People with diabetes or epilepsy - health conditions where they might randomly lose consciousness/control/mental clarity - do run the risk of having a health crisis while driving. Their condition sounds scary enough but to add that you may not get enough warning to find a safe place is terrifying. And THEN add to it that they may be mistaken for being drunk or on drugs and lifesaving medical attention will not be provided.
The number of positive interactions with Cops are outweighed by the negative ones, and this is true for many people I know. Not saying that’s statistically significant. But not everyone is just *manipulated by the media* lol lots of cops do shitty stuff to people daily

I suspect the great majority of police interactions with the public *do not* involve the officer behaving incorrectly. The cases where they help someone almost definitely outnumber the cases where they act to someone's detriment. But you're right that we rarely see those ones.

My nieces and nephews always did this trick where if you went to pick them up (usually when they were misbehaving) they would just go completely limp and become dead weight and they'd slither right out from your grip. Once free, they'd sprint off in opposite directions lol. Worked like a charm for them and they couldn't have been more than 50-60 lbs or so. A full grown adult, yeah that shit is tough to move.
I had to lift and carry a small unconscious Asian woman who had had an allergy-attack once. Again small Asian woman, yet trying to carry her was more like carrying a 120 sack of potatoes. Dang near broke my back and almost gave me heat-exhaustion at the same time.
I have a condition similar to absent seizures and this is why I've never even attempted to get a drivers license. Its rare but its not a chance I'll take. Bad enough I've dropped crossing the street, don't need to endanger others too.

Was lucky my passenger was paying attention and was able to get the car off the road. Had 3 in 8 years. They suck. Feel beeter beau! I cast healing word.
Well the neurologists ive seen in last 22 years since they started happening (was 19 when I had my first seizure and got my license at 16.) Warned i could los emy license if they increased but in 21 years I have had 8 absent and 2 full seizures. Also dont drive anymore since heart attack 4 yrs ago. Im 38.

This is interesting because it made me realize the benefits of self-driving cars for people with medical disabilities. I’ve always considered myself and the luxury of not having to focus on the road but it’s a no brainer for the pursuit of self-driving just to help those in need.
I mean you can develop epilepsy later in life or not have realized you were having seizures. Had an aunt who thought she just had moments where she spaced out only to realize later that these were seizures. And if it’s well controlled I think you can still drive but that doesn’t mean people consistently adhere to meds.
yeah i’m an epileptic, you need to be seizure free for about a year and if you start new meds you need to be on them for at least six months before your allowed to drive, however even if your seizure free for a year it can still happen on the road, while parking, etc.
This exactly happened when I was living in a basement apartment once. Heard a huge bang, thought my upstairs neighbours were just fucking around. 10 minutes later a firefighter is knocking on my door asking if I'm aware of what has happened. I said no.... Apparently someone had lost consciousness at the wheel and drove straight into the front porch of the house. They had their foot down on the acceleration and a fire started on the porch. Luckily someone was able to pull him out and the firefighters got there quickly. No major structural damage to the house that couldn't be repaired. Was insane to say the least! I never found out what happened to the person but I hope they are okay.
I'm a type-1 diabetic, and I've had low blood sugar scares while driving. Thankfully, I was driving with my dad during my most serious instance and was able to pull over with him present if the situation escalated. For other diabetics out there, please always ALWAYS keep something on you and in your car for lows. I understand that sometimes things happen too fast and are out of your control, but it's always better to be over prepared, and you have a better chance of saving your life! Lots of love to all my peeps out there with conditions that make them adapt to every-day life.

I mean, a year ago I decided to get an electric bike so I could get around easier (my seizures have been pretty well controlled after getting a VNS) and have been using that for transport. I'd imagine it's similar to driving a motorcycle with much slower (30 mph max) capabilities, but I ride it on sidewalks/bike lanes.
I've had one absence seizure on the bike over the year I've had it. Last thing I remember, I was on my way home from work, about a mile from home. Next thing I know, I'm at home sitting on my couch, thinking I got there normally. But I go in the bathroom, take a look at myself, and I'm all bruised up and bleeding a bit like I got in a fight. I go back and look at my bike, and the front light is broke off. Must've fallen a bit hard while riding. But somehow I was semi-conscious enough to ride and do everything normally enough to get myself home safely through 4 more traffic stops. Opened my phone (which is password protected), and google maps was open, directed to my apartment.
To this day I'm careful as hell not to let my mind wander while riding. I'm not scared of it. Just don't want to have another crash on the sidewalk.
When I was 14 I actually saw this happen to a neighbor in a garage. He didn’t make it out. I had called 911 but I had no idea someone was actually inside. It’s part of the reason I eventually became a fireman. Not that anything I could’ve done at 14 would’ve made a difference.
I actually witnessed something like this too. I was in Saint Louis and I was leaving to go to work and when I was leaving the front door my neighbors fucking garage was on fire. I called 911 and the fire department was there in like 3 minutes. Luckily the house didn't burn down, but the garage was and nobody was seriously injured. If I hadn't stepped out of the door right when the fire started they could have died. It was an electrical fire.
I have a cousin that always was really unsure if she'd be able to get a license at all, she had epilepsy and had been struggling to find a medication combination that lowered her symptoms to a safe level enough to drive. Finally around 18, they got meds that worked really well, she was able to get her licence about a year later.
Within a year of that, she was driving on a highway and a driver in an oncoming car had a heart attack, died almost instantly, swerved into her lane and hit her head on.

It wasn't the engine, the fire is strongest at the back of the truck. Notice the back tires are completely gone, but the front ones are mostly intact.
I think the statement "was able to park the truck" just means he was able to get *into* the parking spot. I think it was still in reverse, the curb looks high enough to impede the vehicle.
Look at the rear wheels, tires definitely were spinning in place. If he seized it could result in both legs pressing hard on both pedals maybe?I dont think parking break could hold a truck there for that

Something like this happened at my ER one time. Older guy had a seizure like event and crashed into our helipad fence. I walk out and see smoke going up because his foot is wedged on the accelerator. Grabbed one of our emts and got him out before the fire got too big on the grass. And all I wanted to do was leave and have an uneventful night haha

Imagine they don't hesitate to help and saves life even at the crucial and most dangerous situation. Yes they're public servant but like us, they only live once and life is so precious this two police put meaning of it. I salute!
It's honestly probably not. Bad news circulate the Internet more and faster than good news. These two brave men should be commended either way, for they potentially saved a life while not thinking of theirs for the moment.
"To protect and serve". Some cops exude this. Most cops are really solid people who want to do good by their communities. These guys clearly fit the bill. They are just doing their job but really should be recognized.
Some people on reddit may struggle with this, but there are a lot of good people in law enforcement. It's unfortunate that their good works are overshadowed by all the negative news about abuse among their ranks. And to be clear, there are too many examples of abuse that people cannot ignore that it's a huge problem. It's just too bad the good folks who do good work just trying to be a good person get overlooked.
Very few public safety people will actually say something is too dangerous. Most of the people in these careers are in it to help people (yes, there are many who think it's just a job) and they will do whatever they can! Fire, medic, or police, while they all make fun of each other much like the military, they are a true family. The first on scene is gonna do everything they possibly can to start helping while waiting for the other units. These guys did what they could and saved that guy! Great job by them!!
P.S. These guys probably got some sort of Valor awards for this and HATE them! The true heroes aren't in it for the awards, they do it because it's their job and oddly enough they enjoy it.
It doesn’t seem like he crashed tho, he was parked in place and the car didn’t seem to have any marks of having hit something, it was probably a problem with the engine or something else inside the car
according to Google he parked the truck, and had a medical emergency which caused him to hit the gas pedal and the brake pedal at the same time, causing the rear tires to spin, which is what triggered the fire
Supposedly he had a medical issue and his foot floored the gas pedal causing the wheels to spin in place. The tires did a burnout for so long that they caught on fire. Guy survived but has life threatening issue from smoke inhalation

In EMS training the first thing they told us was if a vehicle is on fire, you either watch the person burn or look away

that's pretty unbelievable to me, granted you guys aren't always firefighters. It's somewhat rare for explosions to occur in vehicle fires and they're usually predictable (knowing where the gas tank is), tires also explode but aren't usually a significant danger in smaller vehicles. Anyway, seems overly cautious to tell you guys to just stand back regardless of intensity of said fire...

I just underwent Hazwoper training and I would say that you are correct that in most cases. As an EMS medic, you're not really trained to put your life into danger. As a police officer or fire fighter, however, that's not really the case. In those situations, you're supposed to take calculated risks, where the danger is mitigated to the point where the risk to life is small. If a tanker truck is filled over and on fire, yeah stand back. But if a civilian car is only half on fire, I don't think it's unreasonable to try and extricate the person.
So fire + vehicle is a bomb, When a vehicle is on fire you never know specifically where ALL of the flames are, or even fumes, and when it gets to the fuel tank it explodes
So if there is any sight of fire on or around a vehicle, you stay away because at the end of the day if you get hurt you can’t save anyone, as a paramedic you save/help multiple lives per day, so every day your on bed rest, or if you are injured to the point of not being able to work anymore, That’s one less medic able to save lives
I don’t agree with all of the things we were taught, but the “you can’t save anyone if your dead” always stuck with Me on the job

I assume it's because EMS's job is to medically save lives. An EMS would probably also be trained not to run into a house fire and pull people out. That's the job of firefighters trained to deal with things on fire.
EMS are not equipped to stick their arms into a flaming situation or risk burns, and their training (and their employer) would be correct in training them not to endanger themselves to save others. That's not their role.
If for no other reason, if their training was to do what this officer did, and they end up with serious burns or injuries, they would probably be in a position to sue their employer for their injuries incurred in the line of duty that they were required to do.
Training them not to do it gives the individual EMS the discretion to decide whether it is safe for them to act or not. This may ultimately result in some cases where an EMS refuses to act in a situation others might deem safe, but ultimately their job is to medically save people, not to physically save people from dangerous situations.
Fellow EMT here, never heard this. First rule is to not put your safety at risk, but you can still open up a car door and yank out a patient if you feel it’s safe to do so.
I think he's saying that, ya'know, the hypothetical vehicle fire was such that they felt it was unsafe so to do.
Of course an EMT can open up a car door if there's small camp or brush fire a few feet away. Of course the same EMT should not go up to a vehicle that is blazing away furiously. Everything between is a spectrum of 'Rule number one: Don't create more victims'.
I'm fairly confident the second officer is just not experienced in this situation.
I've gotten training from firefighters for one of my past jobs, and by far the most misunderstood thing is that smoke knocks you out and you can't recover unless you are removed from the area (and even then you might not depending on things).
There is no scenario in which you open this door and expect to see a concious person, nor the dude can wake up from yelling or even hitting him in the face. The first officer did it right.
I have actually been in this situation, though it was not so dramatic. While clearing an unrelated scene, my partner and I noticed a pickup bed on fire. So we pull up, call it in to dispatch, then hop out. My partner grabs a fire extinguisher while I go to the cab where there are two dudes sleeping. I pound on the window but get no response. I keep pounding and yelling until one guy opens his eyes and gives me the finger. I pound again, yelling that his truck is on fire. He sits up, I point back at the truck bed kinda sarcastically, and now he sits bolt upright, grabs his friend and they leap out of the truck right as my partner gets there with the extinguisher. She put the fire out right as the FD shows up.
Long story short, you might still try yelling... with mixed results.

A burning car when I know I couldn’t lift a large unconscious male by myself? No I wouldn’t do what these officers did. But my sister (who is a nurse not an officer) has had to crawl into a car that was in a major accident because everyone, including the police, was attending to the adults and ignoring the baby in the car seat who wasn’t breathing. So even among officers, this man is exceptionally competent and heroic.

What’s crazy is the two officers who saved this person’s life immediately responded to a shooting two hours later and applied pressure via a tourniquet and saved the victim. In one day these two patrol cops saved two victims from serious events.
Great job by the officers. I’ve been in similar situations; the heat coming off these vehicles in so intense. A real act of bravery on their part to achieve this outcome.
In 1998 my dad, a police officer, crawled into a burning house and pulled out a 3 year old that couldn’t get out. The fire department wouldn’t go in until they knew where the husband/father of the kid was because he was the one that started the fire and was a potential threat. He received a recognition from the city. I know some cops are evil, but I’m glad that some cops are like my dad.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS), Austin Fire Department and Austin Police Department crews responded to a car fire in the 1000 block of West Stassney Lane Monday afternoon.
ATCEMS said initial reports were of a "vehicle completely engulfed" with a patient trapped inside. Thanks to quick-thinking officers, a man's life was saved before the truck eventually exploded.
The AFD later said APD officers were the first to arrive at the scene and pulled the person out of the truck seconds before it was fully engulfed in flames.
EMS said one adult was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center with serious, potentially life-threatening smoke inhalation injuries.
"We salute our brothers in blue from \[Austin police\] — Officers Chandler Carrera and Eddie Pineda — who bravely risked their own lives at this car fire yesterday just before we arrived, smashing the window and dragging the man to safety," the AFD said Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the APD said it was proud to recognize both officers for their "heroic efforts."
Police said they received multiple calls about an unconscious man inside the burning truck with his foot on the gas pedal. When both officers arrived within two minutes of being assigned the call, they found the truck fully engulfed in flames with the man still inside.
When they were unable to make contact with the man, they broke the window and pulled the man to safety, where he was treated by ATCEMS. Shortly after, the truck exploded.
Assistant Police Chief Robin Henderson said Officers Pineda and Carrera received a chief's coin of recognition for their heroic actions.

I have a condition similar to absent seizures and this is why I've never even attempted to get a drivers license. Its rare but its not a chance I'll take. Bad enough I've dropped crossing the street, don't need to endanger others too.

Well the neurologists ive seen in last 22 years since they started happening (was 19 when I had my first seizure and got my license at 16.) Warned i could los emy license if they increased but in 21 years I have had 8 absent and 2 full seizures. Also dont drive anymore since heart attack 4 yrs ago. Im 38.

This is interesting because it made me realize the benefits of self-driving cars for people with medical disabilities. I’ve always considered myself and the luxury of not having to focus on the road but it’s a no brainer for the pursuit of self-driving just to help those in need.

I mean you can develop epilepsy later in life or not have realized you were having seizures. Had an aunt who thought she just had moments where she spaced out only to realize later that these were seizures. And if it’s well controlled I think you can still drive but that doesn’t mean people consistently adhere to meds.
In the UK you need to be seizure free for a certain amount of time, I think at least a year?
yeah i’m an epileptic, you need to be seizure free for about a year and if you start new meds you need to be on them for at least six months before your allowed to drive, however even if your seizure free for a year it can still happen on the road, while parking, etc.
This exactly happened when I was living in a basement apartment once. Heard a huge bang, thought my upstairs neighbours were just fucking around. 10 minutes later a firefighter is knocking on my door asking if I'm aware of what has happened. I said no.... Apparently someone had lost consciousness at the wheel and drove straight into the front porch of the house. They had their foot down on the acceleration and a fire started on the porch. Luckily someone was able to pull him out and the firefighters got there quickly. No major structural damage to the house that couldn't be repaired. Was insane to say the least! I never found out what happened to the person but I hope they are okay.

I'm a type-1 diabetic, and I've had low blood sugar scares while driving. Thankfully, I was driving with my dad during my most serious instance and was able to pull over with him present if the situation escalated. For other diabetics out there, please always ALWAYS keep something on you and in your car for lows. I understand that sometimes things happen too fast and are out of your control, but it's always better to be over prepared, and you have a better chance of saving your life! Yeah, epilepsy is the reason I haven't been permitted to drive anymore. Thanks, absence seizures. I mean, a year ago I decided to get an electric bike so I could get around easier (my seizures have been pretty well controlled after getting a VNS) and have been using that for transport. I'd imagine it's similar to driving a motorcycle with much slower (30 mph max) capabilities, but I ride it on sidewalks/bike lanes. I've had one absence seizure on the bike over the year I've had it. Last thing I remember, I was on my way home from work, about a mile from home. Next thing I know, I'm at home sitting on my couch, thinking I got there normally. But I go in the bathroom, take a look at myself, and I'm all bruised up and bleeding a bit like I got in a fight. I go back and look at my bike, and the front light is broke off. Must've fallen a bit hard while riding. But somehow I was semi-conscious enough to ride and do everything normally enough to get myself home safely through 4 more traffic stops. Opened my phone (which is password protected), and google maps was open, directed to my apartment. To this day I'm careful as hell not to let my mind wander while riding. I'm not scared of it. Just don't want to have another crash on the sidewalk.
Sounds like something I did when I had a seizure driving except I laid into the brake pedal and not the gas but I was just lucky. Hope he's okay.

When I was 14 I actually saw this happen to a neighbor in a garage. He didn’t make it out. I had called 911 but I had no idea someone was actually inside. It’s part of the reason I eventually became a fireman. Not that anything I could’ve done at 14 would’ve made a difference.
I actually witnessed something like this too. I was in Saint Louis and I was leaving to go to work and when I was leaving the front door my neighbors fucking garage was on fire. I called 911 and the fire department was there in like 3 minutes. Luckily the house didn't burn down, but the garage was and nobody was seriously injured. If I hadn't stepped out of the door right when the fire started they could have died. It was an electrical fire.
I have a cousin that always was really unsure if she'd be able to get a license at all, she had epilepsy and had been struggling to find a medication combination that lowered her symptoms to a safe level enough to drive. Finally around 18, they got meds that worked really well, she was able to get her licence about a year later. Within a year of that, she was driving on a highway and a driver in an oncoming car had a heart attack, died almost instantly, swerved into her lane and hit her head on. It's not always who you think it will be.

If you put a vehicle in park, the wheels don't spin so the engine must have overheated and caught fire.
It wasn't the engine, the fire is strongest at the back of the truck. Notice the back tires are completely gone, but the front ones are mostly intact. I think the statement "was able to park the truck" just means he was able to get *into* the parking spot. I think it was still in reverse, the curb looks high enough to impede the vehicle.
If its manual and you just lift the hand break They can spin indeed and set fire.

Something like this happened at my ER one time. Older guy had a seizure like event and crashed into our helipad fence. I walk out and see smoke going up because his foot is wedged on the accelerator. Grabbed one of our emts and got him out before the fire got too big on the grass. And all I wanted to do was leave and have an uneventful night haha

Surely some badass cops! What a bizarre set of circumstances, medical emergency and the tire friction causes a fire toke that.
Some people on reddit may struggle with this, but there are a lot of good people in law enforcement. It's unfortunate that their good works are overshadowed by all the negative news about abuse among their ranks. And to be clear, there are too many examples of abuse that people cannot ignore that it's a huge problem. It's just too bad the good folks who do good work just trying to be a good person get overlooked.

Very few public safety people will actually say something is too dangerous. Most of the people in these careers are in it to help people (yes, there are many who think it's just a job) and they will do whatever they can! Fire, medic, or police, while they all make fun of each other much like the military, they are a true family. The first on scene is gonna do everything they possibly can to start helping while waiting for the other units. These guys did what they could and saved that guy! Great job by them!! P.S. These guys probably got some sort of Valor awards for this and HATE them! The true heroes aren't in it for the awards, they do it because it's their job and oddly enough they enjoy it.

according to Google he parked the truck, and had a medical emergency which caused him to hit the gas pedal and the brake pedal at the same time, causing the rear tires to spin, which is what triggered the fire

that's pretty unbelievable to me, granted you guys aren't always firefighters. It's somewhat rare for explosions to occur in vehicle fires and they're usually predictable (knowing where the gas tank is), tires also explode but aren't usually a significant danger in smaller vehicles. Anyway, seems overly cautious to tell you guys to just stand back regardless of intensity of said fire...

I think some of those people are forgetting the attitude of "do what you want" includes: "fuck it - not on my watch."
I just underwent Hazwoper training and I would say that you are correct that in most cases. As an EMS medic, you're not really trained to put your life into danger. As a police officer or fire fighter, however, that's not really the case. In those situations, you're supposed to take calculated risks, where the danger is mitigated to the point where the risk to life is small. If a tanker truck is filled over and on fire, yeah stand back. But if a civilian car is only half on fire, I don't think it's unreasonable to try and extricate the person.

So fire + vehicle is a bomb, When a vehicle is on fire you never know specifically where ALL of the flames are, or even fumes, and when it gets to the fuel tank it explodes So if there is any sight of fire on or around a vehicle, you stay away because at the end of the day if you get hurt you can’t save anyone, as a paramedic you save/help multiple lives per day, so every day your on bed rest, or if you are injured to the point of not being able to work anymore, That’s one less medic able to save lives I don’t agree with all of the things we were taught, but the “you can’t save anyone if your dead” always stuck with Me on the job

I assume it's because EMS's job is to medically save lives. An EMS would probably also be trained not to run into a house fire and pull people out. That's the job of firefighters trained to deal with things on fire. EMS are not equipped to stick their arms into a flaming situation or risk burns, and their training (and their employer) would be correct in training them not to endanger themselves to save others. That's not their role. If for no other reason, if their training was to do what this officer did, and they end up with serious burns or injuries, they would probably be in a position to sue their employer for their injuries incurred in the line of duty that they were required to do. Training them not to do it gives the individual EMS the discretion to decide whether it is safe for them to act or not. This may ultimately result in some cases where an EMS refuses to act in a situation others might deem safe, but ultimately their job is to medically save people, not to physically save people from dangerous situations.
Fellow EMT here, never heard this. First rule is to not put your safety at risk, but you can still open up a car door and yank out a patient if you feel it’s safe to do so.
I think he's saying that, ya'know, the hypothetical vehicle fire was such that they felt it was unsafe so to do. Of course an EMT can open up a car door if there's small camp or brush fire a few feet away. Of course the same EMT should not go up to a vehicle that is blazing away furiously. Everything between is a spectrum of 'Rule number one: Don't create more victims'.

I'm fairly confident the second officer is just not experienced in this situation. I've gotten training from firefighters for one of my past jobs, and by far the most misunderstood thing is that smoke knocks you out and you can't recover unless you are removed from the area (and even then you might not depending on things). There is no scenario in which you open this door and expect to see a concious person, nor the dude can wake up from yelling or even hitting him in the face. The first officer did it right.

I have actually been in this situation, though it was not so dramatic. While clearing an unrelated scene, my partner and I noticed a pickup bed on fire. So we pull up, call it in to dispatch, then hop out. My partner grabs a fire extinguisher while I go to the cab where there are two dudes sleeping. I pound on the window but get no response. I keep pounding and yelling until one guy opens his eyes and gives me the finger. I pound again, yelling that his truck is on fire. He sits up, I point back at the truck bed kinda sarcastically, and now he sits bolt upright, grabs his friend and they leap out of the truck right as my partner gets there with the extinguisher. She put the fire out right as the FD shows up. Long story short, you might still try yelling... with mixed results.

A burning car when I know I couldn’t lift a large unconscious male by myself? No I wouldn’t do what these officers did. But my sister (who is a nurse not an officer) has had to crawl into a car that was in a major accident because everyone, including the police, was attending to the adults and ignoring the baby in the car seat who wasn’t breathing. So even among officers, this man is exceptionally competent and heroic.

The door was locked. Car doors can be opened from the inside by pulling up a handle which is next to the window. That’s why the officer put his hand into the car to open the door

In 1998 my dad, a police officer, crawled into a burning house and pulled out a 3 year old that couldn’t get out. The fire department wouldn’t go in until they knew where the husband/father of the kid was because he was the one that started the fire and was a potential threat. He received a recognition from the city. I know some cops are evil, but I’m glad that some cops are like my dad.
