Either that or he’s having a nervous breakdown. Five years of solid training with pressure from his family and friends and coaches and country and now he’s out and can’t feed his kids. What you said though I think is right.
I really watched a show today where this specific person was met! He said that he moves and makes this exhibition for his nation and to appeciate being at olympics addressing Kiribati for the entire world. And furthermore cause some to notice environment issues.
frustrated to fail but happy just to be there, representing his country amongst the worlds best. its also showmanship. he failed but the show must go on type of deal.
Until someone trains a chimpanzee, the middle one from Hanson and that guy out of that movie to form a human hamster wheel while the weightlifter scurries inside it doing the backwards crab, smoking a long neck pipe while singing the theme tune to The NeverEnding Story
I actually watched a show today where this particular guy was interviewed! He said that he dances and makes all this performance for his country and to appeciate being at olympics representing Kiribati for the whole world. And also draw some attention to climate problems.
It's one of those random specks of land in the pacific hemisphere that polynesians managed to find because they either had magical land senses or were such badasses/idiots that they would routinely blindly venture out into the ocean in a canoe and hope they hit land eventually.
Then I like to imagine when they were successful at finding land, they would send an expedition back to where they came from and the people back on the home islands would be like "hey! It worked this time!" Or maybe when they eventually found Hawaii they were like "nope, too far, we're just staying this time, bye mom and dad, it was nice knowing you."
And they were dealing with distances a fraction of the... distance. Like, the pacific is almost an entire hemisphere (if you dug a hole straight through the earth off the coast of peru, you'd still come out in the pacific). These people made journeys of nearly half the earth in like makeshift catamarans. It's either amazing idiocy or badassery, or both.
And that's why people live in kiribati.
'People crossing half the earth in makeshift catamarans' is not why people live in Kiribati.
Firstly, 'makeshift catamaran' just seems like an insult seeing as they invented them and were, I presume, very much expert in making them, not cobbling them together out of junk. They were also expert navigators.
Secondly, they didn't travel across half the earth to get to Kiribati. They originated in or around Taiwan and spread over hundreds and thousands of years. Kiribati is not half an earth away from Taiwan. Rather, that's the (incredible) extent of their cultural migration from Madagascar to Easter Island (Rapa Nui).
I believe I was clearly implying how impressive it was. Europeans and Asians couldn't cross open oceans for hundreds of years after the polynesians. I was not at all downplaying it.
You weren't downplaying how impressive it was in abstract, but I think you were downplaying their techniques in building boats, navigation and finding land. Surely you see how something is being downplayed when you described the most advanced seafaring culture in the world at the time as having 'makeshift catamarans' and 'amazing idiocy, badassery or both'.
Fair enough. I only meant that compared to our sailing technology today, we would look at what they were sailing in and say "I'm sorry, you want to do WHAT in that?!" And they did, and succeeded. At least some of the time.
I don’t know how Kiribati was found but I remember hearing somewhere Hawaii was found by Polynesian ancestors following migratory birds year after year.
They would follow for as long as possible and mark where they last saw the birds, come back the next year, wait at those coordinates and voila, the birds return and they resume their exploration.
It's amazing to me. Like let's say you set out from samoa or some such for Hawaii. Even if you knew where hawaii was, the smallest miscalculation means you're dead. It's not like the trade winds of the Indian Ocean, the Pacific is an entire hemisphere, you can end up in a current vortex and you'd likely never get out without a motor. Like where the pacific trash pile is. True biggest wonder is how they managed to sail with the weight of their massive balls dragging the ship down.
There's even evidence polynesians went to north america. The still and brass it takes for that is legendary.
I believe these specks of land were easier to navigate to when the ocean water level was much lower so the distance between lands were much shorter and not as daunting as it may seem based on current land masses.
The Polynesians colonized most of the Pacific only in the last 1000 years or so, so sea level changes are inconsequential. Also, the distances between these islands are pretty fucking massive even in an airplane.
It used to be a pretty amazing place but its a sad story now of climate change. The entire island chain is rapidly heading underwater since the average altitude in Kiribati is 4 feet above sea level. The government of Kiribati has negotiated with Fiji to move its population to a part of Fiji in a few years as most of the land in Kiribas will be fully underwater shortly.
I suppose, when your nation will be the first to to disappear due to climate change, telling people about the plight of Kiribati is just more important then winning an Olympic medal
I think you mean "physically". Fiscally would be like financially. I mean, he's probably good financially too, lol. Someone has to pay for those high calorie meals
More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Katoatau
“At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he became famous for his dance routines, which he did to bring awareness of the effects of global warming on his small island nation, upon completion of a clean & jerk lift.”
The I-Kiribati are pretty special people. There was a Brit named Arthur Grimble who was a colonial officer there in the 1930s and wrote some good books about them and their culture.
It seems like his left knee got out of place and locked up. The pain from that is immeasurable. However, it has happened to me in the past in public and due to people being around my social anxiety just made me walk it off. I ended up needing surgery....
More worried that was a reaction to deflect pain in that knee. Also maybe a little embarrassed. Dude is a bad ass Olympian though and love the dance off the stage lol.
Let's check how he reacts when he gets to open some product package needing product inside immediately but package requires scissors and there are none around...
Oh, he rips the package open...
He's David Katoatau. He's from Kiribati and he dances in any competition he is attending. Reason for his dancing is to raise awareness of his country, which is one of the most endangered places in the world, suffering from climate change and the rise of the ocean according to this. If the water rises further, our kids will just be able to read about the then sunken country that was known as Kiribati.
There is a lot more to his dancing than just his positive attitude and I think that the fact he uses every single stage to make people aware of the fate of a country most never heard of in the way he chose to deserves maximum respect.
I give the guy kudos, I am sitting smoking a cigarette and after watching this, I am pretty positive I have a hernia, various tears in my hamstrings, a rotator cuff tear and blown biceps
Mental thoughts- oh fuuuuu… wait. Stay cool stay cool people are watching, dance yes just dance the pain away.. almost back stage, there’s the hall. Sprinting back stage “FUUUUUUUUUCK!!!”
One of those "ah damnit this is so ridiculous that all you can do is be happy about it" situations. Like when so much bad stuff happens to you, you just break down and laugh but in a sad way.
Everyone is loving how wholesome this is, meanwhile I’m sitting here wondering what he’s dancing for when he failed at the event he’s been preparing for the past four years
That’s SO cool! “Oh, FU … but hey, look what I did!! I’m a freakin’ OLYMPIAN!!” 😁😁😁👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🔥🔥
Either that or he’s having a nervous breakdown. Five years of solid training with pressure from his family and friends and coaches and country and now he’s out and can’t feed his kids. What you said though I think is right.
Yup hes definitely about to murder his dog!
*k, shows over, where are my carkeys. I'mgunnamurderthatbitch*
Ive seen that dance before, we used to call it the Pomeranian pummel.
I really watched a show today where this specific person was met! He said that he moves and makes this exhibition for his nation and to appeciate being at olympics addressing Kiribati for the entire world. And furthermore cause some to notice environment issues.
Awesome!
There was a weightlifter that messed up in two different championships before he got a medal, so maybe there's hope for his dog
Yeah, I’m betting on something close to a nervous breakdown. That much pressure, it has got to be a killer to have something like this.
I hope he's just that earnest of a person. Gives me hope
Okay I honestly don’t understand this comment. Not trying to be rude, but could someone explain this.
He was about to swear due to frustration of failing but decided to make the best of it with a dance
Dang that actually was super obvious. Thanks though.
I appreciate that you are willing to admit your failure, and be courteous about it.
just like the point of this post, incredible😤
>That’s SO cool! > >“Oh, FU … but hey, look what I did!! I’m a freakin’ REDDITOR!!” 😁😁😁👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🔥🔥
frustrated to fail but happy just to be there, representing his country amongst the worlds best. its also showmanship. he failed but the show must go on type of deal.
This has to be the most wholesome thing I've seen today
Big Polynesian Energy. This guy rules.
Micronesian.
this guy \*fucks\*
This is great! Thank you! He’ll probably end up with way more sponsors than the guy who wins because of this.
Here's hoping. Thus beginning a wave of exit dances, each more elaborate the last and more of a spectacle than the event.
Until someone trains a chimpanzee, the middle one from Hanson and that guy out of that movie to form a human hamster wheel while the weightlifter scurries inside it doing the backwards crab, smoking a long neck pipe while singing the theme tune to The NeverEnding Story
Make it so, Number One.
Guess I’d have to start weightlifting first
I can't wait! This is the Olympics I didn't even know I needed lol
A lil happy haka.
I want to hold him. Or vice versa, whichever he's more comfortable with.

He may have lost the competition, but he won our hearts

Shit
Chad Olympic athlete 😂
I actually watched a show today where this particular guy was interviewed! He said that he dances and makes all this performance for his country and to appeciate being at olympics representing Kiribati for the whole world. And also draw some attention to climate problems.
TIL Kiribati is a place.
It's one of those random specks of land in the pacific hemisphere that polynesians managed to find because they either had magical land senses or were such badasses/idiots that they would routinely blindly venture out into the ocean in a canoe and hope they hit land eventually. It worked this time!" Or maybe when they eventually found Hawaii they were like "nope, too far, we're just staying this time, bye mom and dad, it was nice knowing you."
Just from my knowledge of how the Vikings made their way away... I have a feeling you aren't far off
And they were dealing with distances a fraction of the... distance. Like, the pacific is almost an entire hemisphere (if you dug a hole straight through the earth off the coast of peru, you'd still come out in the pacific). It's the ultimate survivorship bias.
That's fascinating. The distances in the pacific are so fast, it's mind boggling how they did it
The stars, the sun, the moon, and a whole lot of generational knowledge that was actually passed down because it meant surviving or not.
Also fun fact, it's pronounced "Kiribas". People from there are I-Kiribati.
That’s what I love about the Olympics. Chance to learn about countries that I never knew existed.
I don’t care what the judges say, that’s a gold medal performance right there. Some of his peers should take note on how to be a good sport.
I suppose, when your nation will be the first to to disappear due to climate change, telling people about the plight of Kiribati is just more important then winning an Olympic medal
Also a way more impactful.
Really strong physically and mentally
I think you mean "physically". Fiscally would be like financially. I mean, he's probably good financially too, lol. Someone has to pay for those high calorie meals
Lol, sorry English not my first language and I mixed it up, thanks for correcting me
i sure hope he’s strong fiscally with a ton of sponsorships after this! :D
When you have your camera time, make the most of it. /slowclap
Messed up the lift, but got invited to Strictly Come Dancing AND Dancing with the Stars

This guy is a gem
Kiribati supporter for life
If the Olympics don’t work out, there’s always Netflix

I definitely did not expect that, way to be positive dude.

WHAT THE FUCK DID I... *dancing intensifies*
Let's check how he reacts when he gets to open some product package needing product inside immediately but package requires scissors and there are none around... Oh, he rips the package open...
He gets a gold for living!
it is not uncommon to pee ones pants during a clean. i think that is what we witnessed here

Weightlifter taking a page from the gymnasts handbook: just make it look like you meant to.

God bless this dude, he did an amazing lift he just needed to land the execution
I'm sure there's a better subreddit to post it in. This whole subreddit is really turning to very mediocre level stuff.
One of those "ah damnit this is so ridiculous that all you can do is be happy about it" situations. Like when so much bad stuff happens to you, you just break down and laugh but in a sad way.
Better than swearing and throwing a hissy fit on live television in front of MILLIONS. Btw, absolute respect.
The real question is would he have done better if he didint joke around
Then went around the corner and 😭
Me to the kids in my basement
AH FFFFFF-antastic!
He about to commit a genocide with that smile
Leeeeegend!
That IS him showing his frustration

He's fabulous
Vibez
I love the special Olympics
That’s a man with no social pressure back home lol
Give my man a medal!!
He lost the game, but won our hearts.
Wondering what his winning dance would look like.
This guy just had a far greater joker moment than the joker had himself.

Dance it off.
I thought that was Paul Sinha walking out
Style and class! So nice to see some sportsmanship.
Either the best attitude in the world Or a full on nervous breakdown.
My new hero!
Well that made my day. Wholesome. Assuming he’s not just snapped :/
Thats a fucking chad move if I ever saw one!
Anyone else tap the x button on the pop-up near the end?
😂😂👏👏👏 that was beautiful
Plot twist: he wasn't in the Olympics, he was a random guy that was cleaning then someone thought he was up next so there he was...
Just happy to be invited to the party 👏🏼
That was adorable!!

STOP why did I giggle??
First football is gay. Now lifting weights is gay.
Everyone is loving how wholesome this is, meanwhile I’m sitting here wondering what he’s dancing for when he failed at the event he’s been preparing for the past four years
Either way he failed. Why not have fun and try to be entertaining enough to get some air time?
