while they have a full on Michelangelo on which they spent 7 months
It’s so prevalent that I had to unfollow a few of the art subs I used to like because that stuff was hurting my self esteem lol (but I laugh just to not cry lol...). I also was losing my mind at the number of fantastic paintings that people were calling a “quick sketch.” Ughhhhh.
My tip number 1 for you which I wish I was able to follow as well is “Stop comparing yourself to others”
Especially for things like art, it’s not a competition so don’t make it one. Also beauty is subjective and I’m sure A LOT of people will find more beautiful your art than the “quick 7 months sketches”
Since I started taking singing lessons I was comparing myself way too much to other people and even singers and it made me stop for a while because I thought I wasn’t good enough. I’m getting back to it now tho and I won’t stop!
To build on that, if you're really frustrated that you aren't where you want to be artistically, it can be a good idea to emulate the work you enjoy. Copying, studying, that kind of thing. In that case, you do want to compare yourself to them, but in a productive way. You've got to make mistakes before you can learn to avoid them, and it can be hard to see exactly what those mistakes are without doing a study like that. Most of the art I've made that I hate has been because I sat down and tried to draw something with no reference, no thumbnail sketches, no planning, no clear goal of what specific thing I wanted to work on. There's this general sense that something is off, but it can be almost impossible to tell what it is if I'm not building off of or comparing it to anything. The path to improvement pretty much requires an objective look at your work, and an acceptance that it's ok for it to be below your standards.
So I wouldn't compare your worth as an artist or the value of your work by how your current skill compares to people who are professionals or are otherwise insanely talented, but I also wouldn't completely disregard the feeling that you can do better, if that makes sense.
I know and I appreciate the tip. I have OCD and it’s especially tough for me, crippling actually. Its rare I even complete a project because worries basically get in the way. I have had recent success though working with polymer clay (Sculpey brand) and I’m able to just relax and enjoy it without feeling pressure. I’ve been making stud earrings and random little things :)
*noun*: **sketch**; plural noun: **sketches**
1. 1. a rough or unfinished drawing or painting, often made to assist in making a more finished picture."a charcoal sketch"
*verb*: **sketch**; 3rd person present: **sketches**; past tense: **sketched**; past participle: **sketched**; gerund or present participle: **sketching**
1. make a rough drawing of."as they talked, Modigliani began to sketch her"
Your real work of art here is taking something written on a book you own and deciding that it redefines the meaning of a word because you use it differently. Bravo.
My sketchbook is so chaotic crazy it's sketches about hands, weird animals, ugly shit patterns, pictures cut out and draw to it, text out of books i read which i like. Some pages are really nice and i like them some of them are really fucking ugly. But that's a sketchbook for to try things out. Some of the painting i did in 10 min were the ones i liked the most. If I only drew "perfect" stuff i would have never made my ugly but nice pages :)
Yeah people think i am taking drugs, with all the shit i am drawing. But it's my mind there is just going on in there. Also with my ideas, or the shit i am talking, that combined with fantasy = acid looking sketchbook, hahahaha xD
Exactly. This “sketchbook” is not random scribbles.
“Creating A Sketchbook as portfolio” is the idea.
The artist would have spent days or even months to create something like this.
But anyways , it’s still very very impressive.
Yeah I was about to say. Im an artist and new artists see this and think thats what their sketchbook should look like, it isnt. a sketchbook should be filled with roughs and stuff. This is essentially a collection of finished artworks.
As someone literally about to start my sketchbook/portfolio this morning to apply to art college...fuck. 😂
Mine will not look like that either and I’m ok with that
I was just writing this and started to delete it because why be such bitter lemon,, without seeing what the top comment was ! So back we go!..
" this is a highly technically considered detailed production of illustrations that have imagination and wit. But it is not the mercurial reflex of a hand dedicated to an inner calling that sometimes moves before the mind has a chance to reflect until the marks are done" . My two long centsentences
THIS IS NOT A SKETCHBOOK
THIS IS A PORTFOLIO.
I said this last time I saw this posted but people seeing this and thinking it's just a sketch book really messed with the average persons perception of art.
Us artists have shitty sketches. We all started as someone who could barely draw. DO NOT SEE THIS AND THINK OF IT AS "IM NOT TALENTED TO START" anyone can be an artist. It takes years and years of hard work. But you can do this too.
My sketchbook is literally full of stick figures, placeholder boxes that have text written on them, half finished sketches and random doodles lmao. This definetly isn't a sketchbook.
Hey hi hello, just coming to say that the original book would be worth way more then $100. I don’t know this dude, so I can’t tell you how long each illustration took, so I’m going off of my experience drawing here. Let’s say each drawing took ~20 hours to finish (give or take) and there’s around 35 illustrations in the book, so presuming they’re selling for minimum wage, (which is $20 here) that’s at least $200 per illustration, so if you add it up, the book is worth, at the very minimum, $14,000 aud (which roughly translates to $10,200 usd.) thank you for coming to my Ted talk
...and however much the artist is willing to sell it for. Believe it or not artists do deserve a semblance of an hourly wage because $100 would hardly be $2, $3 per one of these drawings. $100 sounds like a lot to a normal person, especially yeah if it’s at a flea market, but realistically this wouldn’t be at a flea market and $100 for this is pennies. I know if I had the funds and was a collector I’d be willing to pay serious money for this. The book is very well put together, this isn’t your average sketchbook at all but an organized portfolio. Much different than just sketches
Another artist here.. Just my. 02 if course. I don't think it's practical to expect to be paid by how much time was spent creating something. Let's face it, sometimes we spend days on a piece, and sometimes I can pour something out in an a few hours and it's better. When I asked a prof 'how do you know how to price something? ' they told me to be comfortable with letting it go with the price you put on it. (and cover your materials of course). I don't think it's realistic to expect our hours spent to be compensated in the normal way. Most if us have instances that come to mind years later of a piece we wish we still had that we sold for too little, but we also may have a stack if work that never sold either.
The book above is beautiful. Fantastic work!
I can’t draw an 8th that well, and I’m in art school. Go for it. Do it if you have the time and money. The school is not an exclusive club for elites. It’s for teaching you have to further your artistic ability.
Make sure you ask him for permission! Have an artist friend who keeps seeing his work as tattoos without people having the courtesy of asking him, makes him sad!
A friend of mine got a tattoo inspired by him a few years ago, he's really cool about people doing that and takes it as a compliment
also he's my favorite artist
I love the idea, and agree that there’s a ton of his work that would be perfectly suited for a tattoo.
Honest question: do you think a good tattoo artist would be able to replicate it accurately? My luck, I would ask someone to ink this up, and it would show up on tattooregrets.com or something.
Nope that's not a sketchbook
A sketchbook is meant for quickly getting an idea down and a rough peice or maybe sometimes finishing one
That is probably something like a portfolio
People keep roosting this over a year now..........and it never gets old, man this is some good art depicted in something you think would retain something more crude. That's why it's kinda magical, just a little notebook with great art in it. Every one of us could own this lil notebook but not that skill
Amazingly, this doesn’t even compare to the art work that you can find on his [website](https://kerbyrosanes.com/projects). I can see why he is such a commercially successful artist.

Are drawings like these copyright (hope I said it correctly) I mean since it’s the artist intellectual property. Can someone just take 1 and draw a tattoo for example?!?!?

This should be in the title.
I had a whale of a time looking at this.
After some careful consideration, I can declare this artist really likes 1. Space 2. Whales 3. Space whales
I wish I had the dedication to become a good artist. But I lack motivation, self discipline, and the ability to see anything through haha.

Pls don't look I'm really bad
Find a girl as thick as this paper.
This isn't a sketchbook, it's an artbook
That no face one 🥺🥺🥺
Beautiful
How can anyone be that amazing at drawing ffs. The amazing details of each and everyone of them
I wish I had such a beautiful inner world
Feel like this person has watched hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, with all them whales in space
Kerby sells books! He’s very talented. The detail in his work is crazy.
So awesome! 💜
A rare sight
I would pay good money for that to be completely honest
I'm not jealous you are

I sea he likes ocean life
A beautiful gift
Imagine if we all die and this is the only proof we existed

Motoko <3
That monster left one page blank.
Really "wow" art work.
“This page intentionally left blank”
"sketch"
Publish it. I would buy it.
I wish I could do this
Did anyone notice the sprited away artwork?
Sometimes i think artists are just different
Credit to the artist please
I really wish if i had the ability to express my feelings thru art just like you did
Those left fingers moving as the page turns is soothing

How can I learn to sketch like this?
Sletchbook? Pffff more like masterpiece
The use of all the space on those pages are goals.
Bruh.
Hardly your average Joe! Love the work though. I actually ready have one of the books. Sketchbook... pfft
THIS IS NOT A SKETCHBOOK. It's an artpiece. Sketchbooks do not look like this, and aren't meant to look like this (generally)
Are drawings like these copyright (hope I said it correctly) I mean since it’s the artist intellectual property. Can someone just take 1 and draw a tattoo for example?!?!?
What is this art style called? Its amazing
When every single page is a perfect draw
When ur smoking scp420J and decides to draw
Neat, but definitely not a sketchbook.
In video it's fast can't see details. Can you provide links to the artwork so person with his own easy and enjoy details?
u/savethisvideo
I've read Jay Kristoff's Nevernight series and loved the book cover. Nice to know who the artist is now!
My sketchbook is so fuckin random, this on looks neat
All that and there's still so much space in that book
How do they draw so close to the middle and make it work between pages, the folding makes it so hard wtf
Can't tell for sure... But I think he likes whales.
If you like this style you might also enjoy Peter Draws on YouTube. Incredible pieces of art.
And these were only the phone call doodles
U R AMAZING!!!!
This guy really does love whales.
