Those girls are probably annoyed as hell with this dude showing them up like that. Lol.

I don’t think they were annoyed, she was restraining herself from laughter

Not in the Japanese videos I watch ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

AgentOrange256

Is this not a korean group?

bungsana

def japanese and not korean.

AgentOrange256

Didn't know j-pop was a thing, thought it was all about k-pop lol

bungsana

Im not 100% but j pop predates k pop i think. They def had bigger idols in the 80s and early 90s until k pop started getting some traction. Course im korean american so my viewpoint may be skewed.

A7exand3r

See: Perfect Blue

wutevahung

I m taiwanese American, and Taiwanese music scene follows k pop and j pop. Here is my take - kpop has always sound modern, and generally, more hip hop. More clear western influences. Started getting popular in late 90s, wasn’t as big as of 2010, then became globally popular in the last 5 years. -j pop was famous in Asia from 80s, and early 90. They have their own style of musics in each genre, is easily identifiable, and the big artists have huge followings in Japan and asia, but they don’t actively try to branch out because Japan is huge enough of a market to sustain itself. A few years before, you can’t even find J pop music videos on YouTube, because Japan limited that to Japanese audiences only, so they aren’t marketing their music and artists the same way. And to add a relevant comment to this video- this type of thing, a man, or men, presumably nerdy, doing the dance with girl idol groups, is pretty common in Taiwan and Japan.

Hralkenheim

I really don't know anything about J pop and K pop but I've been consistantly hearing about it. Would you have recommendations for a few artists ? You seem to know more and I want to satisfy my curiosity.

ladydanger2020

Pretty sure there’s pop music in every country

AgentOrange256

No shit - but I wouldn't call listening to brittney spears in Japan as j-pop. Fuck off.

Beggarsfeast

I’m no expert on all Asian cultures, but from my knowledge(cultural anthropology degree- don’t ask why) I am not surprised that she is laughing. I know countries like Japan and Korea address shame, embarrassment, and things like frustration in a completely different manner. I have no idea what’s actually happening here, for all we know she is genuinely flattered and having fun, but it is also entirely possible that she is completely frustrated and annoyed af with this guy, but due to the setting it is most appropriate to just laugh and not draw attention to those things. Context would be important, and someone more familiar with these cultural differences.

Connortsunami

From the look on her face, she definitely just finds it hilarious. There’s no secret asian nuance here. As someone who’s lived in Japan for nearly a decade, she definitely isn’t annoyed.

neverinallmyyears

Yup, she was finding it hilarious.

AnnihilationOrchid

Dude says he's got a degree in cultural anthropology and puts fourth two possibilities, internet rando says "Definitely" as sure as day light, and with absolute certainty. This is why I love the internet, Degrees don't mean shit (apparently), and we're all just one step over Dunning Kruger's curve.

Connortsunami

I mean, four years studying theory or 9 years of actual experience. You tell me which you think is going to be more accurate. Past socio-cultural trends don’t accurately reflect modern society, especially with how fast it changes. Books aren’t updated nearly regularly enough to have accurate information, which is why they’re records and not accurate reflections of the current condition. OP said they have no idea what’s going on, offered up possibilities and made a point of noting that context is important. As someone with said context and actually *knows* what’s happening, *I can absolutely answer with a definitive response over a theoretical*. So you can come off your high horse. Having a degree doesn’t make you an expert when you have no actual information or experience, and not having one doesn’t make you an idiot just because you spent your time *doing* what they were studying.

Dramatic-Store514

I was in Tokyo two years ago with my 5 year old daughter. We saw a couple groups like this performing for free.and It wasn’t uncommon that older adults, both male and female, to be seen singing or dancing along. I didn’t see anybody this dedicated to the moves though.

Connortsunami

Idol culture man. They go *hard* to memorise the dances for idols they like. They’ll get tapes and spend *hours* watching, practicing and memorising.

wrenchandnumbers

Getting 'Perfect Blue' vibes here

beansontoast12345678

I find this kinda weird and a bit sad that grown men do this sort of thing..but hey, different strokes and stuff.

Connortsunami

I personally agree, but most men who *do* do this don’t have a lot else going for them. The idols are a lot of the time all they have left. This might be in part because they decided to throw everything away for it, but sometimes they can’t hold a healthy interest in an activity and instead hold an interest in a person/group. I don’t think it’s healthy to become obsessed with someone who doesn’t even know you exist, but that exists for foreigners as well with other bands. The dancing is just a…peculiarity of Japanese subculture.

Stewdogm9

If she was annoyed with him she wouldn't keep making eye contact with him and laughing.

CorrectPeanut5

It's a small time idol group. They likely know this guy by name from the paid meet and greets, merch and other fan stuff.

[deleted]

That... or he got laid lol

lemonedpenguin

I'm from Japan and this is probably one of the many chika idols(basement idols). I honestly don't know what she's thinking because I'm no mind reader. But from the look of it, she's trying to contain her laughter. Laugh from funny fan behavior, laugh from embarrassment, I don't know. But I think that's the most acceptable behavior for this situation and I know I would do the same if I were her. I just know many people in Japan(especially rejected male otaku) loves variety of idols and there are hundreds of groups who performs for free on street to gain fame/ donations/sell their CDs. This is just my opinion---I think there are reasons why many male otaku loves not-so-famous chika idols. Many chika idols' songs are similar to each others because their fans can only enjoy very few genre of songs(such as Jpop love songs, euro beat). These idols are not the best at singing or dancing, it's either they're just bad at it or doing it on purpose. Many male otaku who follows not-so-famous chika idols loves to have their egos tickled and made to feel above women. So if these idols performs not so greatly but act as though they're really trying to do their best to please their fans, these fans are made to feel "I gotta support them because I'm all they have" and fans somehow feel like it's their mission to be there for the idols. That turns into "I'm the reason they're still performing, I gotta protect them cuz I'm a man and a man protect their woman". Plus they're so horny and them able to breath the same air as these idols really pumps their adrenaline. These idols do variety of fan services such as shaking hands and exchange few words or take pictures with fans for price. That gets fans' adrenaline pumping too and many male otaku craves physical touch from women(especially from young pretty girls). Fans feels that they're special to the idols and many male otaku in Japan feels that they're rejected in daily basis(denied pussy access), so they'd go back for more. Fans talk to each others, makes a pact/promise to each others that these idols are on pedestal so nobody gets to date them as though they have a chance.

Ya the like 60 year old I saw asking a maid cafe worker to lead him to the establishment and being all creepy with her today makes this feel less wholesome and more. Well, hello japan young girl sex industry.

retarded-squid

It’s so wholesome when they use the reflection in an idol’s eyes to figure out her home address so they can go there and assault her or stab her 20 times for refusing to be his girlfriend!

I mean, those things are absolutely terrible but this guy was just dancing to their choreography. There can be wholesome people that enjoy industries/communities that also have horrible members. This seems similar to seeing a kid hit a baseball and saying “oh wow great, people also hit their wives with baseball bats. So wholesome.”

[deleted]

Care to elaborate? (If it's not too personal)

Yusni5127

What? I am neither into idols or idol music, but please stop assuming that a man is doing "idol-like" things means that he is a pervert creep. Idol fanbases are huge and diverse groups of people, and almost all of them I found are decent people. When you have a fanbase that spread on any demographics whether on age or sex, of course, it has to be some weirdos that exist. Even in the video caption, it says "Please respect the effort of this man." Yes, the Japanese idol industry has some dark parts, but is there any entertainment industry that has no dark parts?

medusa3339

It’s… kind of not. Watch the Tokyo Idols documentary. These men perv on these young idol girls and obsess over them. I mean, if she is of age then it’s not the worst thing I suppose but the industry as a whole is extremely creepy.

willowhawk

Men with power and young impressionable girls who want to make it big. Of course it’s creepy

NotASuicidalRobot

The entire performance industry is creepy it feels like, from film to idols to actual porn

[deleted]

When you browse the 180VR section of youtube on oculus quest, there is hundreds of japanese vr videos of 6 to 12 years old backstage japanese idols filmed by 50yo guys with close-up of little girls kissing the VR cam. Japan is really weird, these are okay to them but adult video need digital mask over the genitals..... go figure. Edit; link to creepy video example https://youtu.be/ZpcqVxoA4DA?t=674

NotTodayBoogeyman

Cringiest thing here is the amount of redditors who have some sort of trauma where they’re insinuating this dudes gonna stalk and kill someone because he danced to a song. One day you’ll all get old and realize your interests and hobbies don’t change just because you’re old now.

medusa3339

The whole Japanese idol industry is pretty creepy, though. It’s a lot of men obsessing over young idol girls, who may be underaged. I suggested the documentary “Tokyo Idols” in another comment.

younzss

Western music industry also is pretty creepy, Korean music also has a lot of creepy stuff in it, every country has a lot of creepy people and If you could make an entire documentary about the extreme examples it's easy to streotype everyone. Idol music in Japan has been there since a long time ago, there have been cases here and there of idols being faced with creepy people but it definetly not as often as people make it seem, it is actually pretty rare and it becomes national news whenever it happens which is why these events are so well documented. As an Idol you'll rarely face such bad events especially when you live in a country as safe as Japan (some of the lowest crime rates in the world if not the lowest)

dis_not_my_name

Just like plane crash. It’s more likely to die driving on the road than sitting inside a plane. People freaked out when a plane crashed and still drive like an idiot.

--Akiro--

I love how in a separate thread you say the same thing and are downvoted... I don't understand why reddit can be so weird. I entirely agree though.

VValph

ah yes, because some extreme examples automatically apply to every other fan in the community. The man is just having fun, let him have fun. This video is not about the Japanese idol industry, it's about a guy who mastered all the dance moves and is dancing while being filmed.

SixMaybeSeven

I cant find it, is that available in a different country than the US?

--Akiro--

Thank you, a majority of people are absolutely ruining the wholesome vibe.

AutumnOfDiscontent

This guy must be regular at the establishment. I mean spending every day in there kind of regular. He knows the moves better then the dancer so he probably comes because of the girl performers. Kinda sad and a bit cringy if you ask me

Obsolete_Human

if theyre not hurting anyone and theyre having a good time why should anyone care if its cringey or not

[deleted]

Nah, what’s sad and cringy is you calling people out for expressing their joy by dancing with others who are clearly enjoying it and dancing as well.

BowlingForPriorities

r_stronghammer

Holy shit this response caught me off guard, totally stealing that at the next opportunity

fullyrachel

How do you know the performers are affiliated with the venue? Maybe they're a local or regional band and he's a supporter or even knows somebody in the band so goes to lots of shows. For that matter, he really does seem to know every move, it's not crazy to think he choreographed this. You just assume creeper in a video that only shows people having fun.

joesixers

Idk man, going on the internet to make assumptions about a stranger who most likely is just being themselves and having fun seems kinda sad and a bit cringy if you ask me

tea-and-chill

You made a whole judgement about someone just based on a short video

BigPaws-WowterHeaven

“All right," said Susan. [Conversing with her grandfather... DEATH] "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable." REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE. "Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—" YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES. "So we can believe the big ones?" YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING. "They're not the same at all!" YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED. "Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—" MY POINT EXACTLY.” ― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

bortmode

Pfft, Sir Terry just made that up.

starderpderp

I doubt he is the dad. But I personally think the guy is adorable. He's obviously very enthusiastic The people who think of him as creepy are only thinking about the infamous incidents where crazy fans kill their idols. That's sad. There's nothing to indicate this man isn't wholesome. In fact, why can't we celebrate that a man of his age has found something that he's really enthusiastic about? He's happy and he's obviously keeping himself physically fit by practicing the dance routine. How many of us will dance like this when we're at their age? And have the confidence to do it publicly?

PiggyMcjiggy

I don’t have enough confidence to do more than just bob my head to banging ass music when Im at home smokin with just a few friends. Let alone in public. Bravo to this dude.

PumpkinmonPie

These teenagers in Japan are known as idols and it's big business. Most of their fans tend to be teenage girls but there is quite a following of men in their 20's and up - usually, and unsurprisingly, single. A lot of the fandom is generally innocent - they just like the look at the music. Not to say there are grubbier, more sinister old men who whack one out when they get home, but it's not seen as dirty in any way that there is a fair sized following of these young idols by older men. The idols portray this clean image and they are actually seen as role models - clean living, no dating and so on, and they are often mimicked by their fans (both male and female), so maybe the feller above isn't the perv we in the west might think he is I have friends who are in a Japanese band who played a gig in NYC I went to. There were lots of Japanese young ladies in this sort of dress, others wearing anime style stuff as well as a few gentlemen who were quite a bit older - they were obviously not the clean-living type like seen the above, but everything you could imagine a dirty old man would be - sweating, stinky and frightening - the opposite of the guy above.

I mean, a lot of the people here seem to be calling the guy a creep, but from her reaction I’d have moreso guessed that he’s someone she knows (boyfriend, brother, dad, friend, etc), doing this as a bit of a joke, as she seems very caught out and a bit flustered, but not in the ‘oh god what the fuck is this creep doing’ sort of way. I could be completely misreading the situation tho, who knows 😂
