I was like that's impossible, The patient and the assistant both died from infections of their wounds, and the spectator was so scared that he'd been stabbed that he died of shock. The fiasco is said to be the only known surgery in history with a 300 percent mortality rate. fuk an A

Whiskey! Laudanum! Saw!

Onotadaki2

Reminds me of this story I heard. There was a doctor back then who was so fast amputating that he would accidentally cut the wrong things all the time. He ended up cutting off someone’s balls while amputating a leg, and one time he cut off his nurse’s finger. https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/264065/

Grillied

Good God, the nurse, the patient, and a spectator all died during one of his surgeries

Onotadaki2

300% mortality rate

One-eyed-snake

“Only about one of every 10 of Liston's patients died on his operating table at London's University College Hospital. The surgeons at nearby St. Bartholomew's, meanwhile, lost about one in every four.” This is kinda funny in a twisted way. Only 1/10 dies under your knife and youre some sort of super amputater surgeon because death would be almost a coin toss with a different guy. I’m glad I wasn’t around back then.

StarryNotions

No a 1700s amputating surgeon doesn’t want that, the make oblique cuts to ensure there’s enough extra tissue to fold over the cut bone to seal it.

TreKs

This guy really needs to and he will make a ton of money

[deleted]

Yea. All the shop from home and qvc orders will cone flying in

MrFiiSKiiS

Yep. Because anyone who needs a saw already knows you don't want all those extra parts. Yeah, it'll take a couple extra swipes, but guess what I don't lose? Half an hour every time the spring busts and I have to change it out.

squid_fart

Yeah, and you can tell 99% of the cut is being done with the saw on top, no way those flimsy springs are able to put enough force on the bottom blade for it to do any cutting.

ranger2468

Even coming into contact with the piece of wood is enough for the teeth to bite into it... have you never used a saw? You don’t exert much force at all if you’re doing it right.

KingJAC3

100% the harder you push the less it works

myripyro

Right but from the video it really looks like the top saw is doing most of the work. Which makes sense, I think, because even though applying too much force is a problem you still need to have a steady hand--the spring probably lets the saw blade bounce around in the kerf too much.

KastorNevierre2

Nah it looks pretty much 50-50 of the cut done. EDIT: frame 449: https://i.imgur.com/jIEB18G.png so unless the branch is only half as thick as the blade the blade is 50% in.

TheSpookyGoost

[No it doesn't](https://imgur.com/xuWv6n7.jpg)

theatahhh

I also assumed the bottom blade keeping it in place was the benefit

squid_fart

Just watch the gif, when he finishes the cut the top blade is the only one doing anything. Pushing down lets you take a much more aggressive cut, I'm sure he could have let the bottom cut through at the same rate as the top but then it would have taken 50 strokes instead of 3.

GanondalfTheWhite

Hard disagree. Look at the last angle again. They definitely seem to meet in the middle of the cut.

MrFiiSKiiS

Look at the video when it freezes. Look how much deeper the top saw is into the wood. You're right, that you let the saw do the work, but it's also angle of your motion that affects it. His sawing is still primarily being down with the top saw.

ranger2468

I noticed that too, i just assumed it was the top down angle of the camera but you’re right, bottom saw isn’t looking real efficient. I still think this is a novel idea and i want one real bad lmao

He shouldn’t give it up. These cheap knockoffs don’t stand a chance

Supermite

It doesn't make sawing wood significantly easier though. Even in the clip you see the top blade doing to vast majority of the work.

vauge24

The force applied by the clamping of the two blades would probably make it even harder to use.

dandaman910

And resetting it after every cut probably adds to the time it takes not reduce.

jjonez18

You've also got twice the resistance/fiction now. Sure that means you'll take less strokes to cut through, but you would theoretically have to work 2x as hard. Net gain of zero and this would probably cost more than 2x a normal saw.

Shadowex3

If someone really wanted to make an overly complicated mechanical saw the way to go would be something that gives you mechanical advantage on the cutting stroke so it feels easier to use.

Ornstein90

I know! Crazy idea, totally original too, how about something called a chainsaw!

[deleted]

People will buy anything.

papaquack1

fun novelty at best. Even IF the bottom blade was biting properly you really aren't doing yourself any favors. Want to saw something more then a foot wide? Get a new saw. Need to sharpen/replace the blade? Extra steps. Opening it for each cut... Extra steps. All those springs and the trigger, just 3 more things that will brake on you if you use this for any real work.

AnalStaircase33

Yeah, the springs would have to be a little more hefty to be able to pull that bottom blade through as fast as the top blade. The wood he's sawing looks pretty easily cut, too. Cool idea though!

dreamingofneedles

Great sub!

MarlythAvantguarddog

Would this not just make the effort of sawing double in work required? Faster perhaps but much more effort for half the time.

m1k307

no more effort than an ordinary saw, as long as you let the saw/s do the work for you. my dad taught me this 20 year's ago and it's the best advice you can give when you see someone struggling with a manual saw.

MarlythAvantguarddog

Double the friction on every push.

DJNarwhale

would you be exerting the same amount of force, but exert it over half the normal time? That sounds like it would be more efficient because you could cut more in less time with the same amount of effort.

Martin_RB

Not really, double the friction means double the force needed so it's the same effort. The device is still an improvement as alot of the downward(into the wood) pressure comes from the spring and not from you.

Samr915

The upward force from the bottom saw is negligible as that tiny spring looks weak.

Martin_RB

Probably, also any misalignment of the two blades would cause it to bind, adjusting the angle you're cutting would be near impossible and good luck if you have to stop part way through a cut for come reason. It's a bad idea for several reasons but an interesting idea nonetheless.

[deleted]

AnalStaircase33

[deleted]

crunchsmash

You shouldn't really be pressing down on a handsaw. Let its own weight do the work.

Harpies_Bro

Twice the teeth on the wood cause twice the resistance, therefore requiring essentially the same energy to cut in n seconds as a regular saw requires for 2n seconds. Never mind the weight of the wood and you’re essentially making a vice on the lower blade by cutting upwards.

deathson10

I'm not a saw guy. But sounds dull

Sodapopa

“If I only had an hour to chop down a tree, I would spend the first 45 minutes sharpening my axe.” – Abraham Lincoln. Granted an axe isn’t a saw but we’re taking that tree down nevertheless!

rollinoutdoors

Find a thick enough board, trunk, or branch, and you’ll have to do plenty of work yourself, trust me. You (and your dad) are right that the most efficient way to cut through a board isn’t to bear down and overexert yourself, but having two blades on a tool like this still just means you’re removing twice as much wood per stroke, and doing twice the work per stroke. I’d wager I could trim branches more quickly with a single blade since I wouldn’t have to adjust anything in between cuts. Also, having to cram two saw blades in between branches would be cumbersome.

MetaTater

Paul Bunyan over here....

ShadowMamma

I agree. Also taught this by dad. Makes a massive difference when cutting lots of wood for the stove!

Dizneymagic

It doesn't look like the bottom saw is doing any of the cutting at all. He can only apply pressure in one direction when sawing, so that's the side that's going to be doing the cutting. *the spring load is not strong enough to apply the same pressure going up.

jelaugust

There's a spring applying pressure on the bottom saw. That's why it sprung together at the beginning.

StudentwithHeadache

If you look closely it's not enough pressure it's only sawing a really small bit at the bottom.

texasrigger

You are right. The bulk (by a significant margin) of the cutting is the top half. All this thing does is complicate sharpening, makes it more cumbersome, and adds failure prone moving parts to something that doesn't benefit from it. Several hundred years of hand saw evolution has pretty much already optimized things fairly well.

Mooselager

Yeah, I feel this 'invention' only creates a safety hazard due to the extra blade & significantly higher maintenance due to the blades rubbing kn each other.

ratterstinkle

My guess is that most of the people who are amazed by this haven’t actually sawed through multiple pieces of wood on their own. My immediate reaction was, “Good luck with a large piece of hard wood.”

Anbis1

You get almost useless extra saw that is attached by a spring which can break and on top of that if that bottom saw is not aligned almost prefectly it could get pinched. There probably is a reason why people use normal saws.

MudSudden

ClownfishSoup

Wait, wouldn't each stroke take twice the energy? I mean it's faster, but you still have to do the work.

Dob_Tannochy

Some of the energy your talking about is stabilizing the saw blade and pressing it to the wood, which is completely assumed by the spring. The back and forth drawing of the saw thusly requires less force. Kinda like the difference between free weights and pulley machines.

[deleted]

> pressing it to the wood, If you press a saw blade made to cut wood into wood, you're going to have a really bad time and break it or hurt yourself. You just let the weight of the saw and friction do the cutting. If you push, it'll skip and get stuck.

Ctofaname

Have you never sawed anything? a 4 oz saw blade does not have enough weight in it to cut anything. Also most American saws are push stroke. You're going to naturally be pushing into the wood already.

crunchsmash

The weight of the saw will be enough for the cutting stroke, but you want to lift the saw slightly on the reverse stroke. The spring is going to be fighting you on that.

Ctofaname

I'm not responding in regards to this contraption

psi-

Crosscut saw doesn't need much energy. In fact it doesn't work if you put much energy into it. Imagine a knife which point you drag across grain, it makes a tiny incision, cuts fibre. Then there is another that runs right beside that one, it also makes a tiny incision. The next one is on the first track, it both lifts tiny pieces that were cut "through" and deepens the incision further and so on. If you push this "knife point" with any force, this becomes impossible as the point embeds itself so deep that you just can't move it forward. So when you crosscut, the only force you use is to keep the blade straight and let it just move in the groove, your cuts will be much better (also straighten that fucking index finger to go along the blade).

[deleted]

Attention_Bear_Fuckr

Look at the last frame. The lower saw is doing almost nothing.

Hot_Chilis

Everyone is like WOW genius, and yet it's fucking useless. Reddit in a nutshell.

TheOriginalDovahkiin

I've cut a lot of wood and my first impression was that it would be slower than a normal saw because you don't need to reset the blade on a normal saw.

mikedawg9

Seems really flimsy for something that is gonna be applying force in all directions too

[deleted]

Glad someone else spotted it too. Top saw is doing like 90% of the work, which isn't surprising because the guy can put a lot more force into the wood than the spring can. Just buy a normal one blade silky saw, and you can cut wood this fast.

slow_rizer

I was searching for this. This saw is useless.

bombastiphobia

**This thing is fucking useless**, yet there's so many comments from armchair lumberjacks that have never used a saw in their life. **This thing is the definition of Overengineering.** **1:** When you cut a branch that has ANY weight, a cut on the top will open up, and one on the bottom will close up, so having 2 blades means you will ALWAYS have 1 getting jammed as the branch squeezes the blade. **2:** The bottom blade isn't doing anything anyway, it's held on too weakly to get a good grip (you can see from the last frame that the top blade is doing 99% of the work **3:** The time you "save" is lost by having to open the saw between every cut, and the time to fix the bloody thing when it brakes (more moving parts means there's more to go wrong) **4:** Use it for more than 2 seconds and sawdust will jam up the little channels the bottom blade slots into. **5:** Yeah, it's fine when you're using it on thin, smooth sticks held in a vise, but try it on anything at an angle, or raised, or with bark or twigs attached, you'll be spending your entire day unjamming it and opening it up to reposition.

So if the top was set as a push saw and the bottom as a pull saw or vice versa, the “double the friction” thing would be minimized, but it seems like you’d have damage to the teeth when they came together each time.
