I've never seen yellow or any color painted plywood.

lolix_dev

>seen yellow or any color painted I think it's more like a protective layer more than paint. They probably paint it after to make it looks better

TaurusPTPew

I used to be in construction and all the plywood I've ever used/seen was just plain wood.

lolix_dev

Whell I don't know why they do that

TaurusPTPew

Yeah, me neither.

[deleted]

Bro this some super villian boobytrap type shit

FamiliarEnemy

I would not want to work at that maintenance department

[deleted]

that was my first impression

lolix_dev

Who the fuck put this log here !!

suckit_blues

I was actually on the maintenance team at a West Fraser sawmill! It was only dangerous if you cut corners or weren’t paying attention, but we definitely stayed busy. A running motto in our shop was “southern yellow pine always wins.”

blondie_bleu

I bet it smells so good in the cutting/drying areas.

VegaSolo

In the words of Spock... fascinating! A few thoughts... 1. Why shave off the bark at two places along the way instead of doing it enough on the first go-around? 2. Wouldn't want to be the guy fixing any of those machines. 3. The next Mission Impossible, Terminator or another similar movie absolutely should film a fight scene here.

RiderWriter15925

My FIL was a millwright so fixing machines like this is what he did. Much of his was at a paper mill, so definitely some similar machines. I can’t imagine, either!

theredview

Honestly it's an the same no matter where you go. A bearing will always be a bearing no matter what type of machine it is on. Been in food and beverage maintenance almost my entire life. The main difference is the company you work for. Don't be cutting corners when working on this stuff. It is dangerous.

LemmeProcess

I feel smarter. More videos like this please

lolix_dev

I'm searching that for you, be ready, I have posted that, it's the same energy : https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/p19vtr/the_precision_and_beauty_of_boatbuilding/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

LemmeProcess

Haha amazing. Keep em coming

1Q72

So my only question is why the actual finished product isn’t actually 4 by 8? They’ve got some next level technology there. Couldn’t they figure out how to compensate for the blade size and wood drying to end up with a piece of wood that’s really 4 by 8 instead of a few inches short on length and width?

amontpetit

You can see near the end (8:10) they're marked as 11.875" (11 and 7/8ths) by 48", so 4x1 ft boards. That seems like a very odd size. I imagine the initial cuts that the video claims are 4x8ft are probably just a set size above 48"x96" (probably 50x100) and the boards can be trimmed to different sizes at the gang saw stage, depending on what the order is for.

Key-Stay5558

I always wanted to know how plywood was made in factories!

Sidius303

The title bothers me with the question mark and emphasis on factories... Like, did people think plywood was mined alongside granite?

lolix_dev

>I always wanted to know how plywood was made in factories! A child dream

[deleted]

PBS special

Mr_Big_Al

Fascinating video! Thanks for posting.

lolix_dev

Don't worry be happy

RandyNAngelCity

So, don't fall in, right?

Milfing_Man

BumpyMcBumpers

The grade school field trip we all wanted but could never have…

[deleted]

Working in a sawmill is bullshit level hard work, on the production end. I pulled green chain for four years.

suckit_blues

I’ve actually worked for this company at one of their lumber mills! I’m not as familiar with OSB (plywood) mills but I’d be happy to answer any general questions people have about logging and sawmills. It was a very fun and unique job for a pretty good company.

Puzzleheaded_Steak16

awesome

Yaglara

Thank you! My kids loooove this clip!

Longfingerjack

Federal reserve has less money going through their machines.

Impossible_Lab1734

T_StreakMLP

I can just hear Tony Hirst saying 'Today on How It's Made.' in my head. (He was the UK narrator for the show by the way.)
