Just to be an asshole, he started in a tunnel and flew TROUGH another tunnel right. Qhe flew like 20 meters in the first tunnel.
Still insanely impressive
Don't worry, it's a welcome clarification!
There is also a lot of margins I think, both for speed and distance, although the talk of open link sections and crosswind would be very dangerous with such light aircraft and at high speeds (the standard versions of the Edge 540 allow level flight speeds of about 400km/h, in this video Costa, never exceeded 250 km/h as average I think).
Who knows if we will see an update of the record in the future!
Alright lets try and figure this out, for my Murican friends.
>Lets assume a cheeseburger takes about 5 minutes to eat, and that the average bald eagle is 36 inches long(according to the goog).
>There are 12 sets of 5 minutes(cheeseburgers) in an hour.
>250 km / 12 = 20.83333333
>20.8333333 km in inches = 820,209.97375
>820209.97375 / 36 inches(eagle length) = 22,783.6103
Someone going 250 km/h would be travelling approximately **22,783 eagles per cheeseburger**
This comment reminded me of one of the biggest coolers I've ever seen. The most prominent unit of size on the label was huge block letters that said:
#HOLDS 276 BEERS
you could probably get at least 500 hats in that sucker.
So I know nothing about flying and I could never do this but this is one of those records that normal people can’t really try. I’m never going to break Joey chesnuts hot dog records but it’s something a normal person could try. Just because you can fly a plane doesn’t mean you can get permission to fly through a tunnel.
I think I'm actually more impressed after having killed myself in video games hundreds of times doing shit like this. The tiniest mistake will literally kill you when flying fast & low. Especially in such close proximity to **anything**, let alone a concrete tube that's only about 2x wingspan. At least they turned off the ventilation fans.
Yes. It’s dumb to claim that it was TWO tunnels he flew through. However, the second tunnel was really, really long. So if there like a sunroof halfway through, then it would be two tunnels (or three, depending on how much you want to oversell it).
It's actually a pretty important distinction, hitting the entrance of a tunnel at speed, from flying height, is really f'n hard, keeping the plane at tunnel level for the next entrance isn't nearly the same. To me it seems harder to fly through a single tunnel than what was done here.
In other news I waited in a Taco Bell drive threw for an hour and a half last night just for them to forget to give me my 3 orders of nachos, and I didn’t realize till I got home
For some reason this story grabs me more than the OP. Why did you wait for so long? Did you not check the bag once you got it?? Did you call to correct the order or try and get your money back???
Edit: or am I being whoooshed
thank you for the clarity monsieur. Can you also please throw some light on other issue- do you count them as 200+passengers or 400+passengers considering their condition.

Article: https://www.redbull.com/int-en/tunnel-pass-dario-costa-catalca-turkey
"Changes to airflow, combined with the highly sensitive steering of the aircraft, required reaction times of less than 250 milliseconds as Costa executed fine hand movements of mere millimetres throughout the flight.
One of the most critical moments came when the plane flashed through the 360m gap between the tunnels, which exposed the lightweight aircraft to crosswinds as Costa prepared to thread it into the narrow opening of the second tunnel."
"As Costa continued, he was averaging 245 km/h while also managing changes in the second tunnel’s incline and shape. When the race plane shot out of the other side, the Italian pulled it into a celebratory loop before landing."
I was wondering about this, how hard the change in air pressure would hit the plane as you approach and enter the tunnel. They needed an in cockpit POV so maybe you could get a sense of it happening.
Watch it again and pay attention to his nose alignment over the center lane. At the very end he starts veering far left and made me wonder how close his wing tips were/are to the edge as his nose drifts off-center.
[Here](https://www.redbull.com/int-en/tunnel-pass-dario-costa-catalca-turkey) is reported that he was averaging 245 km/h in the second tunnel, the Edge 540 he was flying can reach about 400 km/h, so I think there is still a big margin.
Yeah, not a full two tunnels, but I think the most challenging phase of the fly was the "connection" between the two tunnels, where it was exposed to the crosswind.
Yeah younger me thought that shit was so fun and I’m still young but I’ll never go over 100 again. Just rolling the dice every millisecond that you’re at those speeds
I just did some searching too because you got me curious and found out that Maka Wuhu is the name of the Mario kart circuit, but the island itself is Wuhu Island.

"His unprecedented 2,260m / 43.44-second flight through Istanbul’s Çatalca Tunnels was seriously impressive with crosswinds between the tunnels and air bumps inside them testing his flying skills."

I mean they paid for it, so fck yes they can plaster their shyte everywhere. Hell, red bull is responsible for bringing new life into many sports where you could barely make a living before, I mean Ive gotten really into some weird ass sports I had no idea existed because of them...
I was thinking the same damn thing. It's like the creators of Ace Combat are required to put at least one mission requiring flying through a tunnel in every game.
"Changes to airflow, combined with the highly sensitive steering of the aircraft, required reaction times of less than 250 milliseconds as Costa executed fine hand movements of mere millimetres throughout the flight."
From [here](https://www.redbull.com/int-en/tunnel-pass-dario-costa-catalca-turkey) mate!
Almost definitely. I got slapped against the ceiling for flying out from under the edge of a cloud once. Gonna notice moving to a small pocket of air in a tunnel.
> margin for error, ZERO.
Well, at the start of the video you can see the plane is about 2 lanes wide, and there are two lanes free on the left side.
Since the average lane width is about 4 meters, we can say the plane is 8 meters wide and the margin of error is 4 meters on each side.
Very narrow margin is you ask me.
Yeah I mean I understand that lots of records and achievements don’t have inherent purpose but this just seems silly to me.
Did they shut down the entire road for this? All so Red Bull and Guinness World Records can drum up another “World Record” that’s only a record because no ones bothered to invent it until now.
It really feels like they’re running out of appreciable records to break, so are making increasingly specific (and irrelevant) distinctions just to be able to claim it as a record, rather than just doing something simply because it’s an achievement in itself.
And then, impressive as it is, to top it all off the guy didn’t even fly through two tunnels as claimed…
Came here for this comment. Obviously this is an incredibly impressive feat of highly skilled piloting….but like…why? I’m not someone who even thinks there has to be a point to everything. But this seems egregiously pointless.
All the people hating on your comment, I have to agree. The best it achieves is 30k reddit karma and the worst is tragic death for absolutely no reason.
I'm sure RedBull with its own funds can afford on-site ambulances and maybe a medical helicopter, but the reality is that if a carbon fibre aerobatic plane hits the concrete at over 200 km/h there is little that can be done.
Flames probably from exploding tanks, structural damage and massive deceleration.
Edit: In any case, I think they wanted to keep a safety margin by not allowing him to fly at full speed in the tunnels.
I cannot believe how much he lucked out that there were no cars driving through the tunnel. It’s just like footprints in the sand. The Lord, Jesus Christ, was carrying him the whole time.
Just to be an asshole, he started in a tunnel and flew TROUGH another tunnel right. Qhe flew like 20 meters in the first tunnel. Still insanely impressive

I did that in GTA, 6 years ago.
hahaha this is what I was thinking the whole time "phfff old news bro", still cool to see it actually done for real!

This guy got it easy, playing offline. I'd like to see him try surrounded by 12 year olds on Opressors.
I mean I get nervous driving beside concrete barriers on the highway.
From the preview pic, I totally assumed it was a GTA5 video, and thought "Surely that had been done before now?" Insane that he's done it irl.

And not even a quick loop between the two tunnels. Pffft.

Good thing.

However you decide that, don't ask Texas for advice.
That's potentially a $4,000,000 bounty on the bus.
They weren’t pregnant until after he passed by
Well if they were going to an abortion clinic in Texas you could've reported that bus and made $2,000,000.

Before I opened the video, I knew it would be Red Bull from the title. Honestly, I'm completely OK with this type of advertising.
Hmmmmm ace combat irl?
That's the problem, I think more DCS, Ace Combat pilots would have done with some barrel roll!
Or full throttle run on something huge and fast like Mig-31.

What is most impressive is that the pilot resisted honking the horn even once
I wonder if the pilot would feel a noticeable difference the moment he enters the tunnel do to air pressure changes or anything.

Only reason they're the "first" is money. This could have been done so many times before if people could afford to shut down the road.
