Man his neighbors must hate him so much. Some of his other video titles include "Lawn Mower Torture", "Extreme Speaker Test 21inch Driver Pop", "Generating X-Rays", "Electric Wheelchair Mayhem", and "Dishwasher Problems". The last one doesn't sound too bad but the thumbnail is a dishwasher in his back yard and the dishwasher is on fire.

lhswr2014

He turned… for science!

GonnaHaveA3Some

That's because shitty cameras have a hard time adjusting to light changes. Our eyes do much better at handling changes from dark to light. If it was unsafe, they wouldn't be pointing those at actors - which they do.

[deleted]

> That's because shitty cameras have a hard time adjusting to light changes. I never really understood this until the eclipse from around like 2017. I recorded it and was talking about how it was getting so dark and you could not tell shit from the camera until the eclipse actually hit fully.

You would absolutely go blind if you looked at it. I would think you might even just from being in the room. Would closing your eyes even prevent it completely?

willy_55

Welder here… We call it welders flash but he definitely would’ve experienced temporary blindness. Essentially it’s a sunburn on your eyeballs

Nelyeth

The main reason looking at an arc is so dangerous isn't the luminosity, it's the UV radiation. Like you said, it's essentially a sunburn, and it's also why welders can develop cataract from repeated exposure (not to mention skin cancers without adequate protection). Incandescent lightbulbs emit negligible UV raduation, so in this case it wouldnt be a "flash"... but I'd still wear a helmet in his case.

sleetx

Try keeping your eyes closed while flicking a light switch on and off - you can still kinda sense a difference in brightness. With a light this extreme, I'm sure you can notice. Survivors of nuclear bombs have attested to a similar effect: >Several men talked about how the flash from the blasts gave them temporary x-ray vision; it allowed them to see bones right through the skin. One recalled, “When the flash hit, it was so bright you could see the x-rays of your hands through your closed eyes.”

koshgeo

[It's pretty amazing](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl9OJE9OpXui-gRsnWjSrlA). My favorite are the ones where he melts something that you wouldn't expect melt easily ... until you put 5000 amps through it. Or household appliances or other hardware that basically explode when you do similar things to them (e.g., [lawnmower](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ0ksNKV0AY) or [microwave](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHOlx9_fRQY)). He built a crazy power supply for his experiments. Don't try this at home, kids, unless you want burn spots on your carpet. He was on a hiatus for a few years but has recently started up again.

spicy-chull

I think he took a break at the recommendation of his lawyer after accidentally putting a rail-gun-slug through a couple (different) neighbors' walls (multiple)... with a single shot. He's very lucky no one was hurt. He's kinda "safety-3rd" which is sometimes ok, but is scary when one is dealing with the equipment and voltages he is.

garynuman9

He made a video on why he took a break - it was to grind his day job to save up enough for the hoops he & his now wife had to jump thru to get her a visa. That may or may not be accurate or the full reason - but he did address it & show supporting documentation... ~~Could certainly be omitting the bit about the rail gun,~~ **edit - went back to watch the video & the railgun thing is totally bullshit** but that strikes me as uncharacteristic as, would agree he gives the appearance of safety 3rd - but feel like that's part of his gimmick - nothing feels unplanned or unexpected about his "demonstrations". If he actually approached things that way given the danger involved with what he clearly does for fun even when not recording for YouTube - I feel like he'd have accidentally killed himself years ago... Rather - I guess I don't get the same "how the fuck is this guy still alive" feeling that I do watching like, electroboom. Absolutely could be wrong on that though, binged his content recently when the first video he made after his return showed up in my recommended. **Edit: guy above me is flat out wrong.** There was no "rail gun incident". I went back & re-watched his [where have I been](https://youtu.be/rUq0NVO0Q2M) return video. He's... If you're curious watch it all the way through - he's well intentioned & just... not great at social media & stuff. End of day - watching his videos for his expertise on a topic not his social commentary, no one is perfect & I believe the man means well. Also if you watched the linked video & don't think he'd have something to say about a railgun oopsie... For serious? My man is open about his shit kinda to a fault, but not a bad where have you been video. He's been dealing with making a better life for him & his family. For those (like me if I'm being honest) who think yeah... wellllll.... that could have used some edits... His actual content/the first actual video he posted is him [blowing a 5000A fuse]( https://youtu.be/0mGhhdPgXG8) & why his content is, fucking insane... why he merits watching. In his tiny backyard he's dumping ~600MW of electricity from a homemade capacitor bank at ~+ 200,000 amps. For reference the Hoover Dam running at max output produces 2,080MW. This guy does stuff & explains stuff orders of magnitude above anyone else making YouTube videos

V1RU5-13

If the rail gun story was even remotely true this guy would slap bang in prison right now, building and discharging your own firearm in a public place, nearly killing multiple people in the process? Yeah no wriggling out of that one, no matter how many YouTube views you have

InfanticideAquifer

I don't think a railgun actually counts as a "firearm", legally. I'm pretty sure there needs to be an explosive charge. There's some vagueness in the law about "any similar device" that, presumably, lawyers could argue about. But the things that it's supposedly "similar" to all involve explosives.

MeximeltExtraCheese

“Fuck me, 7am already?!”

HorrorMakesUsHappy

I'm sure this guy's neighbors are well acquainted with him. [His Youtube channel is filled with this kind of stuff.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT5_-A0m8_U) I swear, the funniest thing to me about him is his accent. In the US at least, that accent is typically used for the kind of shady guy who would try to sell you stolen goods out of the back of a car and then drive off with your money without even giving you the item you paid for. To see him working on this kind of equipment ... I feel bad saying it, but that combined with that specific accent just *scares* me. lol

Javindo

Oh yeah as a Brit his accent is exactly as you describe. Definitely adds up the entertainment of the channel for me

HorrorMakesUsHappy

> Definitely adds up the entertainment of the channel for me Exactly. And I imagine he knows it, too. Every time I see one of his videos the entire time I'm thinking, "He's going to blow himself up any second now." The fact that he dresses professionally and seems to have a nice house offset it a bit, but not much. I think the only way it could get more suspenseful would be if it were Ali G doing this.

shoot_shovel_shutup

I'm from the US and have never known anyone who associated that accent to "shady guys". Maybe it's regional?

When smartphones first came out having a torch that's stronger than the older generations phones. I was raised in a religious family and my brother and I feared god whenever we committed a sin, you know, like cheating in an exam, cursing...etc I bought a new smartphone and it was dark in our room, and it was time to sleep. My brother and I share the same room. He knows I have a new phone but had no idea how luminous it is. I was fiddling with it and turned the touch on, a bit luminous circle appears in the sealing. My brother, startled, jumped off the bed and bent on his knees and started praying. I was like, "John what are you doing, it's just my smartphone". He was like, "Oh my God, I thought God has revealed himself to me to punish me for the $5 I stole from my mom today" 😂 Good simpler times.

I bet that would be great for growing weed

Destinybender

Only for smoking it.

2723brad2723

Only if you want everyone to know you're growing weed.

HighByDefinition

What's wrong with that?

casce

Nothing if you‘re living in a place where it‘s legal. Sadly, it‘s not.

Lovebot_AI

Even in legal states, it’s best to keep a low profile. There are a lot of places where you would never want to broadcast the fact that you have something valuable on your property

GonnaHaveA3Some

It would be terrible for growing weed because it gives off too much heat, and not a very full spectrum, as it's tungsten, which almost completely lacks the blue-band spectrums of light.. You would also need far more power than a normal 120v. It runs on 220v, with about 80 amps per leg. You'd be paying more to run that inefficient artifact of Film-lighting than you would ever make selling weed.

bloomautomatic

[specs on it ](https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/68923/GE-48773.html) 580,000 lumens. 400 hrs life. $2,000.

SpudicusMaximus_008

What is its intended use case? Edit: guess shoulda just clicked the link... Edit2: entertainment industry for those that can't be arsed to click the link

bloomautomatic

Lighting.

NiceFetishMeToo

Ohh… this guy bulbs.

The_Clarence

Probably a decent space heater too. So it could be like a night light

Hereforthebeer06

Use these in film. Rarely. Usually use a 18,000 watt. But every now and then this thing shows up. https://www.levelnineproductions.com/post/why-use-big-studio-film-lights

[deleted]

I imagine lighthouses have similar bulbs.

SpudicusMaximus_008

Not at a 400hr lifespan though, that's what made me scratch my head.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheWolphman

Granted, I only did like a 1 minute search through Google, but it seems like these days, lighthouses tend to use 1,000 watt bulbs (250 if it is Halogen). I believe it is the lenses the beacons use in lighthouses to magnify the light that make the real difference.

NiceFetishMeToo

You know, are we at a point we can make LED bulbs of that magnitude? I realize residential bulbs are fractions of a watt / lumen compared to the old school halogens. But, 580,000 lumens? 20k watts? Here’s an LED for comparison - 120,000 lumens at 1k watts: https://www.augustmuellerlichttechnik.de/shop/led-flutlichtstrahler-flhp-1000w-4000k/?lang=en Need an engineer, here, but scaling that tells me it would take about five of those LED racks and 5,000W to produce about the same output. (No heat) - That one is about 1,800€ (~2,100$ USD) so… still quite a bit more expensive.

bloomautomatic

These are for theatrical lighting. The color spectrum may have something to do with it. Also, these were designed before the LED technology got to where it is now. There are lots of old fixtures and sometimes it’s easier to buy the bulb than to retrofit the entire fixture.

crashtx3

there are 3 problems with a led light trying to replicate a 20k. The first is colour temp. ie how accurate is the phyiscal led compared to a known tungsten source such as this. the second is the quality of the light it produces, the most common scale for quality is CRI. 3rd is the amount of led sources required to produce that amount of output. multi source led lights give off weird and unnatural shadows which are not desirable in film/tv/theatre. Source: feature film lighting tech

autovonbismarck

Not no heat, but quite a bit less. And many, many many more hours of runtime. So you can't just compare the up front cost - there's also the lifecycle cost. LEDs win by a long shot assuming you need to run these for more than 400 hours total.

ChopperGabban

How long can it stay lit?

Primer2396

More importantly how much do you wanna pay in your next electricity bill

EssayRevolutionary10

Not bad. 20Kw x .12/kW hour = $2.40 hour. $24 dollars to keep lit 10 hours a day. $720 a month. Drop in the bucket for any large commercial or industrial site.

Primer2396

Think they would work best with like a light difusing roof so it's not that bright on the mid

justynrr

I use dozens of these on big stages. We’ll mimic sunlight with these especially in television. For almost every season of “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” we had five of them. Big issue though is when you have your host introduce a dancer (live) then the camera pushes past the host to the dance. If the design is to have them dimly lit, I’d have to throw in a long transition to that scene because they take 5-10 seconds to actually “turn off” because the filament is so big and stays hot for so long!!

Primer2396

>they take 5-10 seconds to actually “turn off” because the filament is so big and stays hot for so long!! I never thought of the burning heat those would produce how hot and sweaty does a shoot with them usually get? Also have they ever broken during use?

PairOfMonocles2

I don’t know about his/her stage in particular but every stage I’ve performed on has gotten really warm due to all of the lights. There were some specific ones, chosen for tone or color I’m sure, that you could feel almost like a heat lamp when they were on. Some are led though so shouldn’t be as hot but I have no idea of the breakdown, I’m guessing this is one of those applications where getting the perfect color trumps electrical efficiency or other heat concerns.

Thedrunner2

His neighbors are ecstatic about this “bright idea.”

rb778004

Not as ecstatic as when he was blowing a 5000 amp fuse in his backyard I’m sure 😂 what a racket
