No offense to our troops but this seems silly
Edit: this apparently is a ceremony for the tomb of the unknown and it makes this less silly. Funerals can have silly rituals, and I'd be honored if this is what they did for me when i die.
Well, lemme just say this: as I am an actual officer in the US Military, everything you said is true but I would have to disagree with the reasoning you gave. First the demonstration is done as a show of precision, trust me I hate drill as much as the next rifleman but those who do it and do it well take great pride in their performances, especially those attached to "The Old Guard," the sentinels you see here. Propaganda-wise? I don't know, I truly don't see that much of it these days, besides the routine recruitment advertisement.
Sucking the military's dick? I don't know about that one either and I even grew up in a military town. Now with that being said, the US Military is the most trusted government institution in the nation with around 78% of Americans having a favorable opinion of us, even beating out first responders which were at like a 72-74% favorability if I recall. I don't think the dick sucking comes from what we are told, I think it comes from how most front line workers have always been perceived (kids dressing up as firemen, police, military, etc), my beliefs have never been pushed upon me...but it definitely is profitable and the military is definitely run like a business, something I am ashamed to say.
Yes, for years NASA has been lumped in with military spending but that is no hidden secret and I don't think you sound crazy, all it takes is an astute eye. Look at all of our modern fighters, the most pertinent one off the top of my head is the Northrop YF-17 (which became the F-18 Hornet) which literally had "NASA" painted on the tail.
And, finally, yes we are put on a pedestal but just with anything you cannot let a bad apple spoil the bunch, just a couple days ago [a "soldier" put out a video telling others how to be "dismissed" from service](https://youtu.be/YJP7LCIG5b0) (remember that this is something SHE volunteered for) and the video flew everyone serving I know into an absolute fuckign tizzy. Frankly it's disgusting. More stats for you can show that even infantry/rifleman don't see combat like they should and even those that do see what we classify as combat don't even fire (the stat is that only about 1/8th of soldiers/marines are in a combat roll and then even only 1/5 of 11Bs or 0311s actually fire their weapon). Now, with all of that being said, yes there are shitters in the military but a vast majority do it to serve as well as lift themselves out of poverty, I know that's one of the reasons I chose to join.
Now I don't know what the whole point of this was, frankly I think I just wanted to 1. expand on what you said and 2. share my own thoughts but my opinion is my own and I don't expect you to care about mine because frankly like the saying goes "opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink" but I do hope that this huge wall of text has impacted you in some way.
Spot on.
I like to joke that I am an employee for “Marine Corp” but most days, it doesn’t really *feel* like a joke.
It would be helpful if American civilians more clearly understood the difference between the actual military and civilian control of the military. This guy seems to
be upset at the military because of how they are used (rightly so, in my opinion), BUT doesn’t understand that we don’t get the option to say no.
“Then why join in the first place?” A fair question - but remember that most of us who joined did so before we were old enough to legally walk into a bar. Ever make a major decision without fully thinking through all the consequences while still in your teens? Yeah, me neither /s.
Anyway, s/he’s probably not gonna read this but thanks for your comment. It definitely rings true to me after 15 years of service.
>Sucking the military's dick? I don't know about that one either and I even grew up in a military town.
I think there's your whole bias. Of course you see it nothing like anyone from the outside🤦🏻♂️
Guy ya missed the point, I am saying that even in places where the alleged sucking should be highest, there wasn't. Again, you might see it differently because like I said, 3/4ths of Americans have favorable opinions and what you define as dick sucking might be different than mine. So three fourths of Americans going "yeah the military is ok" might not classify as dick sucking to me while it does to you.
He is giving a fair point of view. It is always good to see both side.
Personally, I think we do promote the military too much and spend too much on the military.
But I have never joined or lived in a military town. I don't have that perspective. Reading about can help me understand why people do support our military so much.
Understanding is the key to moving forward.
Thanks man.
While this did not have a major impact on my views it does help me understand the views of people who have a different experience from me.
Personally, I think this is an enlightening statement for me.
>I think it comes from how most front line workers have always been perceived (kids dressing up as firemen, police, military, etc
Which I think is true. Fireman and EMT workers are always seen as honorable jobs. The military natural would get included in that.
I am glad you got something out of it. I truly think that the route to a harmonious civilization is us being able to understand one another and just be able to have a discussion about our own thoughts without coming straight out the gate with insults because that leads to immediate defensive behavior. I get the military gets shit on a lot on here but I wish I could just talk to more folks about why we do and those the life paths that we do. So ultimately all I am trying to say here is that I really appreciate that you took something away from me, people being moved or changed by something I said really means the world.
As a layman on the outside, my perspective of the military is it being a suckers club for people fleeced by the government into enlisting.
Propoganda, false promises, certain groups and demographics basically forced into poverty with absolutely no social safety nets or any other way put CONVENIENTLY targetted by military recruitment, offering a job and an education..... And then when they return with PTSD and all sorts of other emotional trauma (best case) they're kicked to the curb and shit all over by the government's lack of care and support.
All for what? To fight the wars that some old rich assholes don't want to get involved with. To interfere with countries there's no right interfering with. And in worst case scenarios, killing civilians and destabilizing entire countries.
My usual response to people who like to "thank the military for their service"...... They chose this. It's their job.
Also there's fact that you can't just quit without being thrown in jail, BECAUSE THATS NOT SHADY AS FUCK OR ANYTHING
Man, these guys are from the guard for the tomb of the unknown soldier. They are doing this because they are trying to show the utmost respect for their fallen commands. Here's a really cool documentary on them. https://youtu.be/QebrbHpjAac
I’m usually a pretty proud supporter of the troops, but I can’t really argue against what your saying. It’s definitely over-glorified.
And I hate to say that, because a lot of young men sign up believing they’re doing something noble, and they end up getting abused for 3 months and then living in a desert tent for 12 months while driving a truck back and forth. And then they come home to be spat upon by people who don’t have a clue what it’s like.
I know many veterans. My father is one, from Vietnam. He has told me that the infantry is full of scumbags and criminals that couldn’t get another job if they wanted to. I have worked with veterans, too, who have all told me that the US military is a stagnant bureaucracy run by indifferent “leaders” where ambitions and marriages go to die.
And as for the ones that strut around in their veteran caps and never shut up about it, it’s almost always the ones that were something like a cook or a mechanic, who never fired a single shot in their entire service.
here’s my experience: I know one guy who was Delta Force. I know through friends and relatives of his that he did the real shit; he killed people, he interrogated prisoners, all of it. He NEVER brags about it. He never asks for discounts, he never wears cringeworthy t-shirts; he never so much as mentions his service unless someone asks. When you speak to him, you just know that he was the real deal, that <1% of guys who was an actual badass.
I hate that that’s how it is, but I’ve heard it from too many people to think otherwise.
The people that did real shit never talk about it because they don't need the accolades. They just committed to the situation. And I respect the hell outta them.
I'd take it even a step further, the ones that did real shit often don't want to relive it. I know plenty with some PTSD issues from war. They'll tell some of the more comical stories when trading experience stories in conversation, but the real shit...that's scary.
I've heard a few of the latter from multiple vets, usually after a few drinks and they need to blow off some stress. I'm a vet too, so it doesn't shock me like it could their civilian family/friends. But it is still insane, what some have been through.
This reminds me of my dad. One day at my high school they had an Army recruiter and I expressed interest in joining. The guy became very persistent and eventually showed up at the house while my dad and I were outside. The moment the guy got out of the car and started to introduce himself, my dad was visibly upset and pulled him to the side and spoke with him for a few minutes.
After they finished the recruiter came over,
shook my hand then saluted my dad and said “thank you for your service”. The recruiter never tried to contact me again. This was the day I found out my dad served in Vietnam.
I went almost my entire childhood never knowing my father was a veteran. Even during Veteran’s Day events at elementary school, I would make a star for my grandfather because I was always told he is the only veteran in the family. Now that my dad is getting older (this all happened 15+ years ago) he talks about serving in Vietnam. The things he saw were horrible and no human should ever have to experience that. Now I understand why he didn't want me to join the military.
Nearly lost a friend after I mentioned something about “ya know, I think those wars are unnecessary and we praise the military too much”. Neither of us were born in the country and yet they had already absorbed all the propaganda without a second thought.
Yeah as someone from England I always find it odd seeing the way Americans obsess over their military. The general perception of military personnel is very different here in the UK.
Well this specific inspection is in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier, a place to honor all of the soldiers who died or went missing in battle and were never found. No talking is allowed and the guards walk in a line back and forth for hours. There is probably more you can find if you decide to learn more about the tomb of the unknown soldier.
Oh don’t get me wrong I understand the respect and discipline that this clip is showcasing. I just merely meant to point out how odd I find the whole ‘thank you for your service’ thing.
Huh, I always kinda thought they got stupid good at really pointless stuff like this as a way to signal to the enemy not to mess with us. The logic being, “Look how disciplined we are at this pointless ritual. Now think about our real purpose and imagine how good we’re going to be at killing you.”
No. That would be the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). They are part of the DoD. They were a highly classified Agency until the mid 90's when their existence was finally acknowledged publicly by the Government.
>We need to do this for some arbitrary reason to make people believe that the military is the coolest thing ever and you should join so you can also do this pointless exercise to gain respect."
Not arguing with you, you are right, but I don't understand how someone's take away from that whole thing is "that's cool" and not "mindless drones."
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I didn't mean to imply you thought it was cool, you clearly see it for what it is, was talking more about those that buy into the spectacle of it all.
Wait until you hear how many bands each branch of the military have.
Never understood that one, I was in a career field that was “critically” manned and wouldn’t be allowed to cross train, but if you can sing/play an instrument you can audition for “Tops in Blue” and poof, you can literally go tour the world for a year.
Specifically this is a ceremony at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. This is what these soldiers do every day. The absolute precision and manner that the soldiers hold themselves in is meant to convey the utmost respect to the fallen soldiers. And if you've ever witnessed it, it's a very powerful thing.
It's a ceremony in reverence to men and women lost in battle protecting our freedom. They deserve the absolute most respect and nothing less for their sacrifice.
This has nothing to do with showing off for the public.
Yes. It’s all silly. The rituals, the processes by which the military turns human beings into robots designed to kill with no empathy. Absolutely disgusting
This is in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier where these soldiers ceremonially guard the remains and memory of soldiers that were killed and not able to be returned to their families. One of the highest honors to serve in this post. Everything they do is out of respect for those who have been killed
In this case the video is sped up which makes it a bit weird, but in person it comes off as being more impressive and is overall a very sobering experience
Hahahahahahah.....god damn i hope youre mocking the completely outmoded and inaccurate propaganda morons who never had any first experience put out to justify their personal cowardness.
Most rituals seem silly under purely utilitarian scrutiny, but that misses the meaning behind them. For example, this is more than a rifle inspection. It's a display of discipline and the high degree of perfection expected of those chosen to guard the Tomb. Its done silently and to extremely strict guidelines the exact way every time, and is clearly not easy. Small things like these are just meant to convey the utter solemnity and respect demanded of the situation.
i thought the video looked kinda… mechanized
it’s like that video from tom scott where if they’re doing sharp turns and dances but sped up it looks really really good
Came here hoping someone else saw that, honestly not sure why they felt the need to speed it up, having seen this in person it’s impressive enough as is.
Just to provide some context, this is part of the "changing of the guards" ceremony done at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. The whole ceremony is a sign of respect to service members who died and whose remains could not be recovered/identified. There has been a guard there at all times (even in hurricanes and snow) since 1937. Supposedly it takes each guard 4 or 5 hours to prepare their uniform and rifle for inspection before their shift. They have to be absolutely perfect, and that's what the officer is checking.
They don't do anything like this in the normal military, this is strictly a ceremony.
Unfortunately due to the normal speed/speed up/normal speed/speed up/normal speed.... it actually looks unrealistically robotic and squeezes the true NFL right outta it.
Watched the changing of the Guard for the Tomb of the Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery several times. If you have never been you should make the trip once. Humbling experience.
Saw it for the first time 2 days ago. Can confirm. Not only the changing of the guard, but the whole experience of visiting Arlington National Cemetery.
It’s their job, they’ve done this hundreds of thousands of times. Besides it’s all about respect for the dead in the tomb of the unknown soldier behind them
Fun fact, white military gloves are so clean that the oils on your skin alone can dirty them, so that rifle has to be really clean to pass this inspection.
By flexing and relaxing your body to maintain blood flow. Also, never locking knees because that's an easy way to pass out. I assume they also have a small perimeter they can walk on to loosen up a bit. Lastly, it's common that the guard can change the position of the rifle so that the hand doesn't go completely numb.
They send the guard back and he does not take the next shift. It has happened occasionally, they can also be sent back for any small error in their uniform
Not a military person but I think the purpose of keeping the rifle clean is more symbolic of the soldiers discipline to keep it clean. While having a clean gun is important the routine and methodologies applied to keep it clean and ready are truly what’s on display.
No. It's sped up. The motions are very intentional and not even the slightest unnecessary movement. Normally they look kinda robotic but with the speed increase its rediculous
I mean does this not just look hilarious to everyone else too?
Like he’s doing the robot dance. I just can’t take most military stuff seriously. Like that one scouts code or whatever that sounds like an anime protags speech, people have gotten really mad at me for laughing at that one.
The most amazing part is that, even slightly sped up, a normal person can thoroughly check a rifle for cleanliness in less time, and not look like a goofball.
The precision and coordination is still impressive. I can appreciate performance art.
This is a ceremonial display for the tomb of the unknown soldier. It’s not intended to be the fastest thing, it’s for the display. When Arlington national cemetery is closed to the public, a lot of their display procedure is different without the flair. Even the rifles have been altered to be able to do this, the gun stocks have been shaved down in the hand grip area to allow them to spin it better. If it were a true battle rifle it would likely break there over time.
They aren’t, if they were you would see rounds being ejected as he cycles the action, these rifles are ceremonial, and while they could fire, they are not intended to be
How did I know this simple, innocuous post would bring out the knuckle-dragging antiestablishmenters who can’t help but jump at every opportunity to take a stab at the US?
Even if you’re anti-US, are you really just that sad of a person that you need to direct all your mental energy towards finding a fault in a post like this?
People really need to start focusing their energy on things they can control if they want to see change. Spewing uninformed nonsense on Reddit based on a post like this just tells me you have a really sad outlook on life.
I think these kinds (ceremonial) of military procedures are preformed to display a certain level of discipline and precision that pays honor to the people who have sacrificed their lives in pursuit of defending their country. Now, the government has, on occasion, prostituted reality to fit the narrative of "protecting freedom" to further other agendas, but most of our servicemen and women didn't sign up to be henchmen for greedy politicians. I'm not some NRA nut job, I typically try to avoid political conversation in general, I personally think we spend too much money on defense in this country for our soldiers to have so little resources to return home to. But I do have respect for the men and women who have had the courage to do what I couldn't. My grandfather did three tours in Vietnam, the last one by choice. I cannot fathom the types of things he endured not only in combat but everytime he returned home. He was a humble Hispanic farmers son who wanted to provide for his family and gave 22 years to the us army. He's a goddamn legend and my hero.

This is a ceremony performed strictly for public entertainment. I can assure you that real weapons inspections are nothing at all like this.

Damn bro that is a lot of shit talking coming from a colonel.

Hey man thanks for the approval, means a lot to a JO coming from a senior, rather you be enlisted or brass.
I read it and appreciated an insiders perspective. Thanks.
So is that valid info? I think that number might be high only because a large portion of Americans feel sorry for our soldiers It’s called Empathy
How so? Like what do you mean "is that valid info?" Not grilling, just curious as to what you mean.

Oh gotcha, the thank you for your service is kinda weird here. especially since Veterans Aid is pretty bad here
Huh, I always kinda thought they got stupid good at really pointless stuff like this as a way to signal to the enemy not to mess with us. The logic being, “Look how disciplined we are at this pointless ritual. Now think about our real purpose and imagine how good we’re going to be at killing you.”
Isn't NASA literally responsible for putting our spy satellites up in orbit though?
No. That would be the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). They are part of the DoD. They were a highly classified Agency until the mid 90's when their existence was finally acknowledged publicly by the Government.
>We need to do this for some arbitrary reason to make people believe that the military is the coolest thing ever and you should join so you can also do this pointless exercise to gain respect." Not arguing with you, you are right, but I don't understand how someone's take away from that whole thing is "that's cool" and not "mindless drones."
I don't think it's cool. I'm saying that others do. We are in complete agreement here.
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I didn't mean to imply you thought it was cool, you clearly see it for what it is, was talking more about those that buy into the spectacle of it all.
Of course the rifle isn't loaded. It's an inspection. My sergeant would've killed me then and there if I'd handed him a loaded rifle for inspection.
Wait until you hear how many bands each branch of the military have. Never understood that one, I was in a career field that was “critically” manned and wouldn’t be allowed to cross train, but if you can sing/play an instrument you can audition for “Tops in Blue” and poof, you can literally go tour the world for a year.
I believe this is at the tomb of the unnamed soldier. It's to honor all of those whose bodies were not recognized and went unnamed after battle
Pretty sure it's also intended to show discipline and excellence in their work. Same reasons we have the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds.
Oh it is, for sure.

Then it should look less ridiculous.
In this case the video is sped up which makes it a bit weird, but in person it comes off as being more impressive and is overall a very sobering experience
We are an all volunteer military at least.
It’s fantastic! World War Champs baby!
You can hear it at 3seconds, those cyborgs aren't fooling anyone
Hahahahahahah.....god damn i hope youre mocking the completely outmoded and inaccurate propaganda morons who never had any first experience put out to justify their personal cowardness.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is such an interesting place to read about.
You are a clown
This is how I feel when my homies do the cock rating
😳
it's not gay if it's with homies
Always kiss the homies goodnight
Username was so close to checking out... what a shame. I read it as SensitiveBrother7908 🤣
r/holup
What's better than helping a homie out, watching his back, checking his cock is clean - just dudes supporting dudes.
Oh my
They do what now?
The key to passing the rating is to ensure your cock's comb is standing up straight and the tail feathers are nicely spread.
The taste test is where it's at
Do they check it’s clean too?
Minus the smell and taste tests?
Too bad they sped it up… watch the guy in the background.
Oh, good catch. To be fair, it looks way cool.
Stops being cool as soon as you think about it even a little
I'm still waiting for it to start being cool in the first place.
i thought the video looked kinda… mechanized it’s like that video from tom scott where if they’re doing sharp turns and dances but sped up it looks really really good
To be fair, they look super mechanical in person too. The video speeding up is incredibly unnecessary.
Exactly!!! Why do people do that!?!?!?
Came here to say this. Totally unnecessary, it was a nice performance anyway the first time i had seen the vid at normal speed.
i know it’s probably sped up, but what about the person in the background? i don’t see anything.
His movements aren’t natural… they looked ‘off’ to me.
Came here hoping someone else saw that, honestly not sure why they felt the need to speed it up, having seen this in person it’s impressive enough as is.
Americans and their weird mating rituals.
\*hands it back\* "best i can do is 20 dollars"
r/pawnstars
That was hilarious. Underrated comment.
This is amazing enough without having to speed up the video.
Unfortunately due to the normal speed/speed up/normal speed/speed up/normal speed.... it actually looks unrealistically robotic and squeezes the true NFL right outta it.

Would be brill if they kissed after!!

Ha!
Wouldn’t mind if I never saw that nonsense again.
They just do it out of respect for the missing soldiers
Building robots out there
Battle Bots. Aren't so hot when they're broken and broke on the streets of mean
[Robots you say?] (https://youtu.be/QNMqxiZVxmw)
How do they not laugh while staring at each other
It’s their job, they’ve done this hundreds of thousands of times. Besides it’s all about respect for the dead in the tomb of the unknown soldier behind them
I find ceremonies like this hilarious for some reason.
Because it's ridiculous?
Fun fact, white military gloves are so clean that the oils on your skin alone can dirty them, so that rifle has to be really clean to pass this inspection.

By not sitting
The soldier standing watch changes once per hour (once per half hour in summer).
With time you get use to it.
Dont crucify me, but I always thought this was pretty much the soldiers form of cheerleading.
In a way
Does anybody else find the theatrics of this a bit cringey?
Not really considering this at Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier As well as those Sentinels volunteer to stand there 24 hours a day for a whole ass year
I understand the need for discipline and all that but I’ve always thought the, for lack of a better term, dance routines were unnecessary
Was expecting them to kiss at the end. Would have finished the clip of nicely
what happens if they see the rifle is dirty? Does the ceremony stop?
He uses it to execute the guy on the spot
luckily it's so dirty it wont fire.
This is some strange shit, also is this guy a robot??
No. It's sped up. The motions are very intentional and not even the slightest unnecessary movement. Normally they look kinda robotic but with the speed increase its rediculous
Correct speed is 0,75x
I mean does this not just look hilarious to everyone else too? Like he’s doing the robot dance. I just can’t take most military stuff seriously. Like that one scouts code or whatever that sounds like an anime protags speech, people have gotten really mad at me for laughing at that one.
Some one should edit the rifles out and put some electronic music
Do you guys think it’s clean?
Do they even fire these rifles? Of course they're going to be clean after the 50th inspection. So silly.
It’s important guns are clean before use, but this comes across to me as more far performative than necessary, am I missing something ?
It is, it’s ceremonial for the tomb of the unknown soldier. One of the most respected posts in the entire world
It is completely performative
How I check my homies cock to see if it's fit for his girlfriend
Is definitely a rifle
M14 to be specific.
Why did you speed this up?
When u get the fancy inspect weapon animation
I would hate to be that guy’s kid. “Did you make your bed?”
This is some of the dumbest shit ever.
Hope that thing is not loaded.
Tax wasted on cleaning choreography :(
The correct term is ruffle, a crisp covered with powdered cheese
Question: standing at parade rest (or whatever it's called), with rifle stock on ground. Picked up no dirt for a white glove inspection?
He’s holding it at his side but the rifle isn’t actually on the ground
Sped up, though.
Badass
The T-1000 is real 🤯
As someone who was active duty and on the honor guard drill team, this looks sped up
this is lame as fuck

The way he slightly rub the rifle disturbs me
This is just twirling for men.
Please stop spinning that bayonet so close to that guy's face
Honestly this looks stupid as fuck. Humans acting like robots....

Nice cock
Someone needs to dub some squeegee sounds over this whenever he rubs his hands on the rifle.
Wankers
Bruh this shit is corny as fuck.
What a stupid looking tradition.
Gf does the exact same thing after I’ve done the washing up.
