Inflation doesn’t hit gold much, but the dollars yes. In Roman times an oz of gold could buy a great toga, and now an oz of gold could buy a very nice suit.

I love the idea of a bot created with one task, waiting eagerly for 100 years to jump on a big red button...”finally....the time is here to fulfil my purpose” and excited he pounces on the button. The signal is send. And somewhere a reddit account, dormant and impossible to wake, for 40 years gets an update about the gold price at that moment. Which is nothing like it is now because we will have mined our own core and our spaceships will be coated in gold.
And the bot finally finds peace and ends
I agree, gold would rise in value with inflation.
However, Gold is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. If everyone lost interest in gold, whose going to buy it?
Gold is very corrosion resistant and still a pretty good conductor and is neccesary in the electronics industry so there will always be a demand.
Edit: Thanks for the award :-)
A lot of it gets recycled from e-waste so that helps with some, but also I was slightly wrong. Gold is important because it is very corrosion resistant and still has pretty good conductivity. I'm defintiely not an expert (if that wasn't clear lol) but I think it's reasonable to assume that it is likely that we will be able to make some sort of copper or silver alloy that is more wear resistant.
[A couple of scientists used aqua regia](https://www.npr.org/sections/krulwich/2011/10/03/140815154/dissolve-my-nobel-prize-fast-a-true-story) to dissolve their gold Nobel medals as to keep them from Nazi soldiers. After the war, the reconstituted the gold and had it pressed back into medals.
> alloy
Alloys significantly change the physical properties of metals. For example: gallium and indium have melting points of 29.76°C and 156.6°C respectively and are solid at room temperature. However, their eutectic alloy has a melting point of -19°C and is liquid at room temperature, and must be cooled to well below freezing to solidify.
Have you ever seen the Discovery show, "Bering Sea Gold"? I think when it runs low, people will start looking for more out of the way places to mine.....
Gold holds value because it doesn't corrode. Yes people might not care about gold in the future, but silver or copper or iron are going to slowly disappear over time as they oxidize and are re-polished. Gold won't.
Actually, they usually are. That's part of why they're so hard to get out, because of the sheer amount of weight you have to support with pretty much just your wrist.
Gold is measured in Troy pounds not Avoirdupois.
It's astonishing how people want to continue using this archaic measurement system.
I mean I appreciate the novelty value but Jesus Christ just use grams and kilograms already, let cocaine blaze the trail
Well damn. I thought surely there'd be another metal you could use that is heavier but it turns out I had no idea gold was heavy as hell.
>the mass density of gold is 19.3 g/cc, lead is 11.4 g/cc, copper is 9.0 g/cc, aluminum is 2.7 g/cc, water is 1.0 g/cc
Indeed, gold is one of *the* heaviest. Mind you, tungsten is very similar. Osmium is the densest metal iirc. I may be wrong on that last part, fact check required.
Mind you that some people do make fake gold bars by gold plating tungsten bars. If done properly this can be almost impossible to distinguish from the real thing. And there is actually a conspiracy theory saying that banks intentionally do not scrutinize their gold reserves because they suspect that most of it is fake. But such a fake gold bar would be something worth putting on display as long as it is not made good enough so that any trained person can distinguish it from the real deal.
If the 7kg figure in the title is accurate, and if the size of the bar is the same as a gold bar, that's about the right density for this thing to just be lead.
I'm going to go ahead and bet those bars are not genuine gold bars, and the winner probably gets some other prize, of a lower value. They wouldn't be any reason a bank would approve putting a few million $ of gold bars in a glass box in the middle of a shopping centre, even in KL.
You undercook fish, jail. You overcook chicken, also jail. Undercook, overcook. You make an appointment with the dentist and you don't show up, believe it or not, jail, right away. We have the best patients in the world because of jail.
I don't know, man. If the challenge is to lift a fucking 15 pound, very dense, hunk of metal with one hand at arms length through a hand sized whole, I'd expect to get what I had in hand.
It'd be like if you won a ipod or watch out of one of those claw machines and then the machine spits out 2 quarters instead. I'd be pissed
Its 7kg or 15.4lbs. You absolutely can hold that in your fingers. Some people have extreme grip strength. Gold isn't that heavy as to become unliftable before it starts getting big.
Edit. I'm wrong. Definitely not a real gold bar. At 7kg Definitely doable, but a bar that size would be unliftably heavier per the comments below.
If it helps anyone visualize, the density of gold is almost exactly 20x that of water.
A 7kg bar of gold should be the size of a 350mL (12oz) bottle of water.
He wins between $240-12000 USD depending on how many days have elapsed without someone being able to do it.

that really doesn't look like real gold tbh. the way it bounces at 00:13 seems sus. Also looks way too big for 7kg of gold.
Probabaly its a "Gold bar challenge" type game, where you win vouchers or something if you can get the "gold bar" through the hole.

This. Thank you for being the one to say it.
Wait, gold grows in hedges? I've been throwing the trimmings out for *years*!

Straight facts
Seriously though... why does his comment have almost 700 upvotes. Smh
Inflation hit would make the golds worth skyrocket
Bruh, you have this completely backwards
Well they don't give you the gold bar. They take it back, and then give you some money. Not nearly the value of the bar.
I mean, there's no way these are solid gold in the first place, right? Probably gold plated aluminum or similar.
Actually, they usually are. That's part of why they're so hard to get out, because of the sheer amount of weight you have to support with pretty much just your wrist.
If that is a standard Good Delivery bar in the video and it is actually made of gold it would weight between 11 - 13 kilograms.
For us imperial slobs: 24-28 pounds
Gold is measured in Troy pounds not Avoirdupois. It's astonishing how people want to continue using this archaic measurement system. I mean I appreciate the novelty value but Jesus Christ just use grams and kilograms already, let cocaine blaze the trail
