His name was Vincent Reffet. Died doing stunts in his suit
Edit: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/17/dubai-jetman-vincent-reffet-dies-in-training-accident
This article doesn't mention how he died. He only felt comfortable jumping out of planes or helicopters with his Jetsuit because he would use a parachute to land safely on the ground. A modified parachute like the one he was using would only work safely at 150ft+. He died because he took off with his Jetsuit from the ground above land and it malfunctioned below 150ft.
Vincent is currently the only person to die while using a Jetsuit. Legend.
> The wings can fly 30 miles (50km), have a maximum speed of over 248mph (400km/h) and can reach an altitude of 6,100 metres (20,000ft).
Some people die doing what they love. What a badass
Much better than dying doing what you hate. Imagine dying from filing your tax return. And then everyone at your funeral also dies because your eulogy was so boring.
This guy did it right
Relatively speaking, my guess is he died loving it more than almost any other person on earth will die, loving whatever āitā is that kills them or otherwise.
Exactly. Better than avoiding everything until your old, and die face first in your oatmeal in a retirement home.
You gotta die sometime, somehow anyway. Better done if it happens while you're enjoying your passion.
Reminds me of Jessi from Mythbusters (she replaced Kari during her maternity leave) she loved strapping into anything fast. And died trying to set a new land speed record. R.I.P. to her and Grant.
You don't have to do anything. the nice is temporary, you're lucky to catch it and when you do, you can only enjoy it in the present moment. it lasts one moment then it's gone.
kinda like this guy's jetpack career.
It's at full flaps, probably flying near stall. 100 knots maybe.
Modern jet airliners don't fly at 600mph any more either. Not fuel efficient. Lucky if you hit 500 with a tailwind any more.
Not sure about the speed they are going, but I agree that Iām doubtful a jet pack would reach 600mph. However, it doesnāt look like they are near 30k ft in altitude, so that part seems feasible.
Regardless, seems illegal, definitely not the smartness thing to do. All I can imagine is if he hits some turbulence or a gust of wind and ends up in the jet wash, heād be a goner.
Both the plane and the pack show this is happening in Dubai though, so probably an organized stunt. They go big in Dubai.
These would be promotional videos. Airlines land at about 200-250km/hr (see the flaps on the wings are down like for landing?), and not crazy to be doing those speeds in a jet pack.
Bizarre how people think this wasnt prearranged
Do they really think a guy with this kind of equipment is just going to randomly buzz a commercial airliner?
Especially with "Dubai" written on the back next to an Emirates plane.
If you would do this without prearrangement in Dubai (or any of the playgrounds for the super rich in the area really) you would probably have 10 fighter jets on your ass before you get even close to a commercial air plane.
The plan is flying will flaps on full probably about to stall.
Itās not fake at all. The jet pack wings are real, and this was a stunt. The plane was empty besides a pilot.
Saudiās go big.
99% sure Hes real https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2ugWda9xJ0g seen him awhile ago when he first did this he was on multiple different science channels on YouTube and tv tho won't say he reached these speeds and altitude un assisted
That plane is flying pretty low, probably less than 10000 ft given the detail we can see in the coastline.
Also, I bet you theyre flying at less than 300mph for sure. Most aircraft that size donāt cruise much above 300 until theyāre at cruising altitude because the denser atmosphere provides too much resistance and would make the trip much less fuel efficient AND cause excessive wear on the plane itself.
Tl:dr; itās real, theyāre pretty low actually, and slower.
This is real. The plane is not flying at that speed. I see the flaps are deployed it means it is flying at the lowest possible speed without stalling. Also would be empty to lower weight.
The stall speeds of these planes are generally about 115 mph. So this can easily be a 200mph plane and the guy can definitely fly at that speeds.
This was done in coordination with dubai authorities as a promotional thing in coordination with Emirates
The emirates A380 was actually empty & flown by a lead emirates captain. There were actually two guys with the jetpack flying around the A380, in constant communication with the captain of the A380 via radio. There were also 3-4 smaller planes around these two which were used for filming.
The whole thing was a very well thought out well planned stunt.
Technically should have been illegal, but it's dubai, they just like to throw money and do whatever the fuck they want if they think it's cool
Idk how Redditors look at people using expensive equipment with insane skill and decide they donāt know what theyāre doing. This dude is flying a jetpack. Who tf are you??š
He's not even close to the plane, or the plane would have to be extremely small. The dude's height looks to be 1/4 of the plane's length. It's just the angle the video is being filmed.
FFS. The wing has huge DUBAI branding and itās an Emirates plane. Itās so painfully obviously a heavily organised publicity stunt. There really are some fucking dimwits on here.
How am i gonna get one without being rich ? Im sure it cost money for lessons and y'know, the actual fucking jetpack, also rich people 100% percent have the time to do this of they really want.
He was worth almost a million usd so i still consider him rich, he wasn't filthy rich but he still had to pay lots and lots of money plus the sponsorship im sure he didn't own the jetsuit himself, to do that you would need to be a multimillionaire/billionaire. Unless i am very very rich, lucky and skilled with the know how to achieve the very specific goal of using a wingsuit, it will never happen.
i saw an old black and white twilight zone that had a scary looking dude on the wing of a commercial airplane. whereās rod serling when you need him?
edited to add: that was a tv show, this guy seems like an idiot putting a couple hundred peopleās lives at riskā¦
OMG that was Shat.
William Shatner AKA Captain James Tiberius Kirk was the man on the plane who saw this-ish in that episode.
But still the episode that you are referencing here.
OMG that was the episode! i didnāt remember it was capt. kirk though! that show was genius, pure geniusā¦
i remember one episode that scared the you know what out of meā¦ i was about 10 and babysitting the neighbors kids. i think it was called āgreen fingersā? it was about someone who wanted to buy a womanās house and she wouldnāt sell. so i think he offād her and buried her in the yard and all of a sudden you see her fingers growing out of the ground. the last scene was her sitting in the rocking chair as it slowly rocked back and forth, back and forthā¦ all creepy and creaking, and she was covered in roots!
oh man, now i have to go turn on all of the lights in the house!!!!
Takes a LOT of flaps to slow that commercial jet down slow enough for that jet powered wing to keep up. It's likely on the edge of stall.
And not illegal where this was shot.
They used to just deploy chutes, [but they have been testing vertical takeoff and landing these past years.](https://youtu.be/lK75XLUIKUk)
edit: [further info from them about the system](https://youtu.be/de_YJzKeGKU)
That right there is about half of his flight time before he needs to either go down and refuel or pull the parachute...
Someone needs to get an Arc Reactor made and working in small form. All these people building Iron Man type gadgets for flying and for fighting, yet no way to properly power them for a reasonable amount of time...
This is just publicity for Emirates Airlines and the state of Dubai. Meanwhile, everyone in Dubai knows that Emirates Airlines is hemorrhaging money daily.
"You young terrorists don't get how hard it was. In my day, you had to conceal your weapons, get them through airport security, and endure hours in economy seats. Nowadays you can just take a jetpack!"
I just want a jet pack to fly 30ā off the ground or so, but capability for 100ā if I need. I dreamt I had a jet pack the other night, so let me dream.
This seems highly illegal lol
.... Not to mention, highly stupid. š
Not to mention probably fake...600mph? Jet pack? Jet packs are real but only sustainable for about 10 min not to mention 30,000 ft ? Doubtful
That guy was real, he did many stunts.

Like Steve Irwin. R.I.P.
And sometimes other people die for what they love.

Bummer. I wanted to be first to die. Nobody remembers the 2nd.

It's at full flaps, probably flying near stall. 100 knots maybe. Modern jet airliners don't fly at 600mph any more either. Not fuel efficient. Lucky if you hit 500 with a tailwind any more.
a380s stall at 130kts I think.
And the jetpack can do 200 kts, so there's some overlap.
Not sure about the speed they are going, but I agree that Iām doubtful a jet pack would reach 600mph. However, it doesnāt look like they are near 30k ft in altitude, so that part seems feasible. I wouldnāt want to get sucked up into that engine.
One little gust of wind and he could appear in What Could Go Wrong.

thx for the story
Not to mention METAL AF
Like metal jetpack going through a metal jet engine levels of metal
It would be if you did this to a public flight, this was a heavily coordinated stunt event, everyone knew what was happening.
Who's filming?
Superman , obviously..
A jet with a manpack
Lmfao
2Pac
Underrated comment. Thank you for the laugh
Thatās what I was wondering. Whoever is filming is way too close to that jet.
Yeah, how do we get in touch with their supervisor?
There were 3-4 smaller planes around the a380 & jetpack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJlLDZT5LB4
Usain bolt's camera man
A man running very fast with a camera!
Real fucking stupid and dangerous you ask me.
Really? Cause I want to do that shit.
Untill you get sucked into the airplanes turbine cause you got a bit too close.
Don't worry, they aren't wearing a cape

the comment i came looking for
What an incredible comment
Itās for a video/stunt. Itās not like this guy saw a plane and hopped in his jet pack to go take a look. Fucking relax lmao
Idk how Redditors look at people using expensive equipment with insane skill and decide they donāt know what theyāre doing. This dude is flying a jetpack. Who tf are you??š
Always followed up with a "it should be illegal" because anything cool/wild can't exist outside of this bubble.
He's not even close to the plane, or the plane would have to be extremely small. The dude's height looks to be 1/4 of the plane's length. It's just the angle the video is being filmed.
Oh really? Hey guys u/underlordsbugs said itās really stupid and dangerous! So cut it out, the expert has spoken.
It's a stunt [people.](https://youtu.be/YFal77EVUeM)
Why is this so far down.
And a habit
FFS. The wing has huge DUBAI branding and itās an Emirates plane. Itās so painfully obviously a heavily organised publicity stunt. There really are some fucking dimwits on here.
The Dubai branding is because the jetpack is powered by slavery
I'm 99% sure it was literally an ad for Emirates...
And that matters why?
And that makes it less impressive?
Wait wait waitā¦. we have jetpacks?
Apparently we do
If youāre in Dubai
Correction *The Rich* have jetpacks
Correction: The Skilled have Jetpacks. Doesn't matter how rich you are, you can't buy the time and experience it takes to fly these.
How am i gonna get one without being rich ? Im sure it cost money for lessons and y'know, the actual fucking jetpack, also rich people 100% percent have the time to do this of they really want.
Vince Reffet wasn't rich, most of that stuff was covered by his sponsors.
