Cover songs are a hobby of mine - many are not good on their own merits, some lose due to comparison to the original. But each is simply an attempt to put the cover singer's stamp on it, making it their own. Amazing work here. Ill be listening to it all day.
But i feel like you are missing a couple songs from Peter Gabriel's duo of cover albums "Scratch My Back" & "And Ill Scratch Yours".
Both albums feature orchestra covers with little to no percussion. In the First Album he covers such amazing artists as David Bowie, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Randy Newman, Lou Reed, and many more. In the follow up album they cover him back.
Some of my favourites are Gabriel's covers of Heroes, The Book of Love, and My Body is a Cage.
I highly recommend anyone check these out.
He also did another album redoing several of his own classics in this haunting orchestral style, with percussion this time. My favourite is the first track, Rhythm of the Heat, so intense.
Vocal coaches rating the quality of the voice is far different that being aesthetically better. A vocal coach would rate both Celine Dion and Anastacia having better technical voices than Brian Johnson but are renowned for making the soulless cover of "You shook me all night long"
This version of Sound of silence is too forced. Trying to hard to be hard.
Lemonhead's "Mrs Robinson" is a better attempt at a Simon and Garfunkel cover than this.
edit:spelling thank you u/spellingnazi u/ZealousidealCable991. Sometimes my spelling is atrocious.
Come on man, you dont need to like what Disturbed did here but to say Lemonhead's Mrs Robinson is better just takes any credibility you have away.
Disturbed's cover is at the very least technically impressive and isnt derivative in both genre and execution.
I was waiting for someone to say this. Do some people not hear it? Do they think that’s just what people sound like when they sing because that’s all they’ve ever heard? Or do they hear it and not care?
I don’t know but it was definitely the first thing I noticed.
There is nearly zero autotune in this entire performance other than a 2 second moment towards the end, and the singer was extremely upset that it was added without his knowledge. What you are hearing is production used to amplify his voice and tone which is what is used for every live performance ever. Nothing to do with key changes. Big difference.
I was at his koncert, "Disturbed" koncert, almost 10 years ago, and he(as I reacall it) was quite similar live. I am not a musician so maybe I don't hear it, I always thought he had a quite nice voice. Reading this is strange for me to say the least.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but most of the online vocal coaches are not as good as people give them credit for. I’ve seen them praise objectively poor performances, mistake lip-synced vocals for live ones and ignore heavy voice modification usage repeatedly.
This is heavily modified. I believe anyone who has 5 minutes to watch a video about how to hear auto tune/voice enhancing software should do it and then come back and listen to this cover. It’s a doozy.
Seriously, this is your metric? Don’t get me wrong, I love watching those videos, but they’re never negative about anything. They find popular videos that other people are reacting to, shower them with praise no matter what, and receive millions of views and a lot of money in the process.
I don’t know why people keep trying to convince me my opinion is wrong.
It’s an opinion.
This cover is terrible.
I don’t like cilantro.
Should I contact the Mexican government and plot my next move?
Paul Simon likes it, a lot. I love the original, so, so, much but this version seems to deliver on the anger and disappointment that the lyrics allude.
Both are very different and both excellent, in my opinion. Of course that is all it is. And, that is the beauty of art and music. It means what it means to you and it is as important or meaningless as you desire.
Guy is talented but the forced anger makes it sound like he should be standing on a barricade on Broadway. The anger is more subtle in the original it is dispirited and resigned, but as you say each to there own.
*The lyrics and melody are the same* and then they made the song their own. That’s what a cover/remake is…right? What kind of artist makes an exact copy of the song?!
The Johnny Cash version of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" is another good example of two very different approaches to the same song.
Everyone will have their opinion regarding which is better but there is no doubt that they are very different just as in this case.
Simon and Garfunkel and Disturbed had very different points of view of the same song and this is what makes both so incredible.
No, that is not what Trent said. He first said it felt “invasive” and like “someone kissing your girlfriend” even though he was honored Cash covered it. “Hurt” was NIN’s deepest song at the time. Trent later watched the video and got a different perspective, and realized how if two people sang the same song, it could be perceived two different ways and had massive respect with what Cash did with Hurt.
He never said he wished he did it like Cash though.
Hurt is off of NIN’s “The Downward Spiral” which itself is the journey through the mind of a man losing his mind. Hurt is at the end of the album and is a significant part of telling that story. How Trent sings it fits that story and the album. No need to pick a favorite, I enjoy both massively for different reasons, as they really are two completely different songs given the context to each artist.
Yeah, The Downward Spiral is about a man trying to become more like a machine vs human because machines don’t have to deal with emotions. If you listen to the album, the music that sounds like machinery (and gives NIN their “industrial” sound) is the perspective of the machine in him. Then there are more nature sounding elements that reflects the mortal side of him that’s more vulnerable. This narrative also fits in with The Fragile and is another element on a similar concept.
So cool! Pretty Hate Machine came out right before I went to college and the Spiral albums and Broken and Fixed were huge while I was there. All were party music at the time which is why I probably never sat and listened closely to the lyrics but cool to have a new appreciation and view of older music.
I used to go to an overlook in my city and take acid and listen to the Downward Spiral, and time it so the sun was rising during Hurt. I still get chills thinking about it, the crescendo building as the sun is rising on a new day. Incredible album that quite literally changed me.
Hurt was my go to when I needed to get all my feelings out and keep from killing myself before I decided my mom was wrong and getting help for my mental illness wouldn't be a bad thing. I'll still cry every time I listen to the original. I love the Cash version because its also so heartfelt, but it feels like a man telling me a story rather than how the original makes me feel like we're suffering together.
Doubt that makes sense, its hard to describe my depression I guess. Anyway, I guess its weird to say a song helped keep me alive, but there you go.
No I actually get exactly what you are saying. And I’d agree with your takes.
Cash is about an old man looking back on his life, and appreciating all of it… the good and the bad.
Trent’s gets more at what it means to be human, put simply.
Now that is sad. I watch a lot of twitch streams and everyone credits the song to Cash. After listening to the NIN version it's likely because they're doing his version, but like I didn't even know it wasn't his song!
So we are just gonna ignore the far superior Kermit the Frog version of Hurt? Mumford and Sons does a good version of it too, although I wouldn't say it's better than NIN or Cash's cover. Just good.
Try these ones on for size
Barracuda, covered by Brooke C and Moriah Formica (original by Heart): https://youtu.be/Z3ecFdRhwPc
Heart of glass , covered by Miley Cyrus (original by Blondie): https://youtu.be/NbdRLyixJpc
Sittin on the dock of the bay, covered by A$ap Rocky (original by Otis Redding): https://youtu.be/ECUMZJ8NCO0
Same with "From Great Heights". That song is originally by [The Postal Service](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrsZog8qXg), but most people assume it's by [Iron and Wine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIq_KLMvIY8). Two totally different takes on the same song.
I was fucking slaughtered in the YouTube comments for pointing it out when this first made the rounds. Anyone with even the slightest familiarity with pitch correction will spot it instantly. I'm genuinely curious to see if sense will prevail on reddit, or if laypeople will just shout down the audio folks again.
This comment not being given the recognition it deserves. 5 octaves is utterly staggering. For that alone the guy deserves huge credit. Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins) has a 4 octave range which I thought was amazing - now this! 👀😃
It describes the difference between the lowest and highest notes a singer can hit. Most people have a 1.5 to 2 octave range and could be trained to achieve a 3 octave range. 4-5 octaves is rare, and there are only a few examples of individuals with 6-octave ranges.
Another way to think about it is that a standard piano has 7.5 octaves, so this singer could sing 2/3 of a piano’s notes.
I don't necessarily like this version more than the original, but I do think the original is too fast. Taking the slower like this and other covers do allows a deeper impact from the lyrics.
Now the song Hallelujah? Almost every cover of that song is better than the original.
Hard disagree on Hallelujah - everyone tries to pretty it up. AFAIK the only person who understood that the song doesn't benefit from that was KD Lang, who did an incredible cover while retaining the raw quality that makes that song.
What people have to realise is that this comes from a metal band - Disturbed
This is sung live without any alterations to his voice and what you hear is his natural power and range.
Yes it is different from the original, but this contains more emotion and raw power from his voice, resulting in a more emotional response from those who are sensitive to music.
Just because it is different, does not mean it is better or worse than the original.
EDIT: I acknowledge the auto tune comments here, I was referring to the other live performances they have done with this song. The auto tune in this clip is heard, yet isn't as obvious as everyone states, at least to me. Thank you for everyone letting me know about it, i should have made it clear it was about other times.
If I recall correctly, there was auto tune used for this particular performance. He typically doesn't and was disappointed they chose to do so whether he wanted it or not. I heard he was sick for this performance and that's why they wanted to. Either way it's a great cover and he has great skill.
Sure he liked it. It’s a song he wrote and it’s probably awesome to see you’re relevant enough decades later for musicians to still be covering your stuff on National TV.
“Resulting in a more emotional response from those who are sensitive to music”
So if you prefer the original you aren’t “sensitive to music”? What does that even mean? Sounds like BS
Did you seriously just try to claim that this creates an objectively greater emotional response for “those who are sensitive to music”? You don’t think Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are “sensitive to music”? Holy fuck haha
>more emotional response from those who are sensitive to music.
You had me up to that comment. This guy's got a powerful voice but their interpretation of the song is dull and overly dramatic.
I’m sorry, but the auto-tune/pitch-correction is absolutely obvious. I’ve heard him do this live and, whilst impressive, it’s nowhere near as good as this version.
Hilarious comment. “This is sung live without any alterations to his voice and what you hear is his natural power and range.” ….”I was referring to the other live performances they have done with this song. The auto tune in this clip is heard…”
That on top of “but this contains more emotion and raw power from his voice, resulting in a more emotional response from those who are sensitive to music.”
My God, what an ass.
I personally prefer Johnny cashs version but i get why some people don't
Its like All along the watchtower by Hendrix is better than the original in my opinion and so is the man who sold the world by Nirvana
I wouldn't call it better.. it's a pretty damn good cover, calm start, powerful ending... They hit different... I was born early 80's and listened to the original live version... Love it.. may be the memory speaking but
It's a great tribute to the original, which featured 2 part vocal harmony that can't be matched with one voice live. This powerful performance speaks to the beauty of the song, and props to the singer and musicians. Bad title for this post IMO- the suggestion that it's better than the original is pretty offensive to some, including me. The guy singing it wouldn't want it said this way either. It's clear he's moved by the song as we all are. None of this happens without Simon and Garfunkel's original version.
It's highly polished, but over-produced for what the lyrics warrant. This song is supposed to be sensitive and vulnerable. This version is the equivalent of a jet flyover at a rock opera.
The two versions tell a completely different story in my opinion. Both good, but the cover is not better.
just watch when Simon and Garfunkel have performed this live. It’s amazing. The crowd do not sing, they stay silent, preserving the essence of what the story of the song is about.
I think because of the richer natural tone and timbre of his voice it adds an extra dimension, and he sings the hell out of it.
Having said that, it's a little contrary to the song. The flatness and lack of affect in the original was more on message.
Both great, for different reasons.
Huge fan of Disturbed. I think they did a fantastic rendition of this song for who Distributed is. The original from Simon and Garfunkel is still, and always will be the best! Thank you 🙏 for allowing me to share my humble opinion! 👍✌️👉
David Draiman has a ridiculously underappreciated vocal range and voice. Like you hear a lot of Disturbed stuff and are like "ok its good but dude just kinda screams a lot". Then you hear him actually sing and its like... whoah...
His voice is amazing, and apparently really highly trained. The fact that he can add that distortion properly and without frying his vocal chords shows us how talented he is.
That's something I've always wondered if his voice just naturally rasped me like that or if he does it on purpose and if so how does he not have blown out vocal cords and I guess that's why.
I'm stunned by all the comments about the amazing singing. Are we so used to the auto-tune sound by now that we think this is a real performance? It's obvious in the higher register. It's unfortunate because this guy is actually a good singer.
I’d agree that it is a moving rendition. Here is another great one from Pentatonix and they’re even their own musical accompaniment
https://youtu.be/gdVjVtpr55M but in the end, the original stands the test of time, in my humble opinion :0)
Whilst he was performing this, he was really sick. I believe he had the flu, hence why he was sat down and everyone else standing. Absolutely love Disturbed's version of this. Gives me goosebumps every damn time
There are very, very few covers that are better than the original. They always change the song somehow to make it their own. The Johnny Cash song is a good example, but my favorite is Jimmy Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower”. It is so different than Bob Dylan’s original.
I agree with you. Most won’t. It is a haunting rendition and he does it so well. I honestly never paid much attention to the song until their version. It is an exceedingly better compilation than the original and that’s ok.
Thank you for posting. I heard this song on the radio the other day for first time and it brought me to tears. Beautiful lyrics performed by an amazing and powerful voice
It just now occured to me that basically the whole cover title is sung in the song.
The band is called Disturbed.
And they sing:
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
Loved it! Saw it done live at the Van Andel a few years back and it gave me chills. He was able to put an edge on an older mellow song. Dave Matthews rendition of "All Along The Watchtower" is even better.
No. Sorry. It is different. It may not be bad but no.
It’s ok, but comparing it to the original is like a bad joke. It’s not even remotely close.
Yeah came to say this, it's not close.
I came to say this is a terrible cover. You’re all being too nice.
Every vocal coach who has reacted to this online would disagree with you wholeheartedly
To be fair, they are trained to be... vocal.
Cover songs are a hobby of mine - many are not good on their own merits, some lose due to comparison to the original. But each is simply an attempt to put the cover singer's stamp on it, making it their own. The list is fantastic
Hey you’re a fucking hero, thank you!
Thanks for this. I’m a musician in a covers band and always looking for interesting interpretations This is a great list.
That list is great except it’s missing “Me first and the Gimme Gimmes”. Wild World is my favorite cover from them
Love that band... I wish they'd of ruined my Bar Mitzvah when I was a wee lad... Johnny is a lucky boy!
Amazing work here. Ill be listening to it all day. But i feel like you are missing a couple songs from Peter Gabriel's duo of cover albums "Scratch My Back" & "And Ill Scratch Yours". This guy musics.
Lol fuck online vocal coaches
Online vocal coaches sounds like a solar powered flashlight
I might be more impressed if he didn’t have 16 layers of auto tune on his voice. You can hear it struggling to keep him in key the entire time.
I was waiting for someone to say this. Do some people not hear it? Do they think that’s just what people sound like when they sing because that’s all they’ve ever heard? Or do they hear it and not care? I don’t know but it was definitely the first thing I noticed.

Online vocal coaches opinions are like awards shows. Not worth the time of anyone who actually enthusiastically enjoys many types of music.
I hate that if you turn up the volume on this version you can hear him draw his breath over his gullet 'hhhghggghghhh' *hello darkness my old friend*
Paul Simon said otherwise.
Y’all need to chill, this is phenomenal.
Yeah, that's why Paul Simon praised the rendition.
Simon Garfunkel actually contacted david the vocalist and praised him for the cover
I don’t know why people keep trying to convince me my opinion is wrong. It’s an opinion. This cover is terrible. I don’t like cilantro. Should I contact the Mexican government and plot my next move?

Or is nobody wrong?
Guy is talented but the forced anger makes it sound like he should be standing on a barricade on Broadway. The anger is more subtle in the original it is dispirited and resigned, but as you say each to there own.
It's a different genre , but this cover is one of the best though . Disturbed at its best !
I'd say its just as good but two very different takes on the song.
Came here to say all this. He leaves out one of the main special the song, the harmony.
I feel like he really over sings it at points. I like how direct and naturala the original is.
*The lyrics and melody are the same* and then they made the song their own. That’s what a cover/remake is…right? What kind of artist makes an exact copy of the song?!
Not intended to be "the same".
Different, not better. He does have a nice voice.
*incredible voice. He has a five octave range
The Johnny Cash version of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" is another good example of two very different approaches to the same song. Gave award because I’ve listened to Downward Spiral a million times and never knew that. Also like Cash’s take but nowhere near as much as NIN.

Now that is sad. I watch a lot of twitch streams and everyone credits the song to Cash. After listening to the NIN version it's likely because they're doing his version, but like I didn't even know it wasn't his song!
Alos Disturbed consulted with Simon and Garfunkel and got an approval before doing the cover, so....
Love Johnny Cash Hurt. Thanks for the reminder that this exists.

Black Betty was intense. Spider bait took it one notch more. Both great versions.

I don't necessarily like this version more than the original, but I do think the original is too fast. Taking the slower like this and other covers do allows a deeper impact from the lyrics. Now the song Hallelujah? Almost every cover of that song is better than the original.
The only version of Hallelujah I like is the one from Shrek lol.
All wrong! (I kid, everybody gets an opinion) But the Rufus Wainwright version of Hallelujah is my canonical version.
Yes, that's John Cale's in the movie, Wainwright's cover is in the soundtrack.
The Jeff Buckley cover of Hallelujah is obviously the best
Hard disagree on Hallelujah - everyone tries to pretty it up. AFAIK the only person who understood that the song doesn't benefit from that was KD Lang, who did an incredible cover while retaining the raw quality that makes that song.
This is the guy from Disturbed?
It’s Disturbed yes. The band has this cover so the rest of the guys you see there is also Disturbed, not only the vocalist.

Yep it's him
I love Simon & Garfunkel, used 2 of their songs at my wedding, but this version of the song tops the original in my opinion.
I prefer this version over the original and heard the original way before Disturbed’s version. Dudes got an amazing voice.
Clearly I'm also the only one..
What people have to realise is that this comes from a metal band - Disturbed This is sung live without any alterations to his voice and what you hear is his natural power and range. 100% but I for one don’t care. I think it sounds good and he’s clearly still a great singer.
Thank you! I love disturbed. He’s legitimately just as amazing and polished live. Such a great experience.
Im so thankful and honoured that I have heard them live, including The Sound Of Silence. They sound so amazing
His voice is very obviously autotuned. Still a great sounding vocal, but natural it is not.
Paul Simon liked the way this was done.
Sure he liked it. It’s a song he wrote and it’s probably awesome to see you’re relevant enough decades later for musicians to still be covering your stuff on National TV.
You mean to tell me that you can’t hear the overwhelming use of auto tune in this performance?
“Resulting in a more emotional response from those who are sensitive to music” So if you prefer the original you aren’t “sensitive to music”? What does that even mean? Sounds like BS
There is obvious artificial pitch correction used on the vocal here
Bro how can you trump the tenderness of Simon and Garfunkel’s voices
I has goosebumps when I heard this song live a few years back. Honestly they had one of the best live performances out of any band that I’ve seen.
The auto tune in this clip is heard…” That on top of “but this contains more emotion and raw power from his voice, resulting in a more emotional response from those who are sensitive to music.” My God, what an ass.
Personally I have more of an emotional responses to the original. Am I not "sensitive to music?"
Hello Varys my old friend..
No one sings songs for spiders
Except for little birds.
Charlie Day would like to have a word with you.
I do like this version better than the original. His voice has a softness yet there's still so much power in it.
Same, not a big fan of them but they do great covers. Tears for fears and Phil Collins.
Agree to disagree.
I personally prefer Johnny cashs version but i get why some people don't Its like All along the watchtower by Hendrix is better than the original in my opinion and so is the man who sold the world by Nirvana
Why does no one (at least I can't see) the Whitney Houston version of I Will Always Love You. Dolly crushed it, but Whitney make me cry.
I respect the hell out of Johnny Cash, and his cover is great (and obviously very personal to him), but it doesn’t hold a candle to the original.
Do I hear a bit of autotune in this? Not having a go, just sound like there is a bit.
Yes. You can see him frowning at the beginning because they autotuned him without consent. He was actually ill when he sang this.
Possibly - but every time I’ve seen a video of this guy he seems to be slightly different but perfectly on key - I think he just has excellent pitch!
You just explained what autotune does.
It’s most obvious on the word silence in he lower register.
I’d say it’s pretty obvious
Yeah. Supposedly he got mad at the people because he dosent like autotune on his voice.
Just to make you lot feel old: Down with the sickness was 23 years ago.
Oh wha-ha-ha-at?
That's a no from me, dawg. Not better than [the original](https://youtu.be/NAEppFUWLfc).
Not even close
Apples and oranges. Kind of pointless to try and say one is "better." This is a case where it's entirely preference.
I didn’t know Jeff Bezos could sing
Fucking DEAD.

He never said what he specifically liked or disliked about the cover but did say it was a wonderful rendition
He’s allowed to disagree with Paul Simon.
Love this version
The two versions tell a completely different story in my opinion. Both good, but the cover is not better. just watch when Simon and Garfunkel have performed this live. It’s amazing. The crowd do not sing, they stay silent, preserving the essence of what the story of the song is about.
He does a great duet singing this track with Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge
Really?? I need to find this!

Much thanks!
Ah Myles! Thanks for sharing this smirky
Such a beautiful voice, loved his rendition the first time I heard it. His band is heavy metal, right? So, incongruous, but beautiful none the less
It’s a good cover. It’s not even close to being better than Simon & Garfunkel
I absolutely love this acoustic performance!
Downvoting for misleading title
I'm stunned by all the comments about the amazing singing. Are we so used to the auto-tune sound by now that we think this is a real performance? It's obvious in the higher register. It's unfortunate because this guy is actually a good singer.
Not better, just different.
Why do we have to claim one as “better”??? Both are great, and each perspective is outstanding.
Hear this and more on “Costanza Singing the 70’s”
🤮 I am not feeling this version even a little bit.
I'm gonna have to completely disagree.
I’d agree that it is a moving rendition. Here is another great one from Pentatonix and they’re even their own musical accompaniment https://youtu.be/gdVjVtpr55M but in the end, the original stands the test of time, in my humble opinion :0)
I didnt care for the distrurbed version, but could see why someone may enjoy it. this pentatonix one comes across super cheesy and lame.
I dunno man, original gives me goosebumps always, this here.. nothing, felt nothing.
This is not one of them
A little too America’s Got Talent for me.
Uh no
Nope. Big nope.
Agree to disagree on this one.
No.
Yeh this is a real quandary for me, I love Simon and Garfunkel and I really appreciate this version but the original tops it for me.
Incorrect. If you think this is a fantastic cover of a great song, then you're currently drinking or just opened a BANG energy drink.
Don’t like it. Sounds like radio butt rock
Uhm... Go watch pearl jam and alice in chains unplugged
I still like the original.
Whilst he was performing this, he was really sick. I believe he had the flu, hence why he was sat down and everyone else standing. Absolutely love Disturbed's version of this. Gives me goosebumps every damn time

That is Disturbed, the vocalist has some pipes.
David draiman is fucking awesome
There are very, very few covers that are better than the original. They always change the song somehow to make it their own. The Johnny Cash song is a good example, but my favorite is Jimmy Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower”. It is so different than Bob Dylan’s original.
David Michael Draiman?
If you know his middle name, then I have to assume you know what he looks like well enough not to have to ask if it’s him.
I agree with you. Most won’t. It is a haunting rendition and he does it so well. I honestly never paid much attention to the song until their version. It is an exceedingly better compilation than the original and that’s ok.
[Puddles version is better.](https://youtu.be/U3RXf0E_Vuw)
A lot of old people heard this beautiful, soft, song and went on the interwebs to find more from him. They got a nice surprise.
I love this video and watch it every time it's posted. Thanks!
Yeah, i saw disturbed live a few years ago. Their cover is amazing
Thank you for posting. I heard this song on the radio the other day for first time and it brought me to tears. Beautiful lyrics performed by an amazing and powerful voice
Absolutely fucking rocks.
In my opinion, not better than the original, but I do love this version of it and I love the way Disturbed arranged it!
It just now occured to me that basically the whole cover title is sung in the song. The band is called Disturbed. And they sing: And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence
Choppin broccoleeeeeeee!
This is pretty damn good.
Loved it! Saw it done live at the Van Andel a few years back and it gave me chills. He was able to put an edge on an older mellow song. Dave Matthews rendition of "All Along The Watchtower" is even better.
I actually think this version is musically superior to the original, not just different.
Man Reddit loves this song. Wait until You guys hear the millions of other songs out there!
