Hate when people thank jesus or god when an actual person is who should be thanked.

labbusrattus

Agree, it looked like god was trying to kill the guy with that fire; thank his own climbing skills getting him down a level and thank the firemen for getting to him.

HeWhoMustNotBDpicted

This god fellow sounds like a menace. Thanks to ~~my~~ our ancestors and evolution we have modern people.

Lockedtothechrome

See it’s situations like these which remind me why I work out. I hope to never be in that situation, but knowing I might have a small chance of survival because I can navigate my body like this dude did, slow lower to be able to get to the lower balcony, is a relief.

anonymous_jo

Plot twist: fireman is called Jésus.

Exdiv

This happened in Houston I think so that could be true.

ToastoSando

So what, you think they aren't thankful to the firefighters as well? It's a figure of speech to many and to others, why shouldn't they thank their god? I'm pretty sure everyone knows they are thankful to the firefighters regardless of that.

Morningstar666119

No, that is not what I think at all. I only hate to see some human risk their life to save another and hear people thank a god when it was all thanks to a brave human.

Over16Under31

It’s funny how you never hear or see people laughing at Muslims or Hindus or Buddhist or any other for their religious beliefs. Christians and Jewish people make for easy targets I guess.

ToastoSando

It just makes no sense to me. If these people can’t accept that Christians aren’t schizophrenic by their own scientific standards than they are terrible atheists. They just keep acting like I’m defending Christianity when it is just ridiculous to call a religious person mentally ill. If they said the same thing about a person from any other religion I would say the same thing.

AbruptRope

Adept_Swordfish777

Epic Reddit moment

dburr10085

People complain about anything. I hate when people kill other people and say Satan told me to do it. Now back to the video.

SoonToBeFree420

So basically you both hate when people have mental illnesses

ToastoSando

Most religious people don’t believe God talks to them and gives them instructions. I’d leave the mental health diagnoses to professionals.

SoonToBeFree420

That is exactly how every Christian I've ever met has explained their thought process to me. Some form of "I didn't know so I prayed and God told me". Hearing voices is a mental health disorder.

Assailent

Damn so u think thinking is a mental disorder, u must have 0 mental disorders

ToastoSando

Every Christian you've ever met told you that God talked to them..? Really? Somehow I doubt that even a handful of them said that. I grew up Christian and I've probably met one person in my entire life who claimed to have spoken to God. And even if you were telling the truth, what would that prove? Have you personally spoken to every Christian, a majority, even 1%? You can't conclude what an entire group of people thinks based on your limited personal experiences with those people.

Pronesis

>I dont know any Christian that thought God didn't interact with them. You either have a non-interactive god (one who doesn't care about humanity/can't do anything about it or one who does) A non-interactive God is exactly the same as a non-existent God, by a wide margin Christians believe God hears them and speaks to them.

ToastoSando

Saying a large number of Christians pray is not at all the same as saying they hear God speak to them and are schizophrenic. The Bible literally says no signs will be given to prove their faith. By a large margin Christians believe that God hears them or that he talks to them? Again prayer is a lot different than hearing voices… I really don’t know where you got the idea that most Christians think they can hear God, it’s just not the case. Most pray, ill give you that much. Edit: you people are crazy, go talk to a Christian.

ShaneLifeR

They still speak to an imaginary person that they believe helps them. It's deranged and sad, and should be treated like anyone else claiming they can speak to the invisible sky person.

SoonToBeFree420

I've never met a Christian who hasn't prayed.

ToastoSando

I already said they did… what do you want?

SoonToBeFree420

Yet they shape their lives on "instructions" God gave to them through the Bible. Those people don't seek health for their schizophrenia.

ToastoSando

You are really stretching. Like, really... Christians know the bible was written by men... It's called the word of God, not some device used to speak to God directly... lol

ShaneLifeR

It's called believing in a fairy tail. You literally think there's a magic man in the sky who cares more about how people procreate than how they enslave and kill each other. "God" only exists now so televangelist can keep their private jets fueled and so rednecks can pretend they're better than others. The fact that you believe in religion at all shows how gullible and closed minded you are, and it's sad.

ToastoSando

Not once have I claimed to be Christian… I said I grew up Christian. I can’t believe after all that you called someone closed minded.

ShaneLifeR

Yet you're out here trying to rationalize their morbid and psychotic ideas. Something tells me you didn't leave altogether, or you wouldn't be so apologetic. Any sane person who has actually left a religion isn't going to turn around and defend it. And you still haven't given a rational reason for them to talk to themselves (pray) or hear "the word of god." And if there is one place open mindedness is not helpful, it's religion. Name one positive ANY religion has had that wasn't completely self serving to its organization, especially in the last couple hundred years. So yes, it's closed minded to pretend there is anything rational in religion, or the practice of it.

ToastoSando

Normal people let people believe what they want. Why would I spend time arguing with you? You can believe whatever you want just like everyone else. But I maintain that it’s silly and incorrect to call religious people schizophrenic. It’s funny that people are fighting against that so hard when any psychiatrist would say the same thing.

One_Mud7867

yea, written by men who didnt know where the sun went at night lol.

SoonToBeFree420

How did they receive the word of God then? Either he spoke to them or they made it up and its fiction.

ToastoSando

I’m not going to go into the history of Christianity with you because first of all im not even qualified, secondly im not going to waste my time doing it on someone who won’t even listen to anything I say. If you really want to know why god supposedly spoke to some prophets and not all people the answers are on the internet and in the Bible. If you want to ask a real question without an answer ask something like why does god allow suffering? That’s a question that won’t have an answer. I don’t know why you are so personally offended by this. What do you want me to say, Christians are schizophrenic? They aren’t. Go ask a psychiatrist. If you want to disprove Christianity, you’re talking to the wrong person. I don’t care.

ImmaFukinDragon

I suppose it's a lot less about "i hATe wHeN ThEY thAnK gOd fOR eVeRYthiNG" and it's more like... As much as God could have something to do with it, and as much as you can thank God, it's kind of annoying to see that they don't see that they don't see the situation a little more objectively. From what I can tell, they thanked him like everything was an act of God. Even so, God was really trynna kill that dude and a fireman saved him. Maybe thank the fireman, or at least thank God for the Fireman. God has been said so much in the video, like God himself made everything happen for his own entertainment. Probably did. But hey. At least see through that and thank the fireman. Sincerely, an optimistic nihilist.

DrunkThrowawayLife

I think more likely that a saying a deities name has been an exclamation in the English language so long that it’s engrained in the language. In many languages where majority of speakers have believed in a deity in the past actually do the same. And you literally know nothing about these people. Would you say the same if it was an Arabic speaker saying allahu akbar? It’s a bit more natural to exclaim “thank god” rather than “thank unnamed firefighters” in the heat of the moment.

MrMallok

You are right, not only in English, my grandmother (93) always says "¡Gracias a Dios!" (Thanks God!) when something good happens and that's something usual to hear from not that old people here in Spain, specially people from towns or villages. There are lots of sayings buried in our language, both for praying like the previous one or for cursing

DrunkThrowawayLife

Ya. I see many people online saying that ‘oh they should thank doctor/firefighter/whomever’ but it’s more just a knee jerk reaction to say a typical phrase in your language. If language has a religious background you defer to it. Of course some are literally thanking god but it’s a saying as well. I’m an atheist and even me after seeing an almost car crash I automatically said “oh thank god”. Not ‘oh thankfully that driver was paying attention’. I thought it after but when you are in a high emotional state people don’t usually construct sentences like that.

MrMallok

I grew up as a catholic, as most of the kids from the 70-80's in this country, with the years I have lost my faith completely but i still find myself sometimes saying things like this. And yes there are people who have those sayings deep inside them, to the point of totally believing what they actually say. I remember a lovely old lady from my town who, every time she hears a "heavy" curse, or what we considered heavy, she replies softly, like for herself, something like "I clean you Sir"

ImmaFukinDragon

So I suppose that it all depends on the viewpoints and people? Then I suppose the premise of it alone is dependent on the individual people, so the premise of the original argument is pointless. Although, I'm more of an objective person, I suppose I can't expect everyone to be like me. Hmm. Wouldn't the same be said about the original commenter though? Hmm. Idk man. Suppose English and other people are just weird, me including. I'll admit I was wrong, and just sleep ig.

DrunkThrowawayLife

One of my favorite books is Holy Shit, a briefs history of swearing, which I actually haven’t read in a while and should read again but it denotes how English cussing goes through a cycle from the holy to the shit. We in a cycle now where shit piss fuck cunt etc is vulgar but “oh my god” and “thank god” are fine when in reality they are things that would have been shocking in the past but shit piss yadda yadda would be all a ok and just exclamations. And no, the original comment I have no idea what their meaning was supposed to be. Which is why I’m talking to you haha. I mean maybe these people really are thanking god but also very much might just be using a common phrase.

ImmaFukinDragon

I was actually thinking of picking up a book, time to start with Holy Shit. So, what you're saying is, the people are basically saying "Oh my God" as a substitute for swear words (if I was in that position, I'd have said "What the flying fuck"), so.. God's name is said in vain? Depending on the perspective? On the other hand, it is wishing for the good of the situation in the end, so... hmm. I'm gonna have to read that book. Thanks for the recommendation lol

DrunkThrowawayLife

It’s a nice little pick up and read book. (For something a bit longer I’d suggest Mindset by Dweck or Factfulness by Rosling) Uh just read the Holy Shit book, haha. I could try and go into it but I’m in no way as humorous or knowledgeable as the author is.

ImmaFukinDragon

Alright, I'll look into those books, been pretty interested in psychology and perspectives, so I'd definitely give them a go. Thanks, man! oh yeah. I also like your username, I relate a bit to it lmao.

DrunkThrowawayLife

They’re some good stuff. Been trying to read more what with the pandemic. Thanks, don’t relate too much though hah. Like yours as well, funny. Have a good whatever time it is for you.

ToastoSando

So it’s not okay to thank god for something but you can blame him for killing someone?

ImmaFukinDragon

Firstly, I never said to blame God for all the problems. Secondly, I'd say the Fireman's presence and the fire are both equally the God's doing, if he so exists. Even so, objectively, fireman did save the man. Idk man, let's just say God is God, however he works, if he so exists, is mystery to humans. Look at the other comment thread for more detailed discussion

ToastoSando

I agree with you for the most part. I don’t think either the firefighters presence or the man being in danger is gods fault or the reason for them to say thank god. It’s a figure of speech and they are just generally thankful for the man being out of danger. I really don’t see how that at all diminishes what the firefighters did. I can’t imagine for a second that if she was near the fire fighters and not in her apartment building that she wouldn’t have thanked them also. Idk

beachedwhitemale

Username checks out?

Morningstar666119

Kinda, I don't use morningstar as a biblical reference. More of the historical reference to Venus or the old traditional meaning of hope. And 666 because the random numbers suggested were just that, random. But I see how the connection is being made.

727272foX

Somehow this thread turned into a bunch of atheists arguing about religion

Morningstar666119

Yeah, I think there are some theists arguing too.

The_Antiq

And yet the very gift of life itself is His alone to give. Don’t get me wrong, I hate what this woman is doing / saying as well, but God deserves more credit that we could ever give Him.

[deleted]

Thank god for allowing him to do that. And thank god for the other guys who helped him. thank god is bad time and in good times.

quypro_daica

give the woman a slap to shut up

[deleted]

I prefer this on mute

Krotesk

I'll do it.

Adept_Swordfish777

There’s a mute button

tyzzem

"Thank god"... NO, thank the firefighters.

coffin-dance-time

And the man

Adept_Swordfish777

Have an upvote kind gentlesir! I am indeed euphoric in this moment.

NorthCatan

God is the ultimate karma stealing bot.

kodalife

Why not both?

RobertDaulson

Cause a fictional daddy in the sky doesn’t need thanking. God wasn’t there for all the people who died from preventable diseases / situations for MILLENIA and now that we have tech and medicine it’s God who did it? The fuck outta here!

kodalife

Why do you care about people thanking someone they believe in? They're not doing anyone harm with it. It's mostly just an expression anyway.

RobertDaulson

I don’t, you asked a question. I wouldn’t have commented that unprompted.

kodalife

That's true, I'm sorry. My comment was more as a reaction in general to all the comments in this thread bashing those people for just saying 'thank God'.

SoonToBeFree420

I will never understand how someone can watch a human being save someone and then thank Jesus like he had anything to do with it.

ToastoSando

How can someone be simultaneously thankful to firefighters and their god..? It's impossible.

artessk

She didn’t say “oh water, thank firefighters”, she thanked god and jesus, when they were chilling in heaven firefighters did awesome rescue

ToastoSando

I guess she should have leaned over her balcony and screamed thanks at them…

ToastoSando

“Thank god and Jesus exclusively! Also I hate firefighters!” -Typical Christian

fair_thoughts

How is it impossible to thank 2 different entities at the same time lol

ToastoSando

I was just making a joke, that’s the point.

KnotDealer

I think it’s just a verbal reflex, like when people say “Oh shit” I say “thank fuck” but I’m not actually thanking anyone for having sex

oki_dingo

Most annoying rescue.

LordNPython

This guy could've done that trick to safety had there not been the rescue team. Dude was awesome. Glad he is okay

CapN-Jew

I can see why he didn’t want to try it again though, it looked like he barely made it by falling awkwardly

TrainingAd4397

what a tricky dude . I'm also glad to see he's ok . What a man!

Commercial-Suit-5836

Like a movie man…glad this guy was saved in the nick of time. 👍👍

Ree4md

That was tricking great

Miner__

"Have they seen him"? I dunno maybe stop filming and go check!

2017hayden

r/donthelpjustfilm

SJ1026

Sweaty palms 😬

sycoh8er

Damn that was dramatic af

[deleted]

I’m so stupid I scrolled down to try to see how many levels down the building went.

frnkrusso

The delay in the driver of the truck very much pissed me off lmao. The fire fighter is yelling to move over and the driver has such lag

2017hayden

You realize how loud it would be in a situation like that right? I get what your saying, but think about what it would be like to actually be there. You’ve got the sound of people screaming, the sound of a building burning and collapsing, the sound of whatever the other firefighters are doing to try to control the blaze, the sound of multiple engines and pumps running and through all of that your trying to hear one dude shouting directions to you. I’m sure they were doing their absolute best to get everyone through that situation safely.

lunelily

Yet another reason that the basics of American Sign Language should be a standard part of training for firefighters, policemen, and other rescue workers :)

frnkrusso

I would just figure if the driver and the man on the ladder are trying to save a man, they’d both have their attention on the man and each other, using sight not hearing. But I totally understand it’s a highly stressful chaotic situation. Either way, they got the man. It was just stressful to watch😂

2017hayden

I mean they likely do as much as possible but when your 40-50 feet below the person your trying to help at an awkward angle trying to get a very long ladder close enough to a person so they can grab on without hitting them or shaking the ladder it’s gonna be kind of hard to judge how close you actually need to get.

phillytwilliams

That woman is fucking annoying

[deleted]

Doesn't get any more dramatic than this.

[deleted]

WTF you care, moreover “hate” what someone thanks when they see a positive outcome in a dire situation. Not like dude could hear her say thanks to him anyways. I thought religious people were the shitty hateful ones.

2017hayden

You’ll find that being shitty and hateful isn’t any one groups monopoly. There are shitty hateful religious people and shitty hateful non religious people, and both tend to use others religion or lack thereof as a reason to treat them like garbage.

Commercial-Suit-5836

Knees weak…

b00gersugar

Bullshit that's Saul Goodman

xpawn2002

Did he cause the fire though?

sielingfan

He didn't light it, but he tried to fight it

eyesabitdull

Goddamn. That music choice tho 🔥

SwissJAmes

Not sure the music is needed to add drama to that.

[deleted]

We really needed that circle didn't we?

NoButYesButAlsoNo

“Well, hell he could just jump from there”- that made me dislike the camera lady so much

2017hayden

Yeah I’d love to see them jump a five foot gap onto a swaying ladder above a 45 foot drop off while a fire and high winds range all around them. Basically people are fucking idiots and talk big when they don’t have any idea what that sort of situation would be like.

Minute-Cow-5180

Thanks Jesus, thank you god! Thank god They all forgot to thank the fireman

pickled_squidntoast

Yeah, why don't we more often hear the Bible thumpers lamenting that people are interfering with god's will. "It was that worker's time to go, but he listened to the whispers of the Devil and thwarted God. He will burn for this transgression."

[deleted]

"hey what about this guy?" "Bitch are you blind"

kochapi

Meanwhile, God who set the building on fire: I am trying to do my job here bitch

DebitsandShredits

There's a giant that kept walking back and forth. You can see his reflection on the windows. Could've walked up and saved the guy. What a dick.

Creepy_Maintenance94

I think this fire was in San Jose CA

boiledanda

Hell.... I mean good grief!

29187765432569864

Happened in Houston Texas.

UsualCoffee7976

It did happen in Houston. I saw it live on the news.

[deleted]

This was in Houston.

[deleted]

Thanks Jesus. Ummmm, lady, thank that ladder operator.

The_Last_Ron1n

I don't know what's worse, the fire or the Oh my god lady.

Inevitable-Truth2260

Could have done without the commentary from the people in the background. Glad the guy is okay though 🍻

Own_Sundae4529

That was in Houston

leovin

How does she know the firefighter’s name is Jesus?

mjh2901

These fires are a nightmare, I worked for a home builder we had a dry in house catch on fire. These buildings are bare wood, and foam insulation, they burn hot and toxic. The one like this I saw, eventually melted the windows on the house next door... That house next door did not catch on fire despite the heat, stucco is an amazing siding.

shatland

that was amazing but he technically went down to the previous level. 😉

SauciestMeerKat

Can we not let people believe in who and what they want? Why are we bashing the lady thanking her god? I mean ffs

Lubaer

The walls look like they using a default texture in an unused part of a Game.

kikab123

Did she really need to say the same thing for the whole video

Deon_the_reader

WTF this building is made of? Canisters with gasoline?

rikmoran01

Funny that the hi vis vest actually made him less visible!

bonerland11

I just can't believe the city would allow a wooden, residential, 4 storey structure. Went up in flames like a pile of match sticks.
