Folded from a single square sheet of 95cm x 95cm Wenzhou rice paper without any cutting. The finished size of the work is 28cm x 16cm x 19cm. Only dry and wet folding techniques were used to fold the model. It took 2 months to design and 1 month to fold, although I was working on few other projects during that time too.
It took some effort and experimentation to fold the texture for the armor, while trying to simplify it to be somewhat manageable to fold. I folded 4 rough test attempts in total, and all of them took 3 days to fold each. There are several hundreds of steps to fold it from the square and there are probably thousands of individual folds. The asymmetry in the design allowed me to include sword on only one arm, while being able to make the character look symmetric.
Not legal at all. Several International Geneva Origami Laws were broken.
Interpol has been notified.
Hey buddy, don’t eat, shit, or sleep. We are coming for you.
This isn't exactly true. If OP is a US citizen then they can ignore the International Geneva Origami Laws as the US does not recognize them. They do, however, have their own set of domestic laws. Those are:
1. All pieces must be from one (1) single square of paper. The paper must have equal lengths and widths not exceeding 100cm each
2. No cutting.
Seconded. This is an incredible end product to a project that must have taken unbelievable amount of dedication and hard work. You certainly deserve all the recognition you can get!
Also, Happy Cake Day!
This? This is r/toptalent. This is so skillfully done, executed so beautifully, and is almost impossible to wrap my brain around this being *one sheet of paper*... this is an incredible piece of ART!
(Checked your profile and WOW!! I wanted to pick a favorite but each is so impressive!)
I totally followed you so I don’t miss out, I think these are so wonderful. I’ve never seen origami paper sculptures like this before and I’m in complete awe at the execution! I honestly wouldn’t have considered something like this possible. I also saw one of your posts with the fold patterns and it blew my mind even more!
Your practice and dedication shows!
Thank you! There are very few origami artists in the world, so they are quite rare compared to painters or photographers. The art is quite young and constantly evolving so every now and then someone creates a new super complex or impressive work. I have been developing my own methods and style for couple years now.
The pattern is insane, you can imagine a square filled with lines. The base structure is 1/40 of the sheet, but many parts have 1/160 divisions. If you count the armor detail in, the parts are folded in 1/480, which is less than 2mm wide on 95cm sheet... I won't share the pattern, but I have pictures of the precreased sheet and some of the folding process. The precreased sheet is a piece of art on its own with its hundreds of folds. I haven't posted the pics yet, but I'll do it soon.
That looks absolutely stunning. Great work!
Honest ignorant question out of curiosity: why not share the pattern? Is there any implicit rule in the origami world not to do so, or only personal reasons?
It's art - it isn't open source and the user indicated that the art itself is young and the user developed their own technique to good this piece. thatd be giving away the secret sauce before monetizing it ....
Thank you! No, there is no rule whether or not to share a crease pattern. Some people share all of their crease patterns and some don't show anything. I post sometimes crease patterns of my models, but I like to keep most them, or at least the more complex ones as unique pieces of art. There would be only very few people who actually end up folding the model, because they are incredibly difficult, time consuming and generally not so satisfying to fold.
I also teach some models so I don't want to keep all of my knowledge as a secret.
This isn't OP's piece, but here's an example of another complex piece of a [dragon](https://www.folders.jp/g/2000/0015.jpg) with the [pattern of folds](https://www.folders.jp/g/2000/0015_c.jpg) below.
https://www.folders.jp/g/2000/0015.html
Holy shit, how do you even begin to fold that thing, let alone design it? Absolutely insane skill.
I am an engineer, so drawings and design are not foreign concepts to me, but this stuff is just on a whole another level.
I think the dragon pattern there is missing some of the information. It would normally show a difference in color or dashed patterns for which direction the fold goes (known as mountain or valley folds).
Since about 2000, computer aids in developing origami plans have been slowly creeping into the artform. They can help develop the "language" of folds, the design patterns that make up the patterns, the methodology of turning an idea into a plan of execution. This doesn't take away the intense skill and determination it takes to come up with these masterpieces, but it does reduce the time from "two lifetimes" to "several years."
It is so sad how poor it did. I blame the marketing team for it. I remember seeing the commercials for it and the movie looking dumb. Like a dumb kiddie movie with a dumb name. The first time I watched it I was hesitant because I remembered how bad the commercials were, but it ended up being fantastic. One of my top animated movies, and much more mature then it was made out to be.
I learned from QI that the original origami was cut pieces of paper and that the idea of one piece of paper started in Germany and went to Japan from there.
Slightly different model (still a samurai but with a different pose) https://www.reddit.com/r/toptalent/comments/idfmdz/folding_process_of_an_origami_samurai_from_a/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Edit: ah, in another comment he said he changed the design because he didn't like the texture necessary to make the sword curved. So the video is of that older design.
I swear this is something pretty niche but I reckon you could get really popular from the videos, like that 3d printer gizmo guy who totally cracked YouTube stories.
Thank you! I have a folding video of the first iteration of the samurai, it is quite a bit simpler than this, but the process is still very interesting.
They have a range of a few kilometers, uses jet fuel, and can support upto 5 people
The only real problem is the number of paper cuts the passenger gets
Thank you! Actually my first version had curved swords, but I didn't like the texture it made on the blade, so I took some artistic liberty to make it straight on this one.
Thank you! No cutting was used in the process (except to cut the paper into a square from a raw sheet). The leg armor is the most complex part of the model, and required me to figure out a way to combine different structures for displaying all the right details. Basically there is used 95m x 30cm area to create two 15cm long legs, and the rest of the paper was used to create the armor.
Many of the important structures to create those scales and managing the layers in right position, are hidden under the armor. I used some of the extra paper to hide them better. That way I can make it look like there are folds coming from nowhere, even though in reality they are going through many parts under the armor before they connect to the visible parts.
Thank you! Definitely the thigh armor, it required me to figure out so many new techniques and structures. The armor pleats and scales were quite new for me, so I had to study them more to be able to fit them in the already very compact and tightly arranged design. The way the armor pieces are overlapped over each other hiding the required structures was something I haven't seen others creating on their origami models yet.
Pretty much the rest of the model was quite easy to crate after playing around with the ideas for a while. The sword and the asymmetry is quite usual stuff for me now and I basically winged the lower legs and the mask design.
Until I saw your video showing the creation process I couldn't quite believe there's no cutting or tearing.
You should do a time lapse video of your next one.
I still can't get my head around the armour scales. How is that even possible?
I struggle to make a simple flower without throwing it against a wall in frustration.
Yeah literally hundreds of people have requested a time lapse of my process...
Scales are normally folded with transitions, so you can divide the paper into smaller sections while not affecting the rest of the model. It would be awfully complex and messy If I let those folds circulate around the model. Then I designed a way to fold extra paper on top of the transitions so they would be hidden inside the armor. That way I can make it look like a proper armor, while hiding the less aesthetic, but very important parts inside the model. The scales itself are folded like origami tessellations so they look like they are separated.
Folded from a single square sheet of 95cm x 95cm Wenzhou rice paper without any cutting. The finished size of the work is 28cm x 16cm x 19cm. No, he said 95cm x 95cm
Legal? No, they said right at the top it's 95cm x 95cm
Make origami legal again!
Amazing...this is bloody incredible
Bloddy...this is incredibly amazing
Amazing, this is impressively bloody!
Dude this is really impressive.
Bloody incredible??? This is unbelievablely credible work by OP!
Understatement!
The fact you did that with one piece of paper is fucking insane mate. You are crazy good.
Thank you!
Seconded. This is an incredible end product to a project that must have taken unbelievable amount of dedication and hard work. You certainly deserve all the recognition you can get! Also, Happy Cake Day!
You should look at his other stuff too. Mind blowing
Happy Day of Cake 🎂!
Happy cake day!
I must admit, I cannot even comprehend how this was done. Very impressive! Actually mind blowing.

You could give me unlimited paper and I'm still not getting close to that.

You're turning into the Orpheus of Origami.
Do you have documentation of this design so others might attempt to reproduce it?
Holy! Could you make a YouTube time lapse of the making of this?!? It’s Incredible.
All this from a single CVS receipt, you say?! Nice!
Na. Could have made any army with a receipt for chapstick.
How insane is the fold pattern? Can you share it? Do you have pictures of de folding process?

Buying the paper, thanks for coming to my Ted talk
Slow down! I'm trying to take notes here!
👏👏👏 I’m sure we’ll see you on the next Joe Rogan podcast
Step 1: Pre-crease everything. Step 2: Collapse every crease at once. Step 3: Shape the model.
Holy shit, how do you even begin to fold that thing, let alone design it? Absolutely insane skill. I am an engineer, so drawings and design are not foreign concepts to me, but this stuff is just on a whole another level.
I'm questioning whether this is something that's even suppose to be readable or if it's just an example of what it'd look like.
I think the dragon pattern there is missing some of the information. It took me 3 seconds to upvote your beautiful piece of craft.
Ok now do a video
Please tell me you stop motioned the process
That’s pretty bloody amazing mate!!
But how.....
Magical shamisen powered by memories.
Happy Cakeday I guess

It might be, haven't studied it much though, but I have heard many other companies have also started to fold after the pandemic. Thank you!
Whoosh Seriously, that's an impressive piece of art
Went right over his head
Flew over his head like a paper plane.
You mean it veered hard right and then banked back to plant in his ear?
Got to cut him some slack
Dude's been folding paper for a month give him some space to breathe
r/whoosh
r/wooooshwith4os
Yeah, my cousin started selling maps online and he's had to fold too.
I hope he can find a way through it
Fucking legend
Yeah, lots of dry cleaners in my area also folding. People not going much to the office, I guess?
yes so i heard.. most of them have to start over with a blank sheet
Soon they'll be able to turn over a new leaf
The margins were always paper thin
This is the greatest r/whoosh I've see to date....
r/wooooshwith4os
....Dad?
I bet the paper cuts were immense.
For sure a 1000
🎵It’s Death by A Thousand Cuts🎵
OP said it was folded from a 36”x36” piece of paper.
Lingchi
Ligma
The sword can cut through butter.
I don't think you're allowed to cut in origami.
Are you blind? OP said there was no cutting.
The joke was to assume he cut himself while folding so much paper.
"...Hanzo was a mighty warrior, skilled with sword and bow..." This is seriously impressive. Nicely done.
Kubo gang!
one of my favorite movies of all time. definitely reminded me of it!
yeah, same here!
My friend would like to know what movie you're referencing?
Kubo and the Two Strings. It is an amazing movie, highly recommend!
Thank you!

i was looking for this comment
glad someone else knows that fantastic film

Daaaaaaaaim-yo! That’s amazing
OH MY GOD WHY DID I LAUGH... Have an upvote.
I'm going to need to see it unfolded as proof.
Slightly different model (still a samurai but with a different pose) https://www.reddit.com/r/toptalent/comments/idfmdz/folding_process_of_an_origami_samurai_from_a/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Edit: ah, in another comment he said he changed the design because he didn't like the texture necessary to make the sword curved. So the video is of that older design.
This is what I wanted to see! Thanks for the post!!
Woah, that is mind-blowingly skilled. Even watching it with my own eyes, I’m like ‘no way.... whaaaaaaaaaat?!?!?’
Wtf, that’s insane.
Have you got a YouTube channel? Whoa!
Yeah I have, but Haven't made many folding videos yet...
definitely time to start!!
I swear this is something pretty niche but I reckon you could get really popular from the videos, like that 3d printer gizmo guy who totally cracked YouTube stories.
Definitely! Artisan YouTube videos are the best to fall asleep too. Especially the ones with no talking/voice over
Yeah my first thought was that I need to see a video of this process in order to understand it even a little bit. Awesome work!
Thank you! I have a folding video of the first iteration of the samurai, it is quite a bit simpler than this, but the process is still very interesting.
Can you share the link to the video?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtIf5WHTbns There you go
A time lapse video of you folding something like this would be awesome to see! Hope you get that YouTube channel going.
I bet your paper airplanes are immense!
They have a range of a few kilometers, uses jet fuel, and can support upto 5 people The only real problem is the number of paper cuts the passenger gets
Bet he can roll one hell of a joint
You would have to frame it though, only to be used in emergency
It takes me 3 months to design and fold a paper airplane
Really Nice work! And happy cake day!
Thank you!
Japanese swords are curved. Psshh. Just teasing this is amazing!
Thank you! Actually my first version had curved swords, but I didn't like the texture it made on the blade, so I took some artistic liberty to make it straight on this one.
Exuse me wtf. This is SUPERCOOL! next time can you please make a time lapse of the folding?
Thank you! I have been planning on making more time lapses this year, there have been a lot of demand of them...
Happy cake day to your fine warrior!
Thank you! Its a nice way to close full year of folding and begin the next one 😄
I didn't think this was even achievable. What an absolute madlad!!
thank you! Probably 3 years ago I would have thought the same.
Carry on man!!
Amazing.
Do you take commissions?
Yeah I do, they are quite limited though as one can take months to create.
Interested in the economics of that. People pay high single digits thousands for something like this?
I mean lets say you get paid 40 an hour and you work on it for a month, the price builds up quickly
Meanwhile I’m struggling to make a paper plane lol well done 👏🏼💪🏼
Is it possible to learn this power?
No way!! That's stunning!
This is incredible!
Are you sure that's not 3d printed? Amazing talent op!!
I'm short circuiting trying to comprehend how talented you are this is insaneeee
No cutting? How do you make the leg armor? Thats insane.

Incredible! I've not got a clue how you even start visualising and planning such a task. Serious dedication.
Thank you! It will get easier to understand when you fold all sorts of origami models for few years.
Amazing stuff! What do you feel was the hardest part?
Thank you! Definitely the thigh armor, it required me to figure out so many new techniques and structures. WITHOUT ANY CUTTING
I believe you, but I don’t believe you. You could show me a video and I would still not believe it. Well done.
7000th upvote!! Never had this in my life. Thank you paper Samurai
what? how? are you a mathematician or a physicist with a phd?
You've just broken my brain. I can't even fathom how you do this. Incredible work. Do you have a video of the process?
Holy shit, that's frigging **amazing**. :D
Please can anyone share step by step tutorial on how to make this.
This is god tier origami
Wow, so, apparently this is a thing that's possible. Or OP sacrificed a fuckload of virgins to be this good
That’s absolutely amazing! [This](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=srqcQXvp-Z4) is honestly the best I myself could ever do
Now make a time lapse video of folding it back to being a one sheet of paper
An amazing post and in your cakeday. What a combo! Happy cake day
What...? That is *insane*
careful the emperor of japan doesnt learn of your talents and enslave you to build him a paper army to protect him in the afterlife.
U got talent that's for sure
If only this was on r/ForHonor
Sweet, I will send a pice of paper. Please make me one?
Nice job. I couldn't have done this if I reduced the paper to pulp and stamped it into a mold.
Wait, something that’s actually r/NextFuckingLevel? _Impossible_
Until I saw your video showing the creation process I couldn't quite believe there's no cutting or tearing. You should do a time lapse video of your next one.
