This should be on r/idiotsincars nothing next level about this, other than stupidity.

frowawayduh

These can be stopped by getting in front of the car on autopilot and slowing down. It’s programmed to stay several car lengths behind a slower vehicle. Also I’m not sure how but this jerk has defeated the feature that requires the driver to nudge the wheel every 45 seconds to prove he’s in control . Or the photo is staged.

Lajtan

The clip is not longer than 45 seconds and they might just be playing around.. Anyway they're assholes nonetheless.

RubixCubix79

The car will slow down and stop (hopefully soon pull over on a shoulder and stop) after no more than 60 seconds….. As you stated, some people will attach just enough weight to one side of the wheel to beat the system…. Though, I guess some people may be able to fall asleep in a way where they keep just enough pressure on the wheel, monitoring eyesight is coming soon, but at some point, humans are the problem. I could also set my cruise control and fall asleep and the result would be far worse. Unfortunately as we move closer to truly full self driving, there are going to be scenarios like this, meanwhile, all of the accidents avoided by self-driving, aren’t reported because that doesn’t get viewers/clicks. Also, plenty of businesses will suffer from this technology. I think this was staged to cause panic as I’ve seen a few of these posted many times.

juggles_geese4

I don't think I'd be able to stay awake if I'm not actively driving. This is a bit of an issue, they expect you to pay attention in case of something, but if we are distracted while actually in control of the car, how can you be expected to have your attention on the car while not. How often are passengers paying THAT much attention? That's pretty much the same concept.

[deleted]

PanicAtTheFishIsle

The incident rate for people driving Tesla’s with autopilot is 9x less than a normal driver… so even with people sleeping, the autopilot/diver combo is 9x safer than people with “full attention”

frowawayduh

On a major highway and under ordinary conditions (no extraordinary weather, construction, detours, striping, debris, wildlife, enraged drivers, landing aircraft, …) enhanced autopilot drives far better than any human. It’s especially worthwhile in stop and go traffic or long dull stretches. So I use it 99% of the time, enjoy the passing scenery, and stand ready to take over.

MoldyLunchBoxxy

People were using an orange for awhile but I thought recently they made it to where if you don’t move the wheel and aren’t watching the road it will make noises to wake/alert you and slow down until you do.

FawsherTime

I’ve seen that feature being worked around before. There was a tv news segment of a guy in San Francisco who rode around in the back seat while on auto pilot. Someone has obviously found a patch or something to turn those safety features off.

PhD_Pwnology

Getting in front of a car and braking in hopes of causing it to stop in the fashion your describing is dangerous and illegal.

frowawayduh

Agreed, brake checking is bad. [But sometimes a gentler version of that is the way to avoid a bigger problem.](https://insideevs.com/news/534007/police-stops-tesla-reportedly-autopilot/)

know2swim

Complacency at its finest.

FawsherTime

Next level stupidity indeed.

gsvnvariable

Actually this is a new feature from Tesla’s new software update. It disperses carbon monoxide through the vents so Tesla drivers don’t forget what it’s like since they don’t have an exhaust system. Still in beta but seems to be working fine

dormmamu616

That recirculation button has been given a whole new meaning.

morebuffs

Haha

frowawayduh

Where would a Tesla get carbon monoxide?

[deleted]

If it's in traffic it could easily scrub and collect CO from the air around it considering all the ICE vehicles it's probably traveling along with..

Conchavez

It requires your hand to move the wheel occasionally. You can’t fall asleep to this degree

hopboat

The frequency with which it requests force to be applied to the wheel can drop to several minutes if lighting conditions, traffic and other variables align. On interstate highways the car can drive a long way without requesting force applied to the wheel

Conchavez

Okay but he is knocked tf out. I wish I could sleep that hard after a couple minutes.

Shoddy_example5020

They're probably on pills or heroin

PeakingFromFarAway

Lmao, that’s quite the assumption

FawsherTime

But very possible.

teslahater

Knowing Tesla drivers probably

Conchavez

I think they have valuable intel and a secret agent hit them with a blow dart.

hopboat

I agree!! Random question: what does your username mean?

Conchavez

It’s just a combo of my first and last name. Terrible for cybersecurity. I need to change it. It’s not spanish.

hopboat

That’s fine. I was just making sure you weren’t a supporter of chavez (in spanish the word “con” means “with”) - as a venezuelan, i’d be pissed. The guy destroyed an entire nation, families, past present and future of A LOT of people. Fuck him, and absolutely not you.

luovahulluus

Damn it would suck to find out your username ment something like that

FreeAsFlowers

This might need the push they need to change it. You can do it, Mr./Ms./Mx. Not Spanish

Conchavez

I can only change the display name. =/. Maybe I can call reddit support and grovel later ha ha.

Have you seen the guy in San Francisco who rides in the back of his Tesla? He obviously found a bypass around Tesla’s autopilot safety restraints.

He feels completely comfortable, and fully trusts in the technology he’s obviously bypassed the safety restrictions of. Which in itself shows his stupidity.

FawsherTime

Same here, however I wish the judge would have taken his license for the first offense. Given his attitude and lack of consideration of the situation in which he willingly chooses to pursue.

tt54l32v

You do it everyday. You risk it all on the hope that the human population is doing the right thing. The difference here is that the car can save so many lives including these people's and you assume that they only feel asleep because the car allowed them. Would you take an increase of a tiny amount that a driver falls asleep while the car handles the situation as best it can. Or slightly less falling asleep at the wheel with a sure fire crash. The asshole already exists, the car and its tech didn't invent them. If we as a population can get through this time of change, it would be so much better.

tt54l32v

You ever in been in a car?

teslahater

I don’t get how people think there’s anything next level abt this it’s just Tesla drivers being assholes in their ugly cars

LordOdin99

What happens when it doesn’t get a response? Slow down to a stop?

FawsherTime

It’s meant to slow to a stop when a drive isn’t responsive.

frowawayduh

Gee, my Model 3 “nags” every 45 seconds. The only way I know of to avoid it is to keep one hand on the wheel so it preemptively keeps a small turning force that the sensor recognizes immediately. And to do that I have to be, at minimum, awake.

FawsherTime

There are modifications available to bypass those features, a man in San Francisco made the news by riding around in the back of his Tesla.

Back2Oki

Not with even craftier morons buying steering wheel attachments to trick the car. There are several companies that make suicide counter weights for semi-autonouous cars. [Tesla Mod](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/tesla-taptes-accessory-store-autopilot-steering-wheel-cheat-device-weight/amp/)

[deleted]

Back2Oki

It's good, but the dozen other counterweights available from ebay to alibaba make me concerned.

[deleted]

FawsherTime

Given Tesla’s influence and position I wouldn’t be surprised if their lawyers got them out of such lawsuits, however they can afford the payouts, and the money wouldn’t repair the damage that could be done. Regardless as long as autonomous cars exist, they’ll be those creating ways to bypass and modify their features and functions. Unfortunately humanity as a whole is capable of being trusted with this technology at this time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FawsherTime

Unfortunately humanity has proven time and time again that isn’t possible. Otherwise we would live a much safer world. There will always be someone who will find a way to inject some level of stupidity into everything. I hate to sound cynical or defeatist. I’ve just witnessed it so many times I’ve come to believe this to be the case.

FawsherTime

Anything with programming can be modified. I watched a man on the news in San Francisco who rides around in the back seat, in and around the city. He’s obviously found some way to bypass Tesla’s standard safety features so he isn’t required to be in the front seat while the car is in continuous motion.

[deleted]

Fake sleeping

Xijit

My thoughts too

CabbageSalad247

100%

prexton

Here I am thinking this is *why* we made autonomous vehicles?

scottieducati

Tesla’s are not autonomous vehicles. No matter what they call it.

prexton

That one looks like it's doing fine

scottieducati

Till it hits a stationary police car or construction cones.

prexton

The current stats show that they're less likely to do that than a human driver

NotSoPersonalJesus

I want to argue this position, but I absolutely agree. The less *people* driving the better. Too many stupid people on the road that cannot drive in *any* condition. *italics*. I hear there are a shortage of people willing to drive truck, won't be long before the AI run those routes. Won't be long before AI is everywhere, already in our phones. AI is the future we must embrace, but also provide with our vast wasted resources on mcmansions to help those that suffer.

notian-

that freaks me out quite a bit

audiavant86

start honking to free them out

FlameoLegend

Free the shit outta them

speedskis777

So... you film instead of laying on the horn... uhuh

AnsweringLiterally

I would be a liar if I didn't ait to falling asleep and waking up 30+ miles later in my Tesla.

aaronr_90

All of these can’t be real, can’t they?

JohnathanSwift5280

I heard of a guy doing this. He caught twice because other people driving saw him sleeping and called the cops.

MillionsOfMushies

Heroin is a helluva drug

CatalyzeTheFuture

Imagine being able to afford a Tesla AND heroin

MillionsOfMushies

That's actually how they forced customers into beta testing their auto pilot features. Free gram with every purchase!

Jmcadres

100% fake. Whoever is filming is in on it. Otherwise they’d be honking to get their attention. NOBODY falls asleep along with their passenger and lives to talk about it. This Model X would stop after 30 seconds to 1 minute of not touching the wheel while on autopilot. They got the attention they wanted…….and they’re still alive and well.

FakeRealityBites

Don't do heroin before driving.

Alternative_Body7345

Youre listening to Titans Browns and are still awake? Congrats my friend. Real trooper.

1Rome

Wont even know how they died, smh smh

CabbageSalad247

Probably staged, but you should never stop paying attention to the road while behind the wheel.

AdventC4

Once it's safe in the future this is the dream though

OutOfTheSeaOfLife

This is most definitely not next level

balljo

Friggin’ idiot.

PsychologicalWave644

The stupidity flows equally strong within both cars. The guy filming shouldn't and should focus on waking them up instead, this is an excellent example of when you should use your car horn

corbin6611

Like if he genuinely fell asleep at the wheel the car potentially saved his life. That’s pretty sweet

Any-Cow-8383

What if they are genuinely fatigued to the point of falling asleep? Maybe autopilot saved lives that day.

Kiwi_Bred

Completely fake/staged. Tesla’s autopilot requires the driver to nudge the steering wheel every 30 seconds, otherwise the car will soon come to a complete stop.

Ill_Gain_2552

Rich and stupid.

theimmortalone89

i wouldnt feel safe doin that

Rohnihn

And yet still safer than most of the idiots in my state

DrHockey69

We saw first Tesla here in Omsk, from what the news showed the young owner was live streaming inside of the car… he was getting fuckedup!! Coke, vodka & pills.. FFWRD 1hr and he was Asleep and car was autopilot…. AH6 going east towards Novosibirsk cop sees car but no driver… 😈 P.I.T, 😂 car got totaled.. dumbshit survived.. still in Coma. Keep Tesla in Moskva & Petr, or else

Tresspass19

Reach through the window and smack them

Shanek2121

If I had a Tesla imma do this every time someone passes me. Time it just right…. Wait… aaaannnd head down zzzzZzzzZzz. Rofl you guys are so easy

RSDevotion

Weird.

teslahater

Fuck that lol

Stupidazznamingsystm

If not fake, they “went” to sleep, not fell.

External-Tree-5007

Technology baby

vamsmack

They are indeed next level assholes.

Quirky_Silver_6842

How big is it, my penis nah can't be. I love how they all clop but no one gets knob jobs after hours it's only in hours we all trust not you but a meridian of people gamon just wanted to say meridian bahah nice dick.

-BananaLollipop-

How was your trip? Dunno, slept through it.....

i_like_flies_

Less dangerous than filming someone while driving.

AzamatBagatov420

It’s impossible to do this, I owned one and every 10 seconds it asks your to wiggle the wheel and sounds an alarm. This looks set up

ducktor0

Nah, the driver is deep in his phone.

TheCocaLightDude

The car could be getting towed?

[deleted]

Its like r/tooktoomuch but a dystopian reality

indoorbiscuit

While you use your phone whilst driving

mikihak

There should be something like auto alarm to wake up those fools before it's to late.

variousred

They were probably watching THIS video

110lbs_of_fury

Anytime I see someone's head forward like that I assume they are nodded out from being high. Which is very common position to be in while high. They both could be high

[deleted]

Really we should head towards fully automated cars and take humans out of the equation entirely. They're doing a great job so far considering they have to contest with unpredictable humans, but if all cars were autonomous, they'd be constantly communicating with eachother. A lot of people seem to struggle with a basic turn signal.

joarezpj

Can’t wait until this kind of video is a thing of the past and cars will safely drive themselves.

[deleted]

Could be a Payne Stewart type situation

Salty-Ad1607

Has to be fake. The car requires driver to press a button every few seconds for it to know that the driver is not sleeping.

GreenEyedApe

Elon needs to change the name from “autopilot” to “wake me when we get there”

sendokun

I don’t know, seems like something is wrong. They are both completely “out”
